Chapter 5: Forest of Death Part 1
Chapter Text
As I leave the testing center, I walk to find my teammates. Amara and Arumajiro seem excited to have gotten through the first part of the exam. I'm excited too, knowing that the real challenge lies ahead. We've all worked so hard to prepare for this moment, to face the unpredictable and daunting battles that await us.
Smiling, I stand together with them. "Remember, we've got this. Stick together, be prepared for anything, and most importantly, watch each other's backs," I inform them, emphasizing the importance of unity and vigilance as we face the trials ahead.
Amara replies eagerly, her determination shining through her words. "Absolutely, Miraju-kun. We've trained hard for this moment, and we'll face whatever comes our way together. Let's show everyone what we're made of!"
Arumajiro nods, maintaining his serious demeanor as we stand at the gate. Other teams are gathered around, discussing their plans and waiting for the hour to pass. Arumajiro takes out two large pieces of Onigiri from his bag and hands one to me and one to Amara. "Here, it's best to eat before the action starts. We might be too nervous then," he reasons.
I take one of the Onigiri, nodding in agreement, as does Amara. "Thanks, good thinking," I comment as I quickly eat mine.
"Guys, I'll be back in a bit. I'm going to check on other teams, listen in on what they're saying, and do a bit of scouting, okay?" Amara says, leaving before anyone could ask where or what she was going to scout for.
I shake my head, as I have a feeling I know what that means, but I let her go, talk to others, Amara is the social butterfly of the team, and that isn't a bad thing. I figure myself pretty average in those areas, and Arumajiro mostly keeps to himself from what I see and is rather quiet.
"Hey, Miraju-kun," I hear from an unexpected source. My head turns quickly toward the sound. "I would avoid the central path, and stay away from my team. It won't end well for you."
I notice it is oddly Kin Tsuchi, who is saying this. I nod, understanding the implication behind Kin's warning. "Thanks for the heads up, Kin-san. I'll keep that in mind," I reply, grateful for her candid advice.
"However, if there is ever a point you need my support, just tell me, and I will do my best to help," I reply with a smile on my lips as I look at the black haired kunoichi. "Though, as I said, I am sure you don't need my help."
Kin nods, her expression softening slightly. "I appreciate that, Miraju-kun. And likewise, if you ever find yourself in a bind, don't hesitate to reach out," she responds, a hint of sincerity in her tone. "Let's both do our best in this exam."
"Of course, I hope to see you after this exam too," I repeat back with a thumbs up, "I promise I will find a way to advance and move on," I declare firmly, my resolve, and determination showing. Is this determination from my past life or the sheer determination of the life of the body I control now, no clue. It could be due to other factors at that moment too, but I feel it, the will to advance and to help this girl.
Kin offers a small smile in response. "I'll be looking forward to it. Let's both make it through this exam and meet again on the other side," she says, her voice filled with determination matching yours. With a nod, she turns to head back to her team, leaving you to contemplate the challenges that lie ahead.
"I see, so it seems both of my teammates have found a crush at the exam," Arumajiro muses out loud as he looks at me with a mischievous look on his face. "I wonder if I should tell Amara, she is going to love hearing about this."
I shake my head, and let out a chuckle, "Perhaps I have found a bit of one," I say realizing then, my face is a bit red. "I don't need to hear the jokes from Amara or the endless questions about the girl or her spreading this out to all the Suna ninja in her gossip talks, lets just keep this to ourselves for now, maybe see if it is a mirage or not first."
Arumajiro chuckles at your response. "Fair enough, Miraju-san. Your secret is safe with me," he says, offering a reassuring nod. "But you know Amara, she has a knack for uncovering secrets," he adds with a smirk. "Just be prepared for her interrogation when she returns."
Amara returns about five minutes before, she looks really happy, and she seems focused too, "Okay, it seems as though, that I was able to make friends with a few ninja from other villages, I think I talked many into at least some type of truces. "So did you run into anyone while I was away."
I exchange glances with Arumajiro before responding. "Nothing out of the ordinary, just some friendly conversations," I reply casually, hoping to deflect any suspicion about my earlier encounter with Kin. "How about you, Amara-chan? Sounds like you had quite an eventful time out there."
Amara's eyes light up with excitement as she nods. "Oh, it was amazing! I met some really interesting people and managed to establish a few truces," she says, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. "I have a feeling it's going to make a difference in how we navigate through this phase of the exam."
I smile at her determination, feeling a sense of pride in her ability to forge alliances even in such a competitive environment. "That's great, Amara-chan. Your social skills might just be our secret weapon," I remark, offering her a supportive nod.
"Miraju-san also seems to have made a friend while you were away," Arumajiro said without giving anything else away.
I feel a slight heat rising to my cheeks as Arumajiro's words catch me off guard. "Uh, yeah, just some friendly conversation," I reply, trying to downplay it. "Nothing too serious."
Amara shoots me a curious look, her eyebrows raised inquisitively. "Oh, really? Who did you meet?" she asks, her curiosity piqued.
"One of the Otogakure ninja, um Kunoichi, said I would help out if they needed my help and they said the same," I say downplayed again my small crush upon said kunoichi as much as possible.
Amara's eyes widen in surprise. "That's great! Building alliances could be really helpful during the exam," she remarks, nodding in approval. "Let's hope it works out for all of us."
I nod in agreement, relieved that Amara didn't press further about the specifics of my conversation with Kin. "Yeah, definitely," I reply, flashing a smile to both of my teammates.
At that moment, Anko appeared, her presence commanding attention as she began to give out instructions for the forest of death part of the exam. Her voice was sharp and authoritative as she outlined the rules and details of the upcoming challenge.
"We'll be entering the Forest of Death in pairs," Anko explained, her tone leaving no room for misunderstanding. "Stay vigilant, and watch out for traps and other teams. The objective is to retrieve two scrolls: one heaven, one earth. You must obtain the missing scroll and make it to the tower in the center of the forest within the time limit to pass this phase of the exam."
As she spoke, the seriousness of the task ahead became apparent. The Forest of Death was known for its dangers, and the stakes were high for all participants. I exchanged determined glances with my teammates, silently reaffirming our commitment to success in this daunting challenge.
With my teammates by my side, I listened intently to the details of the challenge. As Anko outlined the rules and objectives, a sense of determination settled over us. It was our time to shine, to work together and overcome the obstacles that lay ahead in the Forest of Death.
As I surveyed the dense forest before us, I couldn't help but feel a sense of apprehension. The towering trees and thick undergrowth seemed to conceal countless dangers, from traps to potential ambushes. Remembering Kin's warning, I knew that we needed to proceed with caution and remain vigilant at all times.
My mind raced with plans and strategies, searching for any possible advantage we could leverage in this perilous environment. With a serious and focused expression, I turned to my teammates, ready to face whatever challenges awaited us in the forest.
Soon, we find ourselves entering the forest, carefully choosing our path to avoid the central route. I recall Kin's words, trusting that her warning was not without reason. Leading the way, I guide us through the dense foliage, with Amara following closely behind and Arumajiro bringing up the rear to watch for any potential ambushes.
We communicate silently through hand signs, avoiding unnecessary talking that could give away our position. Using the signals we've practiced under Sensei's guidance, I direct our movements through the thick undergrowth, our speed and coordination a testament to our rigorous training.
"Three ninja ahead, setting up a trap," Amara's keen chakra-sensing abilities alert us to the presence of our adversaries. Knowing that we'll soon engage in battle, she speaks quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. The group ahead happens to be from Takigakure, also participating in their first exam.
"Amara, Arumjario," I say for the moment dropping formalities because there is no time, I have to put out my command quickly, "Take on the ninja on the left, I will engage the other two, and keep them busy, overwhelm the one two on one and then we turn the tide on the group and win."
Amara nods in understanding, her eyes narrowing as she focuses on the three ninja from Takigakure. She motions for Arumajiro to follow her, and they both vanish into the shadows, closing in on their targets silently. Meanwhile, I move towards the other two, taking out my sword and kunai. I throw the kunai as hard as I can at the enemy, grabbing the attention of two Takigakure ninja: a tall, slender male, and a short, stout guy.
The distraction works as planned, and the two ninja turn their attention towards me. They spring into action, with the tall male rushing forward with swift kicks and the short male charging with his arms extended, ready to tackle me to the ground. "Lightning release, lightning field!" I call out as I create a small area lightning attack, zapping the whole area around me as the two enemy ninja get close to me.
The lightning field envelops us, sparking violently as it repels the attacks of the two ninja. Though they manage to avoid being harmed, they are momentarily stunned by the powerful defense. This gives me the opportunity to launch a counterattack, and I take full advantage of it.
Dodging the tall male's kick easily, I quickly launch a thrusting attack with my sword towards his chest. As he attempts to block with his forearm, I spin around him, delivering a swift kick to his back before he can recover. The tall male stumbles forward, his eyes widening in surprise as I kick him. He tries to regain his footing, but I'm too quick for him. I land another kick, this time to his side, sending him sprawling to the ground.
The short male ninja, seeing his teammate fall, tries to attack me from behind, but Amara and Arumajiro appear out of nowhere, blocking his path. "Gotcha!" Amara says with a grin as she pins the short male down with a sharp chakra-enhanced kick.
The battle is soon over, and I notice that both Amara and Arumajiro had defeated their enemies before my own battle concluded. They were much stronger than I had anticipated. We ended up with another scroll for the victory, adding to our success. I look over at them with a smile. "Good work, team. Let's keep moving."
Things started off great for us, even amazing, as we traveled. We felt confident and perhaps a bit too overconfident in our abilities.
Soon, however, we were caught off guard by a genjutsu that we weren't prepared for. This caused us to split up unintentionally. Amara ended up heading towards the center area, while I proceeded forward and Arumajiro veered off to the left, leaving us far more vulnerable than we realized. I only became aware of this when I found myself traveling alone, carrying the two scrolls.
I advanced quietly, moving as best as I could, taking things extra carefully when I knew I was alone. I knew if I turned back I would only run into more trouble, and I had to trust in my teammates to find me before I got to the tower at the end. A took out a stamina pill and had one, I was going to need the stamina boost this day.
As we walk, the sound of footsteps from behind us makes us both turn around. This time, however, it's not a friendly face. A group of enemy ninjas steps out from the shadows, blocking our path. We draw our weapons and prepare for battle.
"Arumajiro, you're the shield, and I am the sword. Let's whittle them down slowly and come out victorious again," I declare as I see him use his earth armor to give himself an impressive strong defense. We stand back-to-back, forming a tight circle as the enemy ninjas close in around us. I can feel the tension in the air as we both prepare for the upcoming battle.
"Just like we've practiced," I say, exchanging a glance with Arumajiro. A silent understanding passes between us. We both know what to do. As the enemy ninjas charge towards us, I leap into the air, spinning and slashing my weapon in a wide arc. Two of the ninjas fall, taken down by my initial attack. Arumajiro follows suit, using his earth-style jutsu to create a wall of earth that blocks the enemy's advance. We both take a moment to catch our breath, scanning the area for any remaining threats. Only one ninja remains, and they look ready to strike at any moment. Arumajiro and I exchange a look, knowing that we need to take down the last remaining enemy ninja quickly. We charge towards the ninja, our weapons ready. Arumajiro follows closely behind, using his earth-style jutsu to create spikes on the ground to trip up the enemy.
As we close in on the last remaining enemy ninja, they nimbly leap over the spikes that Arumajiro created and land gracefully on the other side. They brandish their weapon, a long, curved sword, and charge towards us with a fierce battle cry. We brace ourselves for the impact, raising our weapons to block the incoming attack. The clash of steel-on-steel rings out through the forest as we both struggle to gain the upper hand. Arumajiro takes this opportunity to strike at the enemy's legs, trying to trip them up with his earth-style jutsu. The enemy ninja jumps over Arumajiro's attack, their eyes never leaving mine. I can feel the intensity of their gaze, and I know that we need to end this battle quickly. With a surge of adrenaline, I push forward, driving the enemy ninja back. They stumble, but quickly regain their footing.
I see an opening and take the chance, thrusting my weapon towards the enemy ninja's chest. But they are quick, and they parry my blow with ease. However, this distraction allows Arumajiro to get the upper hand. He knocks the last ninja out with a powerful punch, his earth-style jutsu enhancing his strength. The enemy ninja falls to the ground, unconscious.
Arumajiro and I share a look of relief and exhaustion. The battle is over, and we both have come out victorious. We take a moment to catch our breath and assess the damage.
As I swallow the stamina pill, I feel a surge of energy coursing through my veins. Cautiously, I make my way forward, my senses on high alert for any signs of danger. The path ahead is narrow and winding, and I can't help but feel a sense of unease as I move deeper into the unknown. Suddenly, I hear the sound of footsteps approaching from behind. I spin around, ready to defend myself, but I see no one. I strain my ears, trying to locate the source of the noise, when I hear it again – this time, closer.
Drawing my weapon, my heart pounding in my chest, I see a figure emerging from the shadows. As it steps into the light, I realize that it's Arumajiro. He looks relieved to see me and gives a small nod of acknowledgment. I sheathe my weapon and let out a sigh of relief, glad that it's one of my teammates and not an enemy.
"Let's not lose hope," I reply, trying to stay positive despite the situation. "We need to keep moving forward and trust that she's capable of taking care of herself. We'll find her soon enough." With a determined nod, I gesture for Arumajiro to continue on with me as we press forward through the forest.
I pick up the other scroll, "Lets keep moving and hope we find Amara in this mess of a first," I comment as I look over at Arumajiro.
"I agree," Arumajiro nods, his expression determined. "We need to find her as soon as possible."
We continue through the forest, keeping a vigilant eye out for any signs of Amara or potential threats. The tension in the air is palpable as we navigate the dense foliage, knowing that danger could lurk around any corner. Despite the uncertainty, we press on, driven by the need to reunite with our teammate and complete the exam.
