Here's the next chapter of Mysterious Magic which focuses primarily on Luz's second day on the Boiling Isles, while at the same time having a bit of support as well including a better understanding of the very world she is in.
Chapter 2
Most Wizards Are Jerks
Right about now inside the Owl House, Luz was stirring in her sleep. In her state of dreaming, she was reliving the events that transpired yesterday. From when she went through the interdimensional door, arriving at the Owl House for the first time, riding on Eda's staff and flying through the skies of the Boiling Isles. Gasping awake she shot up and looked around her surroundings. She was still in the same room, and there was King sleeping on the end of her sleeping bag snoring.
" It wasn't a dream! " The fantasy lover cried out happily and got up to open the window. " Good morning terrifying fantasy world! "
" Good morning. " There was a random giant octopus monster in the distance that greeted her sinking into the water.
" Ugh... " She flinched slightly upon seeing that. But the sound of King's snoring got her attention. She lifted him up, waking the demon at the same time. " Good-morning you little cutie-pie. " Luz began to kiss him rapidly like a little house pet.
" I am not your cutie-pie! " King retorted back trying to turn his face away from the affection he was getting.
" Yes you are... " Luz said hugging him and laid him back down to where he was sleeping. He sighed slumping down onto his stomach.
" I know... " The little canine admitted closing his eyes.
By now Luz was already dressed and just like everyone, natured called. She also got a little surprise seeing that a few owls came flying out of the door to the bathroom. Once inside she got another surprise.
" Hi Luz. " Hooty greeted scaring the girl who karate chopped him making him retract back out the window. " I'm just wishing you a good morning. " The guardian said before completely retracting himself back to the door. " Jeez! Hoot! Ow! "
" Sorry Hooty! " Luz apologized and noticed her Azura book was on the sink counter. Opening it up, she looked herself in the mirror to give herself a pep talk. " This is it, old girl." She put the book in her face. " Your first day on the Boiling Isles as a Witches Apprentice! " She exclaimed excitedly.
Not to long after she was on the hunt to suit up and start her apprenticeship. Only problem was, she didn't know her way around in the Owl House yet. So it took a long while to find some. Right now, she was seen wearing a a black witch's robe, and a ha. There was was also a small sticker name tag reading Hello My Name is: Witch Apprentice Luz. Eagerly she was staring up at the stairs, most likely for her new teacher.
While doing this Evan walked right by her giving off a yawn. " Morning Luz... " He greeted walking past her and then paused his pace. He then reversed walked backing up to where Luz was. " What are you doing? " He asked with raised eyebrow and noticed her outfit. " And what're you wearing? "
" Witch clothing. " She answered still keeping her attention focused up the stairs.
" Oookay. But that still doesn't answer my first question. "
" I'm just waiting for Eda. " She answered again not diverting her gaze.
" Heheheheh... " Evan chuckled lightly. " Just a little heads up, mom ain't a morning person like me. So, don't freak about what she says alright? " He said patting her on the shoulder much to Luz's confusion as he walks away. Her attention was then brought back up the stairs hearing a toilet flush, and silently squealed all excitedly.
Eda soon came into view in her nightwear consisting of a plum sweater with amber cuffs, a stained, long, violet nightgown, and light yellow bunny slippers. With a yawn she notices Luz down the stairs. " Hmm? "
" Good morning Eda, The Owl Lady. " Luz greeted. " I am ready for my first day of Witch Apprenticeship. "
" Ugh! " Eda shook out her hair causing some spiders to spill out. " Who are you again? " She asked pulling out a spider from her ear and flicked it away.
" Huh? " Hearing this surprised Luz as her sticker fell off.
" Remember me, Luz? " The said teen girl was following Eda into the kitchen where Evan and King were having breakfast. Evan was cooking up pancakes, while King was sitting in a high chair eating his own, that looked like a blob of some sort with multiple eyes. She then got hit in the back of the head by a coffee mug. She continued trailing her new 'teacher'. " We freed the oppressed and defeated the evil warden together? Yesterday? "
Eda ignored her and looked into the fridge turning around. " Kid, lay off the details, I haven't had my cup of Apple Blood yet. " She said holding her mug filled with the said drink.
" You mean, Apple Juice? " Luz asked confused figuring it was just a brand name.
" No. " Eda answered confirming it was actual blood and sat down against the table drinking away.
" Teach me some spells. When do I get my magic staff? " Luz was marauding Eda with all sorts of questions. " Was I supposed to bring my own runes? " She was asking a barrage of questions and gasps in excitement. " Do you have a dangerous magical quest for me!? "
" Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down, kid. " Eda told Luz backing her up a bit as she was already in her space. " Being a witch doesn't happen overnight. " She said and then gained an amused smirk. " Also, you're wrapped in a bathrobe and wearing the dirtiest traffic cone I've ever seen. " Luz took of her hat and blew it off. Instantly large amounts of dust came off to reveal it was an actual traffic cone.
Evan laughed a bit along with King who was now fighting his food. " But a magic staff, huh? " Eda asked after sipping some of her drink. " You really want one? "
" More than anything. " Luz answered honestly.
Wiping off her lip Eda called out to hers. " Magic Staff, come to me! " Holding out her hand they waited for her said possession to appear. But then they heard, clattering, crashing the sound of different stuff breaking.
" No...Oh come on! " Evan groaned in annoyance upon hearing the sounds. " I just finished cleaning up the last mess! " As he said that his mothers staff flew in and instead of being caught it wacked her in the head falling onto the floor. " But on the other hand, seeing that is sort of worth it. "
" Smart ass.. " Eda retorted to her son picking it up and twirled it around a bit planted the end to the floor. " It's early... " The owl lady briefly explained why it happened and moved onto the important stuff. " Now, Witches and Wizards or Warlocks, are awarded their staffs from school. " She said motioning to her own. " With me as your teacher you'll be taking a different approach just like Evan. " Using her magic, Eda made a large bag filled with glass potion bottles land on the floor. " You'll have to work for it. "
" Hey, hey, hold on a second. " Evan called out getting their attention jabbing his thumb over to many large tall stacks of pancakes with drool leaking out of the corner of his mouth. " Can we at least eat something before we get down to business? I'm hungry... " He got multiple replies back and they sat down to eat. And Luz watched with a bit of an impressed and surprised look because Evan was mowing through the pancakes, considering he had more then they all did together.
" You might want to eat yours before he snatches it... " Eda whispered to her new student/employee as she ate. " This is pretty much normal for him. This ain't nothing...compared to him being in competitions. "
Once that large breakfast was done and Evan was dressed patting his now full stomach, Eda began to explain Luz the details of her line of work with the two following her.
" I run a few businesses. On weekends, I offer rare human treasures that Owlbert and Evan drags over from your realm. " She said tapping the owl on her staff including her son and picked up toy sword pressing a button.
" I shall smite my enemies! Ages six to eleven. " The sword said as Eda threw it aside
" But most days I sell only the finest homemade elixirs and potions. " Luz reaches into the bag and brings out a bottle.
" 'Snake Oil.' " She reads the label outloud.
" No one wants an unoiled snake. Follow me. "
They were now seen outside on a stone balcony right near the tower. " Today you'll be delivering packages to that town over there. " Eda pointed to the same place where Luz entered their world. " Bones Burrow. You'll have to be careful, I have rivals everywhere. Who'd love to take my business down and you along with it. " She said in a serious tone and stood tall. " You wanted a dangerous magical quest? Sister you got one. "
" I won't let you down Miss Eda. " Luz saluted unaware that the end of the bag slipped out of her grip. Just in the nick of time, Evan was quick enough to catch it making Luz smile nervously.
" I'm sure. " Eda said flatly as she went back down.
" And your welcome. " Evan smiled joining with them.
Back in the living room Eda was pushing Luz across the floor to the open door. " Remember, don't trust a man in sandals and always measure twice, cut once. "
" Uh... " Luz didn't understand nor have any time to speak as the door was closed.
" Good luck! " Eda made the door close slamming it in her face.
" Mom no offense, but are you really dead set on teaching her magic or you just going to use her? " Evan questioned with a raised eyebrow grabbing her attention.
" I'm keeping to my word Evan, I am. " The witch anwsered firmly. " Also you and King are gonna have to go with her. "
" Alright, I don't mind. " Evan replied.
" What!? But I just found the perfect spot. " King objected pointing down on a treasure chest he was supposedly napping on. " Why do I have to go too? Ain't Evan enough?
" We all know she's going to get lost or eaten, probably both. " Eda said as the said girl planted her face against the window freaking them out.
" No I won't! " She said.
Eda twirled her finger making the curtain go down covering the window. " It's also for extra precautions and because you work for me, too, unless you want to start paying rent. " She said bluntly making King throw a quick angry tantrum stomping his feet before they exited out of the house. " Be back by nightfall or risk moral peril. " Eda said rather cheerfully and closed the door only for it to quickly reopen. " Also love you Evan. " The door closed again.
" Have a nice trip. " Hooty said.
With a sigh of annoyance King spoke up. " Huh! Let's get this over with. " He said.
After a decent amount of walking through the forest, the trio had finally arrived to their destination. " Alright, looks like we only got about a decent amount of clients to visit. So today won't take to long. " Evan said looking over a list of addresses his mother had given them.
" So do you usually do this on your own? "
" Sometimes, and King comes along. "
" That's because you force me to... "
" Oh really? So you weren't actually bored? " Evan retorted with a raised eyebrow as they came to an entry way that lead them to the streets. He then looked over to Luz who was in awe of what she was seeing. " Well, Luz, welcome to Bones Burrow. " He motioned outwards.
" Wow... " Compared to yesterday, Luz got a clear view of the many different residents of the town itself. She also saw some of the same creatures from yesterday and some different ones to. Walking there way through she glanced around and then some sort of butterfly creature flew past her with a some sort of growth on it's side.
" Hey, it's rude to stare. " King said.
" Yeah, you'd better used to the surroundings. " Evan advised. " Everything here is weird. But stare at the wrong 'thing', then your history. "
" I've only seen places like this in my dreams. It's incredible. And I'm the only human here? "
" We haven't seen any others. " Evan said. " Have we King? "
" Nope. Not one. " The canine replied back shrugging his shoulders and it was true, while there were demons and all sorts of different monsters in the Boiling Isles, there were no other humans around. There probably were some at one point, but then again, they never really questioned on why there weren't any at all.
" Wow...There must be a reason for that, right? Why am I here? " Luz set the bag down. " What if I, Luz Noceda, average teen, actually had..." She gasped in excitment continuing her rambling. " A predetermined path of greatness? Just. Like. Azura. "
" Yeah. Did Azura's path of greatness involve her delivering boil cream? " King asked not impressed holding out a bottle of the said content.
" Today, I'm delivering packages, but tomorrow I'll be earning respect of on the Boiling Isles with my magical prowess. " She said in a veryenthusiastic positive tone twirling around.
" Ha! Good luck. " King said. " The Boiling Isles is nothing but a cesspool of despair! "
" More like a cespool of delight. " Luz heaved the bag of bottles over her shoulder and scouted out the area. She found a possible candiate and ran over to a centaur.
" Well, you give her a round of applause for looking on the bright side of things.. " Evan said as they watched her try to make a sale. " There's not to many like that around here. "
" I know, and that's what makes it so annoying. " King commented as they watched her flinch upon seeing the centaurs face was on it's chest.
After about a couple of hours going around the town, selling potions and Evan getting Luz out of some 'situations' they were taking a break. Sitting on the curb of a sidewalk, Evan was eating a large sandwich wrapped up in tinfoil while King was chowing down on a few Not Dogs which was basically a hot dog without the weenie.
" Mmmm..." The young warlock was enjoying his lunch. " So good...To bad all good things are gone afterwards. "
The canine gobbled up his dog. " Yeah, I don't know about you, but I know I've had enough delight for one day. " At the same time Evan finished eating and sighed in content. He then looked over to see Luz was a bit annoyed.
" Why the long face? " Evan asked.
" I thought being the only human in a magical world would make me special... " Luz reached into the bag pulling out her Azura book. " But apparently, it just makes everyone want to scream at me or..." She lifts up her elbow showing the same butterfly creature from earlier was knawing on her. " Eat me. "
Evan made a small circle of energy zapping the bug off of her. She continued on. " At this point, Azura had already been sent on an enchanted quest. " She opened up the book showing the character kneeling before a wizard. " Where's my quest-granting wizard? "
" Sorry to break it to you Luz, but no one here is that well-dressed. " King said.
" Yeah, he ain't wrong about. " Evan said and then put a hand on her shoulder. " Luz, it's only been your second day on the Boiling Isles. Don't compare yourself with Azura, your story is much different then hers. The way I how I see it, you'll have your own tale to tell. But for right now, it's only beginning. " Luz defiantly listened to his words, and felt a bit better after hearing them.
Heaving the bag over his shoulder Evan helped Luz up. " C'mon, we got just one more package then were out of here. " They then proceeded down an alleyway.
" So is Devil Eye like your outlaw name or something? " Luz questioned out of curiosity remembering a few including Warden Wrath called him that.
" Oh yeah-yeah. That's just a name the locals gave me. " Evan answered with a hint of annoyance. " But to be quite frank, it's so stupid. "
" Then why do they call you that? "
" Cause of the patch... " Evan replied bitterly gesturing to his eyewear. They stopped for a moment.
" So is it just for decoration or-? " He turned to her and lifted it up allowing her to see that his right eye was completely dull gray. " You were born blind in one eye? "
" Hmm-mm. " Evan hummed putting it back on and they continued. " It's always been that way. I can't see nothing out of it. " Eventually they stopped in front of a tarp. The young warlock raised an eyebrow in confusion.
" Is this even the right address? " Evan asked as Luz looked at the list.
" Yeah, it says so right here... "
" Alright, I swear this better not be a- " Luz suddenly gasped in surprise because lying before them was a very large elegant looking castle. " Prank... "
" Pretty! " Luz said under her breath. The trio made their way up to the castle and got in front of two large doors.
" I never knew this place was here before...Did you? " Evan looked over to King who shrugged his shoulders making the 'I don't know' noise. Luz meanwhile rang the doorbell making the doors open.
" Big houses always belong to big wackjobs. Let's kick the package inside and get outta here. " King said.
" Sounds good to me. " Evan agreed.
" Hello? " Luz didn't seem to pay attention and walked inside.
" Hey, wait! " King and Evan tried to stop her but as they got in the doors slammed behind them making them flinch. The entire place was completely dark. They were trying to navigate, through.
" Um...W-Were delivering a package from Miss Eda, the Owl Lady. " Luz said trying to see when all the sudden the room started getting some light. Afterwards, more lights started flashing on, going up different levels revealing rows and rows of different books. They then stopped right on the level that had a painting of some old wizard putting his hands together. For some reason, right on que, the very same wizard in the painting emerged doing the same pose. He then looked down at the trio.
Luz gasped in excitement. " Today just got gooood~Magical wizard! "
" Wierd old man in jim-jams... " King wasn't impressed while Evan stood silent readying himself in case the so called 'wizard' tried anything.
" I was in my oscillarium, reading the stars. " The wizard said going down the steps. " And who might you be, with eyes full of curiosity? "
" Um I-I'm- " The wizard didn't let her finish and rushed over to them.
" Young lady, dareth I say, I sense something, unique about you. " Hearing his words made Luz blush and then he turned over to Evan. " Hmm, there's also something about you as well young man. " Stepping backwards a bit he twirled his finger around making a chair and a couch appear with a small table in the middle that had a few deserts. " Please, won't you join me for some tea? "
" That's a nice offer sir. " Evan replied. " But, were fine. " He quickly turned around to whisper to Luz. " Come on let's just get out of here. "
" Yeah, let's scram! " King whispered to Luz jumping up behind her. " Wizards are just old people with glitter in their pockets. " They watched the old man sprinkle some of the said material out. " I don't trust him."
" But the stars on his robe are sparkling. And look, there's a baby fox in his beard. " It was true there was one who giggled upon being noticed. " Plus, I see scones on the table. "
" Where!? " King instantly changed his mind and ran over to the table on all fours. Meanwhile Evan sighed.
" Fine, but were not gonna stay for long. " The young warlock reluctantly said as they sat down on the couch.
" We'd love to join you for tea. " Luz said as she took a cup while Evan quickly swipped a scone away from King. She turned over to see a small cart covered in potions. " Do you sell potions, Sir Wizard? "
" Please, call me Adegast. " The wizard insisted. " Ma'am yes, I run a small business. "
" You should run a small business of running more scones into my mouth! Haha! Yes! " King said triumphantly.
" I'm surprised to see you here. " Adegast said. " It was my understanding, that Eda deliverd the packages herself. " He looks over to Evan who had a hand underneath his chin. " And you are her child. Are you not? "
" What of it? " Evan questioned having an uneasy feeling for some reason.
" Nothing, just curious. " Adegast waved a hand out in defense.
" Well... " Luz spoke up. " I'm kinda, sorta her apprentice. "
" Oh! And how are you finding the experience so far? " Adegast questioned making Luz sigh.
" Can I be honest for a minute Mr Adegast? When I decided to stay in this magical world, I thought I was meant for something special. But Eda thinks I'm meant for chores and I'm afraid I came to the wrong place. "
" Okay, Luz, I'm gonna have to stop you right there. " Evan spoke up in a serious tone. " Mom, might be a lot of things. But she keeps her word. There's more to being just a witch then in your books and movies, a lot more then you think. "
" Your friend is very right young lady " Adegast said standing up from his chair. " I have a quest- "
" A quest!? " Luz shot out of her spot dropping the tea cup breaking it. Adegast was a bit amused with her personality.
" You didn't let me finish. I have a question. "
" Oh... "
" Would you like to go on a quest?"
" Yes! " She eagerly anwsered while Evan sat up in curiosity while the wizard pulled out a rolled up piece of paper out of his beard.
" I might have just the thing. " Taking off a seal he letted it unfold showing some sort of small map. " The prophecy speaks of a young human girl who will claim the celestial staff and free this world from an ancient evil. Perhaps thou hath cometh here for a reason. "
" I believe I have. " Luz said as if she was in a trance taking the map.
" Should you believe yourself worthy to attempt this quest... "
" So worthy... " Luz was now following him eyeing the piece of paper.
" You need to know the road is dark and perilous. "
" Love peril. Big fan of peril. " She said.
" And only the Chosen One can pull the staff from it's post. "
" Chosen one. " Luz repeated the two words she listened to most.
" Neat story, awesome. " King said sarcastically dragging the bag. " Anyway, the food is gone and we are too. "
" Yes, we have to go. And pack for this enchanted quest! I'm in. " Luz said much to her friends surprise.
" Wonderful. " Adegast said while Evan facepalmed himself
After arriving back to the Owl House Luz was immediately packing up supplies she might need for her quest. Also for some reason she was using the toy sword from earlier as a weapon.
" So guys? What kind of chosen one should I be? " Luz questioned Evan was sitting up against the window while King was taking a new napping position on Luz's rolled up sleeping bag.
The canine yawned. " Huh? What? "
Luz held up her book. " Should I be, full of optimism and goodness, like the Good Witch Azura? Or should I be like a bad girl Chosen One with black nail polish and a mysteriously withdrawn attitude? " She asked waving the book in front of her and made it look like it was talking. " I act like I don't care, but I secretly do. "
" Oh, you guys talking about bad girls? " Eda asked poking her head inside holding an arm by the bone for some reason. " Wait, what's going on? " She got curious and walked inside.
" Eda, tell Luz, how dumb wizards are. " King said from his spot.
" Ugh! Wizards are the worst. " She swung her arm out making King duck down. " Never trust a man in casual drapery. "
" Yeah, what she said. I ain't got nothing against them, but half the time there mostly a bunch of jerks. " Evan commented.
" Why are talking about Wizards? " Eda questioned.
" Your wizard client told Luz..." King was holding back his laughter. " Told Luz... " He was losing control. " She was a- " He was laughing. " Was a Chosen One! "
" Wait, wait, Luz? " Before long she fell back on her back joining in on the laughter.
" He even gave her a map! " King said as they continued their laughing embarrassing the poor girl hiding her face behind her book.
" Hey! Come on! Lay off! " Evan said sticking up for his friend. " Also, mom could you check out the map? "
" Sure...Let me... " Eda replied getting back on her feet and reluctantly Luz gave it to her teacher. She quickly inspected it. " You didn't think this was real did you? "
" What? " Luz was confused.
" This map is bunk. " Eda said slapping the back end of her hand on the paper. " There's no lake with a Celestial Staff on the Boiling Isles. I would've stolen it ages ago. " She noticed Luz looked really bummed out. " Ah, don't worry. Couple more months here and you won't look like such a mark. " Eda said lightly patting Luz's head with the girl lightly pushing it away.
" Uh...mom? Can we talk alone for a few? " Evan requested. " That includes you too King. " Eda shrugged her shoulders while King hoped off the sleeping bag leaving the room closing the door behind them.
" Are you gonna tell me I told you so? " Luz asked sounding a bit depressed gazing at the map.
" No... "
" Then what? "
" Luz, why were so keen on trying to look for this thing? " Evan asked in curiosity sitting down next to her. " Is it just because you could learn magic faster or something? That you'll gain instant power? "
" Well...yeah...I do... " Luz said honestly.
" Well your wrong. " Evan said. " I'm not trying to be mean, but, it's the truth. Look, there's more to magic then you think. Take me for example, I've studied under both of my parents most of my life. By the standards of others, I could've already have a magic staff of my own. "
" Really? Then why don't you? "
" Because I want to earn it. " Evan answered with a smile. " You don't need that staff to become a witch. Plus, haven't you considered you might have more then one teacher? "
" Really? "
" Yeah, why not? We could always learn something new, right? "
" Yeah...But I'm still bummed out about this map... "
" Mom, knows a lot more then you think, Luz. And there's a lot you don't know about the Boiling Isles, it can be dangerous. "
She sighed in defeat. " Maybe your both right...Huh? " She noticed something on the map. It had a glowing word, slowly she raised it into the air and gasped in shock. " Evan! Look at this! There's writing on here! "
" What? " Evan instantly shoot up and much to his surprise, she was right. There was writing on the map that read: The Chosen One. The path will only appear to the worthy. "
Luz read. " That's why, Eda couldn't see it...But, Am I really worthy? " For some reason the window swung open and the map flew out of her hands. It landed right next to her book flipping a few pages until it showed Azura holding up her staff.
Evan noticed the look of determination of his friends face. " Luz, you cannot be serious. " Evan said. " You heard what mom said, this just sounds way to good to be true. "
" I know, I know...But Evan, I won't know unless I try... "
Reluctantly Evan knew she made a point. Even though something like this wasn't normal. He sighed in defeat. " Alright, I'm with you Luz. We'll see it done. " He said patting her on the shoulder earning a smile.
Downstairs King was sitting up against a pillow fluffing it up.
" Finally! All that mean spirited-laughter made me sleepy. " The canine said closing his eyes to get comfortable. However, fate had other plans cause Eda walked up to him.
" Crony wake up! " The witch said making him open one eye. " You said that wizard was one of my clients? "
" Yes. Now go away. " King replied and closed the eye.
" I don't know him that well. " Eda said flopping down onto the couch making King get a little air waking him up. " And I don't like this itch he's scratching into the human. "
" Less talky, more nappy. " King clearly didn't show any signs of caring at the moment. Eda was worried, for her apprentice, from what she saw, Luz was both kind, eccentric and curious. The Owl Lady knew that there were others out there that'd want to hurt her in anway possible, and some would use any means necessary to do so. Eda knew she had more responsibility, not just as a parent, but also as a teacher too.
Looking up at the stairs, Eda sighed knowing she had to attend to this issue.
" Hey Luz? " Eda opened the door to her apprentices room. But much to her shock, she wasn't there and the window was wide open. " Aw, nuts! " She ran over to the open window. " Hooty! Where'd she go!? "
" Hoot, hoot. " The guardian stretched himself out to speak to her. " If you want the answer you seek, solve my riddle within a week- " Eda clearly wasn't having none of it and slammed her fist onto the house making a crack causing it to shake. " Ow! Okay, okay! She and Evan went into the forest towards Bonesborough. Sheesh! " Hooty retracted himself back to the door.
" Ugh! Evan too? " Eda groaned.
Meanwhile at the edge of a hill there was a sign reading: " Now Leaving Bonseburrough City Limits." There was also Luz who was accompanied with Evan.
Luz inhaled deeply. " My first mythical quest. "
Evan lifted up the map into the sunlight. " If this map is right, then it won't take to long to reach to the lake. "
" How long do you think? " Luz asked.
Evan looked at the sky. " Probably, right at sunset... " He guessed and put the map up. " Well, better get a move on. " With that said he skidded down the hill with Luz right behind him.
Continuing forward, the very area around them was filled with some sort of purple fog.
" Okay. Got my scroll, got my useful optimism, got my trust weapon. " She raised her toy sword into the air.
" By the power of Skullgar, I am out of batteries... " The toy whirred off. Evan cleared his throat getting her attention to see him giving her a look. " Oh, sorry, and my trusted companion. "
" Hmhm... " The young warlock hummed and they continued forward.
" You know Evan, I wonder if I really made the right choice by coming here... " Luz said out loud speaking out her thoughts and noticed her friend had stopped. " Hey, what are you- " She gasped in what he was seeing, it was whole entire village full of cat like creatures and some weird birds flying around. " Wow... "
" Okay, this is just weird... " The young warlock said gazing around the area walking down the street right beside Luz. " I ain't seen a place this 'fluffy'? Or gah, I lost what I was gonna say. " As they got further in for some reason some random guy came out of a fountain.
" Who the hell is this guy? " Evan asked himself.
" I see, so you're the chosen one. " He scoffed stepping. " The Celestial Staff should've picked me. Nevereth Bladestrife, Teen Prince of Angstmore. "
" Yes. Yes I did make the right choice. " Luz said gushing her gaze at the attractive male making Evan roll his eyes.
Back in Bonesburrough King was sniffing the ground right in the same alleyway he, Luz and Evan went through earlier. " This is where we met the scones. I mean, the wizard. " King told Eda who was following him, and then opened the tarp.
" Whoa! " King exclaimed in surprise. " It wasn't like this before. " The very same castle he and the teens found earlier was completely different then it was prior that day. In fact, it was completely in ruins, almost like it had been through a war, and was slowly falling apart.
" I don't like this... " Eda said and walked up the doors. Upon opening them, the inside was shown to be a total mess inside. While walking inside, she felt her shoe kick something. She bent down to pick up a large amount of rolled up scrolls. They all resembled the map Luz had, only they showed different places, with the three glowing words "The Chosen One" on each one of them.
" I really don't like this... " Eda said now confirming her suspicions were correct.
Back with Evan and Luz they'd just finished listening to Nevereths very cliche sounding backstory. While Luz was completely into it, Evan was not.
" Nevereth, your vengeful backstory is so compelling. " Luz said. " And I'm loving your animal, sidekick. " His 'animal sidekick' looked more like an onion with legs and little bat wings.
" Uh huh... " Evan muttered while the warriors pet landed on Luz's open hand.
" After my village was consumed, my heart has known nothing but vengeance. "
" Nevereth... " Luz was still listening to his story.
" Lady Luz... " Nevereth turned around doing a dramatic pose. " Do you think love can bloom on the battlefield? "
" Whoa-whoa... " Evan pushed the guy back a bit " Don't be a drama queen, dude, this ain't Lord of the Rings. "
Seeing this made Luz laugh silently very much liking what was happening. " This quest is questing in all the right ways. "
Minutes later they were now crossing a bridge. That was until something jumped out, taking them by surprise.
" Ew... " Both Evan and Nevereth said. There was a small cat person who had a messed up face and probably didn't have much brains.
" Hum-di-diddle... " The cat did a dance. " To pass the bridge, you must first solve my riddle. "
" Hit me little furry man! " Luz accepted the challenge without hesitation.
" Your quest shall stop if you fail this game. So tell me my dear, what is my name? "
" Wait, that's it? " Evan questioned in confusion.
" Hmm... " Luz noticed a name tag was taped on the cats shirt for some reason. " Uh...Chris? "
" That's it! You may cross the bridge. " The cat said before brining out a ring. " And please take this, Choosen One. It shall help you, on your journey. "
" Wow, this is amazing, thank you. " Luz accepted the offering.
" Do you need a cape? " Nevereth asked as she put the ring on.
" Nah, I think, I'm goo` "
" You can use my shirt! " The warrior cut him off showing off his very well built body taking Luz by surprise while Evan facepalmed himself for the second time that day.
" Yes! I need a cape! " She said eagerly while he tied it around her neck.
" Three cheers for the Chosen One! " While Luz was being cheered on Evan got a very odd feeling in his gut. Everything was happening so fast, and it all seemed so easy. Whatever what'd possibly would happen, Evan had to be on guard. Because if he felt this, then most likely so did his mother.
" Oh no... " Eda said gazing down at the very same cat village her son and apprentice had gone through earlier. It was just like the castle, the town was completely abandoned, no signs of life whatsoever. There were also large thorn vines sprouting all over the place
" Are you sure they came here? " Eda asked King who was sniffing around as they entered.
" Can't mistake there smells. Luz is like lemons and young naive confidence. While Evan for some reason smells chocolate with mixed personality's. " The canine demon replied.
Eda hummed at this and walked towards a cat in the fountain caught in some thorn vines. Throwing the staff aside she flicked the cat in the head. " Hey, wake up you! What've you done with Luz and Evan? " She asked picking it up and shaked it. " What's your end game? " She got no response but instead it's head spun around like it wasn't alive but instead more like a doll.
" To find your pupil, and your son, to still your wrath, look ahead and follow the path. " The cat cackled before disintegrating into dust.
" Aah! The cat man melted! " King screamed.
Eda sighed dusting herself off. " It's a trap. They want me to follow them. "
" So what do we do? " King asked.
" Ain't it obvious? " Eda retorted already knowing what had to be done.
Back with Luz and Evan they'd now entered a thicker part of the forest. Along the way, they'd apparently been invited to some fairy princess invited them to dinner. Quite frankly, Evan was bit more weirded out because most fairy's weren't as friendly as human books portrayed them.
" Thank you for inviting us to your feast princess. " Luz said to the fairy. " All your food was so tiny and cute. "
The fairy stopped making some bracelets appear. " For you Chosen One. " The young girl put them on the same arm that had the ring.
" Thank you. " She turned to the rest of the 'friends' she made. " You've all been so kind and thoughtful. I hope this quest never ends! "
" Your quest will soon come to an end. " Chris said stepping forward. " For the staff you seek is around the bend. "
" Thanks for ruining the mood Chris... " Luz said bitterly to the cat for killing the moment.
" Go on Chosen One. " Nevereth urged. " The Celestial Staff is yours. You've earned it. " Hearing those words the two of them made their way inside hearing the goodbyes behind them.
After a bit of searching and walking, Luz gasped in shock. Up ahead the path was the Celestial Staff. It was white, with a spiral surrounding a large blue crystal. It stood in a large stone podium in the lake. As they approached it the water rumbled, and a series of rocks blocks rose up making a path to the staff.
" I knew this world wasn't all doom and gloom as Eda and King said. " Luz said happily skipping ahead. " There is wonder here...And I-I think I came here for a reason. " She spun around with Evan following right behind her having an uneasy feeling. He's had it since they got near the cat village, and now, now he knew he had to step in.
As Luz approached the staff, Evan got in front of her.
" Evan, what are you doing?
" Luz... " Evan began. " As much as you don't want to hear, you're gonna. You don't need that staff... "
" What? But this is what we came here to do..I-I'm... "
" I know that...and I know you want to become a witch. But this? " He motioned to the staff. " This isn't the way to do it... "
" Then what do you want me to do!? " Luz suddenly snapped growing angry. " Just listen to Eda and work all summer until she decides when I get a staff!? "
" Yes! Okay, yes! " Evan replied and quickly calmed down. " Have you not been listening to anything I said all day to you!? Do you remember what I said back at the house? "
Luz's expression lightened and remembered his words. " You wanted to earn your staff... "
" That's right... " Evan sighed. " Luz, there's no shortcut, there never is. And being a witch, sorceress, wizard, warlock, whatever you want to call yourself. Having powerful magic and a staff isn't what's gonna you into a witch...It's just you...You alone. If you want to learn magic and earn a staff, your gonna have to work hard like the rest of us..."
Luz looked down sadly before looking at the young warlock. " Evan...Have you ever wanted to find your place in the world? Because you feel you don't belong anywhere else? "
" Sometimes... " Evan anwsered showing he was willing to listen.
" What about wanting to feel accepted by others for who you are? "
" I've had moments like that too...Overtime, I learned not to care. Luz, your people are going to judge you differently and say things about you till the day you die. " Evan bluntly said the truth before smiling. " That's why we have friends and our family to help us in tough times... "
Luz returned a smile of her own feeling more at ease listening to his kind words. Eventually she gave a sigh. " Alright Evan, I understand. "
" Understand what? "
" That I want to earn my staff as proof of becoming a witch. " Evan chuckled lightly at her response patting her on the shoulder.
" Alright, Come on. Let's head back. Mom's probably worried by now. " As they were heading back something began to happen. Behind them, the staff faded into dust, all life around them just died, the water dried up and the very place grew dark and the same purple fog from earlier came in.
" What? "
" It's a trap! " Evan cursed getting ready to cast his magic while Luz drew her toy sword. " Stay close to me...Whoever you are! Show yourself! "
" Very well done Devil Eye... " They turned to see Adegast had emerged through the mist.
" Magical wizard? "
" Luz he's no wizard! " Evan said preparing his magic.
" Your friend is right... " Suddenly the wizards eyes popped out of it's sockets and something else was seen from behind. " Your hubris has failed you, Witch Apprentice! " A large, light mauve octopus like monster appeared cackling away. It had both tentacles and arms. Yellow teeth with revealing gums, and black scleras with yellow iris's and black pupils. He has small black eyebrows and what appeared to be a sac of eggs underneath it's chin.
Within minutes, more tentacles started to emerge, they all had puppets of everyone they'd met.
" Okay, Luz don't panic. This is classice Choosen One biz. You just have to rescue everybody and defeat the final boss. "
" I am everybody! " The octopus put the wizard puppet forward scaring Luz. " You fool! Don't you see? I'm no wizard. And you're no Chosen Ones. I've tricked you. "
" Well, you better get ready for a pummeling ugly... " Evan said cracking his knuckles. " Because your going back to whatever slimly hole you crept out of! "
" Oh, I beg to differ. " The octopus said and just like that, Luz's cape wrapped around her, as did the bracelets and the ring.
" NO! Betrayed by my own cool accessories. " Luz exclaimed.
" Let her go! "
" I think not... " The octopus crawled forward. " Your mother has been stealing customers from my potions business for years! She must be destroyed. "
" Does everybody have a beef with Eda here? " Luz asked outloud.
" Pretty much... " Evan deadpanned.
" And you both lured her into my trap. All because her apprentice wanted to think she was special. "
" To bad for you, my mom isn't stupid enough to fall for your trap! "
" Yeah there's no way she'll fall for it! " Luz added backing up Evan.
" Adegast! " They knew that voice and it was Eda alongside King who'd just arrived.
" Oh crap... " Both teens cursed at their misfortune.
" Eda! I have you now! " The octopus said as more tentacles burst out of the ground ensnaring them. "
" That's right, you have me! Now release them! " The owl lady demanded.
" I didn't have to be apart of this! " King yelled out.
" Oh-ho. I have plans for your blasted child. Your apprentice on the other hand can leave...If she want's to. But I sense she want's a real fantasy. " The puppet of Chris flew past her and spewed out more of the mist.
" No! " As Evan was going to use his magic, another one of Adegast's tentacles shot out of the ground wrapping around the teen.
" Stay with us Luz. Stay with Adegast. " Puppet Nevereth said putting a hand on her shoulder. " We need you here. You could be our Chosen One. "
" Yeah, you can eat our tiny foods forever. " The fairy princess puppet added.
" Luz, why would you want to live in a world where people laugh at you? "
" It is beautiful here... " The girl admitted.
" Luz! " Eda tried getting her to snap out of it.
" And you guys think I'm special... "
" No! " Eda grunted as she, King and Evan were being squeezed.
" But it's not real! " Finally snapping out of it, she ran out of the cloud and grabbed her toy sword.
" I am a Witch's Apprentice! " Luz declared. " And I'm gonna earn my magic staff the hard way. I believed you magic man. Now feel my wrath! " She charged forward and stabbed the wizard puppet making it go poof and the ocotpus scream in pain. This caused his grip on the others to loosen and soon the right began.
A puppet of the fairy princess came forward only for Luz to swat it away. Meanwhile King was running away from a large amount of puppet cats chasing him. Seeing this Eda quickly got to work with her magic. Releasing a stream of fire making the ocotpus scream in more pain burning his tentacles.
From behind, Evan noticed the puppet Neverth coming from behind Luz. Quickly enough, the young warlock made an axe materialize from his magic. He then threw it flying right past the girl hitting the fake warrior right in the mid section. " Ah! My flawless pecs! " He poofed and Luz gave Evan a thumbs up that he returned back.
" Back off! " Adegast cried out holding out King. " Or the dog get's it! "
" I am not a- " The canine was muffled and seeing their friend being held hostage, they were forced to stop. Eda dropped her staff while Luz dropped her toy sword.
" King, I'm sorry. " Luz said. " I should've listened to you and Evan and never trusted that wizard. You were both right. He isn't mystical or magical. He's just a big slimly jerk! " She kicked the sword sending it flying right into the octopuses head. While he screamed in pain, King was freed caught by Luz and for some reason, Adegast had shrunken down.
As they were coming over the shrunken octopus tried to run only to be stopped by Evan. " Oh no you don't... " Then ignoring his screaming Evan bit off the head with a loud sickening crunch being heard. " Huh, not to bad " He gave the rest to Eda.
" Well, that's the last time I take an outside referral... " Eda said non chattingly and ate the rest of him. " Mmm. Oh, did you want some of that? " She asked Luz.
" No, I'm just confused. " Luz said sadly.
" Thinking of calling it quits, huh? " Eda said and got elbowed by her son.
" This place is nothing like I imagined. "
" Hmm. " Eda hummed and then gained an idea. " Maybe not here, but come with me. " She walked forward making her staff fly into her hand. " I got something to show you. " Luz looked over to Evan who nodded his head.
Up in the sky, Eda and the group were flying on her staff and Luz was holding onto Evan wearing a blindfold. Right about now the sun itself was setting in the distance giving the sky a nice orange color as night time slowly approached.
" Okay, you can look. " Eda said giving Luz the clear to take off her blindfold.
" Whoa... " Luz was now gazing upon the actual corpse of the titan that made up the actual boiling isle's.
" The Bone's of the Isles..." Eda said. " Up close the isles can be slimy... "
" And very stinky. " King added.
" Also really, weird... " Evan chimed in.
" And gross... " Eda finished before looking up into the sky. " But, if you look at it from a different perspective... " Up above the skull was a shooting star flashing across the sky.
" It's beautiful... " Luz finished what her mentor was going to say.
" Yeah... " King leaned up against Luz and closed his eyes.
" Eda, how'd you know that Wizard was lying? " Luz asked.
" Look, kid, everyone wants to believe they're 'chosen.' " Eda said bluntly. " But if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special, we'd die waiting. " She chuckled at that last part. " And that's why you need to choose for yourself. "
" Does that mean you'll give me a magic staff of my own? "
" Not yet... " Eda anwsered. " But...Someday. "
" What am I chopped liver? " Evan asked making Eda laugh lightly putting her arm around her son pulling him into her shoulder.
" Hehe, oh don't worry, Evan. You'll get one too someday. " Evan then glanced over to Luz and winked as if it was his way of telling her 'I told you so'. She smiled and leaned her head on Evan's shoulder with King leaning with her to enjoy the sunset.
And so, even after a long hard day, a lesson was learned and even though the Boiling Isles itself wasn't natural, even sometimes, a place like this, could have many wonders on it's own. All they'd have to do is just find them.

Devin sandsWell, I pretty much checked out every single Owl House story on here and figured why not? Plus, even though she don't look like it, Eda defiantly got a mother vibe don't she?
