Hey everyone! Here's the next chapter for Mysterious Magic. Many of you been waiting, patiently for this chapter, and here it is. The episode that changed everything in the Owl House.
Also, I've been asked the question what color is Evan's magic circle. Sorry for the confusion, but to anwser that question, it's Black.
But not only will it have an effect on just one character, there will be another.
Chapter 4
The Intruder
Two days had passed since Luz and Evan snuck into Hexside. Now while Luz completely enjoyed it, living in her actual fantasy. Evan didn't for some odd reason, he got a really weird vibe around the place, he couldn't put his finger on it, but whatever it was, it was bad. But there were two things that happened, one, they both got banned from campus. 2, they made some new friends, Willow and Gus.
Luz had defiantly sparked an instant friendship with Willow while Gus was pratically begging for Evan to let him see his collection of 'human items' as he interpected it.
Currently right now, there were storm clouds coming in and residents of the Owl House were called down by King. For what reason, they didn't know, but once they got into the living room, King was a bit 'occupied' with something else.
" Welcome to our special documentary. You are in for a special treat. " Evan said in a British accent as the lens of a camera closes in on one of King's eyes.
" Indeed. " Luz was doing the same thing. " Currently, we are witnessing quite a sight. The most fearsome creature in the world, The King of Demons, facing his natural enemy the Ducky sock. " The said ruler was trying to get the said piece of cloth off of his snout.
" And quite a struggle it is, this is something that we rarely get to see. " Evan chuckled as he was clearly enjoying this including Luz as they watched King use his back paws to rip the front of the sock, before standing up and ripped the rest off. He stomped on the pieces and began pounding on it.
" Where are you now Ducky Sock!? "
" So, why'd you call me here again? " Luz asked.
" Oh yeah... " He climbed up a table with Luz continuing to film him.
" Human Luz... " King addressed. " You've been so obsessed with witchcraft that you haven't learned anything about my kind. " He grabs the tarp. " Prepare, yourself for...Demons 101! " He threw it off revealing a makeshift panel covered with various drawings and pictures of demons. And from the looks of it, King was in teaching mode because he was wearing the hat and started pacing. " Demons like me are grim tricksters of the twilight. Creatures of sulfur and bone. "
" And cute little paws~ " Luz commented making Evan snicker while King sighed
" And cute little paws. True. " He admitted brining out a pen using it to point out the pictures. " We live only to create chaos and misery. Our only weaknesses are purified water, and passive-aggressive comments...Sometimes. "
" No, it's all the time. " Evan chimmed in.
Luz found this a bit cute. " Oh, you guys are sensitive. "
" Even demons have their inner demons... " King said taking off a picture showing a very intimidating creature with a noticable spiked shell. " The most powerful demon of all is the Snaggleback. He's a- "
" Bad boy! " Luz took a photo adding in some special effects.
" Luz pay attention! " The small canine said to the girl was absorbed in her phone. " This information could save your life someday! "
" He's actually not wrong. " Evan backed him up. " The Boiling Isles is full of dangerous creatures. So you should probably listen.
" No, no. I am so paying attention. " Luz reassured. " This is my paying attention face. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. " She nodded her head a few times before the roaring sound of thunder was heard rumbling outside.
" Uh-oh. Looks like it's gonna rain. " King said.
" And from the sound made, it's probably gonna be a big one. " Evan noted.
Luz gasped in excitement getting up. " I love the rain! " She ran to the door.
" Hey wait! " She ignored King's warning while Evan ran up to her.
She exhaled opening the door doing a spin. " I always love feeling the first few drops of rain in my hair. "
" Uh Luz... " She continued to ignore them and kneeled down to a flower.
" I bet you do too, little buddy. " A single drop of water fell onto the floor making it sizzle up dying instantly. " What? " Luz was freaked out by what she saw. Before long more drops of rain started to fall scorching everything they touched.
" Boiling Rain! " Right on que Eda came running in Luz's direction. " Everybody inside now! "
" Huh? " Luz didn't get a chance to react as Eda grabbed her by the arm and threw her inside as she entered the owl house. The sound of crashing and stuff clattering was heard.
" Phew, that was close. " Eda said in relief. " But the important thing is you didn't get hurt. "
" What about me? " Evan groaned currently he was buried underneath a bunch of stuff with Luz on top of him adding more weight.
" Sorry Evan... "
" No...Not your fault... " One of Eda's mug fell on his head. " Ow... "
Currently right now in Bones Burrow the streets were in chaos. Everyone was screaming and running for shelter, a few houses on the side of the walls came crumbling down.
From a house Willow was grabbing a few plants that were outside. A few drops of the boiling rain touched her, and with her hands full she jumped up and brought down the curtain
Elsewhere the small head who escaped from the Conformatorium was evading the rain best as she could. Luckily for her, she spotted a large hole in the side going in. A second later, a rat with a third eye on it's back was kicked out and the head hissed at the rodent.
Back at the Owl House King had just put a band-aid on Evan's forehead, and did the same with Luz's forearm. He then pulled another from his hat putting it on his snout.
" Look! Now were all boo-boo buddies! "
Luz squealed finding the act very adorable tumbling to the side against Evan's leg keeping her gaze on King. " Oh my gosh, I love you so much. "
Evan smirked at the idea. " Who me? Oh, I'm so flattered. " He said playfully making her flinch back a bit with a light blush on her cheeks making him laugh a bit. " I'm just pulling your leg. That reaction, was great. " He then looked over to Eda who was being protected by a barrier using her hands to create a ball of energy with her staff floating close by. " Mom, you sure you don't my help on this one? "
" Nah, I got it Evy. " Eda replied back using his nickname.
" Wow, a boiling rainstorm on the Boiling Isles, the weather here is so fun. "
" Yeah, we don't have weather. " Eda clarified. " We have Plagues, Gorenado's, Shail Hail, Painbows! "
" It's like a rainbow only looking at it turns you inside out. " Upon hearing this Luz tightens her hoody putting her knee's up against her chest.
" We also get snow. " Evan added getting a look from Luz. " And yes, it's normal snow like in your world. "
" Anyways, until the Boiling Rains stops. No one is allowed outside tonight. " Eda said and looked over to her son. " And Evan, that means you. "
" Oh come on. That was only one time when I was little! " Evan retorted.
" And if the rain doesn't get you, the Snaggleback will! " King said pulling out his demon book opening it showing the said demon. " They wander the rains, feeding on Boiled Tourists. "
" Well, whatever the case, this Force field spell, should protect the house from Boiling Rains. " Eda said. " And made up demons. " She mocked making King give her a blank look.
" Hoot! Well hurry up with that force field! " Hooty spoke up. " That rain is getting closer to my precious stucco! "
" Yeah, yeah. I got it. " Eda grabbed her staff placing the orb on the top of it. Doing a quick twirl the barrier around her expanded out to the house, encasing it in a large bubble, before shrinking down becoming the very shape of the building.
" Wow... " Luz was defiantly impressed. " Someday, I'd like to be as cool as Eda the Owl Lady. " She took off her hood watching her teacher come up. " Magical, sassy, surprisingly foxy for her age. "
" Heh, you should've seen my dad in action, he's just as cool doing magic like mom.
" I bet. Hey, why do they call you the Owl Lady anyway? " Luz asked since she was curious on the nickname ever since she first met her.
Eda replied. " Because, I'm so wise. "
" Because she coughs up rat bones. " Hooty said.
" I think it's because it's 'cause she gets distracted by shiny objects. " King made his comment.
" No, I don't. " Eda countered before King brought out his pen from earlier clicking it, making the fake jewel glow. Immediately Eda's iris's widened as if she was on cat nip. " It sparkles and shimmers. It shines and delights...I must have it for my nest... " She whispered the last part and lunged for the pen. Only for King to quickly hide it making Eda miss her mark.
" You have a nest? " Luz got excited. " I want a nest! " She quickly kneeled down to her mentor. " Nest party! " She then gasped in realization and looked to Evan who gave her a blank expression.
" I did not hatch from an egg if that's what your thinking. " He said and helped up his mother. " You okay? "
" Yeah...Ugh. That force field really took it out of me. " Eda said rubbing her back.
" Uh-oh... " King gained a mocking look. " Moving a little slow. Age finally catching up to ya? " Evan pulled the hat over King's face making him scream in fear. " Aaaaah! Darkness! " Eda smiled patting her son on the head and then went inside.
" This is perfect. " Luz said.
" What is? " Evan questioned.
" Since we'll be stuck in the house all night, Eda won't have any excuse not to teach me a spell. "
" But don't you want to finish our lesson? " King asked feeling a bit sad. " I was gonna let you scratch a demons tummy. Me! "
She paused realizing he was right. " Oh, uh, sorry, King. But, uh...magic? " She went inside following Eda leaving the canine displeased and his hat deflated cause his horn pierced through it.
" Don't worry, King. " Evan patted him on the head. " When she's done, I'm sure she'll want to continue. Okay? "
" Alright... "
Meanwhile Eda was seen walking through a dressing zone, dropping her staff and snapped her fingers. Upon exiting out she was in her pajama's and sighed in content laying on the couch. A shadow hovered over her, and when the owl lady opened her eyes she got startled, by Luz looking down at her with a smile.
" Oh, Eda, have I told you how rad your fang looks today? "
" Whatever it is, no. " She said plainly.
" Uh, and your hair is like...girl... "
" I'm not teaching you magic tonight. I'm sleepy. " She grabbed a nearby blanket and curled up to it. " I'm a sleepy little owl. "
" Please, Eda, please. How am I supposed to earn my witches staff if I don't know any spells? "
" Evan you teach her. "
" Oh no you don't. " He joined in. " Your her primary teacher. Plus, don't forget, you gotta fill your end of the bargain. "
" Later. Sleep. " Eda put the blanket over her face. Evan hummed in thought and came up to Luz tapping her on the shoulder He then mouthed, 'I got this.' He then pulled out the pen, King had earlier and clicked it. They heard a gasp and a whisper " Sparkle thing. "
Immediately Eda stirred sitting up letting the blanket give her an opening. She eyed the glowing pen in Evan's possesion. " Hmm? Oh, you like this? " Evan's mother lept onto the arm of the cough perched like a gargoyle.
" Ooooh... " She kept her gaze on the object and tried to take it.
" Nuh-uh. " He quickly swiped it out of her reach making the owl lady fall on the floor.
" Teach me one spell and we'll give you you're sparkle thing. " Luz explained the offer.
" I respect your cunnings. But, I also hate you for it. " Eda said making Evan kneel down with a smile and 'booped' her in the nose.
" I learned from the best. " He said making her chuckle, because he wasn't wrong.
Minutes later they got set up with Eda resuming her teaching role.
" You wanna a staff like mine? Don't...make me...repeat myself. " She dozed off but woke up. " Witch and Warlock staffs have power embedded into them. "
" Gimme! " Luz said eagerly.
" But, before one is earned, every Witch and Warlock needs to know how to cast spells on their own. " She tosses the staff aside. " Now, tonight, I'll be teaching you how to create, Light... "
Eda made a small circle made from gold energy. The circle soon materialized a small orb of light. The orb descended down right to Luz's face and popped like a bubble making her gasp in amazement.
" Yawn! " King commented from the sidelines. " Who needs another boring spell lesson, when you could be learning all the fun ways a demon could kill you. " He held up drawing showing a demon eating someone. " Look how teethy. Bite, bite. "
" Be quiet. I need to focus. " King slumped down hearing this while Eda's lesson continued.
" Now, humans think magic is made out of thin air, but that's stupid. Everything comes from something. Let me ask you, kid. Where do you think magic comes from? " Eda questioned.
" Uh...from the heart? " She anwsered and no doubt it was from the books she read.
" Actually, you're right. " Luz was super happy with that awnser.
" No really... " Eda pulls out a scroll from her hair and unrolls it to reveal a very disturbing sight. " It comes from a magic bial sack attached from a with and warlocks heart. " It showed a large green sack attached to the said organ.
" Oh, gross! Can I keep that? "
" No. " Eda was weirded out by her request putting the scroll back in her hair.
" So does that mean Evan has one to? " She looked over to the said warlock in question.
" Actually...No. "
" Huh? " Luz was confused gazing over at Evan and back at Eda who began to explain.
" You see some very rare cases, a witch and warlock who aren't born with a bile sack is still able to do magic. And like I said, it's rare, only one out of a million are born with natural magic. But enough of that gross business. Now, everything depends on the spell circle. The bigger the spell circle, the more powerful the spell. " She drew another circle only it was larger, creating an even larger ball of light that dispersed instantly.
" But how can I, little ol' Luz, do spells if I don't have a magic bile...sac? " Luz brought up a pretty decent question.
" Speaking of which, I've been curious about that too. " Evan looked to his mother. " How are you going to teach her magic if she can't cast them herself? "
" You know, I'm not actually sure. " Eda replied.
" What? " Both Luz and Evan said at once.
" I know witches did magic differently in the past, but I never bothered to figure out how. " She laughed snorted.
" Eda! "
Luz's mentor kneeled down. " Don't worry...You'll figure it out. " Eda ruffled Luz's hair while the teen was pouting.
" Now... " She stood back up making her bones crack. " Oof, I need to lie down. " She proceeded to walk off.
" Wait that's it? Wait! " Luz made her stop. " I need you to do the circle thingy again. "
" Luz come on, mom's tired... "
" Thank you... " Eda said in relief that at least someone was looking after her well being.
" Come on please? " Luz brought out her phone. " I'll record it on my phone this time. " She started doing that. " Smile! You're on camera. One more spell won't kill ya. "
Eda looked to Evan who shrugged his shoulders making her groan. " Fine. " She proceeded to make another spell circle. " Now, you the spell circle is really key because... " The spell circle wasn't holding and with a yawn it dispersed. " Ooh boy. " She also lost her footing falling down on the floor face flat.
" Well looks like one more spell killed your mom Evan. " King commented making the warlock smack him behind the head while Luz yelped flipping the owl lady over.
" Oh my gosh, my obsession with spells knocked out Eda. I'm a monster! "
" Bap! " He tapped his paw on her nose not getting a reaction. " Yeah she's out. Bap! " He did it again laughing away and noticed Evan glaring at him. " What? Just wanted to be sure. "
" We should get help right? " Luz asked and quickly got up.
" Oh no you don't! " Evan grabbed her by the hooding dragging her back. " Have you seriously forgotten what's going on out there? "
" Yeah, Boiling Rains remember? " King added.
" No, let her try. It'll be funny. " Hooty said making Evan draw a small black spell circle causing the door to slam hard. " Ow! I was just joking! Hoot! "
" But what if Eda's dead!? " Luz exclaimed in worry gesturing to her mentor.
" Shiny thing...Big nest... " They heard Eda mumble as she started to snore.
Evan gave her a bored expression. " You were saying? "
" Remember when her head got cut off last week? " King questioned Luz. " That woman can survive anything. She's probably just tired from staying up all night chasing shrews and voles. " Evan cleared his throat walking towards his mother.
" Anyways...Hyup. " He lifted her up with very little effort. " Let's get her to bed. "
Minutes later, they arrived in Eda's room, King opened the door and Evan got inside heading towards his mother's nest. Luz went up ahead and pushed aside a random rat skeleton allowing Evan to put her inside and walked to the other side of the room.
" Sorry, for pushing you Miss Eda. " Luz apologized and grew nervous. " Please, don't hurt me when you wake up. "
" Should I bap her again? " King asked eagerly.
" No. " Evan came back with a blanket throwing it on her. " Just let her rest you little troublemaker. " He lightly petted the canine. " Plus, don't worry about her being mad, it'll fine. "
" You sure? "
" Yeah, come on, let's head back down. " Luz followed Evan out the door.
" Bap! " King did it once more cackling away and followed the two teens out.
Minutes later, back down stairs, Evan was reading from a stack of magazines, while King was drawing a demon from one of the books he was reading.
" Yeah, yeah. "
They both heard a groan and turned to see Luz trying to draw a spell circle with nothing happening. " This is all she does, why do you have to be so cryptic Owl Lady? "
" She ain't trying to Luz. " Evan said keeping his eyes on the magazine. " Plus, don't forget, you don't have one of those gross magic bile sacks. You can't just draw them out of thin air, like the rest of us. "
" What do you suggest then? "
Evan looked at Luz. " Find different alternatives on how you could do magic. And besides, mom is right, you'll figure out, and we'll do what we can to help. "
" Alright... " She quickly gained an idea. " Speaking of help...Evan can I ask you some questions? "
Evan hummed at this request and dropped the magazine. " I don't mind. What do you want to know? "
" How many different types of magic are there? "
" Lot's of them actually, not just like the typical elements you read in those fantasy books. And there's also different ones, for pratically almost everything. And depending on your experience, some magic ain't easy to cast. "
" Oh! Can you show me a different spell? "
" Well, I guess so. But you should keep in mind, sometimes you gotta get creative. "
In response Evan drew two small black spell circles meters away from his hand. Once that happened, two strong surges of electricity pulsated in between his hands. He then threw it to the wall breaking a vase. " Okay, that wasn't the original idea... " Evan exclaimed. " Now you saw what I did just now? That's being creative with your magic. Sometimes this can help you get out of a tight corner in a fight. The bottom line is, the more knowledge and spells you know, the longer you get you stick around. Get what I'm saying? "
" Yeah...That was pretty cool. What else can you do? "
" Hey, you know what's really interesting? " King came up to Luz grabbing her attention. " Let me tell you about the most spine-chilling demon. " He raised up the notepad.
" Smoochy-pie the Sweetie Baby! " It was a drawing of some weird looking fish with arms.
" King, I seriously doubt that thing is as deadly as you describe it. " Evan said bluntly.
" I know, I know...But...H-He's a lot more threatening than his name implies. "
" No offense bud, but I'll believe it when I face it. "
" Not now King, I want to figure out this spell. But if I don't have a magic sac, what's the point? " She asked herself. " I'll just be twirling my fingers around unmagically forever. "
" Why do you want to learn magic so bad anyway? "
" I was a nobody back home. But becoming a witch is my chance to be someone. " She sat down against the couch. " Do you know what it's like to have no one take you seriously? "
" If I help you learn that spell could we finish our lesson? "
" Oh, yes, yes. " Luz said eagerly. " You can teach me about demons all week if you can help learn this spell. "
" And how exactly are you going to do that King? " Evan questioned.
" Well, she said witches and warlocks used to do magic differently, so there has to be a way right? " He did a small scribble and showed what he drew. " And I have a theory. Every day, I notice sneaking drinks of this special elixir, see? Then she always gets a boost of energy, see? I think that's where she get's her power. And I know where to get some! "
" Really? "
" Si. " King replied and got taken into one of Luz's hugs spinning him around.
" Thank you so much. You're a prince. "
" King. " The canine corrected. " I'm King. "
" Whoa-whoa... " Evan spoke up getting in between them. " Time out for a minute. I'm sorry guys, but there's no way your getting that. "
" What? "
" Look, King I know what you're talking about. But the thing is, mom is very serious about no one touching those elixirs. "
" How do you know? " Luz questioned.
" Well, truth be told, one time when I grabbed one, mom was pissed, and she grounded me for it. " He cleared his throat. " The point being, we'll figure this out. So, you guys, don't mess with that stuff. " He leaves the room.
" Where are you going? "
" Eh, gonna go read. I'm bored... " Evan replied back going up the stairs leaving King and Luz by themselves.
Luz sat down in the couch. " So much for that... "
" Oh come on Luz, let's just do it. "
" No, King. I don't want to get in trouble. "
" Hey, if Eda has one then she's got more. Besides, who says we have to tell them? " He whispered. " What they won't know won't hurt. Plus, you want to learn magic right? " Luz pondered on the thought and remembered what Evan told her, primarily him her that there was no easy path to learning magic. But on the other hand, the urge of wanting a place where she could belong was to much and she sighed in defeat feeling bad for doing what she was going to do.
King made his way up the stairs silently enough so he wouldn't be heard. While he managed to sneak past Evan, there was still one last major obstacle. It was Eda, who was still fast asleep. He opened the door making it creak, and he noticed she was rolling around in her sleep still snoring away.
" Now where could it be? " King wondered as he looked around the room. Soon enough, he spotted a glass vial filled with an orange substance and cork cap. With his target in sight he silently walked forward and heard a metal clang. He quickly retracted his leg avoiding a bear trap snapping shut. " Nice try! "
Suddenly the trap opened an eye and gained two small legs. " Nah, my heart wasn't in it. " The trap said before running off. King continued sneaking through, climbing up a tied curtain and got onto the night stand where the elixir was. He noticed it had a small tag that read: " An elixir a day. " He read out loud not noticing the bottom looked like it was torn off. " Cryptic. " He tore off the tag and stuffed it into his collar before grabbing the elixir jumping down to the floor.
Once down, he looked hesitant for a moment looking to Eda and back at the vial. " Uh...Nah... " Shaking his head he quickly ran out letting the Owl Lady continue her sleep.
Minutes later King arrived down in the kitchen and was on the table. " Got it! " He gave the elixir to Luz who was wearing a cat bib.
" Wow..." Luz popped off the cork gazing at the vial. " I can't believe I'm about to learn magic. Real magic! This is historic... " closing her eyes she tipped the elixir to drink the contents. But then, the sound of thunder taking her by surprise. This ultimately led up to Luz dropping it onto the floor shattering on impact. " Golden elixir. Gone! This is awful! "
" Who needs a light spell, when we have tons of lamps? " King asked gesturing to the said lights that brightened before turning off. King groaned at this and explained. " Hooty controls the house lights. He probably just fell asleep. " All the sudden they heard a loud crash coming from the front followed by screaming.
" Hoooot! Hoooooot! Hoot! "
" Hooty! " Taking off her bib, and King perching himself on her shoulder the duo rushed out of the kitchen.
Upon entering the living room, they found it completely in shambles, the furniture was all torn up, window's were shattered and claw marks all over the walls. But right in front of them was the door broken down, along with Hooty who's eyes were now X's. Above it was the shadow of a large creature who caused the damage. Raking four long claw marks, the creature's glowing orange eyes narrowed at the trio, before 'swoosh' it disappeared into the rain.
" Hooty! Are you in there!? " They ran towards the guardian. Luz pocked it and tried to open one of his eyes. He was clearly not dead, but unconscious. " Whatever did this escaped out into the rains! What could survive that? "
King traced some nearby claw marks trying to think and came to a conclusion." Oh my gosh the Snaggle Back! It feeds during the rains, it must've stumbled upon our house, and seen us inside. " A loud ear piercing screech was heard and they saw something rush towards them. And before long they watched as it jumped high crashing through upper window of the owl house.
" This is terrifying...So why do you look so happy!? " Luz questioned King who was giggling like a kid in a candy store.
" Because this could be a lesson. " He replied back. " This would be a great way for you to see a wild demon up close in person. "
" You want us to go towards those creepy sounds? No way! " Luz said before another scream was heard coming from inside the house.
" That's Evan! " King recognized his friend's voice anywhere. " We gotta go now! "
Luz groaned knowing he was right, and the fact that Evan was the closest friend she had. " Okay. "
Minutes later, the duo got into the kitchen to arm themselves, mostly by wrapping duct tape around themselves to put a pillow in place. The three of them also grabbed weapons, Luz choose a hockey stick, while King for some reason picked a stuffed bunny.
The two paused at the bottom of the stairs, the only light they had was the flashlight from Luz's phone. With just a decent amount of light to guide their way forward going up the stairs and slowly making their way through the hallways. The duo's first stop, was Evan's room.
" Oh no... " Luz gasped in fear and rushed forward. The reason why was because the door was broken off the hinges and there was no sign of the young warlock anywhere.
" Evan got Snaggle Backed! " King cried out in fear and was on the verge of tears.
" We gotta get to Eda! " Quickly the duo rushed to Eda's room bursting through the doors, only to find it in shambles, with the broken glass scattered across the floor which was the result of the demon breaking in.
" Oh my gosh, Eda! "
" No! The Snaggleback got Eda! " King said fearfully while Luz rushed forward into the nest. " Eda? " She didn't find her teacher, but instead a single pillow covered in clawmarks. " No...slash marks...King! You're the demon expert. I need your help! "
" I'll go get my demon book. " King rushed out the room unaware that something came flying over him. He came back with two different books. " Wait, wait, first edition or second condition? " He asked and got no response gasping in fear dropping both in the process. " Luz? The Snaggleback got her too!? " He heard something whoosh behind him.
" You crazen beast! Give me back my boo-boo buddies! " He yelled out on the top of his lungs chasing after it. Once he turned to the corner he gasped again to see one of Luz's shoes right in front of a door that closed. " Luz... " He sadly picked it up and glared forward opening the door. With the shoe as a makeshift weapon, he searched through the closet and spotted something hiding behind the coats.
" There's nowhere for you to run! " He moved the coats aside and he clearly wasn't expecting to see what was behind. " Snaggleback? " The said demon turned out actually to be a small pink monkey like creature with a spiked shell. " Wow. You are a lot shorter in person "
" I-I'm sorry! I'm sorry! " Snaggleback stammered. " I-I just needed a place to hide from the rains. "
" Then why di you break down our door and grab my friends? " King questioned. " That's not cool man. Bad Snaggleback! "
" I-I didn't do any of that stuff! " He anwsered much to King's confusion. " I snuck in through a window just now. "
" Huh? Well, then what... " A loud crash was heard taking him by surprise as a large hand grabbed Snaggleback.
" Oh no! A twist! " He screamed out and was pulled back into the hole that was just made. Fearfully King stepped back and another crash was heard including a yell with a snarl. King whimpered in fear as the door slowly creaked open, revealing the creature they saw from earlier, spitting out Snaggleback's shell. It then roared walking towards him.
" Oh my... " He landed on his end and scooted backwards into the wall. " Stay back! Hey, hey. I am the King of demons, okay? And as such I demand you to barf my friends back up! " Instead, he ducked an incoming slash and quickly ran underneath it to escape running through the halls with the creature hot on his tail. As he contined running, something pulled him into a room and gently closed the door.
The creature snorted in annoyance walking right past them thinking the prey would be somewhere else. As for the one who saved him, it was none other then his human friend. " Luz? "
" King... " She lowered him down and kneeled down to his level. " Oh, I'm so glad you're safe. "
All the sudden they heard a groan coming from inside the closet cuboard. Silently they made their way to it, and opened it up and much to their relief it was Evan.
" Evan... " Luz quickly dragged him out and lightly patted him on the cheek to wake him up. " Evan...Evan, wake up. "
" Huh!? " He shot up awake rapidly looking at his surroundings. " Who? What? "
" Come on, take it easy. " King said. " Evan what happened? "
" I don't know... " Evan rubbed his forehead. " All, I remember, was me listening to my music, reading some manga, and then, the lights when out. Then I went to grab a lantern, and then the next thing I know, something freakin jumped me. What's going on guys? "
" Evan we don't know... " Luz anwsered sadly.
" And we can't find Eda either. " King informed much to the young warlock's misfortune before looking to Luz. " And, Luz, where did you go? "
" I was checking on Eda, and she was gone, and then you were gone. " She explained. " I also tripped and lost my shoe. Oh hey you found it! " She grabbed the shoe she was missing.
" I-I-What's that? " King noticed something was stuck to the human girls foot and took it off. It was a tag reading: " Keeps the Curse at bay. " He read and gasped in realization pulling the same tag he tugged into his collar earlier. The two pieces came together. " An elixir a day, keeps the Curse at bay. " He read out loud reading the complete tag.
" Curse? Wait, what are you trying to say? "
" Hold on second, elixir? What did you guys do? " Both teens were throwing out their questions.
" I was wrong the whole time... " King said with worry. " That's no snaggleback, that creature is... " King was cut off when an arm came bursting through the door taking the trio by surprise.
Before long, the said monster burst through the door. And they were beyond shocked especially, Evan.
His mother was now an owl like monster, with black-colored eyes and long pointed ears. Her hair was more gray, and she had a bunch of grey hair growing from the ears. Her body is covered in dark teal fur, and she has her two black-grey wings. The legs were black color and the feet look more like a bird's feet. And she wasn't wearing any clothing either.
" Eda/Mom!? " Both teens exclaimed in surprise and watched as the Eda crawled towards them and snarled raising a claw into the air.
" NO! " Evan was about to cast a spell and at the same time Luz screamed bracing for whatever could happen. She didn't pay attention when her phone dropped on the floor emitting a bright camera flash. This caused the transformed witch's eyes to retract almost looking normal before she ultimately screamed sounding like she was in pain rubbing her eyes.
Taking the oppertunity Luz picked up King and with Evan's help they jumped out of the window. The roar of the monsterized witch echoed through the house.
We now see the trio hiding behind a small stone wall on the upper balcony of the house.
And Eda was very close by on the prowl sniffing the air, trying to find her prey. Evan passed Luz a small tin can that was nearby and nodded. She threw the can and covered her ears as the metal object clattered, the owl beast screeched, rushing off into that direction.
Evan peaked his head to look around and ducked back down. He quickly whispered. " She's gone. "
" Oh man...Did you see her eyes? They were like... " She did a snarl and widened her eyelids.
" Yeah, I noticed that to. " Evan said and shook his head in confusion. " But I don't understand, what the hell caused this? "
" Don't you see? " King spoke up. " The elixir I gave to Luz doesn't give Eda powers, it prevents her from turning into that thing! " He slumped down in shame. " She turned into a nightmare and it's all my fault! " He then looked to his friends. " I'm so sorry Evan, I should've listened listened to you...I-I just wanted to Luz to be into demons like she was into magic. You're my only friend, and I messed up. I just wanted to have some attention and maybe if I taught her, then finally I'd have someone else would care about creatures like me. "
Luz picked up the pen. " Well, let's finish the lesson... "
" Huh? " King was confused.
" Eda's turned into some kind of demon, and we need to save her. "
Evan put a hand on the little canine's shoulder. " That's right, and who else knows more about demons then one of best that we do? " King pointed to himself and both teens nodded their heads taking the pen and giggled like crazy hugging them both. With that done, King grabbed some leaves and drew Eda's face starting their plan on how to save her.
" Let's see, she was bigger, covered in feathers, and had giant black eyes. "
" Demons with black eyes hate light right? " Evan questioned.
" Correct! " King replied pleased to know he got it right. " But where are we- " He paused noticing Luz's phone. " That's it! Light! Luz, use your human rectangle. "
" I can't my camera's all blasted. " Luz said showing the screen was cracked.
" Then what about that light spell? " King questioned. " Evan can you do it? "
" Unfortunately no. I never bothered learning it. " The warlock regretfully informed.
" And I can't draw circles in the air. " Luz chimed in. " I'm not like Eda or Evan. " She pressed the screen replaying the video she recorded from her teacher earlier.
" The spell circles is really- " All the sudden the phone started glitching and just like that some sort of strange symbol appeared. It was a large triangle in the circle with a smaller triangle and circle on top. Down the middle a long line with two smaller lines across, side by side within the large triangle.. Luz gasped upon seeing this.
" There's a pattern in the spell circle! "
" What? Where!? " Both King and Evan peered over her shoulder to see it was true. Luz then grabbed a leaf and took King's pen.
" It looks something like this. " Laying it down, she traced the symbol drawing an exact match. " There. " She tapped it and then the leaf suddenly scrunched up and glowed before becoming a ball of light. She gently lifted it up with her hands. " It's beautiful. Oh my gosh. I just did magic...I just did magic! " She cried out standing up. " I just did-MMph! " Her mouth was covered by Evan.
" Quiet! " He whispered.
Luz blushed in embarrassment. " Sorry. "
" We're not going to stop anything with something that small! " King commented and Eda's screech was heard making them quickly duck back down. " So what do we do now? "
" Evan, I think I know how to get your mom back. " She held out her fist. " Will you help me, boo-boo buddies? "
King scoffed lightly. " I'm over that little nickname, but okay. "
Evan smiled. " Count me in. " They both gave her a fist bump.
Back in the living room Eda was moving about continuing her search, but was having no luck. That was until the sound of clicking was heard. Her attention was drawn, to King who lit up his pen standing in the door way.
" Oh, what lovely thing, do we have here? It's just so dang shiny. Oh my, oh dear. " Even though Eda was in her monster form, the witch was so entranced by the glow looking at it in awe. She then lunged forward and King began to run.
As she was closing in on him, he jumped to the side up against a wall, as for Eda she slipped on some books making a crash stop. She slowly got up, growling in annoyance.
" Snap out of it mom! This isn't you! " She snapped her head back looking towards Evan. Slowly she crawled right towards him and roared in his face. While Evan had his eyes closed waiting, for whatever could happen, the opposite happened.
Instead of attacking, instead the transformed witch stopped and took a few whiffs. Upon doing so, Eda emitted a low gentle chirping noise rubbing her head against her child.
Evan sighed sadly. " Mom... " Slowly he reached his hand out towards her, at first she was hesitant but she leaned her head forward. " There, there mom...So this what you've been hiding haven't you? " Evan was sure he saw a the owl beast gain a sad look. " You're still in there huh? You don't really want to hurt us...but you can't help it can't you? " He got a low growl in response and Evan pressed his forehead against the beast.
" Listen...Whatever happens...I love you...and...Forgive me... " All the sudden dozens of chains emerged from spell circles coming from different angles trapping the owl beast in place. Eda struggled to break free from her bindings. As this happened, Evan was on the verge of tears. It broke his heart to see his only mother like this.
" I'm sorry mom...But this is for your own good! " He snapped his head back to Luz who'd just finished drawing the symbol. " Luz, do it now! "
With a grunt, Luz slammed her hand on the symbol with erupted in a powerful light. The transformed witch screamed as the bright light enveloped the whole entire house.
Back up stairs, Eda shot awake, with a long clear tube in her mouth. She was confused by this for a moment.
" Ahh! " She freaked out noticing half of her face was still transformed. She quickly slurped up more of the elixir. As this happened the jewel on her chest returned back to it's original color with the black fading away. The rest of her face also returned to normal.
" W-What happened? " She was confused by what happened. " Oh, I have the worst headache. And my mouth tastes like roadkill. " Right on que she threw up a large pellet which split open revealing the Snaggleback was still alive.
" I'm just gonna...lie here for a minute... " The pink simian said.
" Hmm... " She noticed the elixir picking it up. " I was looking for that. "
" Actually, we found an extra one in your closet. " King said walking up to her.
" King? " She put the pieces together. " King! You stole my elixir!? I oughta break every bone in your- "
" Shh! " King cut her off. " Over there. " He whispered pointing over to the corner where Evan was using his magic to repair the broken window and other damage. Nearby Luz was drawing the light symbol on multiple pieces of paper. After a tap, they'd curl up and become balls of light.
" Can I try that? " Evan asked her and she nodded. After receiving the pen he drew the symbol the best way he could replicate it. He tapped it making the paper crumble up into a light ball making him chuckle. " Now that's something...Cool... "
Eda was bewildered by what she was seeing. " Wow... " She looked up gazing at the light orbs floating in the room. " How is she doing that? "
" I don't know, but she did it all on her own. " King was just as amazed as she was. He then knew what was coming next. " Hey, I, Uh, kind of messed up a bunch of things back there. And I just wanted to say, I'm sorry. "
" Well you better be. " Eda said firmly making him flinch. " I got a long list of disgusting chores with your name on it. But, it's not entirely your fault. "
" No it's not. " Evan came up to her along with Luz. He stat down at the edge of the nest. " So, you want to tell us what's going on? "
Eda sighed knowing she had to come out clean. " I haven't been completely honest with you guys. You included Evan..." She paused for a moment. " When I was younger, I was cursed, I don't know how exactly it happened. " She picked up the vial right next to her gazing down at it. " All I know is that If I don't take my elixir, well, that's why people call me the Owl Lady. Nobody like's having a curse, but, if you take the the right steps, it's...manageable. "
" Mom... " Eda looked to her son. " Why didn't you tell me this sooner? "
" Evan, I didn't want you to worry about me. It's my job to worry about you. "
" Well your wrong. " Evan disagreed taking her hand and clasped it with both of his. " Were supposed to look have each others back, aren't we? " Eda put a hand on her child's cheek with a weak smile.
" Evan...If I did tell you, then you'd probably waste your time helping me... " She said sadly and sighed once again shaking her head. " Your dad knew about it too...He was there from the start when I first got it. He relentlessly looked at every possible lead to rid me of this curse even it took his whole life...I didn't want to put that burden on you either... "
" Whoa... " Luz breathed out by the sudden plot twist. " So are you okay now? "
" There's nothing to worry about. It's all under control. "
" Is it? " Evan was clearly not buying it making Eda kiss her sons forehead.
" Evan, I promise you it is. And as long as no one steals my elixir...King... " She glared pointing at the canine. " Then I'm fine. But hey, look at this. " She motions to Luz. " A human doing magic. Good on you kid. "
" I had some encouragement from a great teacher. " She said looking at King.
" Oh, you... " He gave a playful wave at the compliment.
" Hey, hey! " Another familiar voice was heard echoing through the house. " Is anyone there? Hello? Hoot. I'm on the floor. It's cold! "
" Well, looks someone's finally up. " Evan commented flatly.
" That voice... " King thought differently. " That horrific voice! " He exclaimed in annoyance trudging out of the room.
" We'll take care of him. You stay in bed. " Luz said before picking up Snaggelback. " Come on, you goopy fella. We'll set you free now. "
" Ow, ow, ow. I think my tail was digested. " She made her way out of the room leaving with Evan who paused at the door looking back at her.
" If you need help mom, just let know okay? I love you. "
" Love you too Evy. " Eda replied using his nickname and sighed in content once the door was closed. Now that everything had finally calmed down, she drifted off to sleep.
Inside of Eda's sleep a dream was occurring. The very area was dull gray and there was a door right in front of her. A lot of low whispering was heard as well.
" No...Not this memory again... " The door suddenly opened revealing light and a shadow that made out the silhouette of a person
" You! You're the one who cursed me aren't you? " She got no replies but only more whispers. " Who are you? Who are you!? " As she reached the door suddenly slammed shut making her tumble back and the area completely turned pitch black.
Eda had bumped into something, and the sound of deep low growl caught her attention. Looking up she locked her eyes with two solid glowing red orbs that stared down at her, she was terrified, frozen in fear. The only thing she could do was scream as it roared lunging it's open jaw at her.
She suddenly shot up awake gasping in shock. She quickly examined her surroundings and was a bit relieved to know that it was only a dream. " Oh... " Eda turned to her right and picked something off the night stand it was cracked frame picture. Using her magic, she repaired the crack to reveal 3 different pictures in order. Mainly some of which showed herself when she was younger.
The photo in the right, showed Eda standing along side her husband, and four other individuals who were all wearing Hexside uniforms. To the left it showed Eda holding Evan as an infant with a bright smile on her face. Finally in the middle it showed her in a wedding dress with her arm locked with her lover who was wearing a very fine tux.
Eda placed it on the night stand and sighed sadly wiping away a stray tear looking outside. " I really, wish you were here Phil... "
Downstairs the Owl House was now fully repaired thanks to Evan's magic. In fact by now, the sun had risen in the distance putting an end to the rain.
" Well, that's the last of it... " Evan said dusting his hands off while Luz was putting bandaged on the claw marks on the door that made up Hooty's body.
" Welcome to the boo-boo buddy club Hooty. "
" Finally, I get to be apart of something! " The guardian said happily. King was currently writing down the descriptions from Snaggelback's encounter with demonized Eda.
" And then she had teeth in her stomach. Teeth in her stomach! Can you believe that?
" Oh yeah. This'll make a great addition to my demon book. " King replied showing a drawing of Curse Eda and the notes he jotted down.
" That book is filled with so many interesting things. Like this. " Snaggelback picked up the book showing the picture of him. " I'm one of the strongest demons on the Boiling Isles, huh? "
" Yeah, I'm gonna have to edit that. " King commented.
" Oh... " The demon said sadly.
