I start to deviate a little away from Masakox here. For one thing, I go into a deeper dive on the family lives of Goku's grandparents. I also made a grandfather of Goku, Gine's father, more on him later. I'm not sure how old Masakox said Gine was when the war ended or if she was born at all; I think the nursing capsules were introduced shortly after the war was over, and if Gine was a baby she would probably still be put in one until she was around three. I'll tell you more on the details later, first read the story, and I'll deep dive after.
Kiru was an angry soul. She would not let herself be pushed around by anybody. She was born into a large litter of Saiyans, with parents who regarded the lot of them a pack of wild beasts. It was a cutthroat family, stepping on each other's necks for food. She fought for each meal, and for her own alone time. It was difficult to consider her siblings family, though she did respect her parents well enough for refusing to cow down to the brats. One thing she could thank her siblings for was giving her strength and a strong fighting spirit. She was happy enough not to see them again when she came of age. She quickly made a hut of her own, enjoying her own solitude. Occasionally, she would pick fights with Saiyan brutes who didn't know any better.
When the Saiyan-Tuffle war resurfaced she gladly joined the fight. Like the beetles she squashed as a child, she loved crushing those who hopelessly chose to stand against her. Each victory made her feel stronger, and each meal afterwards tasted all the more better. Within her regimen, that was where she Auber. She was only within a regimen because their King said Tuffles could find a way to overpower a single Saiyan. She didn't find that fair, fighting alone against a large group of Tuffles was a better way of proving her strength.
Kiru had snuck away from her regimen one day, tired of all the other Saiyans she had to butt heads with. She hoped to find a scouting party of Tuffles and wipe them out herself. She had found a party, and she intended to crash it. She loved the looks of horror on their faces as she attacked them full on, killing a good dozen. However, when there were but a few left, one of them hit a button on some remote. Some machines popped out of the ground circling Kiru, and before she could react it gave her massive shock. The Tuffles explained that of course they wouldn't scout without insurance, for they couldn't even take on one Saiyan. However, their machines give them strength. They'd keep her incapacitated until they were far enough away, and then they would detonate the device, killing her. Kiru started to think that maybe the King had a point. This was going to be a shameless way to die, letting the Tuffles successfully test their machine.
It was then that Auber showed up.
"You're in quite the pickle," he said.
"Don't need to rub it in," she grunted through the pain.
"This is why you shouldn't go off on your own. The King had a reason for keeping us clustered like that; it's hard to keep our numbers up as it is. It's one thing that the Tuffles have over us."
"Do you have a death wish or something? This thing will blow up if we don't get out of here."
"I am here to rescue you."
"I don't need rescuing."
"Okay, how about you get out right now then?"
Kiru tried to slam herself out of the electric current keeping her immobilized, but it was too painful to break through. "Are you sure you don't need help?" he grinned. "As you said, you're going to die if you stay here."
"Better to die then have you ruin my reputation as one who needed to be rescued."
"I won't tell anyone," he said raising his hands. "I snuck away like you did."
"Why?"
"If you want to know, allow me to save you."
"Fine," she grunted. Auber smashed each machine into bits, breaking its current, and disabling its future detonation. "So why'd you follow me? Better yet, why didn't you jump in?"
"It looked like you had it handled; I didn't want to steal your fun. As for why I followed you, I felt like you were going to get yourself into trouble. You tend to be reckless when you fight."
"You came to babysit me!? Not only that but you've watching me?! What type of freak are you?"
"Hey, just so you know, I'm in the clean-up crew. I watch everyone's backs so they can get back to base without being followed. Sometimes I get the shift where I hunt and prepare food for the canteen, I also tend to not as serious wounds so Saiyans can get back out and fight again. It's kind of my job to take care of everyone. You're difficult because you don't like being taken care of."
"It's a dog eat dog world, I'm not going to pretend to be kind just so I can get a warm meal and get my boo-boos kissed. I can easily take care of it myself."
"You think my job is meaningless. If Saiyans don't have to be concerned with staying alive they can focus on getting stronger, enough to end this war."
"I don't want the war to end. I get a fight every day this way."
"Don't you want our race to thrive? What if we're all wiped out? Don't you want the Saiyans to claim this planet? Don't you want to eliminate the Tuffles who think we're nothing but animals?" Huh, thought Kiru, he had a point.
"How'd you get saddled as a Saiyan nanny?"
"Same as you, they evaluated my know how and skills and deemed it appropriate for me."
"You know how to care for people?"
"My father was…introspective," he said almost uncomfortable with the world. "My mother liked spending time in nature, was almost an animal herself. My father found her curious in how she chose to live and act. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with her, learning what can heal, how to be attuned to my senses, and what was very satisfying to eat."
"Any siblings?"
"Maybe? My father would visit her a bunch, but once I discovered where my father lived, I chose to live with him." Kiru found it odd that animals like his mother were more caring than her own parents. He did have a point though; she didn't want to be humiliated like that again. She had to be stronger and faster if she wanted to be top dog, which meant she had to focus less on taking care of herself.
"So you were so determined to take care of me, huh?"
"I thought you would be a good challenge."
"And you're not at all angry that you aren't one of the main fighters?"
"I fight on the front lines sometimes, that's enough. I'm more satisfied when I stop Tuffles from making sneak attacks or those who try to uncover our hideouts, makes me feel like the sentinel of Saiyan-kind."
"Let's strike a deal…what was your name again?"
"Auber."
"Alright, Auber…never come to save me again; I'll be attempting to make myself stronger so I won't need any assistance, but to do that, I'll need someone to care for me in the meantime. So you'll be my personal caretaker."
"Other Saiyans might be mad if you steal me for yourself like that," he grinned.
"Let me be mad, I'll fight anyone who goes against me. I don't like to share," she glared at him.
"Alright," he said. "We should probably head back before the Tuffles blast this place for their device not going off."
"We could chase after them," she suggested.
"That might take us to the city, and do you want to fight a whole city right now?" She growled.
"Rest, recover and you'll get stronger from that alone," he assured. "I've seen it hundreds of times. Once you heal up, you'll be able to take on a city."
Kiru took Auber's advice, she rested more, she ate more meals prepared by him and she let him patch her up after fights. Kiru indeed got stronger. Men started to notice, and they gave her more unwanted attention than usual. Some Saiyan women started picking fights with her too, because Auber was quite the catch. He was a man who would always have your back in a fight, who wouldn't want that? Kiru thought they were being ridiculous, because he was just her caretaker, simple as that. One day it all reached a head when Auber proposed marriage. He got slammed into the ground for that. Kiru furiously accused him of thinking that just because he was her personal caretaker that she would suddenly develop feelings for him.
"We're both getting unwanted attention," he claimed. "You more so than me; it's a distraction from what really matters."
"I told you I can take them," she argued.
"You want to focus on this more than getting stronger for the war effort?"
"I consider this training." He groaned.
"It's annoying honestly; they're only going after us because we don't have established mates. If we were to get married, they'd leave us alone."
"You do know getting married means we'll have to reproduce? It's the whole reason Saiyans get married, to establish their mate; to make more warriors, to keep our race from dying out."
"I don't see it that way." He sighed. "Everybody gets tense; having a mate relieves that tension."
"By fighting?" He stared at her dumbfounded.
"With Sex."
"Oh," she said turning red.
"Have you never been attracted to anyone?"
"I have," she said. "I'm mostly too angry at everyone to pursue anything."
"Do you find me attractive?"
"You're a weirdo," said Kiru. "I suppose you're my weirdo though. Alright, let's get married."
Saiyan weddings are never grand, unless you are of the royal family. You just go to the village elder and tell him that you're deciding to be mates. Normally a formal event would have some form of wrestling spectacle between the two getting married, to prove to each other how strong they are and will be in the partnership. Most common Saiyans do the wrestling in the bedroom. They actually did do that, as Kiru was curious how strong Auber actually was. Of course, Kiru beat him, and he claimed it was because he let her get strong enough to beat him. She would never know if he was stronger than her at one point.
Eventually it got to a point where Kiru became pregnant. She had dreaded this ever since she agreed to marry Auber. Now she had to be concerned for two lives, not just her own and it was tiring. Since they couldn't tell how strong the child was in the womb, she couldn't train nor fight as hard as she wanted too. She would usually not pay any mind to those restrictions, but Auber constantly reminded her, protecting that unborn child was "for the sake of the Saiyan race." The only plus side to being pregnant was that now she could eat as much as she wanted. She and Auber discussed the means of rearing said child: she didn't want to take part in it, despite the baby needing her milk when it's born. Auber and Kiru reached an agreement that he would watch them for several months, and she would watch the child for several weeks interchangeably. She agreed because it was for the sake of the Saiyan race.
The day came when Kiru gave birth to a small baby girl, who had similar hair to her mother. Kiru got to work draining her breast of milk so she could get back to training. She wasn't even too concerned on what her name would be, which Auber had to remind her of. Auber had decided he would call her Gine. Auber was actually quite happy it was a girl. He admired her mother's strength, and hoped that Gine would inherit that strength. He was fun of for being the main child-rearer, but he didn't mind, he had hope for what Gine would become one day.
One day, when Kiru was watching Gine as an infant, she had gotten a report that Tuffles had laid a successful ambush and Auber was killed in action. Kiru was angry at this.
"You promised me," she growled. "You promised that you would be the one mainly looking after Gine. Now you're abandoning me with her! I never asked for this! You did this to me! How dare you leave me!"
Kiru had no patience for Gine; whenever she cried she would yell at her, which prompted Gine to cry louder. Kiru took it as a challenge, and then scream in her daughters face. This would shut her up for a while, until Gine dared to cry again. Every time after Gine got a little braver, and wouldn't shut up despite her yelling. Kiru was so frustrated she was spending all of her time watching Gine and not enough time on the Battlefield. When Gine was two she was finally allowed back into the fight. That was the same year the war ended. Instead of being happy the Tuffles were finally defeated and the planet was finally theirs, Kiru took her anger of it being over so soon out on Gine. "It was because of you I missed half a year of fighting the Tuffles! All those kills could have been mine!" Kiru didn't even notice when her first word was spoken with fear, "Ma?" She didn't care when Gine had taken her first steps. Gine was something that lived in her home she was tasked with taking care of against her will, she might as well be a small animal; a pet that Auber had left behind.
Now that the war was over, Kiru had to satiate her bloodlust and devote more time to taking care of Gine. She would go out into the wastes and wilds and hunt large game. After satiating herself, she'd bring back a large portion for Gine. At first, she had to mash it up for her, but when Gine could chew, she would just leave the haunch of meat on the floor and let Gine sate herself. She found some time to make some clothes for her daughter so she wasn't stark naked all the time.
When Gine was three, more and more technology was getting integrated into their society. Their mud huts were installed with automatic doors, heating and cooling systems, electricity. Saiyan adults were given one-size-fits all armor. They were introduced to energy cannons, so they no longer had to fight up close. They were given pods for transportation, single pods and spaceships which could carry whole fighting teams. When Kiru heard about the introduction of nursing capsules, she was enraged. If only they were introduced sooner, then she would not have to be saddled with raising her daughter, Gine. She could have spent more time on the battlefield and the pod would have done all the work for her…until she was three years old. She was easier to care for at that age, she could be left alone for long periods of time, and she could feed herself.
It came to a point in time where scouting scopes and power reading machines were introduced. These machines would classify the power one has on a numeral level. Those with higher numbers would be labeled as the Elite, those with lower numbers would be the low class, and those in between the two would be middle class. This would entirely change their society, instead of randomly guessing strength based on feats, a class would be determined for them when they are born based on their innate power and potential. Once the machines were introduced, every Saiyan had to get their power read and their new class determined.
Kiru took Gine to the nearest registry to have their power read. All they had to do was stand in front of the machine, it would read their power and give them their number, and compared to other Saiyans of the age group it would determine their class. Kiru went first, the machine gave her a reading 2880. That was enough to be classified a mid-level Saiyan. They explained that for adults the reading was out of 5000, anyone lower than a thousand would be low class and anyone over five thousand would be an elite. As long as Kiru could fight, that was all she cared for. Then it was Gine's turn. The machine read her power to be 75.
"That's high for her age, right?" asked Kiru.
"It would be quite high…if she was an infant," the attendant said. "Anyone three years or older is rated out of 500."
"Are you serious?!" growled Kiru. To have a low level offspring, the shame it brought her. Kiru grasped at clumps of her hair, and then composed herself. "The king has said any young low levels are to be shipped off to other worlds to regain their place in society."
"That only applies to the new Saiyan infants to be born, those low levels grown in nursing capsules; Gine has already spent some time growing up here, she might not be able to keep her infiltration a secret."
"Then don't tell her," said Kiru.
"Then how will she claim the planet?" Kiru scowled. "We don't know how strong Gine was when she was born; she may have been 75 then as well."
"Doesn't show great potential for further strength, don't you think?"
"Maybe that's because someone isn't raising her up, right? It's your duty to make sure she's strong."
"There was a war going on, and I had to fight in it."
"Then there is a chance Gine might get stronger if you push her." Kiru gave an exasperated sigh.
"I say, analyze her potential for growth. If it's lacking, send her off. I don't need her dragging me down any further."
"That's a complicated test, Kiru. We don't have machines to read that in one go, it might not even be fully accurate when we're done."
"Do it," she sneered.
"Alright, if you insist." The attendant turned to Gine. "I just need a little bit of your blood, little lady." They pulled out a syringe. The sight of the syringe made Gine freeze up in terror.
"Pwese Mama, No!" she begged.
"Do it, Gine," she glared. Gine backed down from the sight of her mother's cold eyes. She shakenly held out her arm. The attendant held her arm steady and stuck her, drawing blood, which made Gine whimper. "Oh toughen up Gine, its over," said Kiru. Gine couldn't help but lick the wound. Kiru was even more humiliated. To think her daughter was afraid of a tiny piece of metal. The attendant told Kiru that once the results were in, she would be the first to know.
Kiru had received a scout scope of her own due her high enough standing. Every day she would read Gine's level, hoping the attendant got it wrong. Every day it was the same, 75. When Kiru used the scope on other Saiyan toddlers, she did read some that were lower than Gine, but most were closer to 100 or over. She had constant doubts for her child. As much as she wanted to see her shipped off, she had to notice that toddlers at a lower level than Gine were staying on Vegeta, so it's not something she could get special treatment for. Whatever…she'll steal a pod and ship her off herself if her potential for change was low.
The results finally arrived. It was sent to her via electronic messaging. On the report it showed what Gine's assumed power level was at birth and the following years to present. Gine at birth: PL 10, At 1 yr: PL 19, at 2 yr: PL 38. The report stated that Gine definitely was a low class Saiyan. The note at the bottom that said that just learning to maneuver on Vegetea allowed her to grow at an acceptable rate. She is not stunted in any way, and continuing to stay on Vegeta will continue her progress of growth. Kiru threw something at the wall. So Gine was weak, but not so weak to be shipped off. Maybe she could try making a case with the King; she had high enough standing so he might listen to her. She could see her daughter peaking from behind a wall, a timid creature, how embarrassing.
"Come here, Gine." Gine hesitantly approached her mother. Her mother looked down at her. "Apparently, you have potential to be a warrior one day. To do that, you need to stop being so afraid. You need to take action, and stand up for yourself. When they try to knock you down, you better get back up again, you hear me?"
Gine was not sure if her mother was threatening her or advising her, so she just simply nodded.
"I asked you a question Gine, did you hear me?!"
"Yes, I heard you."
"What will you do?!"
"Get back up again!"
"And if you're scared?"
"Uh…"
"If you're scared!?"
"Toughen up!"
"Good," said Kiru. "You may go." Gine scampered off to where she slept. Kiru was deep in thought. Maybe Gine would get stronger if Kiru trained her; of course she refused to fight a child. She decided that was a good time as any to teach Gine how to get her own food.
She started bringing Gine out on hunts. She taught her how to take down large beasts, how to use her nose, and how to trap small beasts. This was great, now she didn't have to bring Gine food anymore. She focused her efforts on training, pouring herself into becoming stronger. To be strong where Gine wasn't; she believed Gine only needed time. Soon after, the king had arranged fighting squadrons to be dispatched to certain planets. The goal was to wipe out the inhabitants or force them to surrender themselves so the planet could be sold off to another race. Before Kiru left for her first mission, she left Gine a large haunch of meat and told her not to die while she was gone.
The mission was a success, and she actually grew camaraderie with her crewmates. She then returned home, and Gine was waiting for her. She was happy to see her return.
"What did you need me when I was gone?" she asked.
"No," said Gine.
"Then I don't know why you're happy I'm back."
"You could've died," said Gine. Kiru glared at her.
"Do you really think I'm that weak?"
"No," said Gine. Kiru didn't know what to think of this. The conversation ended there.
As the missions continued, they started to get longer. Gine was having more time to hunt on her own. Of course, the scouting scope didn't show any improvement from her hunting.
"I hear your kid isn't getting much stronger," said a teammate of hers one day on a mission.
"What of it?" said Kiru. "She has a good enough potential for change."
"Oh yeah, well that might just be your kid growing up. Once the rapid development stops, they stop getting stronger."
"What about all that extra training?" said another teammate. "She might become a warrior one day if she is just pushed hard enough."
"Not everyone becomes a warrior," said the first teammate.
"What do you mean?" said Kiru.
"The low class has their own ranking system. I hear only the strongest of the low class get to head into battle. Those with softer hearts and weaker power stay behind as the maintenance team and kitchen staff."
"I thought the intelligent caste dealt with maintenance," said Kiru.
"No, they're just the doctor-scientists. Apparently it doesn't take a genius to know how to work a ship."
"So, my daughter will just be stuck in menial labor?"
"Kiru, if she doesn't get any stronger she'll probably just die if they send her out there. They're not going to lose unnecessary numbers." Kiru groaned. The problem was her daughter didn't have the drive to get stronger, she was too nice!
Every time she had come home from a mission, Gine was there to greet her. She'd smile, and say, "Welcome back, Mama!" This time when Kiru returned, Gine had food prepared, and was making more, roasting it on a stick…like the cook she was destined to be.
"Welcome home, Mama! I hope you're hungry! I made you some food!"
"How dare you," said Kiru quietly. Gine was confused.
"HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME FOOD! YOU SOFT-HEARTED WEAKLING! IF YOU WERE STRONGER YOU WOULD FIGHT ME TO SEE IF I HAD GOTTEN STRONGER, TO PROVE YOUR OWN WORTH! NO, YOU'RE MAKING ME FOOD! YOU EXPECT ME TO ALWAYS BE ABOVE YOU; WELL I ALWAYS WILL BE IF YOU DON'T STOP CARING FOR ME!"
Gine was so startled; she dropped the meat she was roasting in the flames.
"You should have eaten all of this yourself and then gone back to training like a good Saiyan child, but no, you're too busy making it all for me. Well guess what, I don't want any of it!"
Gine started to tear up at her mother's anger. "Oh, now you're crying. That proves how weak you are. A stronger child would never let this get to them, they'd get stronger. But no, you're crying. How did I come to have a daughter like you?" Gine fled from her mother, hiding her crying face. "Go ahead, run away like the weakling you are. You better not be crying when I see you again, you better be able to stand up to me!" Kiru kicked the meat out of the flames so the burning smell wouldn't irritate her nose. She then sat down, frustrated. She knew Gine was not cut out to be a warrior, she'd probably become a cook one day, for the other Saiyans returning home. It was honest work, a menial task, but honest, it needed to be done by somebody. She had to drive to fight or train, but a great potential for change. Gine needed to be pushed harder if she was going to survive in what Saiyan society had now became. Kiru though, was done seeing her fail to become the warrior she hoped Gine would become.
Kiru did the only thing she could do for Gine, she abandoned her. She never came back home; after one mission was done, she just went on another. Gine was not getting any stronger because she was depending on Kiru to be in her life. If Gine had to survive on her own, she may push herself in order to survive. So when Gine was four years old, Gine was left all alone.
Timeline: Auber died: Gine age 1, War ended: Gine age 2, technology and power levels introduced: Gine age 3, Gine abandoned: Gine age 4.
I decided to name Gine's father Auber off of Aubergine (Eggplant), they say Gine comes from "Negi", but some say it also comes from Aubergine. A little nod to say that Gine is more like her father.
Also, on Marriage. Masakox said plenty of times that don't get married, they have mates. Technically, Toriyama said Saiyans do get married, and have husbands and wives (Bardock and Trunks called Gine his wife in Xenoverse). However, Royals definetely get married to secure heirs, and Saiyans technically only get married for reproductive purposes. Bardock and Gine got married because they loved each other and that was weird. Kiru and Auber don't technically have a lovey dovey relationship, more akin to friends who married out of convenience.
Also, power levels. Masakox keeps going back to "Bardock has a power level of 10000," which doesn't make sense. Nappa had a power level of 6000 and was an elite. Toriyama said 10000 was the power level of King Vegeta the third, so Bardock would have been an elite. In the Broly movie, Bardock was strong for a low class but not 10000. Since Raditz was 1200 and was working with the prince, I'd like to think that anyone under 1000 was low class and Bardock was probably 999 or something.
The next chapter will be Gine joining the scavengers and meeting Bardock. Stay tuned!
