BRITTANY POV
It's been the same dream every night for months now. I can't ever see her face, but I know her. Like I've known her all my life. and it feels like something terrible is gonna happen when I reach her…
But at the same time, I'm not scared at all. I want her...
No matter what happens. But I never get to her. I can almost grab her hands this time. But when I get really close to her, I hear gunshot and see myself drenched in my own blood, bleeding to death.
I always jolt awake whenever I hear the fuckin gunshots.
At first I was scared I was losing my mind. Until I realized that would be no great loss. I start junior year tomorrow, so insanity's normal.
What's worse is waking up every night. Wanting someone I've never met, Loving a girl who doesn't exist. I've been stuck my whole life in Lima, Ohio's least-famous middle-of-nowhere.
By the time we get a movie, it's already on DVD. And the theater always gets the titles wrong. We're too far away to have a Starbucks. We only have Lima Bean How sick is that? We have 12 churches and one library. With more banned books, than books to read.
Same damn families have lived here for generations. They keep reenacting the Civil War like it's gonna turn out different. Mom used to say there's only two kinds of people in Lima: The ones too stupid to leave and the ones too stuck to move.
Dad can't leave his room since she died. People said it was God's will.
I think it's the only way people ever get out of here. I can understand why young people signed up for the Civil War. Anything is better than a life standing still. But I think even the dead stay in Lima.
Sometimes, it sounds crazy, but sometimes I imagine I'm one of them. Fighting for the cause on Mckinly Hill…
She suddenly remembers that voice that calls for her desperately
"Brittany!" The voice cries…
"BRITTANY!"
I imagine all kinds of things lately. Sometimes, I'm Billy Pilgrim from Vonnegut's banned book Slaughterhouse-Five.
"To be unstuck in time, in a constant state of stage fright. never knowing what part of my life I'd have to act in next." She says amusedly while reading the book.
"I just love the sound of that" she thought to herself
"Dad?" She calls on to Brett, her father
"Dad?" she summons louder
"I got breakfast!" She shouts so her dad can hear her.
"Ugh. Is this what we're wearing our first day of school?" Amma (Mercedes) questions
"I'm a junior now, Amma" she defended "If I dress like I care, I'd lose credibility" she says smugly
"I thought you were getting a haircut?" Mercedes says trying to fix Brittany's hair
"Who said that?" Brittany says ignoring Mercedes and fixing her own hair carelessly.
"I did. Anyway, Pay attention to the days marked on these containers" Amma Instructed.
"Thanks, Amma"
"You decide what colleges you applying to?"
"All of them, as long as they're a thousand miles away from here!" Brittany says excitedly
Mercedes smiles at her proudly "Amen to that"
"Did you go running last night?"
"Yeah"
"Help you sleep any?" Amma asks
"I envy people in comas" Brittany jokes
"Your father come out at all?"
"No" she said sadly…
"Lying lips are abomination to the Lord. Now, when a wicked man dies, his expectation shall perish. And the hope of unjust men perisheth" Judy Fabray says reading the bible in front of Quinn. Seeing her daughter not paying attention. She smacked her with a stick.
"Ow" Quinn muttered when she was slightly hit by her mom by being distracted.
"Fine, you get away now. Go on" Judy says scooting Brittany away.
"But Mrs. Fabray, I got to take her to school. It's our First Day today!"
"We have to finish these…"
Before Judy could even finish the sentence, Quinn is already getting her bag.
"Quinn, where are you going without kissing your mother? What is wrong with you, eh? Now, you be good" Her mother reminded kissing her forehead
"So, is she a good kisser or what?" Brittany teased when Quinn got inside her car.
"Shut up!" Quinn groaned and rolls her eyes. "My mother has officially flown that extra bat-shit crazy since Dad filed that Divorce. She thinks the end of the world's coming because all these earthquakes in the news. It's like, how does loving Jesus make that woman so crazy?"
They both laughed at that.
"She damned Daddy to hell so many times, I bet he drank just so he'd get there quicker" Quinn says
"My dad is acting like old man Schuester. They're all bat-shit"
"Hey, did you hear that new girl in our class is a Schuester?"
"I thought old man Schuester lived in that house all alone"
"It's his niece from out of town. She moved here"
Brittany was amused, no one would want to move in McKinley. "Why would anyone move here?" Brittany asked intrigued
"I don't know, It'll be the first Schuester anybody in Lima has seen in almost 20 years"
They drove to school talking about their summer trips and parties.
"How was your summer, sugar?" Bree asked Brittany who is actually annoyed. She has been ignoring Bree all summer, obviously not wanting to be with her anymore.
But she still smiled and answered "Fine, Bree. And yours?"
"Wonderful. Why didn't you go to the Labors Day Carnival? It was such a good time"
"I wasn't up for it" Brittany shrugged
"I don't understand what happened to us Britt.."
"I know you don't" Brittany paused and took a deep breathe. "I'm sorry"
"You said to give you the summer, and I did. I didn't hear from you once" Bree took Brittany's hand and kissing it and put it in her knees, which her skirt has ridden up "But I was a good girl…"
"I didn't call. But I missed you Britt" She whispered sexily in Brittany's ear
Brittany sighed this is not what she wanted "Hey, no big deal promise I'll make it up to you, right?"
"How's about you and I go see a movie or something? Just us" Bree suggests
But before Brittany could've answer, the bell rang. Someone caught her eyes, she saw new girl enter… There's something with her, Brittany can feel it. But she can't see her whole face not when she quickly sat 2 rows in front of her.
Everyone, take your seats.
"Brittany, baby, I wish you'd quit reading those kinds of books. They're bad for your mind" Bree says trying to get Brittany's attention. She traced where Brittany is subtly looking, and saw the new girl. Then she looks at Kitty curiously.
As a requirement of this course. You will need to select a topic for a term paper… based on materials covered in chapters 12 through 24.
Is that her? Kitty asks Bree loudly
"Must be. What is she wearing?" Bree says
"She looks like death eating a cracker." Kitty said haughtily
"Mama says nobody's seen old man Schuester leave that creepy house in years" Bree says
"Mama says he's a devil worshiper"
"Actually, it's Lopez" Santana interjected looking behind at the two girls.
"Well, uh, now, that's an out-and-out lie" Bree says
"I happen to know for a fact that you're William Schuester's niece"
"Well, bless your heart, sugar. You must have been first in your litter" Santana says smugly
"OOOOOHHHHHHH" their classmates' snickers
"Mama says devil worshipers hate fresh air. Makes them choke"
"Well, we all know what makes you choke!" Quinn says to Kitty winking
The students laugh at that even Brittany couldn't hold her laugh
"That's enough, Ms. Fabray"
