Chapter 3: The sorting

Elowyn POV:

Elowyn took a deep breath. She had just finished her long rant about the houses. She still was a little shocked that Harry Potter was the one receiving it. She had after all grown up with many stories about the hero of the light, who killed he-who-must-not-be-named. She had thought of treating him like her cousin Susan. They were both orphaned by the war and were raised by their aunt. But Elowyn wasn't an idiot. She knew, that the dark and light was playing chess and Harry Potter was one of the most important ponds. Both sides were willing to sacrifice him to checkmate the other. Therefor Harry wasn't Susan. No-one expected Susan to defeat the dark lord if he came back. Harry would be expected to do so. Then Elowyn looked him into the eyes she thought, "I'm not going to let them." She wouldn't let her cousin be manipulated to die for either side, so she wouldn't let Harry either. There was a reason the Bones went to Hufflepuff, they were loyal to their very core. Harry had just gained the loyalty.

"You said muggleborns were rare in Slytherin, what is a muggleborn?" Harry asked. That cemented it for Elowyn, he knew next to nothing.

"The Wizarding World is divided in three. Muggleborns, those with muggle parents. Half-bloods, those with a muggle and magical parent, a muggleborn and half-blood or pureblood parent, two half-blood parents or a half-blood and a pureblood parents. Pureblood is those from a long line of wizards and witches. They only marry purebloods to keep the lines pure. The purebloods are more powerful and influential since they have seats in the Wizengamot and a long inheritance. They own most of the magical world. Some view purebloods as superior due to their heritage. They are called blood-supremicists. Half-bloods can have seats in the Wizengamot. They can hold influence and are accepted into society more. Muggleborns are not accepted in to the Wizarding World that easily. The dark side says, it because they don't learn our traditions and replace our culture. The light side say it's because the dark side is bigoted. Some even leave our world and go back to the muggles. You are a half-blood since your dad was a pureblood and your mom a muggleborn. The Potters have seats at the Wizengamot, I don't know if someone is using them. I can ask my mom, if you would like?" she explained.

"What is the Wizengamot?"

"The Wizengamot is where laws get proposed and passed. It's a parliament. They also vote on the most important trials. The most important families were given seats in the Wizengamot, the number of seats varied on how influential the family were. It's the lords and ladys of the family that use the seats. Seats can be given to other family. If a family is poor they either sell their seats or accept bribery. So it is biased. The heir or heiress is the one next in line to get the seats. You are heir Potter, though you might be able to become lord in a couple of years. The Winzengamot is divided in three parties The Basilisks, The Demiguises and The Phoenixes. The Basilisks consist of the darker families, Lucius Malfoy is the current leader. Basilisks were created by Herpo the Foul, a dark wizard. If you look a Basilisks in the eye you die, so they chose the name to intimidate others. Because of this the light party chose the Phoenix since it can look a Basilisk in the eyes. A phoenix is a light creature, it's gentle. The song of a Phoenix fills a light wizard with courage and a dark with fear. Professor Dumbledore is their leader. The Demiguises are the neutral party. A demiguise is peaceful. They can make themself invisible and tell the future, like the neutral party makes themself mostly invisible in conflict. The ability to see is also mostly found in neutral families. A demiguise only bite if provoked. My mom Amelia Bones is their leader." She admitted. "The Wizengamot has a chief warlock, who starts the meetings, holds the votes and leads the proceedings. Currently professor Dumbledore is Chief warlock, which means the Phoenixes have the most power. There is a Court Scribe so you can read all the meetings, if you so desire. There are books, that covers the most important. The minister gets to oversee the Wizengamot but can't vote."

Harry nodded at her. It looked like he was going to ask something, but the door opened. Elowyn's eyes met Draco Malfoy's. They had met a numerous occasions being the children of party-leaders. The Malfoy heir could be a handful, he was very proud and sometimes arrogant. Elowyn found him rather clever and insightful, but then around other Basilisk children he was a bit of a bully. He was as usual flanked by Crabbe and Goyle.

"Greetings Heiress Bones."

"Well met Heir Malfoy, Heir Crabbe and Heir Goyle." Elowyn responded with perfect etiquette. She wouldn't want to discredit her family. "How are you faring?"

"I am faring very well, heiress Bones. I couldn't help but notice you absence in the other compartments. I would have thought you would be keeping you cousin, the Greengrass heiress or the Patil twins company," Draco stated. Of course people were wondering why she wasn't there. She had not been planning on joining the compartment that long. She was only going to spend a hour in silence but she had forgotten her plans of returning.

"Don't be afraid, I have been in good company," Elowyn said. She tried to be mysterious. she didn't want to reveal Harry just yet. Malfoy took a look around until his eyes met Harry's.

"We have met before, haven't we? In... Madame Malkin's." Draco Malfoy asked. That surprised her. What would Harry think of Malfoy. It would depend on his mood.

"Yes, I recall. Greetings Heir Malfoy," Harry greeted. Malfoy looked lost. His curiosity finally won.

"I can't recall receiving your name. What would it be?" Malfoy offered his hand. Harry took it and shook it while saying; "My mistake. Harry Potter, pleasure to meet you." Malfoy's jaw dropped.

"Sorry heiress Bones for doubting your company. How did you make acquaintances with heir Potter?"

"Where is no fun in telling you so," she simply answered.

"We unfortunately have to get back to our compartment." He looked rather sad. The three left.

"What did you make of him?" Elowyn asked.

"He was certainly nicer than first time I met him. And far less arrogant. You seem familiar."

"We have met countless times at ministry functions. It's getting dark, so we will be at the castle soon. I will go to the restrooms to change to school uniform." She walked out. While changing she decided to warn him. So after changing she went back and gathered her belongings. The train stopped.

"Before we go out. Don't look professor Dumbledore or professor Snape in the eyes. They are known for being legilimens, meaning they can delve into people minds. However they need eye contact. So avoid it. It can be countered by Oclumency, however you don't have time to learn."

"Thanks. I guess you don't normally use people first name?"

"Yes, you only use a friends first name with their permission."

"I use yours?"

"You introduced yourself as Harry. I thought it would be rude to make you call me Bones. I do give yiu permission to call me Elowyn."

"And you can call me Harry." Elowyn took his hand and lead him out.

A tall man, she guessed as Hagrid, started gathering first years.

Dumbledore POV:

Albus Dumbledore was nervous. He had just received the letter from young Ronald Weasley. He had been unable to find Harry Potter on the train. That meant he hadn't been introduced to him yet. It also meant that he had no clue who had sat with him or if he got on. With those relatives the later was likely. He wouldn't think of that. Ronald must have missed him. So then the hall filled with students he prepared himself to see Harry walk in.

He saw them now. The first years walked in. He scanned them looking for Harry. He finally found him walking next to Elowyn and Susan Bones, Daphne Greengrass, Blaise Zabini, the MacMillan boy, and the Nott heir. Not the ideal crowd. The Bones were to impartial, they wouldn't push him in the right direction. Maybe the younger had taken after her parents, that would be desirable. Zabini, Greengrass and Nott were evil. Probably wannabe death eaters. He could feel it, they would probably take after their parents. If Harry had talked to them he would need Ronald to guide him away from their bad influence. The first years lined up. He couldn't wait for the boy to take his place among the lions and get away from the snakes.

The first names were called. He couldn't care less. Then "Elowyn Bones" were called. "Hufflepuff." The bagders clapped. Then finally the big moment. "Harry Potter" was called. The small boy with the unruly hair walked up. He still had those avada-kadavra green eyes like his mom. The hall erupted in whispers. The hat was placed on his head. It didn't instantly yell Gryffindor like aspected. The minutes went by. Lily had taken a long time to because of her smarts. It was likely the same case. Suddenly the hat yells "Slytherin."

The hall is silenced. He can't believe it. The savor, the boy that must defeat Tom, was going to Slytherin. He was in that sneaky evil house. How could it be. Zabini, Greengrass and Nott must have poisoned the savior somehow. There was no way. The young Malfoy started clapping. The rest of Slytherin followed. Harry Potter then sat down next to Draco Malfoy.

But then the thought crept in. The horcrux. It must be it's fault. Tom's living hocrux belonged in Slytherin. It made sense. He would have to watch him. He couldn't allow Harry to take Tom's path. He would make sure of it. Malfoy started clapping and the rest of Slyherin followed.
