We open with Sonic and Tails sitting on Tails's couch, flicking through TV channels. Each channel was on for barely a second before Sonic would mash the channel down button. If something did catch his attention, it would last a whole three seconds before he continued on the search.
"Boring, boring, boring," Sonic stated with each click.
At that moment, Amy entered the house. "Hey, guys, there's a new attraction coming to town. Wanna come see it with me?"
Both Tails and Sonic looked over at her as Sonic kept hitting the same button on the remote. When the words sunk in, his finger paused. Sonic tilted his head, "That feels outta the blue, pun ... sorta intended."
"You two aren't the only ones who get bored around here," Amy deadpanned. "When there's no action, things are boring after a whole five minutes!" Her eyes scanned the room, then she quickly perked back up. "Where's Joe?"
Tails answered, "Knuckles decided to take him fishing as a reward for how well Joe was doing with his workouts."
Knuckles and Joe sat in a boat in the middle of a lake as Knuckles hooked a bug zapper up to a car battery.
"Uh, Coach? This doesn't seem like a good idea," Joe pointed out carefully.
"Hey, if you love fish like I do, then you want them to die with dignity," Knuckles said as he smiled.
He lowered the bug zapper into the water, causing electricity to ripple all throughout the lake.
Joe was about to suggest they fish the normal way when dozens of dead fish floated to the surface.
"I think I have a nibble," the echidna sang. He grabbed a nearby fish but got electrocuted the moment he touched it. "GABLDUEJUF!" When the shock ebbed, he began munching on the fish, electrocuting him further. "TUSOBWVCR!"
Joe could only look on wordlessly at the display.
"He said they'd be back by next episode." The fox finished.
Sonic set the remote down and shrugged, "Well, there's nothing on TV, so I guess we might as well."
The trio arrived at the town center where a stage had been constructed and took their seats.
"So, when's this thing supposed to start up?" Sonic asked.
Amy pointed a finger at a nearby speaker, which an unseen announcer spoke up through. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Edward Johnson."
The blue hedgehog nodded, "Okay, that answers that."
After no clapping and limited whispers, the star made his debut. He was a gray housecat wearing a green sweater and a white, fingerless glove on his right hand. "Hello, everyone," he greeted. He then pointed to a random member of the audience, "You there, Lady Walrus. I'm sensing you've recently lost some weight."
"He's right!" Lady Walrus smiled.
After a few seconds of scattered, mildly confused applause, Johnson scanned the crowd before finally settling on Tails. Johnson adopted the standard psychic stance of putting his index and middle finger against his temple, "I'm sensing you're an inventor, and that the last thing you invented was a small robo-snake for examining topography."
Tails's eyes widened, "That is the last thing I invented!"
As the audience applauded clearly more excited now. Tails bounced, catching wind of the growing fascination, but Amy's eyes narrowed, "Something about this feels off. Don't you think so, Sonic?"
"This guy is crazy good!" Sonic complimented.
Johnson's next participant was Og the Frog, "You there, bizarre frog creature-" Johnson took his stance again and closed his eyes. After a few seconds, he came up with something, "You got outcast by your people before you befriended Team Sonic."
Og nodded, "Yep, pretty much."
Next was Leroy the Turtle. "You forgot to feed your cat last night and it scratched you."
"Correct," Leroy admitted.
Eventually, the show ended, and Amy talked things with her friends. "I think that Edward Johnson is a fraud," Amy stated.
Sonic and Tails were surprised at her accusation, especially with what they'd all just witnessed. Tails shook his head and crossed his arms as if that was ridiculous. Sonic turned to face her, trying to better understand.
"What are you talking about? All his predictions were accurate," Sonic pointed out.
"His 'predictions' weren't predictions at all." Amy crossed her arms and tapped her foot. "The thing he said to that lady was just flattery, and Tails, you have a blog where you mention new inventions. He was just stating facts about people that he could have learned from anyone else."
Sonic just shrugged her points off, figuring she was just being a skeptic. "Come on, Amy. Everyone thinks they can write off psychic powers, but they can never get anything rock solid to disprove it."
"Then I'll prove that I can disprove him." Amy made to leave while beckoning, "Come on, Tails."
Said fox awkwardly rubbed the back of his head, "Actually, I'm with Sonic on this one."
Amy balked at that statement. "What? But you're the science guy. You of all people should-Ugh, never mind. I'll do it myself."
"Hmm." Sitting in her house, Amy pondered how to disprove the new psychic. Suddenly, an idea came to her. It was so obvious, she should have thought about it sooner. "That's it! I can ask around and see if anyone if they know anything. Come along, Bea."
As the hedgehog and Bee bot made their way out of the village, they ended up passing by her friends. "I'm going on a journey. See you guys later."
"Later," they all waved.
Amy unfolded her map, "Let's see." And so, they set off. "We have plenty of places to check, but I know where we should start."
The first part of her journey saw her and her pet trekking through the desert. As Amy wiped some sweat off her forehead, she paused when she noticed Bea buzzing and beeping. "Okay, I'm holding still. Now what?"
Bea didn't respond and instead fired a shot from her stinger, grazing Amy's shoulder.
The pink hedgehog was stunned. After the shock wore off, she was angry. "Why would you-!" Noticing Bea was glancing behind her, she turned around to see a dead scorpion, fried by the energy shot. Turning back to her pet she asked, "Why didn't you say something!?" After a few buzzes, Amy calmed down. "You're right. I would have freaked out."
Next, they found themselves wondering through the jungle. Their progress was halted when they came to a river. "Hmm, what to do. Maybe I could swing across on a vine?" Amy thought aloud with a hand on her chin. She shook her head, "No, that'd just be stealing Sticks's thing. I should do this my own way." Looking around, she spotted a high enough tree. Pulling out her hammer, she swung and knocked it over, forming a bridge over the river with minimal effort and one sure blow.
After that, she had to push her way through the snowy mountains where she made a snowman. She paused partway through that activity, though. "Wait, what am I doing? I'm on a mission."
Eventually, she and Bea reached their destination before the day was out. "We made good time. Now to investigate," Amy commented, with Bea nodding.
Looking around, she saw a sign saying, "Bygone Village." Deciding to get down to business, she approached the first person she saw, a female chipmunk wearing a blue vest and black shorts.
"I don't think I've seen you before. Are you from out of town?" the chipmunk asked as she took note of Amy. When Amy nodded, the chipmunk just shrugged and smiled. "Well, I could show you around if you wanted."
"I appreciate the offer, but I'm here on a mission. We can world build later," Amy politely declined. "Did a psychic by the name 'Edward Johnson' pass through here at any point?"
The chipmunk nodded. "He did. He had a few shows and then went on his way. I didn't see any of them, though."
Amy pulled out a notepad. "Can you point me to anyone who did?"
And so, Amy was led around the village, getting people's opinions.
"Oh, yeah, that guy was amazing," a beaver man said excitedly. "He knew what year I when I was born and that my favorite color was alabaster!"
Amy's next interviewee was a bear and her child. "Mr. Johnson's predictions were completely accurate. He knew everything my boy got for his last birthday."
Nodding, Amy moved onto a platypus who'd seen Johnson's showing. This man, however, had something different to say. "Eh, when I raised my hand for a reading, he didn't give me one. Said I had a 'guarded aura' that he couldn't get anything from."
"I see," Amy said, noting down his input. "Hmm, I have a theory. Let's head back, Bea."
And so, they began their trip back home, plodding through snow, crossing river, and hiking through the desert.
Amy sighed in relief upon reaching home, "Ah, that was much easier on the way back. Helps that we condensed the trip to a single sentence. Anyway, back to business." She immediately went online, which confirmed her suspicions. "I knew it. I knew I was right."
"Tails? Would it be alright if I borrow a gadget of yours?" Amy asked, letting herself into her friend's workshop.
"That depends, what do you have in mind?" Tails asked.
Amy took a quick second to describe what she wanted. "Something where, if someone were getting a message on a communicator, I'd be able to let other people hear it."
Tails frowned, "That sounds like a wiretap, which would be unethical."
"Can you help me or not?" Amy asked impatiently.
"Sure." Tails lifted her wrist and used a screwdriver on his friend's own communicator. "Okay, you're all set."
With all the talk about Edward Johnson, it wasn't very hard to find him. He had set up a booth on the same street with various stores and was charging small fees for readings. Sure, it all seemed innocent, but Amy knew better. He was getting plenty out of this and she was sure she was right. Now she had the chance to prove it.
"You sure about this, Amy? I still think he seems legit," Sonic stated.
"I'm positive that man is a phony, and I'm not going to let him keep going around conning people," Amy said firmly.
"You want one of these?" Sticks asked, holding out a tin foil hat.
Amy shook her head. "Thank you, Sticks, but I'll be doing this my way." She approached the booth and announced, "Mr. Johnson, I don't believe you're really psychic!"
All the onlookers muttered amongst themselves at Amy's declaration. Amy couldn't tell if they were considering what she said or whispering about her being crazy or wrong like Sonic and Tails had.
Johnson didn't look bothered, "Yet another skeptic, I see. Very well. How about I prove you wrong? Would you like that, everyone?" The crowd cheered in response. "Come now, we can't disappoint them."
"Alright, if you can make three accurate readings about me, I'll drop this here and now," Amy proposed.
"I'll take that bet," Johnson said, standing up from his booth. Raising his gloved hand to his temple while pointing his other hand at the hedgehog. He closed his eyes in focus for a few seconds before giving his first reading, "One of your hobbies is painting."
Amy said nothing but nodded in confirmation.
"Hmm, sometimes you feel like you're the only sane member of the team," Johnson followed up.
"One more," Amy said, holding her hands behind her back almost innocently.
"She's a skilled Fuzzy Puppy player."
The sound of strange new voice, caused everyone to look around, searching for the source. A few people murmured, but Johnson just squeezed his eyes closed like he was pretending it didn't happen.
Amy walked up to Johnson, grabbed his right wrist, and pulled his glove off. Folding the glove inside-out, she revealed a small speaker inside. "Just as I thought, you're not really making psychic readings, you're just having someone feed you information."
The crowd gasped.
"Your partner in crime would have to be close enough to see whoever you talk to to know what to tell you about," Amy added. "Sonic, could you take a look around?"
Sonic vanished in a blue blur and zipped around the immediate area before returning with someone in tow - a rat in his late teens holding a tablet looking more than a little uncomfortable with being caught.
Snatching up the tablet, Amy flipped through it and confirmed another of her suspicions, "Look here. He was looking through my social media for information. And whenever they met someone without a profile, they just said they had a 'guarded aura.'"
The crowd gasped again before glaring at Johnson. The green cat chuckled nervously, "Uh, no refunds!" He immediately ran off with the crowd hot on his heels. "It's show biz! Give me a break!"
Sonic whistled, "Wow, nice detective work, Ames. Does this mean all psychics are fake?"
The pink hedgehog nodded with a smile, "That's a strong possibility, yes."
200 years in the future
A silver hedgehog with yellow eyes suddenly sneezed. He looked around for whatever triggered his reaction but saw nothing, so he just shrugged.
