Chapter 5
Maurice Owens, the leader of the Large Green Other special forces, devised a plan to free the two incarcerated Large Green Other scientists from the Hero compound. Maurice personally trained the special military team, which had the latest suit deactivation rods, acquired just before the Heroes raided the Numiko Corporation.
How did the Heroes learn about Numiko and the underground circuit board production lines? It was top secret even within the green alien community where the boards were produced. He was tasked with rescuing the two captured scientists before they talked about any of the Large Green Other projects. If they couldn't release them, they were to destroy the building they were held in and kill the scientists.
Herman accidentally discovered that the outer fenced perimeter was not well monitored. The Hero security section assumed that if anyone tried to enter, they would be detected cutting the fence. The old Green Corporation security system motion sensors and laser monitors inside the fenced zone remained in place after the Heroes took over.
The systems were not monitored regularly. When a monitor was activated, it was always an animal. The Hero Security department had become lazy and no longer paid attention to the detectors in that area. They would assign some rooky young security guard to audit the zone, but they became laid back after a while.
Maurice Owens had been in charge of security for the supreme commander at the Green research facility, now the Hero compound. He set up the motion sensors and laser beam detectors and remembered all the codes for them. The Heroes assembled fences around the property's perimeter, but nothing else was changed or updated.
Maurice thought, 'Stupid humans never considered that they would attempt to invade the facility.'
A week had passed since Herman was caught spying on the Hero compound. He was hiking along the perimeter of the outer fence to pick up the equipment he left when he was captured investigating. He paid a lot for the equipment and didn't want to leave it in the elements. He informed Ralph where he was going and that it would take him a couple of hours to get there and back.
Ralph offered to fly him to the spot after school, but the assistant teacher declined the offer, "No, I need a hike."
He took off, reached the location, and started packing everything in the carrying cases. The telescope and binoculars were still sitting where he left them. He picked up the binoculars, dusted them off, and searched around to test them. A few miles down the fence, he recognized a group in black suits similar to the Hero red suits. He learned from the training videos that these were the Large Green Others. What were the devices they were holding? Were they trying to get through the barrier? Were they preparing to invade the compound? He had to warn the heroes.
He started jumping up and down, waving his hands and pointing toward the Large Green Other invasion force, hoping a Hero would see him. Nothing happened. He threw rocks over the fence to activate the motion sensors and laser detectors. He kept this up and jumped, waved, and pointed. Still, there was no reaction. He had to get through the barrier.
He followed the fence and hoped to see an area to slide under the chain link. At last, he found a small boulder he could move. He rolled it away from the fence and discovered a low spot he could shimmy under. On the other side, he ran down the hill, knowing he was activating every motion detector in the zone.
Jimmy Gates was at the outer perimeter motion detection station. Half asleep, he was startled when the alarm went wild. He had never experienced this before. He checked the location and moved the video camera in that direction. A man was running down the hill, waving his arms. He telepathically alerted his supervisor, Sherman Douglas, and reported the incident. The supervisor looked at the video monitor, not believing what he saw. He called two guards to pick up the crazed man.
The security guards landed beside Herman. Panting heavily, he pointed to the area where the aliens were and tried to explain about the invasion but was having such a hard time breathing that he couldn't say the words out. They didn't listen to him, placed a bag over his head, and carried him to the security office. Finally, Herman caught his breath and started yelling, "Large Green Others are coming through the fence about two miles away."
Sherman said, "The only thing we saw coming through the fence was you."
"Check the motion sensors in that zone. Aren't they being tripped?" Herman exclaimed.
The young security guard at that station said, "There are no alarms in the area you indicated. The only activated monitors we got were from you."
The supervisor asked, "What is your name?"
"Herman Polanski, I work here for Ralph Hinkley at the school. Here, read my tag." And he held out his right arm.
The supervisor placed the ID tag reader over Herman's arm and read the information listed on the computer monitor. "He is who he says. What were you doing out there?"
"I was collecting my equipment on the other side of the fence and saw the Large Green Others preparing to come over the perimeter fence. That was when I figured I should let you know ASAP, so I found a hole I could crawl under and ran down the hill. You guys better do something about the raid headed this way."
The security team huddled and whispered. Herman shook his head and paced, not believing that what they called a security department was doing nothing.
He yelled, "Call the First. He can vouch for me."
The supervisor nodded to one of the other guards, who hesitantly pulled out his phone from behind his cape and made the call, not wanting to disturb the First. Within a few seconds, Ralph showed up.
"What is going on here?" he asked as he hurried through the door.
In a rush, Herman explained to Ralph what he had detected and said that the security personnel hadn't done anything about it. Ralph turned to the department supervisor, "You better check on this. I have a bad feeling about it. I'm calling Eric now."
He telepathically contacted the Hero League Director, who entered the office within a few moments. Sherman telepathically called for a security team to head for the indicated area.
Herman informed Eric of what he observed. Even though there had been no alarms from that zone, he knew Large Green Others in black super suits were coming through the fence. Eric told the security supervisor to report immediately what he found.
