The Spider-men finally unite and the other half of our title has come true.
Chapter 9
Peter-2, 3, and 4 are waiting on the tower of Midtown School of Science and Technology. They see that Ned and MJ found Peter-1 on the rooftop and are hugging and comforting the young man in his time of need. MJ then tells him something that they can't hear and Peter-1 then stands up and looks up at the three Spider-Men, who make their way down to him.
"Hey, wait, wait! Whoa! What…?" Peter-1 exclaimed, surprised by the three, who put their hands up in a surrender pose, to show that they're not a danger to him.
"Sorry…about May," Peter-2 says in condolence.
"Yeah, sorry. I got some understanding of what you're-" Said Peter-3 before being interrupted.
"No-no, please don't tell me that you know what I'm going through, okay? She's gone…and it's all my fault. She died for nothing. So, I'm gonna do what I should have done in the first place." Peter-1 says, a little angry. He reaches for the Macchinda di Kadavus.
"Peter-" Peter-2 asks.
"Please don't-you don't belong here, none of you. So I'm sending you home. Caitlin and those others are from your worlds, right? So you deal with it. If they die, if you kill them…that's on you. It's not my problem, I don't care anymore, I'm done. I'm really sorry that I dragged you into this, but you have to go home now. Good luck." He says before reaching for the cube again, but MJ holds it away from him.
"Kid, I'm sorry about Aunt May, really. I know I'd hate to lose mine. But, out of the four of us, I've been to several universes in the multiverse before today and have encountered several of our doppelgängers and others who became Spider-Men, women, etc. And a lot of us have some things in common. We lose our parents as kids, we get bitten, and then we lose Uncle Ben. Me? I've lost a lot of friends I considered brothers to this war." Peter-4 said with both bluntness and sympathy, but sadness at the reminder of losing Ronnie and Oliver.
"War?"
"A friend of mine, not one of the ones I lost, called our fight against crime and evil a war. Another called it the neverending battle. I know you blame yourself, I myself wish I could have done more to save Uncle Ben or my friends."
"He's right, we've all experienced loss that we blame ourselves for. My Uncle Ben was also killed and it was my fault." Peter-2 tells him.
"So did I. Also…I lost…I lost Gwen, my, um…she was my MJ." Peter-3 said sadly, before turning to Peter-4. "My Caitlin. I couldn't save her. I'm never going to forgive myself for that. But I carried on, tried to, um…tried to keep going, tried to keep being the, uh…the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, 'cause I know that's what she would've wanted. But…at some point, I just…I stopped pulling my punches. I got rageful. I got bitter. I just don't want you to end up like…like me."
"The night Ben died…I hunted down the man who I thought did it. I wanted him dead. I got what I wanted. It didn't make it better. It took me a long time to…learn to get through that darkness."
"I hear you both, I've felt loss that affected me greatly. I also hunted down Ben's killer. But I couldn't kill him either. That wouldn't be what he wanted or what he taught me." Peter-4 told them. "When my friend Ronnie died. I left Central City, that's where I live and protect, to go to Starling City, to help my friend Oliver. I used to wear a suit like yours," pointing at Peter-3's suit and then to Peter-1. "And made this suit, which coincidentally looks like one you used to wear. Oliver knew loss too, so he helped me mourn. But really, I didn't want to see the face of my friend's fiance…Caitlin." This detail surprised everyone. "I thought seeing her would just remind me of my failure. But the more time I spent in Starling, the more I missed my friend. So I went back and we helped each other, cheered each other up, I even finally revealed my identity to her. Neither of us admitted it at the time, but we were falling in love. I know it's not the same-"
"No, I get it. One door closes, another one opens. Our losses may be the end of those we lost, but not ours. Life goes on for us." Peter-2 reassured him.
"I hear you all, but I wanna kill him. I wanna tear him apart." Peter-1 says, a little angry, but also still sad about May. "I can still hear her voice in my head. Even after she was hurt, she said to me that we did the right thing. She told me that with great power-"
"-comes great responsibility." Peter-2 interrupts. After hearing that, he turns to Peter-3 and 4, who are also affected by this.
"Wait, what? How do you know that?" Peter-1 asked, confused.
"Uncle Ben said it." Peter-3 said, still emotional.
"The day he died." Peter-2 continued.
"Same. That phrase is multiversal. Part of the reason that we're all Spider-Man." Peter-4 said.
"Maybe she didn't die for nothing, Peter."
Sorry this one was so short, I was planning to combine it with the lab scene, but I ended up making it longer for reasons you'll see next time. Since it'll talk about events from "Flash and Spider-man," I plan to release the chapter on February 3, when Barry travels to from 2017 in "Once and future Flash."
The heroes Peter-4 references with "the never ending battle" and crime fighting a war are Superman and Batman.
Again, played fast and loose with Peter-4's motives. In "Flash and Spider-Man"(Spoilers if you haven't read the first 2 chapters), Peter left Central City after Ronnie disappeared and first merged with Martin Stein, he leaves and heads to Starling City and helps Team Arrow fight Deathstroke. He returns during the events of the second episode of the Flash with Multiplex, meaning he at least left before Sara died (pre-lazarus pit), but months after Deathstroke was defeated. Hope "What if Universe is ok with my interpretation of Peter's motives for staying in Starling for so long.
