Ted and Doug looked at each other as AC-12 officers began running to the ladies toilets to help the colleague who had summoned them. "Interview suspended," Ted declared, knowing that Kate was in trouble. "You're free to go," he told the officer they were interviewing, "but don't go anywhere," he warned. "We will pick this up tomorrow and I remind you that you are still under caution," he added as both he and Doug left the room. The accused and his rep watched them go, wondering what on earth was going on.
"Someone's collapsed in a cubicle," the female officer informed her SIO as he approached with Doug.
"Sir," said Doug, "permission to enter the ladies'," he requested.
"Granted," replied Ted.
Doug stepped in to new territory behind the junior officer. "There," she said, pointing to an arm that could be seen on the floor, protruding into the room from a closed cubicle. Doug recognised the sweater that adorned the arm of the hand. It was what Kate had been wearing.
Dashing in to the free cubicle beside the closed one, Doug stood on the toilet and peered over the cubicle wall. Kate was collapsed in a ball on the floor. Her trousers and knickers around her ankles. "Kate!" Doug cried, seeing his partner collapsed. He saw her move a little when he called her name. "You ok?" He asked.
"Pain," she groaned, barely audible.
"Gaffer!" Shouted Doug. "We're gonna need an ambulance," he demanded before turning back to Kate. "I'm coming over, ok Kate?" he informed his partner before hauling himself up and over the wall between the two cubicles and lowering himself down as gracefully as he could without injuring himself or Kate.
"Is she breathing?" Doug heard Ted ask as he joined Doug in the female bathroom.
"Yeah," replied Doug. "She's semi conscious," he relayed to his boss who passed the same information down the phone to ambulance control. "She said she had pain," he continued. "Where's the pain, Kate?". She didn't answer but moved her hand to her lower abdomen with a groan. "I think it's abdominal," Doug informed Ted. "I'm gonna try and open the cubicle door so the paramedics will be able to assess her more easily," he continued as he thought about the best way to do it.
There really was no option but to move Kate slightly. "I'm sorry, Kate," Doug apologised to his friend as he tried moving her as gently as he could.
"Aaagghhh," Kate moaned as she was moved.
"Sorry," Doug apologised again, but he persisted until he was able to open the cubicle door. Ted looked down very worriedly at his female officer.
"We're going to have to get her out of the cubicle," Ted suggested.
"Yep," agreed Doug. It was very cramped and hardly hygienic. Very carefully he picked Kate up, bridal style and walked a few steps out of the cubicle before lying her down in the floor in front of the sinks. Kate clutched at her stomach and moaned through the whole move, grateful to be put down in the floor again.
"Let's cover her up with something," Ted suggested. He felt uncomfortable seeing his star junior officer undressed below the waist and wanted to give her as much dignity as possible.
It wasn't long before the paramedics arrived and were quickly ushered in to the bathroom and started assessing their patient. "She's tachy," one said after placing ECG electrodes on Kate's chest and finding her heart racing along at over 120 beats a minute. "And hypotensive," he added once he got a blood pressure reading. It had taken a while as it was in her boots.
"She's in shock," the other, more senior paramedic deduced. "IV cannula and fluid," he ordered his junior who did as instructed whilst he tried to find out the cause. He looked under Kate's blanket. "She's not bleeding externally," he said out loud. "You mentioned she had abdominal pain?" He checked with Ted and Doug who were stood nearby.
"Yes," answered Doug.
The paramedic placed his hand on Kate's abdomen and she shouted in pain. "Sorry, Kate," the paramedic said as he continued his examination. "Guarding," he said to his colleague. Kate did not like her abdomen touched. He moved his hand all over her stomach. In the lower right quadrant Kate shouted louder. "More tender in the right iliac region,".
"What does that mean?".
"Well it could be a couple of things," the senior paramedic replied. "She could have ruptured her appendix," he suggested. "Or it could be something gynaecological," he added. "She's not pregnant is she?".
"Not that I know of," Ted said, but knew it wasn't an impossibility after her serious romance with Steve..
"We need to get her to the hospital and they can find out what it is," he said.
The two medics with Doug and Ted's assistance got Kate on to a stretcher and were soon heading off to the hospital. Ted followed behind in his car. When he arrived in the Emergency Department, he was shown to a quiet room where he waited for an update.
He didn't have to wait long before a doctor came to inform him that they were taking Kate straight up to the emergency theatre. It was a very brief visit because an ultrasound of Kate's abdomen had revealed nearly a litre of blood in her abdomen and they needed to stop the flow.
Alone again, Ted sat thinking. The doctor who had spoken to him had been a gynaecologist and he couldn't help but remember the paramedics question about the possibility of Kate being pregnant. Yes they had split up, but if Kate was pregnant then it was likely to be Steve's child she was carrying. The man had a right to know he may be about to be a father and should be there by Kate's side.
"I'm looking for Kate Fleming," Steve said worriedly to the hospital receptionist a couple of hours later. "I just know she was taken to the emergency theatre,".
"Hang on," the receptionist said. "Let me find someone who can help you," she said.
A couple of phone calls later and Steve was being directed to a private room where he was told a surgeon would come and find him. It had been quite an afternoon since he'd answered the call from Superintendent Hastings. He hadn't listened much after Ted had described what had happened to Kate that day. He just knew he had to be by her side and had dropped everything to travel north. He hoped that Kate would let him see her when she was up to it. They hadn't spoken since they had split up but hopefully him travelling to see her meant something.
A knock at the door interrupted his musings and he turned to see a doctor enter the room. "Mr Fleming?".
"Steve Arnott actually," he corrected.
"Sorry," the doctor apologised. "But you know Kate Fleming,".
"Yes," replied Steve. "Her boss phoned me to say she was having emergency surgery because she was bleeding. Is she ok?".
The doctor sat down. "We've stopped the bleeding. She lost a lot of blood and she's very lucky but yes she'll be ok,".
"What happened?".
"I'm afraid she had something called an ectopic pregnancy-".
"Kate's pregnant?!" Steve said shocked. Kate had told him she was protected from pregnancy because she had had the coil fitted, otherwise he would have made sure he had used something when they had had sex. They had only been dating a few months- far too early to even think about having children.
"Not anymore, I'm afraid," the doctor replied sadly.
