Hiccup Haddock was sound asleep in his bed. He had had an exhausting week at school, doing an extra-credit art project. He also had to deal with the Twins and Snotlout, who attempted to obliterate said project until his girlfriend Astrid knocked them into next Tuesday.
Either way, his model of a Night Fury dragon had earned him extra credit. Not that he truthfully needed it because he was the most intelligent kid in school. But like his mother, Valka always said, it never hurt to push yourself some.
He'd been so depleted that he had nearly forgotten his nightly routine of caring for his stump. Most individuals didn't realize how challenging it was for those who had prosthetics to take care of themselves.
His dreams started peacefully enough, riding the back of a dragon. Then he became the dragon! He felt pure terror as Vikings started shooting flaming arrows at him. The dream Vikings were about to slaughter him when, unexpectedly, he felt something yank on his chest.
He bolted awake, grateful to be out of his nightmare, only to hear two meek yelps. He shook his head briefly to rid himself of the night terrors. Then he peeked over his bed and saw his little brother Boden and little sister Una in their pajamas.
Each had an expression of pure terror and looked dead tired. "Boden? Una? What are you doing up at this hour?" he asked quietly, not to wake their parents.
They both replied in unison. "I had a nightmare." Boden talked about his nightmare first, where he found himself covered in a thousand gashes and some shadowy figure about to slash his throat.
Una then talked about her nightmare. She'd first been having a joyous time in her dreams, playing with adorable kittens. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, they were being mauled by an unseen force, and she couldn't help rescue them from whoever was butchering them all!
"You two aren't the only ones who had nightmares tonight. I dreamed I was a dragon about to be slain. You know, like in our previous lives?" The younger children nodded before Hiccup welcomed them onto his bed. The three of them snuggled closely before falling into a soothing slumber. All was well.
