"No! This is out of line, you can't make me do this!" Kara slammed her fists down on the table glaring between Baron and the Foot Leaders.
"Are you doubting my Master's brilliant plan?! I WILL HAVE YOU PUNISHED FOR YOUR CRIMES!" The shaven headed, female foot recruit shouted, pointing evilly at her making Kara roll her eyes, "It's bad enough that you have me helping these guys without knowing what the heck is going on but this plan..it's going too far. I. Don't. Want. To. Do. This."
"You're the only one capable of completing this mission without a hitch. Draxum here would prefer brute force and we stand out too much." The sharp-toothed lieutenant stated crossing his arms over his chest.
Kara gritted her teeth, turning to Baron in hopes he would take her side, show some sign that he atleast tolerated her but all he did was look away, "Do as they say."
There was a split second emotion of shock on her face that melted to nothing, snatched the jewel from the table, and turned her back to them before flying away without another word, the gargoyles following after her.
Baron watched her leave staying silent the entire time while the two talked to themselves about teenagers. He was on the verge of completing his mission of finally ending the humans reign above and he wasn't going to let anything get in his way; everything else was secondary to his goal. His eye twitched at that thought his mind freezing the image of her shocked face staring right at him, his hand clenched without him realizing it, only to be brought back when the Foot leaders excused themselves to spy on the target.
April closed her locker door with a huff to calm herself down, "Alright, O'Neil, it's going to be a normal day; no exploding mutants or creepy pizzas. Just. Be. Normaah-ah-ah?" She froze, almost dropping her books in the process, when she thought she saw Kara walking in the crowd of kids. Stuffing her books in her bag she went to follow after the person, shouting her name, but the noise of the crowds drowned her voice til the person was gone out of sight. "That can't be Kara, she's been mutated. Me wanting normal must have me hallucinating. Yup. That's it." She threw her bag over her shoulder and went to move only for the bell to ring, this causing her to groan out loud and race to her next class.
She soon forgot about the Kara look alike when she met Sunita; a new transfer student whose personality could light up a small village with her cheery, positive attitude. April chuckled at her newest text when a sound on her right caught her attention; it being Leo falling over from inside a trashcan, "April, you got to come. Mikey found some invisibility paint, we're gonna put it on dad's tail."
April laughed softly at their hijinks, "I love you guys, and def send me pics, but now that school's over I'm just gonna chill and have a nice, normal day."
"Scoff. Are you really still on this whole "I want things to be normal" kick?" Donnie lowered down, upside down, on the fire escape ladder, bending his two fingers for emphasis.
"Uh, what were these for?" April copied his air quotes not looking amused in the slightest, "I am normal."
Each shared their thoughts of different times April showed where she was, in fact, not normal.
"Yes, what big city girl doesn't have a kayak and hazmat suit?" Donnie questioned with a smug expression.
"Look, guys, just because I loooove the bonkers doesn't mean I don't want normal sometimes too."
"I mean, you could try, but it'll be easier for everyone involved if you just admit you're a total weirdo magnet."
"That's not true! Kara wasn't a weirdo at all." As soon as her name came out of her mouth she immediately stopped, looking over at Donnie worriedly seeing his expression change for just a moment but quickly trying to hide it. Now that she mentioned her...should she bring up seeing her at school, as a human no less? No, it was only for a moment and she wouldn't want to hurt Donnie anymore by bringing it up without proof. "A-Anyways, I got non-weirdo friends, like-like my new friend Sunira...Su-Suneera...Sunita! Who I'm texting to see if she wants to hang out later. And she does! Hah! In your face!" April danced off while mockingly laughing at them.
Target was in sight and of course she had to be with April, the one person in this whole city she was trying to avoid. Playing with her phone, her back to them, she eyed them casually only to freeze when not only the Foot were trying to intervene but two of the turtles were spying on them as well though was unable to tell which due to their disguises; Raphael being crossed out of the equation for obvious reasons. Did they know what they knew? If so, she had to act fast; pocketing her phone and putting on some techno beats she pulled the hood over her head and ran at them full speed.
April and Sunita were fixing to order a pretzel when a shadowed person ran between them, grabbing their hands, and ran off the opposite direction they were going, the person running too fast for either of them to react quick enough.
"Woah-what just happened?" Donnie asked, watching April and her friend suddenly disappear from their sights.
"I don't know but we need to act fast, they might be in danger." Leo narrowed his eyes both of them running after them.
Once they were a ways away April finally registered what was going on and managed to free herself from her captor, "Ok, I don't know who you think you are but you don't know who you're messing with."
Having stopped near an alley, the person began to speak while trying to catch their breath, "I'm sorry, you two were being stalked by some weird looking people so I had to get you guys away." Kara lowered the hood to reveal her human self, giving them an apologetic smile, "New York can be dangerous around this hour."
April did a double take seeing Kara, as a human, right in front of her! "KARA?!" She looked exactly the way she did when they worked at Albearto's together though her bangs were longer, still covering her right eye, and she wore a brooch hair pin that held her hair back on the left side. The only thing strange about her appearance were her clothes: wearing a black hoodie, long, blue jean pants that rested over her sneakers, and fingerless gloves; the complete opposite of her normal clothes.
"Oh. Do you two know each other?" Sunita poked between them, looking between the two, smile still on her face.
"Yeah, we use to work together but we don't really hang out. I'm Kara, by the way." She reached her hand out to the girl who eagerly took her hand, shaking it, "I'm Sunita. I hope we can be friends." This caused Kara to laugh, "I don't see why not. I was fixing to get something to eat, why don't you guys join me?"
"Oh, can we? Please, please, please, please?" Sunita held her hands behind her back bouncing on her heels in excitement looking to April who was still in shock at the person before her til the confused faces of the two snapped her out of it, "Yeah..sure..ok." April's hesitation went unnoticed by Sunita who hollered in excitement before taking both their arms and walking away, "New York is such an amazing place!"
Kara was sitting next to Sunita listening as she shared her thoughts of the city, smiling ear to ear at her pure excitement eyes trailing over to April on the other side of the booth feeling her stare on her though she quickly hid herself behind the menu, "So, have you decided on what to eat, April?" Kara asked sitting up to look at her own menu her eyes wanting one of everything.
"Oh, I don't know. There's just so much to choose from."
"Why don't you pick, Sunita? I'm not a picky eater." Kara leaned back setting her menu down.
"Uh sure." April agreed.
This got Sunita's eyes to light up, "Really? Well, ok! Waiter, these three New Yorkers would like three of your New Yorkiest pizzas."
Outside Leo and Donnie climbed on to the statue outside the restaurant having tracked April with her phone's location, "Now that we're back on track Operation Pizza, subset to Operation Normal i-is..." Donnie's eyes widened when they fell on a third person with them.
"What is it? Did April set something on fire?" Leo found a comfortable position on the statue's hat when he saw what Donnie was looking at, "Is that Kara?! But how is she human again?"
"I...I don't know.." His eyes began to search over her for an answer but she looked exactly the same minus the clothes and hair. They didn't dream up her being turned into a mutant, joining the evil side, and fight against them did they? If so then what was going on? Why was she able to smile like she use to? Watching their pizza arrive he saw her eyes light up and immediately try to take a bite of it only to burn her tongue, the two girls laughing at her reaction and she joining in. He lowered his gaze feeling his heart ache for some reason when Leo snapped him out of his thoughts, "We can't lose focus right now, look," He pointed down to the two Foot hiding themselves behind the tables outside, "Operation Normal just went defcon red alert."
"They usually go by number, but, uh, let's move."
Chewing happily on her pizza Kara glanced to Sunita surprised to see her eating with a fork and knife, "It's a bit unusual to eat pizza like that. Hope I didn't scare you when I burned my tongue."
"Oh, not at all, I just like to keep my hands clean, they get messy very easily. I'm surprised you're eating pizza with your gloves on, you're gonna get grease all over them." Sunita ate at her pizza looking at her hands curiously.
Kara lowered her pizza, looking down at her hands, "There's a scar that I'm uncomfortable with people looking at..I'd rather not talk about it." Sunita and April looked at her in worry making Kara flinch and turn away, "Anyways, even though pizza is great either hot or cold it's best to eat it fresh." She smiled as best she could at the two only to blink when she and April heard something hit the window, her eyes widening recognizing the blue mask to be Leonardo disguised as the old lady from before, their eyes meeting for a split second til he was dragged away,
"Um, I'll be right back. Why not see if you can find us a dessert." April giggled nervously while handing the menu to Sunita who gasped at the opportunity to show she was capable, "I will not let you down." She whispered, determined.
Kara lowered her brows, eyes narrowed, as she watched April run outside while moving to her third slice.
When April got back she looked at the two in a sort of rushed panic, "Pizzas so last week. Let's go. Out back." She grabbed both of their arms, Kara grabbing two more slices before both of them were dragged away.
Kara's eyes brightened and sparkled at the glowing, neon lights in the darkened arena, "This..is the best idea ever." All three of them charged forward with a battlecry. Kara split from the group, running to the tower, and hiding in the shadows tagged everyone inside, "Atleast that training is good for something." She poked her head out the opening scanning for April and Sunita when she saw the Foot and turtles tussling and moving towards the girls. She smacked her forehead in annoyance while lowering her weapon and biting her lip to the point of piercing the skin, "Just once..." She groaned before running towards them.
She snuck up on the buff Foot and turtle and upon seeing an opening she threw her gun at them, hitting the Foot in the head, "Someone as big and buff as you shouldn't be picking on an old lady or is all that muscle just for show?" She crossed her arms, frowning at him.
This got the buff Foot to growl, "How about I beat on you instead." He shoved the old lady out of the way walking towards her, "Hope you can keep up." She smirked and turned around to lead him away.
Kara turned a corner once she lost sight of him and saw Sunita shooting away and having a good time, "Sunita, we gotta get out of here." She grabbed her hand and went to leave only for the Buff Foot to block their path with his fist raised, "Going somewhere?"
"Oh, geez," Kara shoved Sunita out of the way to take the hit but blinked in surprise when the old lady stepped between them, blocking his fist with their staff, "Grandma's here!" Kara's eyes widened when she heard Donatello's voice and took a step backwards. Shaking her head she turned to Sunita to flee when she instead flew at the Foot, kicking him in the face, and sending both of them down to the lower level.
"Uh, was that Sunita? She's got a little pepper." Donnie smiled with pride.
"She's a mix of sugar and spice, I see." Kara was bent over next to him, smiling at Sunita as well and glanced at him, "Hey, Donatello.." She whispered but blinked when he pointed his weapon at her, she taking a step back, "Ok, Kara, what is going on? What do you know about this?"
"I don't know anything, honest! They don't even know who I am!" Kara pleaded with him this causing him to hesitate, clenching his weapon tight, "For one day I just wanted to forget...this whole situation," She gestured to her and him, "I wanted to feel normal for once..but it looks like that'll never happen." She reached for the hairpin but blinked when he stopped her, taking her hand in his, closing the gap between them. Using his other hand he reached up and brushed aside her bangs his brows raising when he saw the scar on her cheek from the Hypno fiasco, running his thumb over it and making her squeeze her eyes shut. When she opened them she stared into his eyes, hers beginning to gloss over with tears, til she remembered what was going on, "You need to help your brother, I'll get Sunita and April out of here." She lowered their hands, giving his a gentle squeeze, before they both parted ways.
"-They've been following me for days. That's why I went undercover as a human. I just wanted a normal day."
When Kara arrived she saw Sunita push her brooch and change from a normal, human girl to a green, glob girl, this causing Kara to do a double take, "Wha, wait, you're a Yokai?" She and April said in unison.
"A Googlyschmootz." Sunita corrected.
"That's...actually insane." Kara said in awe with a croocked smile.
"I don't freak you out, do I?" Sunita hunched her shoulders, looking worried til she gasped in surprise when Kara touched her hairpin revealing her mutant, moth self, "Nah, not really.
"Oh my gosh, you're so beautiful!" Sunita smiled wide, this reaction having Kara stand there awkwardly, redness coming to her cheeks. "Um...t-thanks, a-a-nways we probably shouldn't be here." She stood to leave til they all saw the turtles weren't doing so well.
"Hey, Suniitaaa~ Isn't today your birthday?" April gave her a coy smile only to change into a smirk when Sunita realized her plan, "Oooh! Good thinking." April and Sunita charged forward, April tossing Sunita at them and she exploding into a goo bomb, her bits and pieces going everywhere.
Kara. Kara had no idea what to think of this, this being her first time seeing a Googlyschmootz in action, and wondered if there was something she could do til she spotted her prize.
Now that she was alone she sat on the edge of the Laser Dome roof and closed her eyes to collect her thoughts enjoying the small breeze that tickled her skin, having changed back into a human. She leaned backwards while holding her hand to the sky and began to count her fingers, glaring at the small part of the burn scar that poked out from the gloves only to blink when April was leaning over her, Leonardo and Donatello on each of her sides. She closed her eyes and turned around to face them, keeping a neutral expression, "Go ahead."
"With what?" April asked confused.
"Ask the questions: Did I know about this? Was this my plan all along? Why are you human?"
"Well, there's no point now." Leonardo commented, his eyes never leaving her, having a nagging feeling at the back of his mind trying to remember something about her human form.
She looked away staring at the full moon, "No, I didn't and it wasn't, none of this was suppose to happen; I just wanted to feel normal again. I miss the simple things like going to school, eating regular food, walking in the open without the fear of being judged. That's not too much to wish for, even for someone like me, right?" She leaned back with a sigh but blinked when her hand touched air and she began to fall backwards, "Welp. This is it." She closed her eyes, accepting her demise, only to open them when Leonardo and Donatello grabbed a hand. After a stare off they helped her back up, "Um...thanks." Deciding to step away from the edge she looked from the edge to them, "So..what now?"
Donatello was the first to make a move, moving to sit beside her, Leonardo and April following suit who looked at her with a smile, Donnie patting the seat between he and Leonardo. She stared at them in shock til her feet slowly moved and sat down next to them.
What felt like hours all four of them talking about nothing Kara began to let her guard down and it wasn't long til she was laughing along side them.
When it was finally time for them to depart Kara waved goodbye to them before climbing down the ladder and walking through the dark alley. Feeling she was alone she pressed her hairpin and brought the hoodie over her head, her wings wrapping around her body, her eyes narrowing when she first saw the light of the flames then their glowing eyes.
"You took your precious time." Foot Lieutenant stated, not looking too pleased.
"I'd say she was distracted." Buff Foot smirked, baring his teeth.
"Being ninja and all you'd think you'd know of patience." Kara sneered before pulling out the boots from her pouch, "Next time you want to help; don't. You almost ruined my mission but then again seeing you getting your butt kicked was pretty entertaining." She tossed them the boots before opening a portal to her room and dropped on to her bed, these events draining her mentally and physically but, for once, she fell asleep with a smile on her face.
Donnie lay wide awake in his bed, one arm behind his head and one leg crossed over his lifted knee his mind going back to the human Kara from the way she ate pizza with April and Sunita to them just talking on the roof. She looked so tired, so drained, and yet was able to smile and laugh. He looked down at the hand that held her own and clenched it while bringing it to his mouth, closing his eyes with a sigh, silently hoping for her return to him.
Whatever you guys say about the Rise series, whether you like it or not, that little dance and laugh April did to Leo and Donnie before hanging out with Sunita is one of the things that got me loving April. Gah, she has such a big personality. Anyways, reviews are nice but so are hugs and I'll take em' all. Til the next chapter!
