This was not how he expected this conversation to go, for Luigi to just…Didn't he have anyone before? The way he was talking just gave Boo the feeling that as upset as Luigi was about his deception, there was something bothering him more.
"So? Why pick me, it's not like I'd be any help!" Luigi said rather hostilely, and Boo was starting to see what he'd done might have been a bigger mistake than the one he'd thought he'd be making. There was real anger in Luigi's voice, not the timid little mouse the man could be-there was no sign of that man-instead Luigi was picking a fight with him. What exactly was he missing?
"If I didn't interrupt you with someone, why are you so angry with me?" Luigi's brows mushed together, and his lips thinned, A crackle of electricity caught Boo off guard, and he backed off. Green lightning was circling the man's fists, blood dripping from where his nails were digging into his palms.
"You don't have any right to question me Boo. You started this now fix it, I don't want to be married to someone who has proven time and time again that they don't care about me, who finds me to be nothing more than a pest." He wasn't yelling, but the rage simmering under his skin was far more apparent than any other time Boo had angered this man.
"There are a few ways to 'fix' this, but you would be damning a lot of people by doing it." Luigi's frown only grew deeper.
"What do you mean? What have you done?" Luigi asked quickly and Boo sighed, he hadn't wanted to tell the man the reason he'd done this but honestly, it might make Luigi understand why he'd been so desperate to basically trick him.
"Without a living bride, the artifact that allows the Ghost Dimension to continue existing will have no power, thus destroying my kingdom and all those who reside there."
Luigi's eyes widened and the frown disappeared,
"Why didn't you want to tell me that before? I mean that is a serious reason for taking on a. A whatcha call it. 'Living bride'? I mean if you had asked, I might have been willing to help you." Willing-why would Luigi be willing to help him at all as they were enemies!
"Why would I have any reason to think you would help me? We've been enemies since day one!" Luigi gave him a flat stare, rolled his eyes, and moved to go sit in one of the chairs around a small table. Elbows on the table, hands covering his face, Boo felt a sort of panic crawl up his throat as he moved to sit in the other chair.
"I might not agree with you, but this is something that threatens more than just you. Not all the ghosts are bad. I adore Polterpup after all." Ah that mutt, he hadn't thought that through, had he? Luigi could have been willing to help simply because it could affect the dog. Rage simmered however because he didn't want Luigi to just help because of the dog! He'd rather Luigi wanted to help because somewhere he respected Boo even though he'd beaten him a number of times.
"This could have all been avoided if you just used your words, you ass," Luigi said, a hand running through his hair. Boo watched enraptured at the sight, how often did he see the man without that blasted hat on his head?
"Would you have believed me? Married me because of it?" Luigi glared at him and shook his head.
"I would have believed you and helped you find someone to marry, I would have never married you-there's too much bad blood between us for there to be any sort of friendship between us." He didn't want friendship, after seeing Luigi on their wedding night he didn't want to be enemies or friends…
"What happened to the last living bride? I mean you married them too, right?" Boo frowned; he wasn't that old! Not that he remembered when he died, so he wasn't exactly sure how long he'd been a Boo… But the point was Luigi was asking him questions, that might help Luigi understand why he'd taken the path he had.
"No that was the old king Boo. My father was married I might have taken over but the bond between artifact and living bride can last well past the reign of one king. So, While I don't know what happened to the old one, I can assume they died. The artifact started to destabilize and that's when I knew, it's also why I rushed our wedding the way I did."
Luigi covered his eyes with his hand, and Boo wanted to pout.
"Dio this is a mess. I understand you were under pressure but why would you just marry me rather than come talk to me." He hadn't thought about it honestly, panic had taken over and the only person he'd been able to think of was Luigi, the only man he viewed as an equal.
"I didn't want to give you the chance to say no." Luigi looked up at his hand hovering in the air, tears dripping down his face. Boo's chest was burning in pain at the look of utter devastation on the man's face.
"I…I would have said no. I wanted to marry for love one day. Why didn't you stop to think what this was going to do to me?" Boo felt shame at what he'd done but there was something about Luigi that drew him to the man, his strength even through his fear the way he'd wanted to protect his family…Boo had wanted that on some level even if he really hated being defeated.
"But you said you didn't have anyone." Luigi huffed, tears still streaming down his face.
"No, I didn't but hoped to find someone one day. But now that we're married, I can't do that anymore now, can I? I will never be loved just like I knew I'd be." And he placed his head down on the table, sobs erupting from him, and Boo just didn't understand how Luigi could feel that way, never loved?
There had to be some sort of misunderstanding here because there was no way that Luigi was so alone as that! But the wretched sobs were getting to him, Boo moved around the table and picked the man up, Luigi flailed but Boo held him close and went to sit on the bed. Luigi struggled against him, but he wasn't about to let the other up.
"Why did you think that you'd be alone? You are so powerful, anyone who would deny that is a fool." Luigi laughed but shook his head.
"I'm also terrified of practically everything, and I'm kind of a freak…" Wait what the hell was Luigi talking about?
"I feel insulted by that comment! Freak what the hell do you mean by that?" Luigi snorted, before wiping his face with a sleeve. Tears slowly stopping, thank God for that at least!
"It's not considered normal where I live for a man to love another man." And that meant something?
"What's that have to do with calling yourself something like that?" Luigi frowned and shook his head like he didn't understand.
"It's considered wrong for two people of the same gender to be in love." That was completely backward! It didn't matter who loved whom as long as they genuinely cared about each other, or it was an arranged marriage which still happened after all. Peach was lucky Peasley had chosen to Knight Mario so that Mario could marry her instead.
"It's not considered that way here. Surely you know that?" Luigi nodded but he looked kind of sad still.
"I know…But my family would never accept me marrying a man, or in this case a ghost. I'm terrified that I'll lose all of them." That could be a problem, he hardly wanted his consort to be desolate and inconsolable. Luigi's emotions would affect the artifact and if he Got sad enough, and lost all hope he could very easily hurt himself…And the dimension would die with him.
Boo had felt the last bride's life slip away moments before he managed to grab one of the priests and wed Luigi before the dimension collapsed. While he might have had a chance to ask, it would still have been a quick wedding and they wouldn't have had time to search for a bride for him. Boo sighed before pressing a kiss to Luigi's forehead, they had a lot to work on, but he wasn't about to allow Luigi to feel as if there was no hope for him to get something out of this union.
"Come visit me in person, I promise to behave. We can talk longer that way because you're about to wake." Luigi nodded and relaxed in his arms.
"I'll come, just promise not to stick me in a painting."
