It was alright, I chose "Dare". I didn't have to answer a question. But, wait, what if these people order me to do something outrageous, like kiss Matsuno? Didn't Emma mention kissing before? Sweat trickled on the side of my nape and I swallowed. Fuck, I was getting nervous.
With a spark in her eyes, Emma stood up and walked toward Matsuno. She asked him to stand up and he did.
What the hell? Would she really...
"Hey, Sakura, I want you to..."
Here it comes. The group was excited, smiling and chuckling.
Emma ordered to, "Point your favorite part of Chifuyu's body."
The other boys guffawed. They said: "Nice!" "That's a good one!" "I wonder what she'll choose." They looked at me and I thought of my answer.
Honestly, it wasn't a bad dare. There could be worse orders that I might not be comfortable doing. Still, I felt a bit shy. But, really, which part should I choose? I liked Matsuno's good heart, but I also liked his expressive eyes. Or maybe his mind? His wide shoulders? There were too many to choose from and I was tempted to say I liked everything about him as a whole but I wanted to challenge myself. Choose only one.
Finally, I raised my hand and pointed at my boyfriend's hands. I said to Emma, "His hands."
"Hands?" echoed Draken.
Emma just smiled at me. She asked, "And why is that?"
I answered, "They're warm and make me feel safe." With Matsuno's hands, it was like he could take me anywhere. Like he could make me escape. Since Matsuno's appearance, my outlook on my life began changing. Now, I was not only thinking of death but I also began valuing and celebrating life again. With the few hours with him, I seemed to escape my dark world and enter somewhere with bright light. And I loved it.
"Sakura," Emma was still smiling at me. "You really like Chifuyu?"
Did I?
My answer was obviously a big "Yes".
"We don't know much about you." Emma strode toward me. "When we heard about Chifuyu getting a girlfriend, of course, we got curious. We tried asking people about a Sakura Minamikawa but there wasn't enough information about you. As you already know, Chifuyu is an idiot and we don't want him damning himself with a bad girlfriend. That was why we wanted to see you in person. I'm sorry if it felt like we were trying to interrogate you. But, we actually just want to know more about you."
"Do you still doubt me?" I asked them.
Emma replied, "Not anymore. I saw how the two of you looked at each other. You really look like you like each other. And that is enough. Sakura, your background doesn't matter. Please just promise us that you won't hurt Chifuyu."
I could never hurt him even if I had to so I promised Matsuno's friend that "Yes, I wouldn't."
"Okay, that's enough." Draken stood up. "If you're all done eating let's go to the arcade!"
Arcade again?
And what about my quality time with Matsuno? I frowned and I saw Matsuno frowning too. We got dragged outside Burger Prince and towards the crowded street. After a few minutes, Emma spotted a picture booth.
"Let's take a picture," Matsuno suggested to which the group agreed. He held my hand and guided me toward the booth. "Minamikawa-san and I will take a photo first."
The stall was wider than it looked. It had one camera in front and a screen where we could see ourselves. Matsuno was close enough to me that I could smell his cologne. My heart beat loudly inside my chest. We were alone in the little booth.
"Look at the camera!" Matsuno told me and I did, without striking a pose. For the next pictures, Matsuno made a peace sign and a heart sign. Then, for the last shot, he put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him. My eyes widened as the camera took the photo. "There," he said and led me out of the booth. Outside, he took the two copies of our pictures from the machine and handed me one. He told the others, "Let's take a group photo."
Everyone agreed and he motioned that they enter the booth first. However, when the rest of the group were inside, Matsuno grabbed my hand and whispered that we run.
With Matsuno laughing, we dashed away from the street where his friends were and passed buildings and stores. We stopped in front of the train station. Matsuno raised his hand in front of me, asking for a high five. I gave him one. "Nice escape," he said. Then he motioned to one of the shops, "Come. I wanted to take you there."
It was a jewelry store. Beautiful pearl and diamond accessories were displayed on shelves and racks together with those with gemstones. By the counter were luxurious accessories, too. There were no other customers so the sales lady was happy to welcome us into their store.
"Ack. They're freaking expensive!" the boy exclaimed.
I looked at the prices of the beautiful pieces of jewelry. These necklaces were ¥45,000. This one's ¥30,000. The cheaper ones were ¥20,000. How about the bracelets? Yeap, expensive too. And the rings.
"Which one are you buying?" I asked Matsuno. With my money, I could buy him several of these pieces but of course, I couldn't do that because I'm in disguise as an average middle school student.
Matsuno shook his head. "Shit. I was thinking of buying us matching rings but my budget can't avoid these." He looked at me apologetically. "Sorry."
Seriously? A matching ring with Matsuno? My heart soared to the clouds. I wanted it! But how can we buy rings now? I looked outside and saw an old vendor selling cheap wooden accessories. I tapped Matsuno's shoulder and pointed at what I found.
His smile was contagious. "Nice, Minamikawa-san! We can buy there."
We went to the vendor. Unlike the luxurious jewelry shop we entered before, the old man's items weren't made from shiny diamonds and gemstones but from wood and beads. They were bohemian and were equally beautiful.
Choosing was difficult but in the end, we settled for the ring with a bead in the middle. The bead was half sun and half moon. In my mind, I thought it quite suitable for us. Matsuno is the bright sun while I was the moon in darkness. We bought two of the rings, one for each of us. Watching each other, I thought Matsuno might grab the ring from my hand and put it on my finger. But, sadly, he didn't.
As he put on his, he told me, "This suits us, really. You as the sun and me as the moon. Because the moon can never shine without the sun."
I gasped. No. That wasn't what we were. How could he think of me as the sun? I would always be the moon. Or yet, a shadow. I was just darkness. My eyes quivered.
And I realized I've been wanting the light. These past few days, I had been feeling uneasy with being Death. It was as if I didn't want to be Death anymore.
Yes, that was it.
But, how could I not be Death? My life as Sakura Minamikawa was all that I had. Without it, I would be more than nothing.
"Minamikawa-san, let's go," Matsuno extended his hand toward me and I wanted to tell him to keep on being my escape. Until I free myself from my strong, heavy chains, I would hold on to his hand.
Our hands clasped, I whispered, "Chifuyu."
The boy stiffened and he looked into my eyes. Blushing, he smiled wildly at me. He said, "Sakura."
But that wasn't my true name.
Then my cell phone vibrated. I got a text from Taiju.
