Chapter Summary: All the glitz and glam will never free you Neither will the sweet candied whispers
Are you satisfied with this unfulfilled fantasy?
She awoke to the soft brush of a breeze that could only be described as a light kiss upon her fur, the dawn had only peaked beyond the clouds and shades of her room. She stayed like that for a while, taking in the fresh morning smell.
Chunhua sat up slowly from her bed, the covers falling to the wayside as she opened the right side of the window and took in the Valley from a lower perspective than she was used to. "It's still beautiful…"
The tiger leaned against the windowsill for a little while longer, lingering as if she wanted to watch the sunrise but she knew sooner or later the time to go was nearing.
So, before her neighbor could open their window, she slipped off her bed and got ready for the day, while hearing sounds downstairs. It was no doubt her father was getting ready for the day aswell. 'Noodles don't make themselves.'
After slipping on her green hanfu with floral designs and white shorts with stitching of bamboo on them, she stopped to pick up a light cream coat for the chilly walk up the mountain she'd be taking that morning.
She stalled her trip downstairs as a poster took hold of her attention. It was the latest edition of the entire team illustrated together after their latest battle, surrounded by heroic red and the shadows of black, the Furious Five stood around the Dragon Warrior clad in gold to lead them forward! But that wasn't what caught her attention.
Her amber eyes scanned over her face, something she'd avoided for a long time in how many artists depicted her features, they'd always been angular and sharp to capture the cold expression of Master Tigress.
A single digit touched over the features of today, showing that the past had been partially washed away to show the true colors of who she was, this image showed a smile of confidence and excitement along with her teammates!
Chunhua pulled her hand away as she adjusted her light coat, finally heading downstairs to the sounds of clattering pots and the smell of seasoning and fresh dumplings.
A light sound of snoring caused her to pause and flicker her ear to listen in on who could still be asleep at this time. "Are you going to wake Li up or should I?"
Mr. Ping didn't answer immediately as he was tasting his soup over the pot, the flames below dancing and crackling about in the dawn's coming rays inside the establishment. He nodded with a satisfied sigh before waving at his daughter. "No, he decided to take up Po on those afternoon classes Shifu started. So, I'll let him sleep in instead of forcing him up all those steps this early…It's a wonder you two do it every day."
Chunhua's plate was already half full, but some tofu on the side never hurt. "I'm used to it and it's helped me get to know Nagua better since the new year started."
The sound of chopping vegetables greeted her as she sat down with her breakfast, not too far from the counter so she could watch her father work. He prepared two small boxes of food, so carefully put together it almost seemed as if he painted each dish with sauce and spices.
And before she knew it, he was beside her with his breakfast and an extra plate that was slid without even a glance to see if it would fall off the edge of the table across from her. It stayed put.
"You're not opening up shop today?" She asked while chewing and looking toward the moon gate for her friend and new classmate. "Also, Good morning…"
It was easy to forget something as small as that nowadays…
Mr. Ping merely smiled as he ate his soup and replied. "Good morning…and no, there's too much to shop for this morning. I've got to catch up with Miss Peizhi, hopefully with Li for all the sales the farmers are starting for the spring season!" He twirled his chopsticks as he sighed, dreaming about all the produce he could buy. "I want at least two bags of flour."
Two dumplings were gone and she could hear the steps of Nagua grow closer. 'She's rushing for some reason…' Chunhua shook her head as she heard the young wolf walk in. "Try not to buy too much, if I can, I'll come straight to the market to help you-Morning Nagua."
The young wolf clad in a white hanfu shirt that was half tucked into her black skirt entered the fray with a tired sigh before she caught sight of a plate left unattended. "Morning-Oh!" Nagua hesitated before slowly sitting down. picking up joint chopsticks and pointing them at the calm old goose next to her. "You really don't have to make me breakfast…"
The chopsticks were snapped in record time.
"And yet you keep accepting it, showing me you're still hungry. I don't mind." Mr. Ping shook his head with a small laugh, seeming to take each second with a relaxing ease he hadn't before. "You get both myself and my stoves warmed up for the rush of pandas and new customers from afar I've been getting! Which brings me full circle-"
They both knew at this point, that Nagua was too busy enjoying the delights of Dragon Warrior and Tofu to reply. "You don't have to rush back down here for my sake, just take your time. Also," He snapped his chopsticks whilst looking toward the cloudy yet brilliant sky absentmindedly. "Don't you have practice with Viper today?"
"And with Mei Mei, along with Huan too." She added while cleaning after herself.
She could hear her father's tired sigh loud and clear. "I don't know how you balance all of that! I'd say just have fun but maybe rest a little here and there too while you're at it!"
"I will, I will," She was quick to slide two plates on top of each other as Nagua held her last three dumplings, she caught her father shaking his head. "I promise I will but there's just so much to experience! How can I stop at just one thing!?" The tiger couldn't help but shrug a little as she left the dishes to settle and patted Nagua as soon as she was close enough to go for the door.
Ping made a knowing 'Mmmhmm' noise as the two women left toward the moon gate with a wave of farewell toward him.
Well, Nagua was wagging her tail his way considering she had dumplings in her paws and mouth. "Oh wait-!"
The goose dashed to the kitchen and back out in a hurry, missing the large sleepy Li in the process! He leaned outside the moon gate on his flippers, thankful for her keen hearing for once. "You forgot your lunch!"
Chunhua ran back to him in record time with a small "Thanks! See ya!" before the day truly began.
The two walked whilst talking about techniques for Tiger style, barely anyone was up at this time so the path was clear and chilly.
They would imitate each other's moves as their shoes tapped on stone and the sun slowly caught up to them in the shadows of an ending eve.
"Wait, that's a really good drawing of that movement of the paw…" Nagua commented as they readily walked up the steps washing in sunlight and morning dew. She was looking upon Chunhua's boards that she'd scribbled on of a move they wanted to remember for later. "I have to get a hold of a brush as soon as we get up to the top! Honestly, you should maybe make it a side gig to make visual manuals."
The tiger hummed in thought at that, her future no longer seemed empty or predetermined. It was just open and as wide as the sky. 'I can see why Father fears its vastness a little now…'
The breeze blew by them, it was no longer as chilly as it used to be. It carried the warmth of spring on its heels. She ended up shrugging. "Maybe if Po asks me…but there are alot of better-suited professionals for that job… I'm still a beginner. Oh."
"Hmm?" Nagua flicked her ear up in attention as her friend looked up into the sky and soon her eyes followed. "What's that?"
"I don't know…" Chunhua also squinted at the being above, it was a mere black speck as most birds that passed by the Valley in the morning, usually as a shortcut to the farther southern parts of China. "Probably just a bird turning in a strange direction."
She decided to move on.
"Anyways, back to the main topic!" Nagua announced with a pointed digit toward the sky as they drew closer to the top. "So what if you're a beginner!? Everyone starts somewhere and you're a talented Kung Fu Master that can easily visualize moves just as close as Yinbei Rider's main artist!"
Tigress hid a laugh behind her board. "I don't think even I could draw as dynamically as that…maybe one day-"
The two stopped as they witnessed Shifu walking to the front as they made it to the top, he looked surprised and flattened the sides of his robe before standing proud.
The old Master cleared his throat as he stood tall with his staff. "Good morning Students-"
"GoodMorningShifu! Sorry, But I need to go write this down A S A P!" Nagua rushed past him with a small bow straight to the dorms, leaving Chunhua to look upon his wide-eyed expression turning to follow the young wolf's back.
He sighed.
Chunhua couldn't help but smile as she walked up to her Master, patted his shoulder, and gestured for them to follow after their newest student. "Good morning, Shifu. What's on the agenda today?"
The breeze washed over the grasslands on this mountain, causing a wave of green to rise and fall in the distance.
"Today, we're having our first outdoor class of the year," Po said with a wide smile on his face, keeping his paws at his sides. He could still see his digits fidgeting, wishing to move about but was ultimately stilled. "This isn't for meditation as you all may have guessed but an exercise I've spoken with Master Shifu about for the past couple of months."
Petals glided through the air as he walked around.
His paws did find their way to one another as they always did, but he couldn't judge his student. This was a part of who he was. "To help bolster education in not only chi but inner peace, I wanted to give everyone a better chance in finding their path." His green eyes wandered and the class of seven followed his gaze without delay.
Into the vast beauty and unknown of the caverns and caves of the mountains that lay beneath the steep and uneven fields that surrounded the palace. "The training hall is great and all, but we have a beautiful mountain to connect to right here! And we shouldn't waste that! Through my research with Master Crane,"
The bird in question nodded and as they rehearsed, he took a step toward the Dragon Warrior to stand by his side as aides to their teacher. "This could be a method to reach the paths you all want or may not even be aware of…" Po pointed toward his class, catching their attention. "This lesson will be a long one, some might gain it faster than others and some not…but that's okay!"
The sun shimmered over the green, evaporating the morning dew from its leaves, awakening the blooming plants to a new day.
"Because I want you all to find your way! And be the best you, YOUcan be!"
Shifu smiled as Po's words echoed in his ears, he'd practiced alot during the winter break to the point he could recite the whole speech himself. 'But…I'm proud of him.' He quietly admitted to himself as he walked down the mountains with long winding grass from his resting spot to a lone rock where he could see a speck of familiar green.
Standing still. "Master Mantis? Taking a break from your training with Bo Cai?" He inquired.
At first, Mantis didn't respond to his query much less the call of his name, his antenna merely was pushed along to the rhythm of the wind and the surrounding fields. It was tranquil and terrifyingly quiet to the point he almost found himself lost in nature's quiet song.
"Yeah…" Mantis answered absently, seeming farther away than usual. Not loud but reserved. "I just started thinking about all that stuff Po said about finding our path. Not too sure how this will help…but…"
The bug grumbled to himself as another strong gust threatened to mess up his robes before he fixed it. "But? You don't have to think about it all at once, Po was right when he said this was a long path…"
"But does it really have to be done alone?" Mantis looked up into the sky, the clouds covering the sun's rays. "If it's my path can't I choose to ask for help? I don't know, maybe I've just been sitting here too long but I'd rather find peace with my loved ones. Being alone just isn't my style anymore."
And Mantis did finally turn to him. "That makes sense? Hopefully?" He turned away from his master again, back to pondering atop that stone amongst a sea of overgrowth.
"It does," Shifu replied as he closed his eyes to think for himself for a moment. In a way, Mantis was right, this wasn't a journey one had to take on their own. "Po accompanied me on my journey to peace, Oogway told me such a thing would occur but…I didn't believe him at the time."
Without missing a beat, Mantis replied with. "You mean that time you tried to commit fraud-?"
There was a pause.
Shifu turned to leave as he stroked his beard, a bead of sweat going down his head. "I'll check back later with you, Mantis."
His journey took him west, closer to the forest yet still in the plains where he witnessed the might of the Snake Style Master; Viper in her natural element.
"HiYAA!" Her battle cry echoed throughout the seemingly endless fields ahead of them as her form moved about in ways he was unfamiliar with, there was more of a snap with her tail. And somehow more control of her lithe body with each move. It reminded him of…"Are you practicing another style?" Shifu's paw found its way to his beard once again as he watched her twirl around so fast, that it caused the grass to bend to her sheer will until the end of her performance. Her tail formed as the final hand gesture."Yes," Viper bowed with a noticeable lack of a smile, he didn't mention it. But couldn't help but note it. "I wasn't sure what to do with myself out here…so I decided to act."
Shifu found himself sitting amongst the warm grass, leaning into his staff for support as he watched her continue, testing and tasting the concept of these movements she'd witnessed and fought against for the past decade so smoothly. "Sometimes actions do speak louder than words. I just hope…in the end, you can smile about your choices."
"Until that day comes," Viper mused with a tilt of her head, seeming to dislike where the set was going and starting from scratch with a flick of her tongue. "I'll just take things slowly, in a way this sort of thinking has brought me more peace than anything else I've done in a very long time…Maybe living as my Father does wouldn't be so bad.""What do you mean by that? If you don't mind me asking?"
Blueish green eyes regard him for the first time, almost reflecting if not enhancing the natural landscape surrounding them. "My only wish at this moment is to help others and my guiding star has shown me even the most simple paths can lead to something incredible."
The present.
Speaking of that star…
'Come to think of it, I haven't ventured in these woods…' Shifu pondered as he walked right out of the grasp of tall grass plains and into something more light and manageable. He sighed at the thought of finding no one out here, but he'd looked everywhere around the open fields they would meditate around.
The forest was too chaotic in his opinion, with far too many sounds to distract one from the sole purpose of clearing one's mind. 'Or it could be my hearing impairing me…'
If anything the forest was giving him even more to think about now!
"Hyah!"
The sound of a well-rounded kick following the rounded echo of the staff interrupted the shifting of leaves and clatter of branches."That was pretty good!" Monkey spoke as he twirled his bamboo staff before placing it firmly upward. "I think you gained that momentum you wanted pretty cleanly there, never thought paw movements could help with that." He leaned onto his staff with the tilt of his head as he hummed in thought relishing in the breeze as he walked near them."Not yet," Nagua had yet to leave her readied stance, shifting her feet and paws ever so slightly. "There's still something missing, I can get way more impact than that-I know it!"
Only to catch the sight of familiar wood leaning on a small rock. "Is…this Chunhua's board?" He reeled his paw back from touching it in case one of his students was looking at it for their practice spar. He leaned his head forward to get a good look at it without blocking the view, it had simplistic yet detailed enough poses of tiger style, whilst it held down a piece of thin paper with similar outlines.
'These look wonderful.' He thought as he continued to take in the original pictures, the way the arrows swirled to almost mimic the movement needed for the momentum for this move, it was a set to build up more power in each kick and finally the strike!Twak!
"That's what I'm talking about!" Nagua cheered which caught his attention, it seemed he'd missed the improvements she'd made while looking upon the board but he couldn't help but notice the way Monkey rolled his wrist.
He felt that impact for sure.
"Alright, I see what you mean…" He rolled his wrist around one more time. "Maybe, I should start messing around with other styles too, I feel like this would help my shortcomings. You seemed to balance speed and power pretty well there.""Took a lot of focus though…" Nagua admitted with a shrug before turning and noticing him. "Oh, Hey Shifu.""That's Master Shifu." The old master sighed, seeming as if she would never call him by his title, he merely watched her walk right past him, whilst Monkey greeted him properly. "Honestly, I'm your teacher, you know you can ask me for advice aswell.""I have Master Po and that's all I need also, Chunhua makes these so you can go help Bo Cai." She pointed at the board and he couldn't help but feel replaced, they were really good for beginners and visual learners. "And even then, you let Chunhua call you Shifu…""We've known each other longer, so it's different," Shifu grumbled.
Nagua squints as she points at him whilst Monkey inspects the drawings inbetween them. "Ah, your favoritism finally shines through."
"It's not-!" He rolls his eyes. "You know what, Master Po can keep you."
Nagua smiled at his answer! "That's how I want it to be! Since he believes we can make a path for our inner peace," The young wolf hopped up, going right back to practicing the basics she'd known for so long. "I'm going to do it and start throwing cannonballs just like Master Po to achieve it!"
"I told you we are not doing that!" Po yelled from the far left."But-!" Nagua leaned back causing her red tie to lean back with her as she regarded 'Master Po', no he was not letting that go. "I don't know what else I could want, all I want is a cool moment like that!"
Po sighed as he handed a scroll to Crane before answering her, it looked as if they were still practicing their own speeches and future classes. "It was cool but!" The panda lifted his digit for emphasis. "I wanted to make a safe environment so you could connect with chi in its purest form; Nature."
The breeze stilled, allowing the trees a moment of calm that seemed to spread to everyone in the area.
"It's not all about what you want but what you may need, or not even realize what you have already…" Po's voice softened as his paw touched over the grass. "Such as this view, I've never been this far into the forest, much less the mountainside. There are so many things filled with the magic of life surrounding us right now. And I want everyone to appreciate it in their way."
Shifu couldn't help but nod even Crane who'd been so engrossed in his papers took a moment to feel the grass beneath his talons and take in the scent of the mountain air.
Nagua huffed and squatted down before laying flat on the ground amongst scattered flora with a soft sigh. "Fine but I'm still thinking about a cool way to gain it!"
"I forbid anything life-threatening!" Po huffed.
All he could do was laugh at the interaction before following suit with Nagua, laying down with his arms stretched into the sunlight-laced fields under him as he continued to cherish these simple moments with his class.
After what felt like forever, he got up remembering he still had two students to locate, but his pace slowed, feeling Po's words seep into his soul. His paw ran against the aged bark of untouched trees and bushes that towered past his ears.
And then the sound of trickling water appeared.
"Water?" It sounded crisp and fresh in his ears as he wandered closer and closer to it. He only knew of a select few small rivers and the majority of them were connected to the Dragon Grotto. Past a patch of flowers he could not name was a low narrow river that shimmered in the light of the afternoon. "I could have used this many summers ago." He joked to himself as his paw dipped into cool waters.Splash!Shifu's head rose with a swiftness, his ears on high alert as the sensations of water and smooth rocks rolled over his paws. He stood up, allowing the water to drip from his fingertips at his side.
Not long, did he find Bo Cai relaxing with his black pants legs rolled up as he relaxed in the rushing spring.
He couldn't help but smile at the young man, Bo Cai tended to remind him of himself on most days. His love for Kung Fu was unmatched and his skill made him proud that he decided to stay with their school. 'But I wished he'd relax more…'
Shifu's blue eyes scanned the charming open area of the narrow river, it seemed to run in a circle and straight down to the right of them. "So, this is where you went…" And he took no pleasure in surprising his new student. "It's a very secluded place to meditate, what led you here?"
"Master!" Bo Cai was quick to stand up causing another splash and splatter of water across the low tide, rippling across its width. But he was quick to calm the young man.
He had no time to wait and allow these sorts of anxiety-inducing emotions to settle.
"No, no, sit. This is meant for you, remember? You aren't doing anything wrong." He waved the young wolf off and sat down himself. The old red panda shifted, the feeling of smooth rocks a little alien to his senses but it wasn't too bad. "I was just wondering where you all wandered off to, I was rather surprised to find myself alone in the fields."
Bo Cai slowly did as told, adjusting his pants leg again. "I can't take the credit for finding this place. Chunhua wanted to show me something and well you know how everyone here is," He shrugged, hesitating for a moment before dipping his feet back into the water. "They wanted to see too and then got distracted. Honestly, she should be back by now…"
"Mmmhmm…" Shifu nodded. "Yes, that lines up with what I've seen on my trail this way. But maybe after this class, I'll come back here and enjoy the sights here. It would be a nice change of scenery…" Or good for summer classes, his mind couldn't help but wonder. The mere picture of himself lounging with his feet settled in the water as he taught his students was clear and tempting to his mind.
Bo Cai merely nodded in reply. "Yeah, it reminds me of a river near my home. I couldn't help but stop here and start reminiscing…it made me wonder about some things."
"What sort of things?"
Bo Cai turned away, his tail also moving to the side. "I don't want to sound negative, Master…"
"Is it because of what Po said?" Shifu guessed."Yes," He answered below his breath. "I want to believe it because he's the Dragon Warrior but…we're on completely different levels. Inner peace just seems like a faraway dream for me. I think Nagua could do it but…"
Shifu stood up and patted Bo Cai on the shoulder. "Don't rush it, I know it can seem daunting. But anything truly is possible as long as you believe. And I believe in you, and so does everyone else, we're all walking a similar path and you are not alone. Alright?"
Bo Cai looked toward him with shocked eyes before looking back down at the water. "Yes, Master. Thank you."
"There's no need to thank me. It's my job as your teacher to support you." He patted the young man on the shoulder again before following the river's path toward the final student he needed to check on.
The rocks clattered under his shoes and slipped into the neverending peace of flowing water. Once again, he lost himself to that rhythm, a distant yet repeating note that lulled one into comfort as he walked down this uncharted path, untouched beauty.
"Huh?" He blinked as he saw a small tower of stones that gleamed under the sunlight the trees allowed to escape to this area. They were neatly stacked upon one another and he could tell whoever made it was planning to add more soon.
The end of the path was nearing as the simple trickle and bubbling of river water turned into something more overbearing and thunderous! The trees parted as mist flew up past long distant mountains and the familiar shape of a young tiger looking down upon it all.
Shifu hesitated to walk near the edge as she did. "Chunhua!" He called.
It took her a moment, but her ears perked up along with a sway of her tail. "Shifu, come here!" She motioned for him to come to the edge with her, he could very clearly see the way the winds blew up and flared her fur all over the place. The young tiger only had to wave him over one last time for him to relent.
His vision was downward, and he could only see the dirt-covered ground until it ended and all that was left was a sea of mist into an abyss unknown to his eyes. Trickles of water splashed near his paws as he too leaned over the edge with his student, the wind rushed past his face with a final chilling breath of winter telling them farewell!
He could still hear the rush of the waterfall as they left.
"Did you like it?"
Shifu nodded, still shocked he'd enjoyed living life on the edge such as that, literally too! "Yes, I'm shocked I did, I wasn't even aware the mountains had more waterfalls around here. How did you find it?"
Chunhua rushed ahead to her pile of rocks while answering. "I was just walking about here one day looking for another wide area to train in until I saw something shimmering in the distance." She presented him with some of the stones he'd seen earlier but they were far clearer than the others. "The farther you go, the more clear they are."
"Here, let me help you carry some of those." Shifu didn't even register how light he sounded, but it didn't matter. "Was this the surprise you wanted to show Bo Cai?"
Chunhua nodded. "Yes, this is his new home so I want to show him around when I can."
They both walked with stones in their pockets and some in their paws as the waterfall slowly disappeared, even the steam from below could not be seen past the trees. "I'm glad you two are getting along."
Tigress leaned down to pick up a stick. "I didn't make him wait long, did I?"
"No, he probably overlooked the time passing him by. You picked a lovely spot to rest." His eyes wandered to the river past that stick she held as she traced a line into the dirt. "I remember a game my brothers taught me with racing sticks, who showed you that, Li?" He asked while picking his stray branch up before throwing that short one aside for another.
Chunhua shook her head. "No, Po showed it to me when we were leaving the Valley, do you know what it's called?"
She ended up handing him a sturdy branch instead.
"Thank you, no…" He mulled on that question for a while as two sticks drew lines in different ways yet that all led to the same place. "I never bothered to learn the name, it was…just something we did together on the way home. It's kind of strange to think we played a game without a name for so long…""Maybe you just wanted to?" Chunhua asked as she picked up the pace, walking a couple of steps ahead of him as the river shimmered behind her. "I'm not sure why Po wanted to play when we were leaving but it made me happy, so, isn't that enough?"
Shifu's stick came to a stop as she moved ahead. "I suppose. Is this the conclusion you've come to for your inner peace training aswell?"
He couldn't help but wonder, her mind was always sharp, more than he gave her credit for. She was a constantly moving water wheel with no end in sight for the things she could piece together.
Chunhua shook her head and looked back at him, Bo Cai had yet to notice them in the distance. "No, I haven't thought of anything yet because, in the end, it's not something I desire anymore. My father said something to me this morning that made me realize that."
"And what was that?""That I have so much to balance and yet," She leaned forward, allowing the stick to draw a circle around herself as she brought it behind her back. "I don't feel tired at all, if anything it makes me happier than I've ever been. And if that's not peace, I'm not sure what it could feel like."
She turned abruptly to Bo Cai, the wind picking the pace up gradually as it brushed her green hanfu shirt up and down.
"I'd rather help everyone else to their desired paths, for all my wishes have come true." These were her last words on the topic before she ran ahead to meet Bo Cai who was now stretching from sitting too long on the rocks and greeted her warmly.
The wind brushed past him at that moment, leaves and flower petals passing him by as he watched his two students race with sticks ahead of him. His paw grasped that stick tightly. "Hmmm, a flower bringing warmth and peace to those around them, scattering their wishes to the winds…"
Shifu followed behind them with his stick in tow.
"How poetic."
The reflection of peace and wishes.
