Ties of Trust and Healing
Marinette sits in class, her face etched with worry. It's been nearly two weeks since the last Akuma attack and a nagging sense of guilt gnaws at her. During their last showdown, she made the tough call to send Chat Noir straight home instead of their usual post-battle patrol. At the time, it felt like a rational decision, but as days passed without him showing up at her place, a sinking feeling took root in her gut.
Guilt courses through Marinette's veins as she recalls Chat Noir's love for being a superhero. He had once confided in her, expressing his desire to spend a day as a superhero without the weight of his civilian identity. She knows how much it means to him and now with him missing in action, her heart aches with a mix of worry and longing. Every corner of her life feels incomplete without his infectious laughter. She can't shake off the feeling that something is wrong.
Alya, sitting next to her, notices Marinette's troubled expression. Sensing her friend's unease, she leans closer and whispers, "Marinette, what's bothering you? You seem really worried."
Marinette lets out a sigh, her worry evident in her voice. "It's Chat Noir. He hasn't shown up for our weekly patrol and it's been nearly a fortnight since I saw him last. I've been out looking for him, but I can't find him anywhere."
Alya's brow furrows with concern. "Marinette, from what I've witnessed in the last fight, Chat Noir looked pretty beaten up from Shawowstrike. He's probably just at home nursing a few bruises."
Marinette's eyes widen in horror as the realisation hits her. "Oh my God! You're right, Alya. I completely forgot about the timing. He must have detransformed before I could fix everything. What if he's hurt and I didn't even realise it? What if he's in hospital and can't transform to get a message to me? It's all my fault!"
Alya places a comforting hand on Marinette's shoulder, offering reassurance. "Take a deep breath, Marinette. It's not your fault, okay? You were having a really stressful day even before the Akuma showed up. Chat Noir will understand."
Marinette's gaze lowers, her eyes watery. "Chat Noir is already having a hard time trusting Ladybug's judgement after you created the illusion. I don't want to give him another reason not to trust me.
Alya's expression softens with understanding as she listens to Marinette's words. Realising the full weight of her friend's concern, she reaches out and gently squeezes Marinette's hand. "Marinette, I know how important Chat Noir's trust is to you but remember, trust is built on honesty and understanding; if you explain what happened, he will understand. He knows you would never intentionally put him in harm's way."
Marinette sniffles, wiping away a stray tear. "You're right, I need to talk to him and explain everything; I just hope he can forgive me."
Alya gives Marinette an encouraging smile. "He will, Marinette. You two have a strong bond and you've always been there for each other. Trust takes time, but true friendships can withstand challenges. Don't underestimate the strength of your connection."
The bell rings, signalling the end of the class. Marinette and Alya rise from their seats and wait for the class to file out.
"Wait, Adrien didn't show again?" Marinette asks, her brows furrowed.
Nino grabs his bag, slinging it over his shoulder. "Tell me about it! My boy has barely texted me over the last week."
Ayla thinks back, "He didn't seem too well a couple of weeks ago. It's hard to believe he actually came to school in that state! The nurse had no option but to send him home and he hasn't returned since."
"Is he okay?" Marinette asks.
"He said he sustained an injury during one of his fencing tournaments." Nino elaborates.
"And he didn't tell his father about it?" Marinette exclaims in disbelief.
Nino shrugs, "either that or his father is completely oblivious."
"Well, if he can't come to us, it's our duty as his best friends to go to him," Alya says, her stance determined.
As the class empties, Marinette, Alya, and Nino make their way to Adrien's house. They ring the doorbell and the door opens to reveal Natalie, Gabriel Agreste's assistant. She stands tall with a composed expression, exuding professionalism.
"Hello, Marinette, Alya, Nino," Natalie greets them, her voice steady and polite. "How may I assist you today?"
Marinette takes a deep breath, mustering her courage. "Hi, Natalie. We came to check on Adrien. Is he home? We're really worried about him."
Natalie's gaze softens slightly as she observes Marinette's genuine concern. "Adrien is resting in his room, but he needs his privacy to recover. Mr. Agreste emphasised the importance of maintaining a quiet environment."
Marinette steps forward, her voice filled with sincerity. "I understand Natalie, but we're his closest friends and we care deeply about Adrien's well-being. We just want to see him for a few minutes, to let him know we're here and to offer our support. It would mean a lot to us and it might lift his spirits."
Natalie hesitates for a moment, contemplating Marinette's words. She understands the bond between Adrien and his friends and recognizes the value of their presence. After a moment of consideration, she nods. "Very well, I will make an exception this time. But please keep the visit brief and ensure that Adrien gets the rest he needs."
The trio smile, their hearts overjoyed. Natalie gestures for them to follow her, leading the way to Adrien's room. She stops outside the door, her expression composed once more. "I'll wait outside. Please remember to keep the noise to a minimum."
Marinette, Alya, and Nino nod in understanding, conveying their gratitude once again. "Of course Natalie, we'll be considerate."
With Natalie waiting outside, the three friends enter Adrien's room, finding him lying on his bed, still sore from his injury. A smile spreads across Adrien's face when he sees them, his eyes lighting up with warmth.
"Dude!" Nino exclaims, offering a fistbump. "How have you been holding up, cooped up in here?"
Adrien chuckles softly and returns the fistbump, appreciating Nino's lightheartedness. "Hey, Nino! It's been tough, but I'm hanging in there. It's definitely been a challenge not being able to leave the mansion, but it's nice to have some company now."
As they settle in Adrien's room, the four friends chat about missed events.
"Ah, dude, for all the weeks for you to be off. It had to be the one where it all went down." Nino says, taking a seat. Adrien, sits up in bed with a quizzical look on his face. "What happened?"
"Ivan tried his hand at making a soufflé, but thanks to the ever-so-wonderful Chloé, he misread the recipe and ended up adding too much baking powder. As a result, his culinary creation went on a wild and uncontrollable rise, culminating in an oven explosion," Nino explains.
Alya, with her usual flair for storytelling, can't help but roll her eyes as she chimes in, "And that's not all! During our science class, Chloé let out a shriek that could wake the dead and the whole class practically jumped out of their seats. Poor Juleka was so startled by the scream, she ended up dropping her chemicals, and next thing we knew, a foam explosion turned our classroom into a bubbly art exhibit!"
Adrien, clearly exasperated by his childhood friend's antics, runs a hand down his face with an audible groan, "Seems like I missed quite the eventful week, didn't I?"
"It took us ages to clean it all up, even with everyone pitching in to help." Marinette states. "Luckily it was the end of the day and we were able to go straight home after."
"Tell me about it girl. We could have really done with Ladybug's miraculous cure for that mess." Alya sighs.
Marinette gives a nervous laugh. "Y-yeah. Too bad the heroes only show up for Akuma attacks, huh?"
Adrien stares Marinette in the eye, as if searching for something. "And sometimes they show up late."
Marinette winces at his words, her mind instantly transporting her back to that fateful day. She vividly recalls being out of town, visiting family and the frustration of being stuck in traffic due to the Akuma attack. But it's the crucial moments of that memory that resurface, filling her with a mix of determination and anguish. Every fibre of her being urged her to spring into action, to become Ladybug in that very moment. But the weight of her secret identity in the presence of other passengers held her back.
However, all her restraint and hesitation vanished when she saw Chat Noir being flung across the bus, his vulnerability striking a nerve within her. It was in that split second that Marinette's instincts took over, overpowering any fear or caution that had held her back until that point. The urgency to reach him, to ensure his safety, consumed her entirely.
As panic escalated inside the bus, desperation gripped her, compelling her to escape and rush to Chat Noir's aid. In her heart, she knew that she had the power to make a difference, to stand by his side and face the danger together. However her parents, aware of Marinette and Chat Noir's relationship but unaware of her superhero persona, sensed her distress and made a decisive move to prevent her from leaving.
Her father's hands firmly held onto Marinette, his grip tight with concern. "Marinette, you can't go out there, it's too dangerous," he pleaded, his voice filled with worry.
Tears welled up in Marinette's eyes as she struggled against her father's hold, her voice filled with desperation. "Please, Dad, let go of me! I have to get to him. Chat Noir needs me. I can help him. I have to help him," she cried out, her voice tinged with determination and anguish.
Her pleas reverberated through the bus, fueled by a love for Chat Noir that transcended the boundaries of her own safety. Yet her parents, driven by their concern for her well-being, stood firm, refusing to let her endanger herself. As panic swept through the bus like wildfire, the driver swiftly responded by opening the automatic doors, granting the passengers an escape route. Sensing her golden opportunity, Marinette summoned her inner resolve, broke free from her father's grip and embarked on a determined sprint for freedom.
"Marinette!" her father shouted, his voice filled with concern and desperation. Caught in the crowd of confused and frightened people, he watched helplessly as his daughter rushed away, leaving him and her worried mother behind.
Marinette's trembling breath interrupts the weight of the memories, causing her to snap back to the present moment. She hastily wipes away her tears, trying to regain her composure.
"Marinette!?" Adrien's voice is filled with concern as he notices her tears. Determination fills his eyes as he attempts to rush to her side, his body still weakened from his injuries causing him to stumble slightly. His shirt not buttoned up, reveals his bandaged torso indicating just how severe his fencing accident really is.
"Woah dude, slow down," Nino intervenes, acting quickly to catch Adrien and steady him. "You're still injured, man; take it easy."
Marinette takes a sharp breath, her eyes wide at seeing Adrien's bandaged and bruised body. Her voice quivers as she addresses him. "I'm... I'm okay, Adrien. I was just remembering the last Akuma fight," she inhales deeply. "I was on the bus that Chat Noir's body flung past. It was a difficult moment, seeing him like that. I was so scared."
Adrien takes Marinette's hand in his. "I'm so sorry Marinette. I- er…I mean he is a superhero, he can take a few hits, he's pretty resilient." He leans in closer and whispers. "After all, Ladybug tends to throw him a lot further when she's angry."
Marinette breath catches in her throat, her eyes dart to him, Adrien offers her a smile, straightening up again.
"Don't worry about him so much and please don't worry about me either." He says, trying to offer comfort.
"We're always here for you, Adrien. We've missed you, and we're glad to see you're on the road to recovery." Alya says, turning the subject back around and away from Marinette.
Adrien's gaze softens as he takes in the concern and love from his friends, he lets go of Marinette's hands, allowing them to fall freely back down to her sides. He nods in appreciation.
"You're right, guys," Adrien admits, a grateful smile forming on his lips. "I'm lucky to have friends like you. Thank you for being here; it means a lot to me."
As the four friends share a moment of silence, a gentle knock on the door interrupts the stillness, signalling Natalie's arrival. The door opens and Natalie steps in, her presence instantly noticed by the group.
"It's time to leave now," Natalie announces, her voice calm and composed. "Adrien is still in the process of recovery and needs his rest."
As the friend group rises to their feet, they lean in over Adrien's bed, sharing one last heartfelt hug before bidding him farewell. As Natalie walks them back down the long empty hallway, she subtly notices their lingering concern from the corner of her eye and takes a thoughtful pause. Sensing the need to provide reassurance, she halts in her tracks, turns herself around, her tone gentle yet unwavering.
"I understand your worries," Natalie begins, her voice filled with a comforting reassurance. "But please rest assured that Adrien's recovery is progressing exceptionally well. The doctors anticipate he will be back on his feet in just a few days. He is receiving the best possible care and has access to all the necessary resources for a swift and thorough recovery."
A glimmer of relief brightens Marinette's eyes, accompanied by a subtle smile. Gratitude fills her voice as she responds, "That's fantastic news, Natalie. We're looking forward to seeing Adrien back in school. Please let him know that we're here for him, every step of the way."
Natalie acknowledges Marinette's words with a nod of appreciation. "I'll be sure to pass along your heartfelt message," she affirms, her commitment evident.
With their worries now eased, the friends exchange their goodbyes once more, their hearts filled with newfound hope.
