Next Day

THE LIVING ROOM filled with sunlight streaming through the windows, casting a warm glow. Caroline, Elena and Bonnie sat on the couch, sipping on their morning lattes. Caroline's eyes darted between concern and mischief while Elena wore a befuddled yet probing expression both directed at a clueless Bonnie.

Breaking the silence, Caroline couldn't resist teasing, "So Bonnie, you had quite the dance partner last night."

Elena chimed in, confusion etched on her face, "Yeah, it's not every day you see sworn enemies in such a compromising way. You two seemed to be in your own little world on the dance floor."

Bonnie blushed slightly but tried to play it cool, answering nonchalantly, "Alright, fine, he asked and I didn't want to blow my cover. It wasn't a big deal."

Caroline raised an incredulous eyebrow at her best friend, "He asked? Just like that? Out of nowhere?"

Bonnie hesitated for a moment, choosing her words carefully, 'Well, he insisted, and when a thousand-year old vampire asks, you tend to go along to not make a scene with mixed company present."

It was Elena's turn to tease, "Dancing or to stare at each other? Because I noticed more flirting than dancing. You two were unquestionably a highlight of the evening."

"Bonnie, Klaus Mikaelson barely smiles, and last night he was practically beaming while dancing with you."

Elena added playfully, "His smile looked like he could light up the Taj Mahal."

Bonnie shook her head, a mix of embarrassment and hidden distress on her face. "I don't know what you two are talking about. It was just a dance, that's all."

Elena and Caroline exchanged amused glances and silently agreed to drop the subject. "Alright, we'll let it go for now." Elena conceded.

"Thank you!" Bonnie breathed a sigh of relief. The three friends shared laughter and jokes as they enjoyed their lighthearted morning over coffee, knowing they had another long and stressful night ahead dealing with the Mikaelson clan.

Just before Elena and Caroline left, Elena turned to Bonnie. "Are you going to be okay with what you have to do tonight?" Bonnie shook her head solemnly.

"I feel bad," Elena admitted. "Elijah figured out a way to save my life, and I just wish I could return the favor. It just doesn't feel right."

After last night, Bonnie knew exactly how she felt. How could one dance change everything, she thought. "Unfortunately, even if there's a possibility, there's no time to figure it out. They're irrevocably bound."

Caroline chose that moment to remind her best friends. "Firstly, Klaus has to be stopped. And secondly, you are not doing this, Esther is."

Elena turned to face Bonnie, hope and concern mixed together in her eyes. "Bonnie, please keep me updated on tonight's spell, okay?" Her voice was gentle but sincere as she asked.

Bonnie nodded, her expression determined. "Of course, Elena. I'll let you know how things go," she replied, her tone reassuring despite the gravity of the situation.

Caroline stepped forward, her presence providing a reassuring anchor in the midst of uncertainty. "It's going to be fine," she said.

The trio shares goodbye hugs with each other.

After teasing Klaus, it was mid-morning when Rebekah made her way downstairs from a much-needed nap.

In the study, Kol glanced up in time to notice her. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in," he drawled in his unmistakable European accent, eyes twinkling with amusement. "Got in pretty late, I see, sister. Were you with that strapping fella….Matt, was it?"

Rebekah turned her attention to her impish brother, her steps slowing as she indulged him with an exasperated sigh. Her gaze locked onto Kol's; her tone laced with an edge of warning. "Oh, Kol," she purred, her voice honeyed and dangerous. "If you don't shut your mouth, the next thing to come out of it will be your teeth."

Klaus sat behind the imposing mahogany desk, his iPad in hand. He briefly looked up, a sly smirk dancing across his lips. He pretended not to care about the argument between his siblings but couldn't help but let out a chuckle.

"Don't start, Nik." Rebekah chided.

"I didn't say anything." Klaus said defensively.

"I'm bored. Our sister is a strumpet….but at least she's having fun. I need entertainment." Kol complained.

"What trouble are you planning for today?" Rebekah asked.

Grinning, Kol replied, "I was thinking of starting with some day drinking."

"What are you waiting for? Go on, have at it." Klaus encouraged.

"It's not fun to go alone. Care to join me, brother?"

Klaus looked a bit intrigued. "Day drinking, you say? Well I suppose I could use a distraction today. I didn't have nearly enough to drink last night, what with you trying to murder Rebekah's date."

At the reminder, Rebekah glared at Kol. "Yes, please go, this house has enough men rolling around in it."

"Just like you, Bekah," Kol jokes, earning a chuckle from Klaus. Rebekah responded by flinging her shoe, which found its mark as it smacked Kol on the head.

As Kol and Klaus were getting ready to leave for their day of mischief, Elijah made his entrance into the room.

"And where do you two think you're off to so early?" he inquired.

"Day drinking, Elijah,' Kol says cheerily. "Care to join us?" he asks, casting a sour look Rebekah's way.

"As tempting as that sounds, I have other matters to attend to,"Elijah mutters.

Just as Kol and Klaus leave the room, Rebekah's next words are directed at their backs. "Good riddance, both of you!"

"Rebekah," he greeted with a somber tone.

Rebekah couldn't help but notice his mood and remarked. "Not you too Elijah." She hoped her typically mild-mannered brother wasn't ganging up on her as well.

He exhaled. "I'm worried about mother. Have you noticed her strange behavior?"

"She's been dead for a thousand years. What's strange for her?" Rebekah responded, not completely comprehending her brother's meaning.

Elijah showed her the burned sage. " She was doing a privacy spell," he explained. "I think she's up to something."

She wore a dubious expression, doubtful of their mother's actual motives. "Why don't you ask Finn? He's been doting on her," she suggested.

Elijah sighed, his brow furrowing with concern. "I don't trust Finn," he informed her.

"As far as mother is concerned, she loves us and just wants to make her family whole. Don't go looking for trouble Elijah. Just be happy for once." She kissed her older brother on the cheek, her affectionate gesture a stark contrast to their conversation. "I'm going to go take a shower."

Rebekah left the room, her footsteps echoing faintly in the corridor. Elijah remained behind, the weight of his suspicious thoughts pressing upon him. He wasn't convinced that their mother was as pure as Rebekah believed. There was an unsettling feeling gnawing at the edges of his mind, a sense that there was more to their mother's actions than met the eye.

With a determined look in his eyes, Elijah knew there was only one person who could answer the nagging questions and quell the growing unease.

The doorbell's chime resounded through the Gilbert residence, startling Elena. She glanced at her laptop's clock, puzzled as she hadn't expected to hear from Caroline or Bonnie so soon. She opened the door to find Elijah standing there, his face filled with a look of determination.

Elena greeted him, surprised, "Elijah? What are you doing here?"

Smiling, he replied, "Hello, Elena. I hope you don't mind me dropping by unannounced. I was wondering if you would indulge me by accompanying me on a little excursion."

Elena hesitated but was intrigued by his mysterious proposition. "Sure."

Elijah drove her to the woods, parked his Mercedes, and turned off the engine. Sunlight pierced through the trees as they ventured further, eventually discovering an old, ivy-covered structure.

Elena couldn't help but wonder, "What is this place?"

He explained, "Below us is a cavern I used to play in as a boy. It connects to a system of tunnels that stretch across the entire area. It holds many memories, some good, some not so much." He then shared a dark story of treachery that made Elena uncomfortable.

She sensed a shift in his attitude, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. "I should probably go home."

Elijah continued, "I admire you, Elena. You remind me of qualities I valued long before my mother turned us. It's not in your nature to be deceitful, and yet when I asked you about your meeting with my mother last night… you lied to my face."

Elena defended herself, "That's not true. I told you that all your mother wanted was a new start."

His expression changed, and his eyes seemed to glow with intensity as he accused. "I can hear your heartbeat. It jumps when you're being dishonest. You lied to me at the ball and you're lying now. Tell me…..the truth."

"I never wanted this to happen."

"What to happen, Elena?" Elijah pressed with malice.

"We were told that what lay inside the coffin was going to kill Klaus. Discovering that it was your mother left us confused. Since her return, she's expressed that she only wants family unity. I thought she might be able to help me deal with Klaus when she asked to speak with me. However, her intentions go beyond just ending Klaus's life," she clarified.

Elijah realized the truth very quickly. "She wants to kill us all, doesn't she?" He didn't wait for her response, as she had essentially confirmed it. Fueled by anger at his mother's betrayal, he exclaimed, "Fuck! She wants to undo the evil she created."

"I'm so sorry, Elijah. I wish there was something I could do to help."

"You know, one thing I've learned in my time on this earth… be careful what you wish for." Taking a step back, he suddenly stamped his foot on the ground in an unexpected motion.

Panicking, Elena asked, "Elijah, what are you doing?"

All of a sudden, there was a thunderous boom that echoed through the air, shaking the ground and causing a massive crack to split it in half. With his vampire speed, he grabbed Elena and dropped her into an underground tunnel-like cavern.

"Please, Elijah, I'm sorry… please don't leave me," she begged.

"Sorry, Elena. I have to do what's best for my family." He quickly took off, leaving her completely alone in the dark, damp subterranean cave.

Luckily, it was still daylight. Elena struggled to climb out of the crater, but the walls were too steep and crumbly. She grabbed her phone from her back pocket, searching hopelessly for a cell signal.

'Great,' she thought, ' can't wait to hear Damon bitch about how stupid I've been,' rolling her eyes. She put her useless phone back in her pocket and started to venture further into the tunnel, searching for a possible exit.

Spotted…..Klaus and Kol Mikaelson at the Mystic Grill, an unmissable duo. They sat side by side at the bar, an aura of devilry surrounding them.

The brothers wasted no time, downing their drinks as if they were on a mission. Their laughter echoed through the establishment, growing louder with each passing minute. Behind the bar, the inventory visibly dwindled, much to the chagrin of the waitstaff.

Klaus, ever the social butterfly, scanned the nearest table and locked eyes with a group of college-aged patrons. With a charismatic grin, he leaned over and beckoned them. "Join us, my friends! Drinks on me."

The group hesitated briefly but couldn't resist the allure of the Mikaelsons. They abandoned their table and gathered around the bar, eager to partake in the reckless revelry.

As the night wore on, Klaus and Kol's antics only escalated. They danced atop the bar, encouraging their young companions to participate as they expertly poured drinks into each other's mouths, and charmed everyone in their path. The Mystic Grill would never forget the night the Mikaelson brothers turned the bar into a wild, unforgettable party.

At the burial ground outside the Old Witch House, Bonnie and Abby approached the ominous dwelling. As they drew closer, Esther and Finn emerged to greet them.

"Hello again, my sisters. Thank you for coming," Esther greeted warmly. "I could think of no better allies than the Bennett witches after everything that's happened over the past two weeks." She grinned, fixing an impressed gaze on Bonnie. "Especially you, my dear girl. I just learned you bravely faced Niklaus. That's no small feat."

Bonnie's eyes darted to the ground at the mention of his name, her mind still grappling with her unsettling attraction to him.

Abby felt an unexplained tension in the air, adding to her unease. She was eager to complete the ritual and hopefully be done with the Mikaelsons for good, so she redirected the conversation. "So, you mentioned channeling our ancestors, right?" Abby inquired.

"Yes," Esther replied, her gaze shifting to Abby. "As I said the night before, I'll draw from the entirety of the Bennett bloodline. The connection grants me great power, though it's somewhat challenging to maintain. That's why I need you ... .mother and daughter, the manifested bloodline."

Abby and Bonnie exchanged a knowing look, recognizing the unspoken truth about their bond.

Their focus returned to Esther when she spoke. "Tonight, we shall bring peace to the spirits of nature we serve, and for that, I will be eternally grateful," Esther exuded seriousness and urgency as they prepared for the upcoming ceremony.

As Elena delved deeper into the tunnels, darkness closed in around her. Her phone's feeble light served as her guide, but fear and frustration gnawed at her. She knew Elijah had trapped her here as a bargaining chip. Suddenly, Rebekah materialized from the shadows, startling Elena.

"Leaving already?" Rebekah asked, blocking her path.

Elena retorted with disdain in her voice, "What're you doing here?"

Rebekah grinned wickedly, "Not much, unless you try to run, in which case I get to kill you." Elena visibly tensed at Rebekah's threat which gave her immense satisfaction.

Stefan burst into the Salvatore mansion, panic in his voice as he rushed toward the living room. "I can't find her anywhere. I - "

He abruptly stopped in his tracks, his eyes widening as he found Damon standing with his back towards him, staring down at none other than Elijah, who was sitting in an overstuffed chair by the fireplace.

Damon glanced over his shoulder; his expression grim. "This son a bitch has Elena," he informed his brother.

Unfazed by the insult, Elijah civilly pointed out, "Actually she's with Rebekah. As you can imagine, my sister's just dying to tear her throat out. So, if you want to save Elena's life, I need you to help me stop my mother."

Damon clenches his fists, attempting to rein in his anger, and when he finally manages to do so, he quips, "I'm a little embarrassed to admit, but when it comes to killing thousand-year-old resurrected witches, I'm a little rusty." Damon adds sarcastically, measuring a small gap between his thumb and index finger.

"Yes, unfortunately, even when killed, my mother doesn't seem to want to stay dead. Not with the spirits of nature at her side." Elijah explained.

"So what are we supposed to do?" Stefan asked, tired of beating around the bush.

"The witches that released my mother…she's drawing her power from their bloodline. That line needs to be broken," Elijah said.

Perplexed, Stefan asked, "Broken?"

"Yeah, he means," Damon ran his thumb across his neck to gesture Elijah's intent.

"You want us to kill them?" Stefan asked, stating the obvious. In response, Damon shot him a withering glare that clearly conveyed, are you kidding me?

"You know I'd do it myself, but…I've absolutely no idea where they are. Besides…seeing me they'd immediately know my intent. They won't expect to be harmed by the likes of you. In any case, you have until six minutes after nine to find them."

"Oh, how super specific of you," Damon snarked.

Elijah got up, buttoned his suit jacket, preparing to leave. "By 9:07 pm, the moon will be full, my mother will have the power she needs to kill me and my family. If you do not stop her before then….well." He paused to get his point across, then continued, "Rebekah will kill Elena. So we all have our timeline. I suggest you get started."

He walked past the stunned brothers with a conniving smirk on his face, leaving Stefan and Damon seething with frustration.

"We're fucked," Damon said.

"Yeah, tell me about it," Stefan griped.

Rebekah, her cell phone in hand stood in front of Elena with a mischievous grin. "Alright, love, now look into the camera and say cheese!" she instructed.

Elena's frustration bubbled up. "What are you doing?" she asked.

"Something to inspire your boyfriends." Rebekah replied with a smirk.

Elena prodded, "Did you volunteer, or did Elijah send you to babysit me?"

Ignoring the insinuation that she was somehow her brother's lackey; Rebekah didn't bother to answer.

They exchanged a few verbal barbs, tension mounting. Though Elena felt fear lurking beneath her bravado, she soldiered on. "You know it must be exhausting trying to gain everyone's approval all the time. How's that working out for you?" she taunted.

"I don't know, Elena but perhaps you can share how exhausting it must be to hop from one brother to the other." Rebekah retorted. "Even a young thing like yourself, it must be exhausting. Care to share your secrets?"

Rebekah's words hit a nerve, leaving Elena wide-eyed and speechless. When she responded, emphasizing the word 'old,' she fired back, "You know, for someone as old as you, you really can be a petty bitch."

"Enough with these childish games," Rebekah spat, realizing it was beneath her to trade insults with a mere human.

She could have easily slaughtered Elena and no one would be the wiser. A cunning smile crept onto her face at the thought. "Do you think I want to spend what could be the last few hours of my life having idle chit-chat with a girl who literally stabbed me in the back? Of course not. But for some reason, everybody seems to want to bend over backwards to save your life, which is incredibly annoying, but makes you the perfect hostage. So, why don't you sit down and shut up before I ruin everything by ripping your head off."

Without another word spoken, Elena reluctantly sat down.

With a blood bag in his hand, Stefan carefully opens it, just as he's about to take a sip, Damon strides in, his frustration palpable.

"Clock's ticking, brother. You gonna help me brainstorm or are you too busy fixing yourself a snack?"

"We need to call Bonnie. There's got to be a way for her to stop Esther from channeling all that power."

Damon blew out a frustrated breath. "A. What if she's with Esther? B. What if she can't cut her off? C. I don't know how any of this stuff works, and D. Neither do you!"

Stefan raises an eyebrow, not surprised by Damon's skepticism. "You got a better plan?"

"Worst case scenario, simple mechanics. Can't draw power from a dead battery." Damon suggests, then grabs the blood bag from Stefan, sipping greedily before returning it.

"Kill them," Stefan replies plainly.

"If it comes to that."

"There's got to be another way." Stefan refuses to believe that is their only option.

"This could work out in our favor if we execute it with the right timing," Damon paces with anticipation, clearly believing in his plan. " What if I told you I had a less diabolical plan? He holds up a silver dagger, catching Stefan's attention.

Doubtful, Stefan continued to question him. "You want to dagger Elijah?"

Damon grinned, undeterred by his cynicism. "They're all linked. One goes down, they all go down. The witches live, Elena's safe, problem solved."

Considering the potential consequences, Stefan shot back. "We don't know if that'll affect Klaus."

Damon leans in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "Oh contraire, my dear gullible brother. Ironically, Klaus isn't our current problem. This is our opportunity to kill multiple birds with one stone."

"The dagger is lethal to any vampire who uses it." Stefan reminded him.

Damon grins devilishly. "Well, I just so happen to know someone crazy enough to give it a shot."

Finally relenting, realizing Damon might be onto something. "Okay, care to share your so-called illustrious plan?"

Alaric noticed them about an hour ago and the staff mentioned they'd been there for most of the afternoon, spontaneously sharing various bits of information. It was around 8:00 pm, and Alaric couldn't help but think - ' good old-fashioned gossip is eternal ... .disadvantage of small town living.'

He was supposed to be on a date with Meredith, but Damon's call about Elena's kidnapping had forced him to change his plans. He had no choice but to enlist Meredith's help.

Their newfound companions had departed some time ago. Alaric sat covertly watching them, contemplating how to get Kol alone when his phone chimed. A few minutes passed, anxious he hastily reached for his phone and sent a quick text to Caroline, urging her to hurry. Moments later, she enters the grill, catching Klaus's attention.

Klaus wasted no time in abandoning Kol, standing there like a lost puppy. He was relieved upon her arrival; this was his chance to ask about Bonnie. Even though she was not aware of it, she had consumed his thoughts, and the thought of her in his embrace was slowly driving him insane…he wanted more.

With their plan in place, all that remained was to set the trap and wait for Kol to exhibit his typical obnoxious behavior.

On one hand, Kol felt slighted by Klaus's sudden dismissal. However his disappointment quickly faded when he spotted a gorgeous brunette at the pool tables. It seemed like his night had just taken an interesting turn.

Outside the Old Witch House, under the pale moonlight, the three witches gathered around a meticulously drawn pentagram of salt. Finn, his hands steady, began to light the torches placed at each point of the sacred symbol.

"The pentagram represents our connection to magic. The salt is the symbol of the earth," Esther explained.

Curiosity piqued, Bonnie asked, "And the torches?"

Esther's gaze flickered toward the five flickering flames. "Five torches, one for each of my children."

Abby, fascinated by the mysterious ritual unfolding before her, couldn't help but ask, "So, what's the ritual you're performing?"

"As the witch who cast the spell that made them vampires, I also possess the power to reverse it," Esther revealed. "Once they become human again, they can be killed. Bound as one my brave Finn will be the sacrifice. With his death theirs will follow."

Abby still couldn't believe it but was impressed by the magnitude of such a sacrifice. She turned to Finn, a mix of awe and concern in her voice. "And you're just willing to die for this?"

Finn met her gaze with a calm determination. "My mother's releasing me from an eternity of misery and shame. It's not really a sacrifice."

Kol made his way over to the attractive woman at the pool tables. 'Easy prey,' he thought, 'like stealing candy from a baby.' As he approached, he inquired, "What's your name, love?"

But she shot back with a curt, "Beat it."

Kol persisted, turning on the charm, "Let's try that again. I'll start. I'm Kol?"

"I said, beat it." Meredith replied, pretending to be uninterested. She needed to make it seem like this wouldn't be a walk in the park.

Just then, a male voice chimed in from behind, "Are you hard of hearing? The lady told you to fuck off," Alaric warned.

Kol spun around, ready with a retort, "And how about you fu-"

Before he could finish his sentence, Alaric swiftly pulled a dagger and plunged it into Kol's chest. "Next time, take a hint, asshole."

Kol crumpled to the floor, instantly beginning to desiccate. Luckily, their altercation went unnoticed by the rest of the bar patrons.

With her back against the cavern walls, Rebekah gasps for breath, clutching her chest in agony, her face contorted in pain, and she suddenly cries out. Her eyes roll back and she collapses to the ground lifeless.

Elena seizes the opportunity and takes off running past Rebekah's lifeless body.

Finn standing guard clutches his chest, his complexion turning ashen. He stumbles backward, trying to maintain his composure, but his strength wanes. He crumbles onto the ground.

Esther's eyes widened in panic, "Something's wrong…."

Outside the grill at the town square, Caroline continued to engage Klaus in conversation, skillfully diverting his attention from the bar. But Klaus, being a perceptive hybrid, starts to feel the effects of the dagger as it affects his linked connection with Kol. Klaus shoots out of his seat. His gaze locked onto Caroline and his demeanor turned hostile.

"What is it?" Caroline asked, her voice filled with nervousness at this sudden change in behavior.

Klaus, narrowing his eyes with anger, suspecting Caroline is hiding something, grabs her forcefully by the arms. "What…did…you…do?" he demanded, leaving no room for argument.

Caroline, determined to maintain her innocent facade as a decoy, stood her ground. "I didn't do anything. Stop it!" she ordered, her voice shaking.

Feeling the ultimate betrayal, "I no longer trust you, Caroline."

Just then, concern for his little brother surged through Klaus. He shouted, "Kol" and bolted away like lightning.

In the dimly lit alley behind the Mystic Grill, Alaric and Meredith exchanged a wary glance as they prepared to hand Kol over to Damon and Stefan. Klaus rushed over, undaggered Kol, and delivered a forceful blow that knocked Alaric against the wall. Stefan attempted to attack Klaus, but with a hard shove, Klaus sent him flying across the alley, knocking him unconscious. As he sees his injured brother lying unconscious, Klaus's vampire-like face twisted with rage, and his golden eyes blazing like infernos, his rage reaches its peak.

"I should've killed you months ago," Klaus seethed, fixing Damon with a deadly stare.

Damon met Klaus's threat with a brave defiance. "Do it," he challenged, a smirk playing on his lips. "That's not gonna stop Esther from killing you," he added, his words designed to knock the wind out of Klaus.

Klaus took menacing steps toward Damon, his hostility simmering just below the surface. "What did you say about my mother?" he growled.

"You didn't know I was friends with your mummy? Yeah we have a lot in common. She hates you as much as I do." Damon instigated.

Elijah appeared at the top of the stairs and intervened. "Leave him," he ordered.

"What?" Klaus groused.

Elijah walks down the stairs towards Damon holding his phone. "We still need them, Niklaus."

Klaus turned his burning gaze to his brother. "What did mother do?" He demanded, the silence hanging heavy in the air.

Elijah hesitated for a moment before diverting his attention to the eldest Salvatore. "You tell me where the witches are," he threatened, "or I'll have my sister kill Elena right now."

Damon looks up at the clock tower, "You told me we had until after nine."

"I'm sure Rebekah would be more than happy to start her work early."

With no other choice, Damon relented, revealing the witches' location.

"I suggest you go handle what we discussed," Elijah ordered. Kol had recovered, and the three Originals quickly took off to find their mother.

Rebekah revives and sees that Elena is missing. Elena ran throughout the tunnels, glancing back occasionally to make sure Rebekah wasn't following.

"Run along, then. Hide if you must. I could easily catch you, but where's the fun in that?" Rebekah yells.

Elena trips and falls.

"Not sure why I'm feeling under the weather. Must be your boys trying to find a loophole. Won't matter."

Once Elena recovers she frantically searches for a hiding spot and stumbles upon an alcove, jumps inside which lay an empty coffin - Esther's coffin. Breathing heavily, Elena hid behind it, trying to keep quiet, but failing due to her racing heart.

"I can hear your heartbeat, Elena," Rebekah calls out. "There's no use hiding."

As Rebekah approached the narrow entrance, she attempted to pass through it but found herself unable to breach the magical barrier protecting Esther's coffin. An exasperated growl slipped from her mouth.

Elena breathed a sigh of relief "Seems like you've hit a bit of snag, huh?" she taunted.

"You little bitch!" Rebekah snapped glaring at her.

Finn stood at the center of the pentagram, a creepy feeling came over him as he heard his brothers approaching. He quickly alerted Esther, "They're coming mother!"

Esther's panicked voice quivered, "No, it's too soon; the moon is not high enough." She turned to Abby and Bonnie urgently instructing them, "Go…hide, quickly!" Bonnie and Abby retreated into the house.

As her sons, Elijah, Kol and Klaus approached, they were met with a mystical circle etched with intricate symbols. "My sons come forward." Esther beckoned from within the circle. Her eyes held a potent mix of determination and sorrow, a reflection of the immense burden she had carried for a millennium.

Finn, solemn and unwavering in his loyalty to his mother, reached out for her hand, holding it tightly by her side without hesitation. "Stay behind me," he ordered.

"It's okay, they can't enter," she whispered.

Elijah, with his dignified poise, stood with his hands in his pockets, conflict evident in his expression as he observed the scene.

Kol eyed the magical circumference with disdain and attempted to break through the barrier, only to be met with a fiery rebuke. Frustration and anger washed over him as he stepped back. "That's lovely. We're stuck out here while the favorite son plays sacrificial lamb. How pathetic you are, Finn," he spat.

Klaus wore a scowl, his wolf-like eyes flashing a bright yellow, betraying the intensity of his emotions as he weighed in the severity of the circumstances.

"Be quiet,Kol. Your brother knows virtue, something you cannot even imagine," Esther snapped.

"Whatever you think of us, killing your own children would be an atrocity," Elijah implored.

"My only regret is that I did not let you die a thousand years ago."

Klaus finally intervened, his patience running thin. "Enough! All this talk is boring me. End this now, mother or I'll send you back to hell." He threatened.

The tension in the clearing intensifies as the brothers face-off with their mother.

With a calm and measured voice she addresses her sons, "For a millennium I've been forced to watch you, feel the pain of every victim, suffer while you shed blood. Even you, Elijah with your claim to nobility, you're no better. All of you are a curse on this earth."

As Abby and Bonnie explored the eerie house, Abby couldn't help but shiver. "This place has some serious vibes," she remarked.

"The witch spirits will protect us from the Originals, but we should get into the basement," Bonnie whispered as she felt a menacing presence nearby.

Abby, taking in the rundown surroundings turned to Bonnie. ""Hey, I just wanted to let you know that being here with you, spending time together and getting to know each other, has been the best thing I've done in a long time."

Unshed tears welled up in Bonnie's eyes and she hugged her mother tightly. "Mine too. Thank you for coming back with me."

"It's the least I can do, baby girl," Abby replied. After a few sentimental moments, they broke apart.

Down the hall, Abby was distracted by a glowing light, while Bonnie proceeded to the basement. Alone in the lower level, Bonnie heard a shout and called out, "Abby!"

Suddenly Stefan appeared in front of Bonnie, startling her. "Stefan, what's going on?"

"They took Elena. They're gonna kill her unless we stop Esther," Stefan urgently informed her.

Bonnie sighed in distress. "God, Stefan, I- can't stop her. She's channeling us."

"Bonnie if you can't stop her…I have to find another way," resolve in his eyes.

"Stefan no," she pleaded, her desperation growing. She turned to make a run for it but Stefan easily blocked her path.

"What are you going to do?" Bonnie asked, fear evident in her voice. "Even if you kill us, Esther's channeling every witch in our ancestry, living and dead."

"Esther's drawing from the witches and the only way to cut her off is if one of you is no longer a witch."

Realization dawned on Bonnie's face instantly.

Damon quietly crept upon Abby, grabbed her from behind, and pierced his wrist with his fangs, feeding her his blood. "This'll only hurt for a second," he whispered before snapping her neck, allowing her lifeless body to fall to the ground.

In the blink of an eye, Esther's senses heightened, and whispered, "I feel the witches abandoning me." Panic gripped her as she mentally cried out - ' no, sisters, please don't forsake me into the ethereal unknown.'

Finn's voice trembled with worry as he questioned, "Mother?"

The torches flared up wildly, and in that chaotic moment, Finn instinctively grabbed Esther, pulling her close while the brothers retreated from the sudden burst of flames.

Then, as abruptly as it began, the torches died out, leaving Elijah, Klaus and Kol standing in stunned disbelief. Finn and Esther had vanished without a trace.

"You can come out now, it seems your boys handled the problem." Rebekah informed Elena.

Elena's eyebrows furrowed in concern, asked, "How did they do that?"

"Damon turned Bonnie's mother into a vampire," she replied.

Shocked and disgusted, unable to believe what she had just heard. "What?"

Rebekah continued, "Quite clever, actually. They needed to sever the witch line, and well, you can't be a witch and a vampire. In any case you're free to go." Rebekah stepped back, giving Elena permission to leave.

Numb with shock, despair and grief Elena felt like she was having an out-of-body experience as she walked woodenly out of the cave. Before leaving, Rebekah added, "Oh one more thing…you don't deserve such a good friend as Bonnie." With that, Rebekah flicked her long, beautiful blonde hair, shoulder-checked Elena on the way out using her vampire speed to disappear.

Immediately following Damon's terrifying attack, Bonnie's heart raced as she drove Abby home. She quickly texted Caroline, who happened to be on their porch when she arrived.

Caroline sprang into action as soon as she received Bonnie's message. She rushed to the car and helped Bonnie get Abby into the house, gently guiding her into the guest room and making her as comfortable as possible.

Bonnie could feel her own guilt weighing on her shoulders as Abby was lost in transition, unaware of the danger that had befallen her. She sat next to her, holding her hand tightly, attempting to keep it together for Abby's sake.

Caroline quietly discussed their attempts to avert such a catastrophe as Bonnie started to recount the facts of the night's atrocity. Both of them were aware of the threat Damon and Stefan posed, particularly when it came to sacrificing loved ones for Elena's sake.

Knowing that her grieving friend would have a difficult night, Caroline excused herself to make some herbal tea after noticing the distress in Bonnie's eyes. Her friend needed to process and find a way to handle the regret that threatened to consume her.

Bonnie was still sitting with her mother when Elena arrived, concern, remorse and sadness etched across her face. As soon as she heard the news, she rushed over desperate to console her best friend. At the front door, Caroline stopped her, stood firm and refused to let her inside the house. As they stood face to face at the threshold, Caroline's unflinching resolve met Elena's sorrowful eyes.

"She doesn't want to see you right now," Caroline said.

"Please, just let me talk to her," Elena pleaded, her voice filled with worry.

"Abby's in transition. It's gonna be really hard over the next few days. Bonnie needs time, she's devastated right now and pushing her won't help." Caroline explained, concern for her friend evident on her face.

"She's always been there for me, Caroline," Elena implored. "But I can't just do nothing. She's hurting and I want to be there for her."

Caroline let out a heavy sigh, torn between protecting Bonnie and understanding Elena's concerns. "I'm sorry, Elena. I know that you wanna help but put yourself in her shoes. Everything that happened tonight was to save you. And that's okay because she loves you so much. But somehow, she's always the one who gets hurt. Sometimes we need to respect our friends' wishes. Give her the space and when she's ready, she'll come to you."

Elena nodded understandingly, tears welling in her eyes. "Yeah, you're right. I just …just tell her that I love her, okay?"

"Of course, I will," Caroline assured her.

They exchanged a somber glance, both aware of the potential consequences their conversation might have on their relationship.

Elena turned and walked away, leaving Bonnie standing in the hallway, her face streaked with tears. She overheard the entire conversation and couldn't contain her emotions. She squeezed her eyes shut, wrapping her arms tightly around herself, seeking solace.

Bonnie blamed herself, certain that her relentless pursuit of eliminating Klaus from Elena's life had resulted in Abby's misfortune. What happened to her could've been avoidable.

'Why am I the only one that suffers?'' Bonnie wondered silently.

Rebekah entered their home, her voice filled with frustration, "Where the bloody hell is everyone?"

Elijah stood by the window, his gaze distant and troubled. "It's over Rebekah."

Confusion crossed her face. "Where's mother?"

"We have no mother, only Esther and she was right." Elijah pointed out with a heavy sigh.

"What do you mean?" Rebekah prodded.

"All my talk of virtue when it suits my needs, I kill, maim and torment. Even today I terrorized an innocent," he admitted, his voice filled with remorse.

Rebekah scoffed. "Elena is hardly innocent."

"And I used your hatred of her to get what I wanted. I wielded you like I would a sword, my dear sister." He confessed.

"You did it to protect us, Elijah and rightly so. We deserve to live. We are better than they are," she assured him.

"Are we? Mother made us vampires. She didn't make us monsters. We did that to ourselves," he acknowledged, finally understanding what their mother had detested about her own children. He walked away leaving Rebekah at a loss for words.

Klaus was burning drawings in the fireplace when Rebekah walked in.

"I thought you'd be gone by now. Elijah's leaving. Kol fled, and Esther and Finn vanished."

"I hated you when I learned you killed our mother but I realize now that after a thousand years together as a family you're the only one who never left me," Rebekah admitted.

"Well aren't we a pair?" Klaus sadly jokes. As she handed him her phone, he tease, "Come to brag about your skills as a torturer?"

"There's something I think you need to see." Klaus took the phone and looked at the screen.

"Look at the images on the wall. The natives told the story about our family history. Look at the images on the far wall."

"What is it?" Klaus asked, growing more concerned.

" A native worshiping a white oak tree," she said.

"And? We burnt that tree to the ground," Klaus said dismissively.

Rebekah emphasized, "Look at the markings that precede it that's a native calendar."

With increasing concern, Klaus replied, "This can't be right."

"A white oak tree three hundred years after we fled back to the old world. There must have been a sapling of a new tree to replace the old one. It's not over Nik. That tree could kill us," Rebekah said, leaving them both with the terrifying awareness that there was still a threat out there.

Bonnie went back to the guest room and sat down next to Abby's motionless body, watching for any sign of life returning. Despite the progress they had made in their shaky relationship, things would never be the same. Even if Abby continued to live - they'd run out of time to do all the things they talked about.
