Anytime Poppy sees an opportunity to share her scrapbooks with someone, she never hesitates to take it. She loved showing other trolls, especially the children, the memories she had made and the stories they had to tell.
Right now, she only had one audience member, but that was more than enough. Baby Sunshine was sitting in her lap, pointing excitedly at each page as Poppy told her about some of her favorite adventures that taught her how to be a good queen.
She hadn't planned on saving the best for last, but a page in the very back piqued the baby's curiosity. "What that," she asked, pointing at the illustration. Poppy was standing on the shoulder of a giant gray creature with crooked teeth and pink pigtails. They were both smiling broadly as Poppy hugged them, the letters "BFFs" printed at the top.
"Oh, that's Poppy's best friend, Bridget," she said, "I've told her so much about you. I can't believe I haven't told you about her."
Sunshine looked at Bridget's picture inquisitively, not sure what to think about her yet. "Not a troll," she asked.
"No, she's not a troll," Poppy confirmed, "She's a bergen."
"Ber-gen," Sunshine carefully pronounced; she remembered seeing a picture of a bergen in a book somewhere in Branch's bunker. It was one that he had been meaning to get rid of since relations had changed between them.
"Bergen scary," she whimpered, covering her eyes.
Poppy hugged her protectively, making gentle shushing noises as she tried to calm her fears. "You know what," she said, standing and walking towards her bookshelf, "there once was a time when I thought the same thing." She pulled out a scrapbook titled "Branch and Poppy's Big Adventure."
"Which is why I'm going to tell you the story that started it all."
She sat back down and pulled Sunny back onto her lap, but she didn't open the boom right away. "There's some things you need to know first before I begin," she said. "Long ago, the bergens were really grumpy creatures that didn't know how to sing, dance, or even hug. And they were convinced that the only way that they could be happy…was by eating a troll."
Sunshine buried her face in Poppy's shoulder, shaking her head as she began to cry. "I don't like this story, Poppy!"
"No no no, Sunny, it's okay," Poppy said; she was trying to spare as little graphic detail as possible. "I promise this is not a scary story. If it was, I probably wouldn't have lived to tell it."
Sunshine looked back at her, having calmed down a bit. "Is there a happy ending?"
"Of course there is," Poppy responded, opening the book, "Now, let's start with the day my daddy, Brave King Peppy, led the great Bergen Town Escape…"
…
From there, Poppy told Sunshine the whole story; how Branch used to be gray, how he ended up joining her on her journey to save her friends, how she met Bridget and got her a date with the bergen king in exchange for their freedom, and possibly her favorite part, how Branch got his colors back.
"It was Branch who helped us teach the bergens that happiness was inside of them all along. But he had to learn that for himself first." She closed the book as she finished, "And we've all lived happily ever after together ever since."
Sunshine clapped and squealed with delight, Poppy hoping she could get to meet the bergens someday when she was older. Maybe soon if Poppy could convince Branch.
"That the end, Poppy," she asked sadly; she really liked the story, and wasn't ready for it to end.
"Not exactly," Poppy assured her.
"In fact, it was just the beginning of many more exciting stories to come."
