Forgive my limited knowledge of the layout of Branch's bunker. The movies don't really give much to go on, and I haven't watched enough of the cartoons to know much about it either.
...
Branch was organizing some of the supplies in his bunker while Sunshine was off playing by herself. Even though he had no clue where she was or what she was doing, he had been trying to keep himself from getting too overprotective. After unnecessarily interrupting her last game of make-believe, he'd promised her and Poppy that he wouldn't freak out over the trolling anymore.
"Help! Please help!"
Branch jerked to attention when he heard her cry, but tried to ignore it as best he could, instead focusing on alphabetizing a nearby bookshelf. He just had to keep telling himself, "She's just playing."
"Can anybody hear me?"
She's just playing…
"I'm scared!"
She's just playing…
"Braaaaaaaanch!"
She's not playing!
Branch whipped around as Sunshine screamed his name, knocking some of his books over in the process. He'd worry about them later. He had bigger problems at the moment.
"Sunny, are you okay," he called, "Where are you?"
"I…I don't know," she replied, "I think I'm lost!"
Branch tried to contain his own panic as he wracked his mind for ideas. He cursed himself for not keeping a close enough eye on her. He usually had his guard up too high, but in trying to tone it down, he'd made it almost disappear completely.
Sunshine was a curious kid; he shouldn't have assumed she'd stay in her room and not wander off. What if he somehow couldn't find her? What if she came across a trap he had neglected to remove? He wouldn't be able to live with himself she got hurt because of him.
"Okay, stay where you are, Sunny," he called, "I'll find you, don't worry. Can you tell me if you see anything that might give me an idea where to look?"
She began to stutter through panicked cries, "I-I can't see anything but dirt all around me!"
Shoot. She must be in a tunnel. That would make his search a lot harder than it needed to be.
"Keep talking, okay," he called as he began his pursuit, "I'll follow your voice."
"O-okay," Sunny replied, before going quiet once again.
"Sweetie, you're going to have to keep talking," he repeated.
"Um, uh…" she stammered.
Branch's nerves were starting to betray him, but he knew it wouldn't do them any good if they both freaked out. He had to think of something if Sunshine was too scared to speak.
"Here, I have an idea," he said as he traversed the halls of the bunker, "How about you sing me a song?"
The silence that followed was deafening, and it seemed go on forever before he could hear her voice again.
I love you
A bushel and a peck
A bushel and a peck
And a hug around the neck
He chuckled as she sang one of Poppy's signature lullabies. Arguably, that one was the cutest, especially when Sunshine sang it. He couldn't let that distract him, though. He had to focus on the task at hand.
A hug around the neck
And a barrel and a heap
A barrel and a heap
And I'm talking in my sleep
About you
As her voice increased in volume with each passing lyric, Branch peeked into every entrance and corridor he passed, hoping to catch a glimpse of the little yellow trolling.
At long last, he finally spotted her on the third refrain. She was sitting curled up on the floor in the middle of the tunnel, slowly rocking back and forth as she sang.
A barrel and a heap
And I'm talking in my sleep
About you
"About who," Branch asked playfully once Sunshine saw him. In a flash, she had sprung to her feet and ran towards the blue troll, diving into his arms.
"About you," she finished, laughing and sobbing at the same time. It hadn't been very long since the last time they saw each other, but to her, it may as well have been centuries.
"Shh, it's alright, Sunny," Branch said, stroking her hair, "I've got you. It's okay." He was relieved to see her unharmed, but he still felt guilty for letting her lose her way. He promised he'd keep better watch over her when she was in the bunker; he wouldn't hover over her shoulder and monitor her every move, but he wouldn't leave her completely unattended unless he absolutely had to.
A camera flash disrupted their heartfelt moment. Looking over his shoulder, he saw none other than Poppy, proudly waving the photo she had just snapped in her hand.
"That's one for the scrapbook."
"Poppy," Sunny yelled excitedly, running and tackling the pink troll to the ground. Poppy quickly noticed that she was trembling slightly, and looked to Branch with concern and confusion. "What happened," she mouthed.
"I'll tell you later," he replied, joining their hug. He continued to whisper soothing words into Sunshine's ear. She snuggled into her caretaker's embrace, still crying but no longer shaking. Poppy didn't know what was going on, but she didn't mind.
After all, you can never have too many hugs.
…
And now, I'm almost out of ideas. I only have one concrete concept left in my brain, so if anybody has a suggestion, please feel free to share it!
