Chapter 3 - The Allies

Even though I know that I'm in the hunger games and the only option is to kill or be killed I just can't help but feel guilty. I held her as my ally, the girl who I'm walking next to now, brought an axe down on her head. An axe I just so happen to be carrying. 'Jem' I hear Teagan say, 'Yeah' I respond, images of the 3 girls broken body in my head. 'It's getting late, why don't we climb up that tree for the night?' I hear myself responding and before I know it, we're high in up the branches of a big tree.
Not long after we hear the anthem start and we turn are heads to the sky. I want to cry when I see the first person up, but when I look over at Teagan, she seems almost... Happy? I guess that's just the way she's dealing with what she did. Up next is the boy from 5, that surprises me because he is - was - 18 but I guess the careers just wanted him out of the way. Then my district partner, Levi. He was so nice to me and constantly said I reminded him of his sister Via. Part of me wishes I'd allied with him because maybe, just maybe, he'd still be alive.
Then it's Teagan's partner and I look over to her in case she needs comfort. But to my surprise she seems completely unfazed. 'Are you okay?' I ask, she turns to me and say, 'Why wouldn't I be?' I leave it at that and turn away.
D1M - Victor Opulence - 18
After the 7 boy has gone from the sky, he's soon replaced by the girl from 8. Carlotta's kill. It's not that I'm jealous that she got more kills than me, but really, I'm supposed to be leader of the career pack and she's 17!
Next up is the boy from 8, Marina's kill, Sapphire and I glance at each other, I mean one 12-year-old, that's not good for trained career. Naturally we don't say anything though which is why I get a surprise when I hear Damian say 'One 12-year-old Marina! From district 8! I know you've been less up to it since your boyfriend died but you must step up your game!' Marina face goes from pink blush to red fury in less than a second. 'Maybe I would have gotten more kills if you hadn't snuck up behind the girl I clearly claimed!' As if on cue the district 11 girl appeared in the sky. The fours glower at each other until Carlos said, 'Quit it guys my kills coming up.'
That deflates the tension a bit, but I it's obvious that something isn't right. Funny I always thought that the careers had a really easy time getting on, but I guess we just got an unlucky pairing from 4 this year. After the two from 12 are shown as dead the light in the sky goes out and we get prepared to go to sleep. 'I'll take the first watch.' Both Marina and Carlotta say, 'Well I guess that's decided. Wake Damian and I up at about midnight.' And with that I walk into a far corner of the cornucopia roll out my sleeping bag and drift off.
