I do not own Harry Potter
Chapter Eighteen
The Hogwarts Express looked the same as ever, shining red as steam poured out of the top of it. Adeline and Evan went to the prefect meeting, Lily and Remus across from them, James somehow also there. It took everything in Adeline to not look at Remus, to not go to him and try holding him and beg him to come back. Once the meeting was over, Adeline was the first one out of the compartment, doing her rounds with Evan before finding hers and Severus' compartment.
"Are you okay?" he asked, voice gentle.
"Fine," she said, tone flat as she laid across her seat, covering her face with her arm and closing her eyes. "Going to take a nap. Wake me when we get there."
Adeline laid awake, the compartment quiet the entire trip. Once they arrived, Severus tapped her shoulder and she stood, wide awake still. They found Reggie, Evan, and Barty on the way off the train. The four boys all walked behind her, glaring at anyone that stared at her for too long.
Adeline didn't blame them for staring. She had dyed the underneath of her hair black, leaving the top bit blonde. Her hair was straightened, the blonde hair pulled back so the black could be seen. Her eyes were smokey and her lips were red as blood, dramatic compared to what people were used to seeing her wear. She wore a black dress under her opened black robe. Her black heels gave her six extra inches of height as she strutted pass other students.
After the welcoming feast, Adeline did a patrol through the school with Evan before settling into her brewing room, wolfsbane and pain potion already brewed and delivered for the night. She rechecked the premade potions, rather proud of herself for finding a way for the potion to keep for four months at a time. She changed into her silk nightgown and laid down, drinking a dreamless sleep potion before closing her eyes.
The next day, she dressed the same way, makeup, hair, and clothes. Reggie met her outside the great hall, offering his arm and escorting her inside. They headed to potions after that, heads held high. Adeline refused to look at Remus as they waited for the door to open. If anyone asked, she would deny seeing Marlenne and Remus talking by the wall, Marlenne giggling at something he said as he gave her a smirk. She would deny watching how he seemed so at ease flirting with her and how she wanted to smirk at him, find a way to make him blush for talking to the pretty girl.
The door opened and Slughorn smiled as they stepped into the room. Adeline sat at her own station at the front of the room, Reggie at the station beside her and Severus behind her. She took notes throughout class, denying that she could hear paper rustling as if notes were being passed when Slughorn wasn't looking between two Gryffindors two rows back, acutely aware that it was Remus' movements.
When the bell rang, Slughorn asked Adeline to stay behind.
"I was wondering if you wouldn't mind being my aid next year," he smiled. "It'll count towards an independent study if you do."
"I would love that," she smiled genuinely.
"It would be during your free periods. You'll have to pass your NEWTs this year, of course," he explained. "You would be helping teach other students. I don't think you'll have that problem though."
"I wouldn't mind it at all," she smiled.
"Wonderful!" he smiled. "Thank you!"
"No," she shook her head. "Thank you. I'm really looking forward to it."
Adeline told Reggie once she met him in the hall. He picked her up and spun her in a circle, causing her to laugh as he cheered.
"Put me down," she laughed and Reggie set her on her feet carefully.
"I'm proud of you," he smiled.
"I'm proud of me, too," she smirked.
"To runes!" he cheered as they headed towards the stairs.
"To runes!" she returned the cheer, taking his arm as they set off.
Dueling club was held that Saturday and only half of the club showed up. She stared at the dwindled numbers, knowing it was due to what had happened to Avery, the other Slytherins drawing a line in the sand. She smiled at the first and second years as the seventh years and her sixth-year boys worked with them. She turned to the fourth years that had been with her the entire time.
"One of you will be left in charge when I graduate," she told them. I'll tell you who at the end of the year and you can tell me if you're okay with the responsibilities of it all. I'll help you teach next year and you'll pick your own replacement the year after that and repeat the process. Are any of you interested?"
All of the fourth years nodded excitedly, causing Adeline to smile.
"Third, fourth and fifth years pair up. Review what we learned last year while we catch the youngest snakes up to speed," she demanded, turning with a kind smile to the younger students.
She knew she couldn't avoid every Gryffindor in the school for long. Two weeks into the school year and she was giving three fourth years detentions with Filtch for picking on a first year Hufflepuff. They glared at her as they ran off and she sighed before turning to the first-year girl.
"Hello," Adeline smiled to her, kneeling slightly so she could be at eye-level with her. "I'm Adie. What's your name?"
"Clarissa," the girl sobbed out.
"Let's get you back to your common room, Clarissa," Adeline stood, holding her hand out to the girl.
Clarissa took Adeline's hand tightly, hiding slightly behind Adeline as they went. She ignored Remus and Lily as she passed them in the main hall, walking towards the Hufflepuff common room. Adeline stopped in front of a portrait of fruit before they went any further.
"Do you like hot chocolate, Clarissa?" Adeline asked.
"Yes," she hiccupped.
"Can I show you my favorite place in the school?"
"Yeah," Clarissa smiled brightly.
Adeline tickled the pear and a doorknob appeared. Adeline pushed the door open, revealing the kitchen to the girl. Clarissa gasped at the sight and Adeline placed her hand on Clarissa's shoulder, leading her inside. She lifted Clarissa easily, setting her on the counter before she began moving around the kitchen, making the two of them both a mug of hot chocolate.
She passed a mug to Clarissa. The two sipped the hot chocolate with shared smiles, as if they were sharing a secret. Adeline snatched a few cookies from a plate floating pass them, passing one to Clarissa and dipping her own into her hot chocolate. Clarissa copied her, her eyes widening at the taste.
"How are you liking Hogwarts, Clarissa?" Adeline asked.
"Do the stairs have to move?" she whined.
"Did no one give you a schedule for the stairs?" Adeline asked curiously. "I helped make it when I was in my second year, I think."
"No," Clarissa shook her head.
"I'll make one for you and the other first years," Adeline promised. "Have you made any friends?"
"A few," Clarissa nodded.
"Good," Adeline smiled. "Keep them close. Especially best friends."
"Do you have a best friend?" Clarissa asked curiously.
"I did," Adeline sighed. "We had a fight over the summer. We aren't friends anymore."
"I'm sure you'll make up soon!" Clarissa insisted. "You should give them hot chocolate and cookies!"
"I'll think on it," Adeline laughed, watching as Clarissa finished her drink. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah," Clarissa nodded and Adeline helped her off the counter.
She took Clarissa's hand again, leading her to the Hufflepuff entrance. Adeline knocked the pattern perfectly, stepping back as a door appeared. She led Clarissa inside, looking around the room for the perfects. She saw Mattheo and waved him over.
"Mattheo, have you met Clarissa?" she asked.
"I have," Mattheo smiled down at the small girl. "Hello, Clarissa."
"Clarissa had a run in with a few Gryffindors a bit ago. We got some hot chocolate in her though, so I think she's feeling better now," Adeline smiled down at the girl, running her hand over the girls hair as she nodded her agreeance. "If you ever need help, just grab Mattheo or me. He's very kind."
"Okay," Clarissa nodded before seeing one of her friends and running off.
"How are you not a puff?" Mattheo smirked. "I swear you're softer than any of us."
"I think you forget that I made a seventh-year piss himself last year," she smirked.
"I heard it was more than piss," Mattheo mumbled to her, causing her to laugh.
"Hey, do you still have the stair schedule?"
"Yeah," he nodded.
"Do you think you could make copies for anyone who doesn't have it? Some first years are having problems getting around," she explained.
"Sure," he nodded. "I'll talk to the Gryffindors and have them do the same."
"I'll ask Pandora in Ravenclaw," Adeline nodded. "I should get going. I have rounds tonight and need to finish an essay before then.
"Hey, Adie?" Mattheo got her attention.
"Yeah?" she asked, turning to him.
"Are you alright? You just don't seem yourself anymore," his voice was gentle.
"I'm fine," she shrugged. "Just dealing with a lot."
"Well, we puffs are here if you need anything."
Adeline smiled at the genuine offer.
"Thank you," she smiled. "I appreciate that. Truly."
Mattheo nodded to her and she left, a small smile on her face. The smile remained until the next day between classes.
"Giving Gryffindors detention with Filtch, Black?"
Adeline turned to find Peter glaring at her. She rolled her eyes and continued walking, not wanting to deal with him. A burst of wind hit her back, causing her to have to reach out and catch herself on the wall. She grit her teeth and turned to face Peter.
"Pete, I'm not really up for whatever you're trying to do right now. Maybe tell the fourth years not to pick on first year puffs and they won't get detentions that they rightfully deserve," she told him, no emotion in her voice.
"What's going on over here?" Remus' voice caused Adeline to freeze up.
She turned slowly, staring at Remus as he approached with Marlenne.
"Just a friendly conversation," Peter smirked and Adeline snorted.
"Trying to knock me off my feet with a spell is friendly?" she asked.
"Would you like to see what unfriendly looks like?" he asked.
"Wormy," Remus' tone was a warning.
"Threatening me, Pete?" she smirked. "I thought you'd know better by now."
Remus hand touched Adeline's arm and she turned on him, ripping her arm out of his grasp.
"Don't touch me," she hissed.
"Adie," he tried.
"You don't get to call me that," she spat at him. "Only my friends get to. Last I checked you aren't one."
Remus sighed, taking a step back. Peter scoffed and Adeline turned to him in anger.
"What?" she asked him.
"Who's fault is it that you aren't friends anymore?" Peter asked her. "I distinctly recall you pushing all of us away."
"You pushed me away, you ass," Adeline reminded him. "You all did. Excuse me for keeping you away after it happened so that you couldn't hurt me worse. Now leave me the hell alone. Keep your damn lions in check."
Adeline turned on her heel, pushing pass Marlene as she went, causing the girl to glare at her. Adeline stepped into her brewing room, locking it up behind her and setting up her charms. She let out a loud scream and her magic pulsed out, the windows blowing out and glass flying. She waved her wand and the glass returned, the windows looking brand new. She let out a few deep breaths before grabbing the journal she'd bought over the summer.
She walked into the dueling room three hours early, practicing the spells that she'd written inside the journal, a few she'd created. In the end, she blew the dummy up, breathing heavily before allowing herself to fall to the floor. She got her breathing and anger under control before waving her wand and cleaning the room. She stood and got the room ready for her students, smiling as they began trickling in. She stared in confusion as a few Hufflepuffs walked in as well, Mattheo giving her a nod and Clarissa rushing forward, hugging Adeline around the waist.
"You stole the Hufflepuffs," James' voice irked Adeline's nerves.
"Why is it always one of you," she sighed, turning to face him. "I didn't steal anyone. They showed up after the fourth years that bullied a first year showed up at Remus' class. They felt more comfortable coming to me. How is that all my fault?"
"It's not," he shook his head. "You seem tired."
"Is that the polite way of saying I look like hell?" she asked bluntly.
"Basically," he nodded.
"Well, thank you so much for that. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a meeting with a few Ravenclaws to get to."
"What are you doing with the Ravenclaws?" James asked, jogging to catch up to her.
"Passing out the stair schedule to the younger students. A few of them aren't getting to classes on time. You would think maps would be passed around first-year," she sighed. "Damn castle is huge and most of it doesn't even get used. The least they could do is move the classes to the same few floors so it's easier to get to them."
"That would be easier," James nodded in agreement.
"Do you plan on following me?" she asked.
"You seem like you need a friend," he shrugged.
"I have friends," Adeline rolled her eyes.
"Friends who are death eaters?" James asked and Adeline froze, turning to face him.
"What do you want, James?"
"I want to make sure you're alright."
"I'm fine. You can go."
Adeline walked away, leaving James behind. He walked away, shaking his head as he went.
Pranks were Adeline's least favorite thing in the world. Had to be. She growled as she disappeared three dungbombs that had been set off under the Slytherin table, the laughter of the Gryffindors, most of the Ravenclaws, and a handful of Hufflepuffs reaching her ears. She walked around the Slytherin table with Evan and the other prefects, making sure no one was injured and getting rid of the smell left behind on peoples robes.
The Gryffindors didn't seem to appreciate Adeline's cleverness half as much as they should. She'd somehow stuck forty dungbombs to the underside of their table permanently and made it so they all went off at the same time. The Great Hall had smelt terrible for days due to the extra charms Adeline had placed on the products. Glares were sent in the general direction of the Slytherin table, but no one could pinpoint who the culprit was for sure, way too many Slytherins willing to take credit for it. Adeline had a smile on her face for the next week. Maybe pranks weren't so bad.
She was wrong. Pranks were disgusting and no good and terrible and she hated them. She sat between Mattheo's and Evan's beds in the hospital wing, making copies of the notes from their classes for them. She pulled out her spell journal, writing different ideas and weighting the options in her head as she stared around at the Slytherins and Hufflepuffs that we're laid in beds, a prank gone terribly wrong in the main hall that morning, causing fireworks to blow up far too close to the students of Hogwarts, seeming to target green and yellow baring students specifically.
Revenge was much more satisfying than a prank she decided. The Gryffindors would call her cruel as they walked through the school with green hair and yellow skin. Their robes kept flashing the phrase, 'I don't know how to twiddle my own wand correctly' across the back. The rest of the school thought it was amazing, but Adeline didn't think it was enough as she saw Mattheo's red skin still healing as he sat out of dueling club, having taken the brunt of one explosion while covering a few first years from both houses.
It was so strange how Gryffindors kept growing pumpkin heads at random. Well, random wasn't really correct. The pumpkin heads showed up whenever they would pick on a younger student. Strange indeed as the younger students began following Adeline around like lost ducks afterwards. Even stranger that they never told any of the teachers that they had seen Adeline send a wink their way whenever the pumpkin head students would run into walls, panicking when they didn't know what was going on, before she would disappear around a corner.
Adeline sighed happily as she made sure her dueling club knew how to cast the pumpkin head charm and the counter for it. The younger students laughed as the older students decided to duel while wearing the pumpkins, a shield up in front of them in case of wayward spells. Slughorn walked in and Adeline waved her wand quickly, the pumpkin heads disappearing as she smiled at him innocently.
"Fifty points to Slytherin," he smiled before leaving the room again.
"Adeline!" Sirius called, following her down an empty corridor.
"Yes, love?" she smirked as she turned to face him.
"Knock it off," he sighed.
"Knock what off?" she questioned.
"The pumpkin heads," he told her. "I know it's you."
"How could I possibly be the one making everyone grow gourds from their necks?" she asked. "I would literally have to be all over the school all the time. That makes no sense."
"You taught others how to do it," he stated. "The Slytherins and Hufflepuffs."
"Any proof?" she asked with a sigh.
"I'll find it," he smirked.
"Well, let me know when you do so I know who the weak link is," Adeline smirked, patting his shoulder as she passed him. "I warned Remus and Peter to keep your lions in check."
Adeline dressed for Hogsmeade on her birthday. Black boots, black pants that hugged her figure, and a black tank top covered by a black sweater that was left unbuttoned. Her hairs was pulled back and makeup was done before she headed to the Great Hall. She stared at her gifts, not really wanting to open them. She waved her wand over them, finding no warnings on any of the packages.
She received earrings from Walburga and Orion, a bracelet from Reggie, books from Evan, Barty, and Avery, and a letter from Tom, explaining that he owed her a gift when she returned for the summer. Adeline called for Tiffy and she took her gifts to her room for her. Adeline took a carriage with Reggie, Evan and Barty, the three boys cracking jokes and laughing the whole way as Adeline stared out the window, watching the orange, yellow and red leaves swaying in the soft breeze.
Adeline took Reggie's arm when they entered the village. The boys wanted to go to the Quidditch shop, so Adeline went to the bookstore while she waited for them to finish. She smiled to the shopkeeper before exploring the shelves. She found a muggle novel containing poetry by Oscar Wilde and smirked, paying for the book before exiting the store.
She met Reggie, Evan, and Barty outside of the Hogs Head, the four heading inside, greeting the other Slytherins that were there before ordering a few butterbeers. The boys talked about a new racing broom and Adeline stared out the window. She caught sight of Remus and Marlene coming out of the candy store, sharing a chocolate bar. Remus leaned down, kissing Marlene gently and Adeline smirked for a moment before remembering that Remus had left her. She watched as the couple joined James, who was holding Lily's hand, Peter, and Sirius, who had an arm around Dorcas' waist, holding her close. Adeline felt her heart drop into her stomach at the sight and turned away.
She excused herself, leaving the Hogs Head and heading back to the castle alone, walking the distance between the school and the village, stripping off her sweater in the process. She enjoyed the feeling of the breeze brushing across her skin, the weather perfect. She reached the school and sat on a large pumpkin under the tree in front of the Black Lake. She stared out at the water, watching as the giant squid threw a grindylow into the air, letting out a small laugh.
She sat there by herself until the sky had darkened, the only light being the full moon. She heard a howl in the distance and sighed, standing and heading for the school.
Sirius found her in her brewing room the next day, smiling as he approached her.
"Hi," he said, voice soft.
"Hey," she responded, voice flat.
"What's wrong?" he asked, confused as he moved closer to her, reaching for her.
Adeline side stepped him though, placing a stasis charm on the potion she'd been working on. She faced him, arms crossed over her chest.
"How long have you and Dorcas been a thing?" she asked.
"What are you talking about?" he questioned.
"I saw you in Hogsmeade with her. Had your arm around her," Adeline explained.
"Dorcas and I aren't together," Sirius shook his head. "I do have to say it's a strange turn of events when you're the jealous one."
Adeline rolled her eyes and uncrossed her arms, going back to her potion. Sirius sighed before standing behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her back against his chest as he rested his chin on her shoulder.
"Do you realize how much of a dunderhead I would have to be to cheat on you?" he asked, voice soft. "I've told you before and I'll say it for the rest of our lives, Adie. You're it for me. It's always been you."
Adeline sighed, putting the stasis charm back on the potion. She set her wand aside and leaned into his touch, resting against him.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "This is just more difficult than I thought it would be."
"I get that," he nodded. "Tell you what, if you ever feel uncomfortable with someone I'm spending time with, just tell me."
"I'm uncomfortable with you spending time with Dorcas," she admitted, feeling bad about it. "She's really pretty and sarcastic, just your type."
"That's fair," he nodded. "I hadn't noticed if she was pretty, though. I've only ever had eyes for you. Speaking of you, I have a gift."
"A gift?" Adeline asked, turning her head to see him.
"Of course," he smiled. "Your birthday was yesterday. Birthdays mean gifts. Why do you think I snuck away from the Gryffindors?"
Adeline smirked as Sirius reached into his pocket, pulling out a small box. She opened it, frowning when she saw a key.
"It's to the cottage," he explained. "I wanted you to have a key in case you ever needed to get away. I'll be there quite often taking care of Uncle Alphard's businesses. The paperwork is all there."
"Thank you," she smiled.
"I put it on a chain," he smiled, pulling the key out and sliding the long chain over her head. "This way, you can have it on you at all times."
"I love it," she smiled as he slid the key into her shirt, the key sitting beside the sword that Bella had given her years ago.
"I have to get going. I'll sneak away as soon as I can," he promised before kissing her gently.
"I guess I'll let you leave," she sighed.
"It wouldn't be a bad idea for us to seem as if we are dating," Sirius said suddenly and Adeline froze a bit.
"What?"
"Throw off suspicion. James suspects our sneaking around and I think Remus does, too."
"Oh," she whispered, not liking the idea at all.
Adeline watched as Sirius left, wondering if that was the real reason he'd suggested it or not.
Christmas holidays came and the ball was the same as it had been the past few years. Adeline wondered if the purebloods ever got tired of the same parties and people all of the time. Same people dancing, same food, same elf made wine. Adeline knew she was tired of it. She walked with Tom, people openly talking about their plans in front of her now, as if she wasn't even actually there. Adeline fell into her bed that night, silk nighty rubbing against her skin. She pulled Remus' sweater out from under her pillow, pulling it over her head before laying down again and falling asleep.
She was called to a meeting at Black manor the day before holidays were set to end. Turns out, Tom wanted to brand a few people, Reggie and Severus included. Adeline was thankfully left out of the entire thing, Tom having told her he wanted to be sure she had a cover if something went wrong. She hated the black thing he'd settled on, hated how it looked on Reggie's and Severus' arms as she held them that night, her pain potion causing them both to fall asleep.
She went straight to the library upon entering Hogwarts, anger on her face, people moving out of her way. She looked through book after book on cursed marks and taboo tattoos, finding nothing that could help her remove the marks. It took everything in her not to throw the books out a window in frustration.
Instead, she waved her wand, sending the books back to their shelves. She left the library, rubbing her neck and hating herself. She looked up and saw Remus pressing Marlene against a wall, kissing her softly. She froze, just watching as he held her hips, smiling into the kiss. Her mind went blank for a moment before she shook her head, hearing Filch coming down the hall. She debated what to do for a moment, before holding back a groan.
"Mister Filch!" she intercepted him, making sure she was loud enough to be heard. "How were your holidays?"
"Black," Filch glared at her. "What are you doing out and about?"
"I was in the library and now I'm starting my rounds," she half lied. "Do you mind if I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead," he grumbled, staring at her in suspicion.
"Where do you find students out of bed? I mean, I've found a few but not very many. I think I'm looking in the wrong places. I could use a few pointers," she smiled sweetly. "Hello, Misses Norris!"
The cat stared up at her, letting out a soft mew. She leaned down, letting the cat sniff her hand before petting her. Misses Norris purred, rubbing against Adeline's leg when she stood up straight. Filch watched her curiously before giving her a nod.
"Well, follow me," he told her. "I'll show you the most used spots and a few secret passages."
Adeline followed Filch for the next hour, listening intently as he showed her broom cupboards and secret passageways that all the upper year students knew not to use. She carried Misses Norris at some point, petting the grey cat as they walked, enjoying the purring of the animal. She decided she wanted a cat.
She set Misses Norris down, thanking Filch for showing her the spots before heading to her brewing room. She rubbed her face roughly, waving her wand and clearing away her makeup and letting her hair out. She changed into her most comfortable pajamas before climbing into her cot and falling asleep.
She walked into the dueling room, watching as Clarissa knocked Mattheo off his feet, smiling and cheering her on as she helped Mattheo back to his feet. Mattheo gave her an amused look, which she returned with a smirk.
"Got knocked down by a first year?" she joked. "That has to hurt the pride."
"Actually, I'm a firm believer that people need to be knocked down every so often so that they can get back up and learn from it," Mattheo smiled.
Adeline stared at him for a moment before nodding. Clarissa ran over then, wrapping her arms around Adeline's waist.
"Adie! Adie! Did you see it?"
"I did," she smiled, hugging the girl back. "You did good. Go practice your shield now."
Clarissa ran off, joining her friends as they practiced the shield charm. Mattheo just watched the whole interaction, smiling.
"What?" Adeline asked when she turned back to him.
"Can I ask you to Hogsmeade next weekend?" he asked curiously, causing Adeline to stare at him in surprise.
"You do know I'm married, correct?" she asked him curiously.
"I also know that it was an arranged marriage and that you and Reggie don't have romantic feelings for each other," he pointed out. "Just one date. If it goes terribly, I swear to leave you be afterwards."
"Don't leave me be," she shook her head. "We're friends. If it doesn't go well, we go back to that."
"Is that a yes?" he asked with a hopeful smile.
"Sure," she smiled.
Mattheo's smile grew as Adeline walked away, going to correct a few fourth years on their stances. The next weekend came up quickly and Adeline swore she had nothing to wear. Reggie watched her anxiously moving around her brewing room, searching through her trunk for an outfit.
"Adie, it's just a Hufflepuff. He knows what you look like already. Just throw something on," he had an amused smile on his face and Adeline sent a glare his way.
She held up a black dress before tossing it aside for another black dress.
"Everything is black," Reggie reminded her. "You're the one who decided you wanted to look like a funeral all the time this year."
"Shut it," she glared at him before grabbing a pair of jeans.
She pulled on the jeans and her brown boots, turning to her shirts. Reggie sighed and stepped forward, nudging her out of the way. He pulled a black tank top out and tossed it to her before shrugging out of his brown leather jacket. She stripped out of her shirt and pulled the tank top on, turning her body so Reggie couldn't see her chest before pulling his jacket over her arms.
"There," he smiled. "Maybe don't wear the red lipstick. Doesn't fit everything else."
Adeline waved her wand over her face, giving herself a more natural look and pining a few of her curls back. She nodded to her reflection before turning to Reggie.
"Thank you," she told him.
"Helping my wife get ready for a date with a Hufflepuff was definitely not on my list of things I thought I'd ever do," Reggie laughed. "Come on or we'll be late."
Adeline and Reggie walked through the school, heading down to the main hall. Reggie joined Barty and Evan at the bottom of the staircase as Adeline looked around for Mattheo. She caught Sirius' eye from where he stood with James, Peter, and Remus. He stared at her, eyes roaming over her for a moment before Peter distracted him. Adeline turned away, looking towards the group of Hufflepuffs she saw coming into the main hall, going on her tiptoes to look for Mattheo.
He made his way pass the other puffs, smiling when he saw her. He was in jeans, black boots and a nice black shirt, a black jacket over his shoulders. She wondered if he wore black because of her or because he looked good in the color.
"You look nice," she smiled when he reached her.
"So do you," he smiled back. "Ready to go?"
"Yeah," she nodded and they walked out of the hall, grabbing a carriage with no one else in it.
The walked through the village a bit, just discussing the dueling club and what they wanted to do after school next year. Mattheo wanted to become a healer, wanted to help people in any way possible. She told him that was a very Hufflepuff way of thinking and he laughed, causing her to smile. After walking for a bit, they entered the Three Broomsticks, Adeline finding them a booth while Mattheo ordered their lunch and drinks. He joined her with two butterbeers.
"Did you hear about apparition lessons coming up?" he asked her.
"I did. I'm excited. My house elf won't have to take me everywhere anymore," she smiled.
"You have a house elf?" he asked curiously.
"Two, actually. One of them was my family elf who was left to me when my parents passed. The other I got from the ministry afterwards because I knew I couldn't handle everything on my own. I tried paying them both, but they refused. I did convince them to take multiple vacations throughout the year, so that's something," she explained.
"Nice," he nodded as their food arrived.
They talked a bit more as they ate. Once they finished, Mattheo left a tip on the table and they headed out of the bar. They began walking towards the carriages.
"Oi! Mattheo!" Sirius' voice carried over to them and they both froze, neither looking excited for what was about to happen.
"What, Sirius?" Mattheo asked, turning to face the other boy.
"Oh, joy," Adeline sighed when she saw all four of the marauders. "It's all of you."
"Trying to be the next one she gets used by?" Sirius smirked. "Be careful when you mix with snakes, puff. Might end up getting bit."
"I think we both know that the one who does the biting is in your group of friends," Adeline shot back, causing the four marauders to stare at her in shock while Mattheo thought she was speaking metaphorically.
"Maybe leave us be?" Mattheo suggested. "We were having a nice time up until now."
"I'm just trying to give you some fair warning, mate," Sirius held his hands up, smirking.
"A warning? Is that what you call this?" Mattheo asked. "Seems more like a jealous display to me. Didn't you used to get upset at her whenever any other boy even so much as looked in her direction?"
Adeline truly tried to hold back her smile, but she knew she failed.
"Watch your tone," Sirius glared at him.
"You came up to us," Adeline reminded him.
Sirius went to take a step towards Adeline when Mattheo stepped in front of her slightly. She placed her hand on his arm and he stepped back to the side, smiling as he watched her, knowing she could handle herself.
"Do I need to remind everyone who you truly are?" Sirius asked, voice low and threatening.
"I know exactly who and what I am," she said, voice just as dangerous as his. "Seems someone needs to remind you of who you are though."
"What's going on?" Reggie asked, suddenly appearing beside Adeline, Evan, Barty, and Severus beside him.
"Nothing," Adeline smirked as Sirius took a step back at the sight of his little brother. "Nothing at all. Isn't that right, Potter?"
Sirius glared at her and she simply smirked.
"I'd take being a Potter over being a Black any day," he sneered.
"Are you trying to hurt my feelings?" she asked, looking confused.
"Can't hurt something you don't have," Remus spoke up.
"Stay out of this," Adeline sneered at him and Sirius' smile widened.
"Ooh. I think you hit a nerve, Moony," he joked.
"I think it's time you left us alone," Mattheo spoke up, eyes on Sirius. "All of you."
"I don't think you get to tell us what to do," Remus stepped up to Sirius' side, Peter and James hesitantly following him.
Adeline whispered something to Reggie and he smirked, stepping back.
"What was that?" Sirius asked.
"None of your business," she shrugged as a response.
"Whispering sweet nothings to your husband in front of your date?" Remus asked. "No shame."
"I always knew you were a whore," Sirius smiled before Mattheo's fist collided with his face, knocking him back.
Sirius tackled Mattheo and the other boys all surged forward, tackling one another while Severus pulled Adeline out of the fray. Adeline pushed Severus away, rushing forward to pull Sirius off of Mattheo. His elbow came back, hitting her lip. She tasted blood as she let out an angry growl, wrapping her arms around his torso and pulling.
They landed on the ground, Sirius falling backwards on her and knocking the breath out of her. Severus grabbed Sirius, throwing him off of Adeline and taking over the fight with him. Adeline tackled James next, knocking him off of Reggie. James stayed down, not really wanting to fight anyways, Reggie doing the same. She looked over finding Peter viciously getting beaten by Barty and ran forward, pulling at Barty just for him to push her away before he continued. She got back up immediately, pulling at him again just for him to grab her instead. He tossed her to the ground and punched her across the face, causing her head to snap to the side. She caught sight of Peter staring at her in horror before she turned back to Barty.
Sirius was over his shoulder then, wand against Barty's back while Barty's arm was raised, posed to land another blow. Adeline stared at Barty as he realized who he'd just hit, noting the swelling that was already taking over her cheek. Barty stood slowly, stepping away from her as Mattheo and Reggie ran forward, helping Adeline to her feet as Remus tried to control the growl that was threatening to escape him.
Sirius kept his wand on Barty. Barty just stared at Adeline, unsure of what to do, fear of her and Sirius rising inside of him.
"Lower your wand!" McGonagall's voice yelled as she approached the group.
Sirius slowly lowered his wand, eyes not leaving Barty as he did so.
"To the castle! Now!" she yelled. "Hospital wing!"
Adeline moved to Peter without thought, helping him to his feet before pulling his arm over her shoulders. The strange group walked up to the castle, McGonagall behind them looking more angry than anyone had ever seen. Pomfrey stared in shock when she saw all of the students walk in. She grabbed Peter first, as he was the one most covered in blood.
"I have never been so disappointed in my entire teaching career," McGonagall breathed. "Students brawling in Hogsmeade. Your privileges to visit the town have been revoke! For all of you until you complete school! I don't care that you have another year left, Mr. Rosier!"
Pomfrey laid a gentle hand on Adeline's arm causing her to turn towards the matron. Pomfrey gave her an ice pack and a sympathetic look before going over Sirius' injuries. Adeline held the ice pack against her face, not really caring about the injury in the slightest.
"Someone explain to me what happened," McGonagall demanded.
When all of the boys started speaking over each other, McGonagall groaned and turned to Adeline.
"Mrs. Black?"
"Sirius called me a whore and Mattheo hit him. It turned into a brawl then. I tried pulling every one off of each other, but they weren't really having it."
"And who hit you?"
"Sirius hit my lip with his elbow, but Barty is the one who caused this," she stated, removing the ice pack for a moment. "He's also the one who did that to Pete. That's why Sirius had his wand on Barty when you showed up."
"Well, thank you Mrs. Black for trying to stop all of this," McGonagall began but Adeline cut her off.
"Oh, don't thank me. Sirius may have started running his mouth but I ran mine as well," she admitted.
"Either way, you tried to get them to stop fighting and I appreciate it. Seems I always find you in the middle of fights."
"I have a habit of throwing myself between spell fire. Might as well add fist fights into my repertoire," Adeline joked.
"Mister Black, Sirius I mean, and Reynolds, you will be serving detention for the next two months. Every Saturday afternoon with Filch," McGonagall started handing out the punishments. "Maybe having to clean by hand will teach you how to work together. Mister Crouch, you have the same punishment with your head of house. The rest of the Gryffindors will have detention with me for the next month on Friday nights and the Slytherins will have detention with Professor Slughorn Friday nights for the next month. Fifty points from your houses. Each."
"Each?" Sirius asked, enraged. "No Hogsmeade, detentions, and fifty points each?"
"Be happy that you aren't losing more, Mister Black. I'm tired of you treating other students so terribly. Don't think I don't remember what happened with Mrs. Black your second year and how she covered for you then. Maybe you'll act more grateful towards her for trying to protect you all these years until now. Mrs. Black, you will have detentions with myself Tuesdays after classes for the next month rather than the Fridays with Horace."
"Yes, ma'am," Adeline nodded.
"Mrs. Black, sit please. I want to check your lip," Pomfrey demanded, tone soft as she led Adeline away from all of the boys. "Anyone not injured is dismissed. I don't care about your bruised knuckles, Mister Crouch. If you hadn't fought in the first place, you wouldn't have them. I'm sure Mister Rosier can wrap them for you just fine. Or you may ask Mister Reynolds as he apprentices under me. Not sure how much he wants to help you right now though."
Adeline snorted a laugh before feeling her face throb. She flinched before sitting down, moving the ice pack so Pomfrey could look her over. Pomfrey summoned bruise cream, getting ready to put it on Adeline when Remus took it from her hand gently.
"May I?" he asked, looking to Adeline.
"No," Adeline answer immediately, grabbing the tube from him and conjuring a mirror to float in front of her.
She applied the bruise cream herself as Pomfrey shooed Remus out of the hospital wing, not a scratch on him. Once she'd finished with the cream, she headed over to Severus. She rubbed the cream on his chin where Sirius had caught him, the bruise disappearing almost immediately. She moved over to Peter next, Sirius glaring at her from the chair he'd been forced into by Pomfrey, bruises covering his face from Severus.
Adeline smirked at the bruises before turning her attention to Peter. She rubbed the cream on his bruises, the blood having already been cleared from his face. Adeline waved her wand and the cuts on his face from where Barty's rings had cut his face received butterfly bandages. He gave her a sad look, which she returned with a soft smile before brushing his bangs off of his face and backing away. She tossed the cream to Sirius, letting him clean himself up.
"You and Mister Snape are free to go," Pomfrey told her. "Come see me if you have any pain."
"Yes, madam," Adeline nodded. "Thank you."
Severus and Adeline walked out of the hospital wing, finding Reggie waiting for them. The three walked down the halls, people moving out of their way as they went, the three looking a bit terrifying as they went. Once in her brewing room, Adeline placed privacy and silencing charms before falling into one of the chairs in the room.
"Are you two alright?"
"I'm fine," Reggie shrugged.
"He's more than fine," Severus smirked. "He and Potter didn't even seem to be trying."
"They seemed perfectly happy to have me leave them in peace," she smirked as Reggie turned red.
"So that crush that you had. Definitely gone, right?" Severus stared at Reggie pointedly.
"Shut it," Reggie pushed Severus, causing Adeline and Severus to both laugh. "I'm heading to check on Evan and Barty. Maybe throw a few hexes Barty's way in the process."
"Be careful," Adeline called after him as he left the room, Severus redoing the wards on the room.
"What the bloody hell was that?" Severus demanded, eyes on Adeline.
"What was what?" she asked confused.
"Black treating you like that again. I thought the two of you were together. Also, why were you on a date?"
"How did you know?" she asked, confused.
"Reggie and I both know," Severus shrugged. "I'm sure his friends know as well and are just not saying it."
Adeline groaned, leaning her head back.
"Sirius said we should be seen going on dates with other people. I don't think he realized that I actually would say yes if asked by someone."
"He's an idiot and I don't know what you see in him," Severus sighed. "What are you going to say to him when he barges in here demanding answers?"
Adeline flinched and Severus stared at her, confused.
"Adie, please tell me you aren't doing what I think that you're doing?" Severus' voice was soft, almost pleading.
"I have to," she shrugged.
"He'll hate you, Adie," Severus told her.
"He'll be alive though," she sighed. "He'll understand one day."
"No, he won't," Severus argued. "Black is not understanding in any compacity. He's an idiot and a toerag. Breaking his heart so that he hates you and will leave you in peace is not the way to do this. Even once everything is over, he won't forgive you."
"But he'll be alive," Adeline repeated. "The Dark Lord wants Sirius dead and out of the way because of me, because of my attachment to him. If Sirius hates me, he won't go after him. He won't touch him."
"You can't be sure of that," Severus sighed.
"I have to try," she responded, tears gathering in her eyes. "I have to protect him. I've been in love with him since we were kids. I can't see him dead."
Severus pulled Adeline close, hugging her until the crying stopped.
"Remus is much better at talking sense into you," Severus mumbled.
"Remus left me," she mumbled back. "He left us."
"He couldn't watch you die, either," Severus defended. "You can't be angry at him for doing exactly what you are."
"Watch me."
It took a week for Sirius to catch up to her.
"Adie," he demanded her attention as she put a stasis charm on a potion. "What the hell?"
"What?" she asked, confused.
"What were you doing with the Hufflepuff?" he clarified.
"You said we needed to be seen dating other people," she shrugged. "So, Mattheo asked and I said yes. What's wrong with that? Also, why are you the one who's angry? You're the one who called me a whore in front of everyone, again."
"I was trying to throw off suspicion," he shrugged.
"My busting my lip open?" she asked, voice rising. "Brilliant! Best plan you've ever had!"
"I didn't mean to hit you," he flinched. "I thought you were one of your friends."
"So, hitting them is okay and hitting the Hufflepuff that defended me is alright as well?" she questioned, giving him an unamused stare. "You could have just left us alone. Or did you think that I wouldn't be asked out at all?"
"Well, I thought everyone was afraid of you," Sirius offered. "I didn't think anyone would actually gather up the courage to ask you."
"I'm going to tell you to leave now and come back when you've removed your foot from your mouth," she rolled her eyes, ignoring Sirius as she went back to her potion.
Sirius let out a rough breath before sitting on the bench in front of her potion, watching her from across the table. She finished the rotation on the potion and turned the heat down. She finally looked up, staring at him.
"I'm sorry," he told her sincerely. "I let my anger get the best of me when I saw you with him. Mattheo's a good-looking bloke and it made me jealous. I know it's my own fault for even suggesting we see other people in the first place but still. It threw me off a bit. I'm sorry."
"If you call me a whore ever again I'm using a vanishing spell on your tongue," she told him.
"I thought you liked my tongue," he smirked.
"Not when you're using it to call me a whore," she shot back.
Sirius stood and came around the table. He pulled Adeline into his arms and held her, running his fingers through her hair. Adeline let out an annoyed huff before leaning into him, taking comfort in his touch.
"I'm sorry," he whispered again. "I keep screwing this up."
"Maybe start thinking before you speak," Adeline suggested. "Hard concept for you, I'm sure."
"Funny," Sirius rolled his eyes before backing away from her slightly. "I am sorry. I'll do better."
"If you don't, I'll hex you," Adeline told him, not much feeling in her voice.
Sirius put his finger under her chin, lifting her head so he could look into her eyes. He leaned in, kissing her gently. He pulled away a few moments later and gave her a soft smile.
"Go back to your tower," she sighed. "I'm sure Filch was all too happy to boss you and Mattheo around today."
"He hates me," Sirius groaned.
"Mattheo or Filch?"
"Yes."
"Who's fault is that?" she smirked.
"My own," he nodded.
"Well, at least you're self-aware," she joked before kissing him goodbye.
Adeline let out a sigh once Sirius had left the room, not sure how she was going to pull this off. She wrote to Severus that night, asking if he happened to have any suggestions. His only suggestion was not having started anything in the first place, which she wholeheartedly agreed with to be honest. She wasn't exactly in favor of hurting the man she loved.
The next day, Adeline stood in the Great Hall with the other sixth years, finding a hoop beside Mattheo. He gave her a wide smile before they faced the front, listening to the ministry official talking about the three D's: Destination, Determination, and Deliberation. Once the grand speech was completed, a few snickers could be heard throughout the hall.
"In one, two, three!" the instructor called out, causing people to look around in a panic.
Instead of attempting, Adeline just watched as everyone else tried, reaching her hand out to catch Mattheo when he lost his balance. She let out a laugh as one person yelled that they'd done it when all they'd really done was jump while turning in their hoop. The Ravenclaw sent a glare her way, Pandora trying really hard not to laugh at her classmate when she caught Adeline's eye.
Once everyone had corrected themselves in their hoops, Adeline closed her eyes. She concentrated on the inside of her hoop, ignoring the others around her. She turned in her hoop, growling slightly when nothing happened. She tried a few more times before opening her eyes. Mattheo was watching her with an amused look and she rolled her eyes.
"Didn't get something on the first try?" he joked.
"I will hex you," she threatened, finger pointed at him and causing him to laugh loudly.
"Again!" the instructor called out and Adeline concentrated.
She turned in her hoop and fell over, looking down to see her knee separated from her body.
"Adie!" Mattheo yelled as teachers rushed over to her.
A puff of smoke appeared and Adeline's knee was reattached. McGonagall helped her back to her feet, giving her a stern look.
"Are you alright?" she asked in a soft voice.
"Mhm," Adeline lied, feeling like she might throw up the longer she thought about it.
"What you all just saw is called 'splinching.' It happens when you are not concentrating hard enough on one of the three D's. Let's try again!" the instructor called out and Adeline, along with multiple other students, were shocked at hearing they were immediately trying again.
Adeline shook her head and closed her eyes, concentrating again. She imagined herself appearing just outside of her hoop, determined to land where she wanted to. She opened her eyes, turned in her hoop and felt a tugging on her naval. She appeared a few steps forward, stumbling slightly.
"Oh," she whispered as people turned to stare at her, the loud pop ringing through the hall.
She looked over to Mattheo, seeing him staring at her proudly. They both let out loud laughs and other students began talking excitedly. Reggie ran over, hugging her before being told to go back to his own circle. The hall continued practicing, Reggie being the only other one to apparate successfully by the end of the hour. A few people had been splinched and put back together, the Ravenclaw that had glared at Adeline included.
The sixth years walked out of the Great Hall, all talking excitedly as they left. The Hufflepuffs and Slytherins headed to dueling club, meeting up with the other members along the way.
"Of course, Adeline did it," Evan said as they entered the room. "I should have put money on it."
"A few of us did," Severus stated as two fourth years passed him galleons.
"So, you two are out of the running for instructors when I leave," Adeline joked, laughing at their dejected faces.
"Who are you thinking?" Lorna asked, stepping forward slightly.
"Is there a bet for this going around, too?" she asked Severus, brow raised.
"Maybe," Severus smirked.
"I haven't decided yet," she told everyone. "It's between two people and I'm not telling you who because I don't want you to act differently if it is or isn't you. Let's get started!"
After dueling club, Adeline wrote to Tom, asking his opinion about the two students.
'Why not both of them?'
'I hadn't thought about that. It's not a bad idea though. I could put people in pairs and put them in charge of different groups and see how well they do together. I have next year to help them with any mistakes and all that.'
'Seems like you already know what you're doing.'
'You helped.'
'Barely.'
Adeline laughed before shutting her journal, putting it in her bag and heading down to the Great Hall for dinner, smiling now that it looked back to normal. Word had travelled that Adeline and Reggie had managed to apparate and other students stared at them as the two walked in, arms connected and heads held high.
Mattheo sent a note over to her as she was eating, an origami bird fluttering over to her. She smiled at him before opening the note.
'Meet me by the lake after dinner?'
She looked to him and nodded yes. He smiled brightly and went back to his dinner.
"What are you doing?" Reggie asked, confused.
"He wants to meet after dinner," she responded with a shrug.
"Probably to snog," Severus whispered to her.
"I don't think that's going to go over well," Reggie whispered.
"I'm an adult," she reminded them, voice not a whisper.
"Dig your own hole, then. I don't care," Reggie rolled his eyes, going back to his food.
As everyone began leaving the Great Hall, Adeline met Mattheo by the doors. The two went out the doors, Sirius watching them as they went before Dorcas pulled on his hand, distracting him. Mattheo bent his knees slightly and Adeline hoped on his back, allowing him to carry her the rest of the way. She mused his dark curls after he'd set her back on her feet. They sat on the ground in front of the lake, watching the water.
"I'm sorry about punching someone during our date," he told her.
"It's fine," she sighed. "I've had worse."
"Like Sirius?" Mattheo asked curiously.
"Yeah," she nodded. "Like Sirius."
"Can I ask what happened with you two? You were engaged when you left and then suddenly you came back married to Regulus."
"Well, Sirius got drunk at a party and called me a whore to no one's surprise. Walburga Black disowned him and I ended up having to marry Reggie due to some contract from I don't even know how long ago," she explained.
"So, you and Sirius were forced together, too?" he asked curiously.
"It didn't feel forced with him," Adeline smiled softly.
"You love him," Mattheo nodded.
"What?" Adeline asked confused.
"Those feelings obviously are still there," Mattheo gave her a soft smile. "It's okay. I knew there was a chance for that when I asked you on our date. I still had to try though."
"Friends?" Adeline asked.
"Friends," he nodded, bumping her shoulder lightly. "We should get back. It's starting to get dark."
"Such a Hufflepuff," Adeline joked as she stood.
"We have rounds tonight," he reminded her and she sighed.
"Again. Such a Hufflepuff."
"We throw the best parties," he defended.
"You really do," she told him. "I was not expecting it."
"No one ever does."
The two began walking through the school, sending the younger students to bed and reminding the older students of curfew as they went. As they made it to the third floor, they turned down the hall that led to the library, both freezing when they saw Sirius and Dorcas. Sirius had Dorcas pressed against the wall, his hand on her waist and the other above her, their bodies just barely touching as she smiled up at him brightly.
Adeline turned, prepared to walk away. Mattheo reached out and grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers without hesitation. He pulled her forward and she moved with him. He gave her a smirk and a wink before looking at the two seventh years.
"Curfew in an hour," he reminded them, causing the two to jump.
"Oh. Thanks, Mattheo," Dorcas smiled.
Mattheo gave her a smile before turning back to Adeline as they walked pass the two.
"So, are we still on for Sunday?" he asked her.
"Yeah," she smiled brightly, moving closer to him as she caught on to what he was doing.
"The Slytherin princess and the Hufflepuff perfect prefect," Sirius' voice followed them.
"Ignore him," Mattheo whispered just loud enough for her to hear as they continued walking, raising his voice back to normal. "I got some sugar quills in the post yesterday. Would you like some?"
"I love sugar quills," she told him honestly before continuing. "I asked Tiffy to make us something for lunch. I hope that's okay?"
"Yeah. I love Tiffy's cooking," Mattheo nodded as they turned the corner, his voice dropping now that they were out of sight of the Gryffindors. "Who's Tiffy?"
"My house elf," she whispered back. "Think it's safe?"
They heard footsteps following them then and they both rolled their eyes. Mattheo moved quickly, catching Adeline off guard when suddenly she was between Mattheo and the wall, his hand around her waist and holding her close. His other hand went under her chin, holding her face up so they were looking into each other's eyes.
"Siri!" Dorcas called out, trying to get him to go back to her as Sirius came around the corner.
Adeline and Mattheo turned then, staring at Sirius in mock confusion. He stopped, staring in shock before he took in Adeline's posture. He set his eyes on Mattheo, who released Adeline slowly, standing straight as he stared back at Sirius. Adeline put her hand on Mattheo's arm, getting his attention. She shook her head slightly and he nodded to her, stepping back. She looked to Sirius as Dorcas came around the corner, annoyance in her eyes. Adeline watched as he stood straighter, taking Dorcas' hand. Sirius and Adeline's eyes locked and she turned away, Mattheo following her down the hall. After their rounds, Mattheo walked Adeline to her brewing room, surprised when she told him she didn't stay in the Slytherin common room and hadn't in years.
"Why not?" he asked, confused.
"Well, turns out purebloods aren't fans of people who call them out. I punched Barty for calling Lily a mudblood and I made Avery piss himself. Not exactly Slytherin approved actions," she explained.
"Sounds like Barty deserved the punch to me," Mattheo offered.
"I want to thank you for something," Adeline said, stopping outside of her door.
"What's that?" he asked.
"Every time there's been a confrontation, you've stepped back when I motioned for you to. Most people try to stop me from fighting or try to protect me. You never did that though. You always just stood back and watched."
"You're powerful," Mattheo shrugged. "I've seen you in dueling club and I know you can handle yourself. I've also heard how actual duels that you've been in went. You're a bit terrifying, Adeline. I like it though. It's attractive."
"Hufflepuffs are weird," Adeline smirked. "Why would you find someone who's terrifying attractive?"
"Well, we Hufflepuffs are unafraid of toil. Sorting hat said so and everything."
"Hence the punch."
"Hence the punch," Mattheo smiled at her. "It's impressive when someone stands up for themselves and for others. Especially when it's against their own friends or house. You've done that a few times now. All of the Hufflepuffs look up to you a bit and you already know that the second and first year students idolize you."
"Not explaining the attraction," she pointed out.
"I have seven younger siblings," Mattheo smirked. "Ask me who one of them is."
"Who?" Adeline asked.
"Clarissa."
"You're joking!" she yelled, laughing.
"I'm not," he laughed back. "You walked in with her and called me over, I thought she'd gotten in trouble for a moment! Then you told me what happened. I'd already thought you were brilliant, but then you help my little sister. It set off a chain of events, so to speak. I also find it attractive how you don't need anyone to fight for you. You can do it on your own and hate when people underestimate you."
"I still can't believe you didn't tell me Clarissa was your little sister. I can't believe she didn't tell me," Adeline smirked. "Sneaky badgers."
"The Hufflepuffs know," Mattheo shrugged.
"Seven younger siblings?" Adeline asked.
"Four sisters, three brothers," he told her. "Clarissa is a triplet."
"Where are the other two?"
"No magic," he shrugged. "We're muggleborn. Our youngest brother, the youngest actually, had some accidental magic recently."
"That's so weird how it skips around like that," Adeline shook her head.
"I always wondered about how people are born with magic and others weren't," Mattheo admitted. "I haven't found any answers."
"I'll look in my families libraries," she told him. "Let you know if I find anything."
"Please do," Mattheo smiled. "I should get to my common room."
"Goodnight, Mattheo," Adeline smiled.
Mattheo took her hand and kissed it before looking into her eyes again.
"Goodnight, Adie."
Adeline watched Mattheo walk away before going into her brewing room. Her soft smile fell when she saw Sirius sitting in the room, waiting for her.
"So, how long have you and Mattheo been seeing each other?" Sirius asked.
"Not sure. How long have you and Dorcas actually been seeing each other?" Adeline questioned.
"It's a recent development," he shrugged.
"Sure it is," she rolled her eyes. "Honestly, it's for the best."
"What?" Sirius asked, confused.
Adeline felt her heart breaking for what she was about to do.
"I said, it's for the best. I mean, we wouldn't have worked in the long run," she shrugged.
"What?" Sirius repeated.
"Sirius, you said we should date other people. I don't understand why you're so upset at me for doing the exact same thing that you are. I don't want to be with someone who's going to be hypocritical and not be honest with me about what he actually wants," Adeline stated. "Did you really think that we would all be able to run away and there would be no issues when you asked to bring your other girlfriend along?"
"You don't want to be with me?" he asked, brows raised.
"Not really," she told him, shrugging. "You're childish and possessive and, as I said, hypocritical. It's rather nasty to watch. I'm tired of being treated so poorly by you all of the time. It's not fair. I have plenty of other people treating me like shit, I don't need my significant other to do it as well."
"So, you want the guy with way too many siblings who thinks it's attractive that people find you terrifying? Which is a rightful terror as well, all things considered."
"Will you just stop?" Adeline yelled the question. "You don't get to stand there and tell me that I'm a terrible person followed by telling me that I'm the only one for you, which is a lie obviously since I walked around a corner and found you about to makeout with another woman. You weren't even man enough to tell me about her when I asked you about her before."
"So a Hufflepuff is better for you?"
"Honestly, almost anyone is better for me."
The two stood there in silence, just staring at each other.
"So, that's it then?" he asked. "Adeline, if I walk out that door, I'm not coming back. I'm not kissing you during party games or protecting you from the Gryffindors that think you're a dark witch rising. I'm not sending you poems or drawing you pictures of flowers anymore. All of that is done."
Adeline reached into her shirt and pulled the key free. After lifting the chain over her head, she stepped forward. She held the chain up for Sirius. He reached for it, taking it carefully. He stared at the key before looking to her. His face morphed to hurt and he rushed pass her, leaving the door open as he went. Adeline waited until she heard his footsteps leave the hall before she moved to close the door. She put the charms on her room before grabbing her journal and writing to Severus, telling him what she'd done.
She sank to the ground, sobbing harder than she ever had before. She knew she'd done the right thing, but she didn't want to do the right thing anymore. She wanted her Siri, the boy who sent her poetry and sat under the stars with her. She wanted the boy that flew her to a park when she needed air and who picked out the name of their children.
The hardest part was that she hadn't even been lying when she'd spoken to him and she knew it. She knew she deserved better than someone who spoke to her the way that he did, who tried to ruin her chances with other people. She deserved better than someone who acted the way that he did. It didn't make it any easier as she cried on the floor.
She felt arms wrap around her and she tried to fight against it for a moment before realizing who was there. She leaned into Severus' hold as Reggie sat behind them, arms moving around the both of them. She sobbed loud and ugly, hating herself and hating Sirius and hating everyone and everything else in the world as her heart fell apart.
