Operation: Harry & Hermione
A/N: So this one is inspired by the idea that true love can see through the enchantments of Polyjuice, and takes place at the beginning of The Deathly Hallows.
Hermione pulled on her Harry jacket and quickly placed the replica of his glasses on her face, letting out a relieved sigh as the blurriness subsided. Harry's vision was truly awful.
She looked around the room, amused by the awkward and confused versions of Harry that now surrounded her. The polyjuice potion had worked and they were ready for Phase 2 of Operation: Seven Potters.
Oddly enough, the most confused of the lot was the actual Harry, whose eyes seemed solely focused on her. Had she put her shirt on backwards?
"Something wrong?" she asked.
"I don't think you drank enough. I can still see you," he declared before immediately realizing no-one else in the room shared his concern.
Her heart leapt into her throat. She had shuttered those thoughts…the thoughts of Harry truly seeing her…for the last few years, but apparently magic had other plans. She glanced around the room and saw several faces now looking at her knowingly. Moody's eyes were laser focused while Bill and Fleur looked on in amusement.
She lurched forward and whispered in Harry's ear.
"Don't worry, it worked," she informed. "I'll explain everything once we get to the Burrow."
She pulled back to see Harry inspecting her closely. He really did have the loveliest eyes.
"If you say so," he replied casually, still wholly unaware of his monumental revelation. Hermione did her best to not focus on the unbelievable momentousness of the situation. That could wait until they survived their trip. First they would get to safety and then she would talk to Harry. Immediately.
"Everyone ready?" Moody asked in annoyance, shaking his head at the sentimentality of it all.
You have no idea, Hermione mused as she headed for the door.
Hermione waited nervously for Harry to emerge. The guests were due to start arriving soon and Harry had disappeared a few minutes with Moody for his polyjuice transformation.
Her relief at finally confronting Harry with her feelings and explaining his unconscious feelings toward her had been life altering. She kept catching Harry stealing glances at her the last few days and their midnight rendezvous the prior evening under the invisibility cloak had reinforced that Harry's consciousness of his feelings for her had risen considerably.
Until that morning.
That morning he had seemed nervous and distracted once again. There were no soft smiles when she caught him looking her way…only uneasiness. His nervousness seemed to increase throughout the morning and Hermione found her uneasiness growing as well.
He's scared of you getting hurt and is going to try to pull away again, her inner voice screamed. She purposely ignored it. Harry was stuck with her now whether he realized it yet or not.
She heard the creaking of the stairs and looked to see Moody followed by 'Cousin Barney'. While Moody looked at her in quiet consideration Harry looked terrified, like he was fighting the urge to sprint back up the stairs.
Harry waited for Moody to trudge out of the room before turning back to look at her.
"So how do I look?" he asked hesitantly.
"Fishing for compliments now, Harry?" she joked, reaching for his hand.
Harry looked as if a two ton weight had been taken off his shoulders. "So you can still see me, then?
"Of course. It works both ways after all," she answered, silently celebrating the return of Harry's soft smile.
"I was just worried that you only thought that-" he began before stopping himself. "Never mind, I was being stupid."
And suddenly it all became clear. "You don't ever need to worry about that, Harry," she murmured, pulling him into a hug.
"I know," he muttered, a hint of uncertainty returning once again despite his best efforts. Hermione hated the damage that the Dursleys had caused. Despite him saying the words out loud, she knew he still didn't truly believe them.
She pulled herself even closer and stood on her tiptoes.
"You never need to worry about that, Harry. I love you more than you could imagine," she whispered in his ear. "That will never change."
She pulled him closer as he shuddered a breath. She had so much work to do.
They remained in that position for several moments…Harry holding onto her like a lifeline…she on her tiptoes and doing her damnedest to get as close to him as possible. There were so many terrifying unknowns in their future, but having this wonderful bit of her future sorted was overwhelming.
"They need us to help set up the chairs," she eventually informed, pulling him toward the kitchen.
Those terrifying future unknowns still needed to be dealt with, but all of that was on hold for the next few hours. That evening was going to be dedicated to raising Cousin Barney's consciousness of her as much as humanly possible.
