Renji stared at the place where his King had been standing a moment before, and then cast a sideways look at Ichigo. "You know," he offered conversationally, "as his bodyguard, I should be pitching a fit right about now."

All Byakuya had ever known was duty. An endless chain of duty and obligation, responsibility and accountability, of never living for himself. It numbed him, after a while.

The plan was flawless. The only thing that Urahara had forgotten to account for in his seduction of Kurosaki Ichigo was, it seemed, Kurosaki Ichigo himself. Crackish.

"Who am I?" He paused, hesitating, then turned a fond, heartbreaking smile on the grave. "Just a stupid boy, who loved a dying man."

"Well," he says, voice carefully measured, "I could stab him with Zangetsu, train him for shikai, and then check to see if Nejibana appears, but I don't think that's the best method to use on a child."

Shiro had chosen the drugs over him. Ichigo had been abandoned far too much over the course of his life to forgive something like that.
