(Present Day)

Callum knew one thing and one thing only. He was seriously going to talk to his Stepfather on his ways of "Surprising" his sons.

He had decided, - Well, strongly convinced is better suited -, to go to Xadia for an art exhibit being held in the Capital, The Silvergrove. The "Strongly Convinced" part was, well, his Stepfather Harrow grabbing him, figurately, by the neck and tossing him on a ship to Xadia. His reasoning behind that?

'Callum, I love you but not everything in life revolves around your books. You need to go out more, explore the wonders of Art in the real world. Not on a page.' Before he could even protest, His father has already slapped a ticket in his hand and shoved him into a car that was bound to the seaport. The ship he was on, The Lux Aurea, was on a schedule for a weeklong round-trip to Xadia. Once the ship docks, the ship will stay docked for a week in the Xadian port before making its voyage back to America.

Callum didn't mind that he was going on the trip. Granted, Harrow could have surprised him in a different way instead of tossing him on the ship, so to speak. But Callum knew it was simply him trying to push him into being more open and extroverted. A part of him silently agreed that he needed to improve on those two things.

He was currently leaning on the handrail of the massive ship, swiping a bead of sweat off his head. While it wasn't too hot, the fact he was wearing his blue cardigan in the weather made it a bit warmer for him. He had decided to escape the room he was in to take in the views of the sea. Opening his sketch book, he began to draw what was in front of him. The sun was beginning to set for the evening, turning the blue sky into colors of orange and pink that complimented the dark blue sea. Smiling, he was enjoying the silence that was around him, the only noise was the waves crashing against each other. He enjoyed being by himself with the silence….

Until he heard fast paced steps that was coming up from behind him quickly. Before he could even turn around, someone ran right next to him and started throwing up all their contents into the sea. The stench and the noise made him feel slightly ill. The individual in question continued to throw up, while Callum gave her a look of slight disgust, but he felt bad for her.

"Um…Excuse me…Are you ok?" he asked softly, already knowing the answer. The individual held up a finger as a sign to hold on, while she continued to throw up. Feeling of awkwardness began to creep in for him, and while he wanted to help, his nerves were telling him to walk away. There wasn't much he could do, but he still wanted to try. The figure wiped her arm across her mouth to get the excess of throw up off her face and she turned to Callum.

He was taken aback at how…. beautiful she was. Besides the bits of thrown up food on her chin and the stench of her breathe slightly hitting his face. But, besides those minor things, he was in awe of her. She wore dark blue jeans with black combat boots, which was complimented by a dark blue long-sleeved shirt and a dark blue jacket.

Her eyes were the biggest thing that stood out for him, light purple. Which were also complimented by her white hair that was tied in a bun. If she couldn't tell already, he was slightly drooling.

"Sorry 'bout that. Boats and water aren't exactly my favorite things in the world." She murmured before holding back another round of bile that puffed in her cheeks. She quickly turned around again to the ocean and emptied her stomach contents into the blue water below.

Callum took note of how thick her accent was and found it rather nice. Gently tapping his book, he waited again for her to be finished until he could speak.

"Um….do you need anything?" He asked gently, not wanting to provoke another throwing up session from her. The woman wiped her hand over her mouth and continued to look down in the water.

"Not unless ya got medicine for sea sickness on ye." She groaned, her face turning a dark sickly green. But, what surprised her was when the man next to her reached into his bag and pulled out a small box and a bottle of water.

"My father recommended this to me while I'm on this voyage. But it looks like you need them more than I do." He handed the box and water to her. Burping down another round of throw up, she quickly grabbed the box and tore it open. Quickly swallowing two of the small white tablets, she grabbed the bottle and gulped every ounce of water down. Callum just stared with wide eyes and chuckled slightly at the sight of her being feral for sea sickness meds. After waiting a bit for her stomach to settle, she stood up and stuck out her hand.

"Thank ya. If it wasn't for the meds, I woulda been throwin' up everythin' until we reached Xadia. Names Rayla by the way, and who might you be? My savior from sea sickness must have a name." She giggled slightly, and Callum blushed. He reached out and shook her hand.

"My name is Callum, I'm just glad I was able to help." He couldn't help but blush the entire time as he was meeting this young lady. This was his first time interacting with a woman. Well, scratch that, interacting with a woman that wasn't Claudia or anyone he had to work with. Meeting a woman like her, a beautiful one at that, was definitely new territory for him.

"Uh, ya can let go now if ya want." Not realizing he held her hand for far too long, he immediately retracted his hand.

"Uh- um I-I'm sorry." She raised an eye brow.

"Socially awkward much I presume?" She asked. Callum nodded, preferring to be honest.

"Well, let's fix that then shall we. I was about to head ta dinner if ya want to join me. Consider it a thank ya gift for helping me." Before he can give a response, she grabbed him by the arm and squeezed it gently.

"Say yes." Was all she said to have Callums mind turning. Rayla didn't know who he was, and yet here she was offering him dinner. He had no idea how to respond….other than what she said to say.

"Yes." She smiled softly at his response and let go of his arm. Gazing at him for a few seconds, she nodded.

"Great! It's a date." Rayla immediately went wide eyed and blushed hard, as did Callum, who also hilariously started nose bleeding after that comment.

"Uh…..Where can I meet you?" He asked, still bewildered at the comment. Rayla found herself unable to answer that question, the words all being jumbled up in her mouth. Why did it become so hard to answer a simple question? She wondered.

"M-Meet at the dinning hall at 6pm? I'll come find ya if ya get lost." She suggested, while also reaching into her pocket and giving Callum a handkerchief. He took it and started applying pressure to his nose, hoping to stop the bleeding.

"I'll meet you there, Rayla." Her name made him feel as though there were butterflies in his stomach. Whoever this woman was, he'll find out soon at dinner. He really wanted to know more about her.

"See ya soon. Thanks again, hero of sea sickness." She turned and walked back into the ship. Callum swore she gave a little more sway in her hips.

'NO. BAD CALLUM' He internally chastised himself. After making sure no more blood was coming out of his nose, he took one more look at the sea before making his way back inside.

Though, one thought remained between them both.

What in the actual fuck just happened.

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed my first chapter of Love At a Distance. I do hope you all stick around for more to come. See ya later!
