Chapter 1: The Beginnings

"I think it's time to call her in. You know she would get pissed if you didn't call her." Austin said to the woman behind the desk.

Sara, a 36-year-old woman was sitting down looking over documents trying to avoid the conversation, knowing that she would have to face it sooner than later.

With a sigh Sara said, "Fine, but I am not holding my breath on this one, it may be easier if I just fly out and see her face to face. She's going to be pissed just seeing me."

Austin let out the breath he was holding, "I'll book you on the first flight out."

18 hours later in Shibuya District, Japan

"Mai, Tea!" A shout was heard throughout the office.

Mai, 18-year-old female, got up from her desk and went to the kitchen to make her boss and secret crush his order for earl grey tea.

After making three cups of tea, Mai first walked to Lin's office. She knocked on the door and entered when she heard the man call out, "Enter".

"Hey Lin, I made you some tea and a client will be coming in soon." Mai told the man who was steadily typing on his laptop.

***Front Door Chimes***

"I guess I spoke too soon," Mai chuckles "I'll go get Naru on my way to greet the customer."

Lin simply nods his head in agreement while he is finishing up what he was doing on the laptop, saving the document, and opening a new one for the customer's request.

Before he stood up, he looked over a small picture that he had on his desk. 'I miss you.' He thought standing up and got ready to go to the reception area.

Mai, after leaving the office, calls out to the customer, "One moment and I will be with you."

Mai goes to Naru's office and knocks on the door then opens it. "Naru, the client is here, and I have your tea."

Naru looks up from his desk, "Okay."

Naru stands up and moves to the door and his assistant, she gives them the tea and they walk out to the reception together.

Once they got into the reception area Mai starts, "Hello! Welco-".

She abruptly stops and stares at the woman before her. As she was staring, her grip loosened on the tray and last cup of tea, and they both crash on the ground.

"Sara," Mai whispers.

Before Mai, a woman with long, maroon hair and brown eyes stood. She was wearing a pair of black skinny jeans with a black top and a leather jacket, on her feet were a pair of black platform boots with chains hanging off the side. She had a pair of glasses on her face and a sad smile on her face. "Hello Mai! How are you?"

Mai starts to gather tears in her eyes. "Wh-what are y-yo-you doing here?"

Sara's eyes glaze over, "Silly, silly girl. I'm here for you. A promise is a promise after all."

Mai runs and jumps on Sara, while Sara just holds onto Mai and whispers into her ear. "Did you really think I wouldn't keep my promise? You silly girl, I'll always come back for you. All you had to do was call and I would be there in a heartbeat."

Mai just sobs into her shoulder while Sara is holding her.

A cough is heard over Mai's sobs, "Can you please explain why my assistant is a sobbing mess?"

Sara looks up and see a man a little older than Mai standing there looking concerned for his assistant.

"I'm sorry that may be my fault. I haven't seen Mai in a few years. My name is Lin, Sara, it's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance."

Sara bowed her head since she couldn't properly bow, as she was holding a sobbing Mai.

Mai's sobs soften and Sara leads her to the couch and sits her down, and softly sings a song that she knows always gets Mai to laugh.

(Sara)

Another paranormal upset

Done a hundred calls or more like this.

Barely break a sweat

(Mai starts wobbly)
You know I'd rather not go in there
All the creepy, crawly freaks and phantoms, oh!

This isn't fair!

(Sara)
Whether a ghost or ghoul we got you
Round em up and chase em out bustin' haunts is what we do.

(Mai sounds more confident)
But this one looks way dark and scary!
Maybe just this once we turn a job down
Please sis, be more wary

Looming ahead on the hill
Things are unnaturally still
Air's got a shivering chill
My heart pounds, oh what a thrill!

Left alone to rot away
Shadows dancing on the wall

(Mai)
It really makes me feel uneasy
All the creaking croaks and creepy critters, oh!
Makes me rather queasy

(Sara)
I think I hear it up ahead there
Get a grip and straighten up sis its
Time now to prepare

(Mai)
How 'bout instead we quickly reroute?
Could be anything at all behind that door
I don't care to figure out

Whispers and sounds everywhere
Suddenly right over there

Mai bursts out laughing at the end and they both fall back onto the couch.

"See, I always know how to get you to laugh. Always have and always will." Sara chuckles looking at Mai.

"Well duh, that's why you're my best friend, older sister, and mom all in the same person." Mai tells Sara, then she realizes where they were, and she started blushing and looked at her boss. "Oh, sorry Naru! As she said this is Me- wait did you say Lin, Sara?" Mai gave Sara a look before continuing, "She is my mother. Mom, this is my boss, Kazuya Shibuya."

Sara looks at Naru, "Hello, again. Now that the drama bug is gone, I asked for an appointment because I wanted to see if you wanted to collab with me and my company on an investigation."

"Not interested." Naru said, "Now if that is all you had to come here to say, I have more important work to do."

"Not even when it's the President of the United States requesting the help?" Sara smirked.

Naru looked at Sara sharply, "What do you mean? Wait let me get my other assistant."

While all this drama was going on no one noticed the man that was sitting there with a laptop and was just blankly staring at Sara due to shock.

"Oh Lin-san! I am so sorry; I didn't even realize you were there!" Mai shouted realizing in all the chaos she forgot Lin walked to the reception area before she went and got Naru.

They all turned to Lin to see him looking pale while looking at Sara. Sara finally looked at the other assistant and froze, turning pale as well.

"Hello, Koujo. It's been a while, hasn't it?" Sara barely says above a whisper trying to collect herself.

Lin just sat there staring, his mind in a whirlwind of emotions thinking back to every event that occurred with Sara. Then, he blinked as if coming back to himself and he cleared his throat and said, "Hello, Sara. It has."

Naru and Mai just glace between them wondering what is going on now, while Naru is also including, 'Just who is this woman'.

Sara just ignores Lin and looks at Naru holding up a piece of paper, "Like I said a collab between my company and yours, by the request of the President of the United States. He has requested that we go to Galveston, Texas in the United States and investigate the entire city. Of course, food, lodging, and all expenses will be paid for, and the investigation is slated to last about 3 months. They are evacuating the entire city and of course the payment for this is hefty. Also, because I know what happened to your twin, if you accept, I can see about bringing him back to life, and helping you with your powers to where you can use them, and they won't hurt you ever again without needing your twin around. If you don't want to the choice is yours, but if you decline, I will be taking my daughter back with me, and she sure as hell won't be coming back here."

"Wait, daughter, Mai, I thought you were an orphan." Naru looks at Mai.

"Taniyama, Mai is an orphan. Lin, Mai is not" Sara explains. She then whispers something under her breath thinking no one heard her, "Even if in all actuality her father was an asshole who cheated and walked out on me."

A sharp intake of breath was heard, but no one looked to see where the source came from. "Her father wasn't around when Mai was growing up and didn't know about her no matter how many times I tried to get in contact with him, so to Mai, he's dead." Sara proceeds to explain. "When she was 12, she wanted to go to Japan and at the time I couldn't go with her, so I permitted brief custody to a close friend of mine, and they came to Japan with Mai in tow with a new last name. When my friend passed away due to a home invasion, Mai begged to stay here, and I consented as long as I got weekly updates. Flash forward and we are here."

"So, Mai isn't Japanese?" Naru stated.

"Heaven's no, she is half Chinese and half American, just like her two brothers. She is the third part of triplets. I'm just lucky she looks and takes more after me than her father. My sons are the ones who took after their father." Sara stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

More choking could be heard. Finally getting tired of it the trio looked to the cause and saw Lin looking like he would pass out, and it made Naru and Mai concerned considering they had never seen anything that could shake the seemingly stoic man.

"Lin-san are you okay?" Mai asked in concern.

"Lin?" Naru asked.

"I think we need to talk, don't you Koujo?" Sara said, and Koujo just nodded.

"My office?" Lin asked.

"Sure"

The two stood up and walked to Lin's office. Lin opened the door and let Sara enter first then firmly shut the door and a lock could be heard, then silence.

Naru and Mai just looked at each other. "I wonder what that is about." Mai started.

Naru just looked at Mai and stood up, trying to rack his brains around what he already figured out, but didn't want to be true, 'I need to call my parents'. He then proceeded to walk to his office, "When they get out let me know, I have some business to take care of. Oh, and tea." He then shut the door before Mai could respond.

Mai just shrugged it off and went to the office and made tea for Naru, not knowing this was going to be a long day.
