Chapter 3: Contenders
With diminishing numbers of grimms, the wyvern was pushed to the frontline. This is it, their final push. The Wyvern's is before them, its imposing figure pushed the card soldiers to their limits. The wyvern completely overwhelmed them as it ignored their barricade and slowly crawled towards the academy entrance.
The now unrestrained grimms at the front rushed their way to Port and Oobleck who was guarding Nursery from the sidelines. Fortunately that's not the issue with them as She believed they could handle the few remaining grimm left on their own, But it left Glynda to handle the other problem.
Glynda focused her sight on the wyvern. Should they kill it, grimms will stop coming out. Quickly changing the dust repository of the disciplinary, she used her semblance to lift up chunks of small rubbles and infused with fire dust. Hails of burning shards rained on the wyvern shredding and burning its oozing skin, effectively inhibiting its grimm producing ability.
But just as when everything started to get better. Beastial roars came from behind The Wyvern. It was a group of boarbatusks, ursas, and beowolves with alphas mixed upon them. They climbed from the other side of the wyvern. They were the last remaining grimms who had been pushing wyvern from the back. But with all the attack she had dealt, they chose to leave the wyvern's defense in favor of attacking the human as soon as her fiery hailing attack stopped.
Glynda realizes that she may had overlooked the grimms, thinking all of them were charging to the side. She didn't expect there's still a handful left on the back. With such close proximity, Glynda moved aside to avoid the boarbatusks initial rolling attack.
The unrelentingness of alpha boarbatusk proved itself as it ran to a stone structure in hope of quickly changing its trajectory. Glynda saw his attempt and quickly hauled a Boulder to disturb its movement by breaking the structure.
Before the structure collapsed, the alpha boarbatusk already sent itself rolling midair. It landed further away from its intended location, but it had enough angle to return to its rolling stance barreling quickly towards Glynda.
Glynda sidestepped, easily avoiding the alpha boarbatusk with a give of explosion from the remaining fire dust she had left with her weapon.
Yet it put her in a pinching position. The group of boarbatusks at the back and the recovering alpha boarbatusk along with the rest of the grimms in front of her.
"This is.. Troublesome."
She turned to the side at Peter's group, finding them gaining upper hand on the grimms. It would take a while before they could help her in any way shape or form, time that she wouldn't have.
Glynda hoped that Fujimaru had quickly done their business. The least they could have done now was to go around and retreat back to base. The only way- now was to play this quickly. Despite her flickering aura, she raised her weapon high to the sky. A large circle area attack on her surroundings should deter both sides of attackers.
She's The Headmistress of Beacon after all.
'when did I drop the 'acting' part..' Glynda thought bemusedly, Feeling as alive as she ever could. Artificially created storm clouds gathered on the sky around her as she prepared her gambit-
That's when a large booming sound could be heard traveling past her as seconds later a javelin was thrown at the alpha boarbatusk. The javelin was cracked in several crevices where black discoloration spread into its golden base.
A humanoid figure had launched themselves and kicked the stucked javelin, punching a hole that strikes through the alpha's reinforced body.
Glynda was able to take a glimpse and catch the identity of the person behind that attack. It was the person that resembled someone she had known in the past. Although Her appearance was different then what she was before.
The state of her weaponry, her black-clad armor with red accent, and white pony tail hair that flew freely across the grimm infested ground.
"Pyrrha?.."
Glynda muttered in shock as 'Pyrrha' turned in response and met her gaze before returning to face the grimm. Her eyes met an expressionless eye that 'Pyrrha' currently had. To see her fighting in front of her in such a twisted appearance felt horrifying.
'What had Chaldea done?'
It was the sentiment she felt as she watched Pyrrha launch herself forward, thrusting her javelin to pierce an alpha ursa and shooting from the rifle end of her javelin to dig her weapons deeper. She swung down the now transformed xyphos to cleave the ursa in half.
'Grim.. '
Pyrrha stood still in the middle of combat. She checked her handling of the sword. It felt different, the swing just now used too much power than necessary. Its excessiveness made it unwieldy. In frustration she clicked her tongue.
'I can't adjust this mana with my aura!'
Yet, her current conditions didn't exactly provide any chance of experimentation. Grimms closing in on her found themselves skewered by a pair of chains with a sharp spike at the end that manifested from underneath her shadow. It moved erratically, skewering any grimms unfortunate enough to meet its way.
'Grimm.. Grimm…'
She grabbed her xyphos firmly to send a wide slash that culled a row of grimm that once again foolishly tried to close in.
'Tch..Too much'
She thought as the slash had caused the already cracking xyphos to break into pieces. The excess explosive power released from the combination of her aura, mana, and exposed dust obliterated clusters of grimms in a fan shape area.
Now rid of her weapon some of the surviving grimm had converged their attack towards her. She could fend one of them with her shield but without Miló, it'll be hard when there's tens of them. Her other choice would be her semblance yet when she tried it on the chains they still moved uncontrollably instead of responding to her semblance.
As Grimm's closing in on her, their attack was interrupted by a sweeping cloud that caught them in ice. Pyrrha turned to face her old vice headmistress. She had quickly dealt with boarbatusks on the back at the cost of her shattering aura from over-using her semblance. Glynda opened her mouth without missing a beat.
"I don't know whether you are really Pyrrha or not. But if you are truly the help that chaldeans spoke of then, come help us!"
Pyrrha nodded in respone. She grabbed the air and exercised her spiriton to once again manifest Miló on her hand. The following sweep attack cut-through several grimms and also the ground around her.
"Too wide"
She tried once again to balance the coursing Mana and the radiating aura in her body at the same time. It felt like hand calisthenic training without using any hands.
An alpha ursa managed to get close to her past the ice and erratic moving chain. It was blocked breaths away, but not without leaving a scratch to her torso with its claws in defiance. The cut was protected by her aura but it riled up something else inside her.
'Grimm.. Grimm.. Grimm!'
[Avenger] as the attack had affected her class-skill, 'Pyrrha' felt her insides were churning, burning her from within.
"Haagh!"
She grunted, breathing heavily as she tried to balance herself. Servants don't need breathing yet as her consciousness wavered, old habits began to seep in.
She hoisted her xyphos to deliver a wayward slash that opened her route forward. It didn't matter to her if it destroyed her weapon once more as metal scraps flung past her face.
Manifesting another Miló into a javelin and using its rifle function, Pyrrha launched herself barreling up to the sky after running on top of a nearby ice ramp. Her target was the Wyvern, Her mind was screaming for her to kill it.
"die-"
She threw her javelin directly at the Wyvern, hitting its body and sending him back several meters away until it was caught by the searing chains. The impact caused the javelin to break and expose its dust content. What followed was a giant fire dust explosion, empowered by her aura and large chunk of her mana. It engulfed the wyvern and its surroundings, Including the floating jellyfish that had followed the horde's attack.
'...'
With her silence returned, 'Pyrrha' manifested another Miló and turned her gaze to see her summoner walking outside with a fellow servant. They stood witnessing the aftermath of her action. She felt her mouth slightly curve upward.
"Servant Avenger, You Finally Awaken Master"
She spoke brimming with pride of her work. A job well done, achieving an absolute victory. No one is hurt, no one is lost. Yet to the outside perspective it was a chilling proclamation more fitting of a tool rather than that of a human.
Her flat tone, lifeless yellow eyes, and the everpresent dreadful feeling she exuded paired with a slight rueful grin put everyone into a numbing silence. Her old vice headmistress-now headmistress was looking at Fujimaru Ritsuka with a mixture of bewilderment and horror.
Ritsuka understood the look on her face. The face that painted Gilles and the French people watching their saint had returned as the dragon witch. Yet, this time there's nothing He could do. Said dragon witch is on their side. He felt that the negotiations will be trickier than he expected moving onward.
At Novum Chaldea,
Jingle Able Meuniere, Chaldea's coffin operator stood with all Chaldean higher ups before the coffin Fujimaru Ritsuka used to rayshift. Da Vinci, who had retreated to her workshop was the last one to come along with her assistant, Nemo Nurse.
"I heard that something happened to Fujimaru, what's wrong."
Meuniere turned away from his terminal.
"The coffin had detected a spike of activity in Ritsuka's soul."
'How does servant summoning cause damage to his soul?!'
To Da Vinci, such situation was not unexpected. Yes- Ritsuka had overexerted his Mana circuits in the previous missions, which would've killed him several times over. No, the issue was how strongly it reacted this time, enough to bring him to a sudden unconsciousness shock. The question is now, whether or not this would negatively affect his health moving forward.
"The servant may have done something."
Da Vinci turned to her assistant.
"Nurse, Had Sion completed the servant's reading ?"
The servant began to communicate between the network of Nemos.
"partially,.. And yes, She was also thinking of provisional skill."
Da Vinci received the subsequent paper on the servant and confirmed the servant's capabilities.
"Does the servant provide such skill?"
"more or less.. it's still a theory, The world's population use of Odic-like life force as a source of power, Aura was it? Based on the book Fujimaru provided, It has the property to be activated by exposing other people's aura to an individual soul. Our guess, it happened during the contract formation when Fujimaru exposed his soul."
"To spread like that…Such a reliable method."
Da Vinci turned to Meuniere who's keeping the diagnosis in Fujimaru's soul.
"Meuniere, will this change potentially have any negative affect on his health?"
"Unlikely, the sudden impact may just jolt his soul and depending how it flowed it could damage his mana vein. But Ritsuka bursted his mana vein several times before, He'll repair themselves with some rest."
Goredolf found the answer acceptable. Still, they need to be careful.
"Humu… does this aura keep being generated until his soul until it drains up? Is there a way to reverse or at least prevent that from happening?"
"We don't know about nullifying, but as for the soul itself, Its stated that Aura not only capable of draining but also capable of nourishing the soul itself."
"Humu.. Humu, we will keep monitoring as it goes on. Send any servant that handle souls if needed"
"That's how it went, Fujimaru. Do you understand what it means?"
After the battle at Beacon, things started to get resolved as the huntsmen from the city's base arrived at the academy. With the extra human power gained, Glynda began the effort of securing Beacon Academy from grimms and continued the restoration projects.
They never really talk after the fight as Ritsuka allowed himself and the others to be guided to one of the dorm rooms, while letting Glynda process things on her own. He believed they'll come to them when they are ready.
The room itself was slightly dusty yet with a small cleaning done it became a comfortable living space with 4 beds, a common room, and a bathroom. The plumbing and electricity is still not working but it's better than nothing at least.
"Yes, I'll take it easy for a while then.."
"Good, we will continue to closely monitor your conditions. Be on the lookout if any change happens okay?."
With the report ended Ritsuka laid his body on the bed, but then sat back up as he remembered someone that he needed to address. And it was the new addition to his servant roster.
"Forgive me for causing inconvenience to you, Master. While I do believe having your aura unlocked will help to keep yourself safe in this world, but I'll demanifest myself back to spirit form as punishment-"
He reached his hand forward to stop her from doing anything drastic. .
"No, no! it's alright, it's something that you don't expect to happen. I'm alright, see?"
Ritsuka gestures to his body from top to bottom… Before recomposing himself.
"I suppose we start by an Introduction, My name is Fujimaru Ritsuka, Master of Chaldea. Along with me are servants that I contracted with."
Everybody also joined in introducing themselves.
"Mash Kyrielight, servant shielder, nice to meet you"
"Nursery Rhyme, servant Caster. Nursery is Alice, and Alice is Also Nursery. Nice to meet you too."
"Very well- My name is Pyrrha Nikos, Servant Avenger. I suppose, I am what you classified as an alter servant. Please call me Pyrrha, or Pyrrha alter if you had to."
'How weird, I couldn't recall my original self very well.'
"From the moment I was summoned, I gained the information regarding your journey, Grand Order."
A subtle smile appeared as her cold ever stoic face began to soften.
"You have gone through quiet an arduous journey, Master. despite being that of a regular human you managed to achieve something monumental."
Her acknowledgement was shown through a slight increase in her tone.
"Very well, I accept you as my master."
'I'll be your weapon and your shield who shall reign vengeance towards your enemies, it'll be delivered by cold iron.'
Ritsuka was embarrassed by her praises. his previously pale face slightly gained its color as it went red.
"Thank you for coming to us, its also because of my servants I could go this far."
Ritsuka then remembered,
"Speaking about that, can you disclose some information of this world? It'll be helpful if you can provide us with some information. Since we come to vale-"
Ritsuka briefly walked her through the serial chains of events that lead to her summoning. Pyrrha attentively listened but frowned as he reached the end.
"-and that's when we summon you."
"You did well in helping out my old teachers, Master. From the depths of my heart I'd be thankful, but I'd be more reluctant to help them any more than this."
She continued..
"Previously it's only fair since you used them to summon me. But any more than that would be counterproductive to our effort."
"Oh, mind telling us why?"
Projection of Sion came into view next to Ritsuka, cutting her off as she was about to explain her reason. Taking a handful of breaths she continued her expression.
"Since creatures of grimms aren't exactly an unnatural presence in this world."
Pyrrha began to explain what she had known about the world both from what is left recorded in her altered spirit origin and what information she had supplied as a servant.
As she finished, Sion appeared to have an epiphany on her mind.
"Grimms folktale, huh. . I thought I was familiar with the term, but I dismissed it thinking it was a naming coincidence."
"Grimm folktales?" Ritsuka asked Mash as he had never heard of the term before. But it was Nursery who answered.
"It's a collection of folk tales composed by the Grimm Brothers. It compiled the classic children stories like Rapunzel, The Red Riding Hood, and Cinderella."
Pyrrha Instinctively shuddered about the mention of that name, she held herself from being noticed.
To get the subject moving She continued..
"Yes, although it gives us clues of what it is we're dealing with, it doesn't really match what it entails. That's all it was, an allusion."
Pyrrha had a rare solemn feeling among her cold blunt nature.
A knock on the door prompted Ritsuka to open the door.
"Ah, Fujimaru Ritsuka-young man! Good to see you doing fine after the previous fight!."
He was greeted by Peter Port who was standing at the other side of the door.
"The pleasure is mine, Mr. Peter Port, sir. How may I help you?"
"Please, just call me Mr. Port when I am not teaching. As for why I came, first, it is because this fine individual wished to meet you."
Peter port makes way for the familiar faunus that he had met on the bullhead. His wild bluish gray tuffy hair, and the pair of dog ears protruding between his hat reminded him of-
'Patxi..'
Ritsuka realized he may had spoke his thought out loud. he quickly dismissed the thought.
"Hmm? Pardon?"
"-... No-Nothing, just remembering someone that I knew very well."
"Must be a very fine fellow if I may say so... Where was I? Right! Nice to meet you, I am Vinnie Artemisia. We met briefly on the bullhead before you suddenly jumped down. Forgive my sudden approach. I hope I didn't disturb you."
Ritsuka opened the door wider and walked outside to greet them.
"Ah, It's alright we were mostly doing nothing,"
"Then, I suppose I'll just cut to the chase. You see Me and the other engineers wished to offer our thanks by focusing on restorting the lighting and water."
"You sure? You are not going to blame us for attracting the wyvern on you?"
"While some did, they stopped after hearing you guys help taking it out, so all is good at the end of the day."
Intrigue by the proposal, Fujimaru asked.
".. How would I help exactly?"
"Most of the back end side of things has already been done. I am just here to help fine tuning on the other side. Although, that may require me to enter your room if you are okay with that."
Ritsuka, pondered for other possible motives. but considering his options, he accepted. He moved away to let Vinnie move in.
"Very well, you may. What about you Mr. Port?"
"Ah, I well.. I thought of giving you this."
Port showed a metal container for packing foods in his hand. Although it was long since prepared. Ritsuka could still feel the warmth of the meal from the metal container as he received it.
"this is.."
"We met after lunch so I thought your group might haven't got any. This is some leftovers but it's still good to eat.. Since dinner is still hours away, I thought why not give it to you? You might be hungry."
Ritsuka eagerly nodded. He had to agree to what the man before him said, the temptation of a freshly cooked meal was too big for him to resist.
"Well, that's all that I wished to say. I'll see you again young man!"
Finishing his talk, Port turned away and walked briskly to the exit.
closing the door, Ritsuka returned to Mash along with Nursery at the common room who was gathering info from books that she had cataloged into a digital version, copyrights be damned. Sion also chimed in through a holographic display recording any information that she came across to be fed on Trismegistus II.
"Mr. Port brought us food. Mash, please help me set up the table."
Mash got up off the floor, and carried on with her task. Leaving Nursery who was staring intently at him.
"You too Nursery, please ask Pyrrha if she also wants to eat with us… you can continue reading after lunch, Okay?"
She went to the bedroom where Pyrrha was standing before a mirror.
"Come eat with us Pyrrha!"
Nursery tugged Pyrrha's sleeve urging her to join Ritsuka and Mash who were going to the pantry, looking for any cutlery available. Pyrrha returned her attention to the armor piece that she had manifested with.
"I am not hungry."
Nursery seemed crestfallen at Pyrrha's rejection as she silently stood beside her not intending to leave. Pyrrha felt the uneasy feeling of having a child pestering her for the first time as a servant, it was very effective as she was about to crumble.
It was then Fujimaru stumbled into the bedroom with plates on his hands, jokingly expecting it would turn out the way it was happening at the moment.
"Pyrrha, servants don't need to eat. You'll never feel hungry. but that doesn't mean you couldn't eat."
Pyrrha stared at Ritsuka for a good minute while he kept holding the stacks of plates in his hands. Sighing in defeat, She smirked at her meddlesome master.
"You are certainly a strange Master. ha..! Fine, I'll eat with you. Although don't cry when you feel your food is not enough, Master."
And so the day went by without any issue as sunsets arrived along with more and more bullheads landing at the academy. With the death of the wyvern it was bound that the council would be willing to sent more support in the restoration attempt.
It didn't appear that Glynda wished to meet him yet for the day. As Ritsuka received another meal delivered by another staff of beacon, who was working on security. Vinnie also excused himself after finishing his job.
Ritsuka let the girls take the shower first while they screened up for any bugs that may have been planted as a precaution with Nursery's bounded field. While he laid on the bed, perhaps the mana exhaustion, adrenaline, and full stomach had caught up to him as Ritsuka's vision began to waver and he was promptly knocked out for the day.
At the abandoned domain of the dark God,
Salem stood in an ominous room filled with Grimm fluid up to her knee. This was her experimentation room. She discovered a major disruption to her plans, not just one but a group of individuals capable of using magic. Not only that, that weapon one of them carried reeks of death. A potential release to her prison, but that's not the way out she wanted.
Salem composed herself. She should figure out countermeasures to their current problem. Powerful human warriors with magic that's not coming from ozma or any maidens. Her pawn was currently being sent away for missions. Except for grimms, there's effectively nothing she could send to crush them without changing her plan.
Salem received feedback from one the grimms she had directly controlled. A stranger had stepped on her domain. Never mind how they get in, They haven't done anything but killing any grimm that tried to get close.
'Who is it now?'
She opened the portal to where that person was located. There she stood before another person shrouded in a mysterious spatial shroud that hid their features. Besides their stature, she was unable to discern any characteristic out of him. She noticed how grimms in the vicinity were hesitant to approach him.
She used her usual tactic of intimidation.
"What do you think you are doing sneaking around a lady's lawn?"
"..."
The person didn't answer in question didn't answer.
How dare the human before her to ignore her,
Salem tried to point her hand towards him. Unleashing her magic in point blank range.
But before she could release any spark, her hand was cut in multiple places followed by several heavy swinging sounds. It transpired in less than a second before she could even register what had happened.
She didn't feel any pain, but instead an epiphany towards the sword that struck her hand. She trailed her eyes towards the person's hand. Salem could catch the golden hilt past the cloaking effect, Confirming her suspicion.
"Relic of Destruction-"
Salem goes on high alert as Another slicing sound. but the slash never came instead the figure had suddenly disappeared. Rage boils up in Salem's Mind.
"How dare that human?! How dare he enter my domain, cut me with Relic of Destruction, and leave like it's anybody's business."
She didn't bother wondering how they got out, the tear in space where that person was standing is already enough as a proof.
Calming herself, Salem took notice upon a golden cup being left on the ground. It was left slightly submerged in her grimm pool. Lifting the cup, she was immediately captivated by its golden luster and magical allure..

On an abyssal plane of desolate land, the furthest and most obscured by any place in Remnant, A land where no life is unable to survive nor unable to pass except for flowers made of glass. A woman clad on white robe stood by watching the occurring events along with a figure in the darkness.
"All Participants have begun their move, I hope you are ready, Fujimaru Ritsuka."
A snarky comment came from beyond the darkness, disrupting her monologue..
"He will, -no He had to, He always had to. Chaldea forced him to never fail after all. He's going to keep that mentality even if he's already at a breaking point."
The woman felt sympathy towards him.
"Poor boy.."
her servant however didn't share the same sentiment.
"unlike certain someone.."
"I didn't even get to do anything and I've been ousted already?!"
The woman's mysterious look suddenly crumbled as she protested the existence from outside of the domain beside her.
"It's your fault to begin with, summoning a divine spirit despite being a rookie master and a mage in less than a month? How daring of you."
"Gaaah you are the one who answered my summon."
The robed woman turned away and internally yelled in frustration of her luck
while the existence mockingly laughed at her ridiculous action.
"ah I felt better already, you always know how to get to someone's heart, master.
the woman was oblivious to her servant's broken sense of humor.
'I didn't even trying to be funny.'
"You are also the one who put us in this situation in the first place. You should'vd take responsibility"
"No way.. you make it like we just did 'that' kind of act, I am not paying the child support"
"You!"
Following several flowers being stomped and regrowth almost immediately, The woman calmed down. Sitting on a nearby rock she continued her dialogue back at the figure in the dark, finding no use in crying over spilled milk.
she tried to return to main topic at hand.
"Will he do it? From what you've said about him, he seems to be too good to cross that line."
The voice in the dark began to laugh even louder.
"Him? Good? Hehehe! Hahaha!!! That's the funniest joke you could ever tell me. He's the most prevalent one to break any taboo just to ensure Humanity's future. If a king must transcend good and evil, Then, that human is the most evil of them all- And you call him good?! hahaha! You are the best, Master"
ignoring her servant's rumbling, she managed to understand the original intentions.
If what her servant was saying is the truth, things would get hectic from now. She had to prepare to do her part. Yet still, she doubted the plan they had prepared would work.
"With how things are going, how come sending her to find him would be our best shot, Foreigner?"
like a switch being flipped, The servant, now revealed to be Foreigner responded seriously.
"it's not our best option... the best option would've let saber's master to acchieve their goal, but what entails after is what we agreed upon as the worse outcome."
"and about sending alter ego.."
"... The way he arrived here didn't exactly provide any leeway to get to our place. Thus, she will act as our bridge. We will need any ally we could get if we ever want to beat that saber and his master."
The Foreigner servant squirmed at the bad encounter that she had with the servant, the damage to her spirit core is still fresh in her memory as if it was yesterday-.
Her servant pushed her point once more.
"And now with Salem having the grail, we will need Chaldea's support more so than ever since it'll also be their problem, I feel like a mysterious informant in detective movies- I can't wait! it's too boring over here."
And with that Foreigner severed her mental connection as her phantom returned to recuperate inside the woman's body. but with it, another one took its place. Another servant approached her, physically this time. Long black hair, light clothing for ease of travel, A billhook machete along with its replacement, and A pair of silver eyes matching hers.
"You understand your mission, Obsidia?"
"Yes, I shall find the Master of Chaldea."
The woman hugged the servant she had summoned. Despite their contract, she had named and treated her like her own daughter in the short time that they had met.
"good luck and be careful."
They separated and reluctantly she lifted her hand forward from her robes. It revealed 3 lines resembling rose flower petals that were marked on her right fist. all but 1 line had lost its red shine. Her final command seal.
{By my command seal, I order you … return to remnant}
She murmured her command, as it ended another mental connection was cut. She was once again being left alone, no she voluntarily chose to be one. Sighing upon her predicament, She returned to watch the world above her. There she sat down among the flower field, glancing from the reverse side of the world.
