Omake: Gratitude for Eternity
Sitting around a campfire in the depths of the Dream, resting for a short time from their training, team RWBY and Penny were gazing up at the stars when Ruby finally broke the silence.
"You know, the stars are so different here. The night sky's so beautiful..." she trailed off into silence again, letting the stillness of the night return. After several more minutes, Penny spoke up.
"I wonder how far Mother travelled to reach Remnant. It must have taken many years." After a brief pause, she turned to cast a curious glance at the avatar of Obsidian. "Mother, what was it like? Could you show us?"
Yes. Is this something you all wish to experience?
Blake and Penny glanced at eachother, nodding decisively, a decision Ruby quickly followed. A moment later Yang shrugged and nodded as well. Finally, clearly resigned, Weiss nodded too. After a brief moment, the Dream shifted, fading out around them as Schala's form wavered and vanished, leaving the massive shell of Obsidian behind. As the surroundings filled with stars, a vast emptiness surrounding them, Blake climbed up the shell of Obsidian, the silence of the endless void consuming everything else. The stars drifted, slowly shifting around them, spinning and wheeling in strange kaleidoscopic patterns which seemed to flash past but may have taken decades to shift; without a point of reference, and only Obsidian's vast sense of time, the girls had no idea how long they drifted amongst the stars.
Eventually, after a timeless, drifting silence, a small point of light began to draw closer and closer, growing in size as they neared, finally prompting one of the girls to gasp in awe, though none of them would admit who it was. Finally, the planet of Remnant loomed large enough before them that they could clearly make out land masses, different though they might have been.
Unable to contain her awe any longer, Ruby's quiet "wow." was a sentiment they all shared.
"Obsidian... This. I..." She continued, fumbling over her words, before continuing. "It's beautiful, and so terrifyingly vast. It really, really puts into perspective everything we're doing, and everything we're fighting for. It's... We're all so small. None of us can do what you can, Obsidian. We can't just... wipe out a continent, or destroy a mountain, or fly through space or ...well, anything, really. But despite how small I am, how small we are... I'm going to protect it. I'm going to save everyone. We all are. And you're helping us so much with that." Ruby's face was covered with a blush as red as her cape as she pressed on, shyly scratching the back of her head as she did. "I guess what I want to say is... Thank you, Obsidian. For everything. I know I speak for all of us when I say that."
As the meteoric descent began, and the Dream began to fade back to the woods, Weiss was the most surprised when Obsidian replied.
You are all welcome.
