"Keep going, fellas! Once this is dug, we will have an operation of our own." Carter told Slim, Broughton, and several others, all of whom were from different barracks, in a way they were also going against Hogan's operation. But they didn't care. They were digging this tunnel. All of a sudden, Broughton, Slim, and Addison had to stop. What they saw made them stop. "Hey Andrew! We see a blue light! There is something down there!"
Andrew got up and looked down the ladder. They certainly weren't kidding. "Fellas, make sure to make this ladder long, and by that, put extra support on the bottom so it doesn't fall out from underneath me. He stated, sternly. Andrew Carter was going to see what was down there once the ladder had been properly adjusted. In the meantime, something was going on in Hammelburg. Something really big. But this wasn't something the Underground could do about, of course.
Major Wolfgang Hochstetter. That is a man many fear due to his temper and personality. He had been granted a furlough, but kept working, even while at a hotel in Hammelburg, However, this was different work. He was interested in his family's history. He knew about his immediate ancestors, which were his parents, his grandparents, and great grandparents, and so on. However something within him told him that something was off..and so he began looking into his ancestral past, more and more.
"It branches off..bah..wait a second. I never knew about these relatives. Wilhelmina Hochstetter…" as Wolfgang continued going down this part of the Hochstetter family tree. "Wait a second..what's going on here?" As Wolfgang continued down the list, a Hochstetter further down the line, John Hochstetter, moved to America and married an American woman, Rachel S. Carter. This left the Gestapo major shocked as he continued down the American branch. This book was leading him down a family tree he never knew he had.
"Andrew Carter..born 1913." Hochstetter snapped his fingers, his eyes wide as he processed this information. "I'm distant relatives with that…Carter at Stalag 13. I must pay a visit to the Stalag soon." Hochstetter soon closed the book, and then noticed the time. He had to get to the airport so he could fly to his destination. He was going skiing. This was quite certainly unusual, especially for a Gestapo major. But he was on leave, of course, so he could do what he wanted..err..not everything, though. He was not the Fuhrer. He was not the one in control of the country. However he did feel that if he was, World War II would already be over. The damage being done to Germany already was horrible. He personally believed that Poland did not antagonize Germany but, for the sake of his own life, he would not express his opinion publicly.
Meanwhile, Hogan was feeling a bit bad for how he treated Carter. He decided to head over to Barracks 4 to talk to him. Some prisoners caught sight of Hogan through the window and hurriedly closed up the tunnel entrance that was leading to something mysterious underneath the Stalag. "We had to close the tunnel up, Carter. Hogan is heading this way." Broughton told him. Carter didn't want to be bothered, but now he clearly was going to be bothered, by Hogan, which Carter felt was blatantly unsolicited.
Carter hurried into his quarters, just as Hogan entered the barracks. "Carter, there you are. I have to talk to you." The colonel approached the technical sergeant. Carter sighed and would turn around to see Colonel Hogan standing in his office/quarters. "Okay, Hogan, what do you want?" Carter crossed his arms, and had a face that seemed like it was scowling.
"Look..Carter, don't be so jumpy. I just came to say..well..I'm sorry. I may have been too hasty in siding with those two. But you punched those two. It was a joke..but you had your reasons to hit them, I guess." Carter seemed to look off in another direction, not wanting to hear it from Hogan. "Carter…are you even listening?" Hogan was getting agitated that Carter wasn't really paying attention to him speaking to him. But Carter had his right to not pay as much attention. After all, Hogan callously sided with Newkirk and LeBeau.
Carter snapped. "OF COURSE I'M LISTENING!" After saying that, he then calmed down after his outburst. He didn't want to yell, but just lost it after Hogan accused him of not paying much attention to what he was saying. "You don't understand how much I had to go through..putting up with them joking around with me and also putting my cap over my eyes..my love Mary Jane deserting me for some LOWLIFE who is an Air Raid Warden. Louis LeBeau was a great friend, and he had to joke and SIDE with Newkirk and cut me off."
Hogan sighed. He understood why Carter was mad. "I'm sorry..Carter. I really am. I'll go…talk to LeBeau and Newkirk." With that, Hogan left the barracks. Carter saw that the ladder was finished. Having the tunnel entrance opened, Carter's "help" then locks the ladder into place with the tunnel entrance. Opening it, Carter then began climbing down the hole, going to see what was down there.
A few of the men followed Carter into the hole. Down there was a place that looked..old. There was a fountain which had long been dried up. There were vines hanging over the concrete walls in this strange place underground. It did not look like it belonged there. It was truly a place lost in time. Andrew Carter continued wandering around the place. "Ouch!" He stumbled into the grass, which was somehow down there, a couple of miles beneath the surface.
Carter gets up following this as he looks down in front of him. There is a path, and a glowing object at the end of it. He would walk down it. As he got closer, he was shocked. There it was. A sword that was in a stone. This was quite a legendary object. Carter wondered how it got this far over in Germany. "Carter, did you figure out what this place is yet?"" Broughton asked, bringing Carter out of his thoughts.
"Uh, uh yeah. This appears to be a lost ruin from long ago. I have no idea why it's here. But..according to the inscriptions on the wall." Carter felt memories he had never had before surge within his mind. "Homo notus as Viridis Baronis, veniet ad imperium sancta imperialia regna…" Carter continued reading the latin. "Olim et futurum regem, quidam nomine Carter." Carter was surprised. He kept reading. "Maria Jana redibit ad Carter imperatricem coronari"
Carter was shocked by this. With his newly unlocked powers, he could understand the latin. He was mentioned in a prophecy that was foretold long ago.. "Carter Heres Arthuri Pendragon et progenies Camelot Ex Sioux." The latin ended right there. Carter..then goes on to explain to the prisoners that were helping him and watching. "I was foretold in a prophecy, Broughton, Addison, and Slim. I am descended not just from the Sioux..but also from King Arthur of Legend..and the other parts of the prophecy..well..you wouldn't believe them at all. I am foretold to come forth..as the Green Baron."
Carter then looked back at the sword. He swore he could hear it calling his name at that moment. He inched closer to the sword. Just as LeBeau, Hogan, and Newkirk were heading down the ladder. They saw what Carter was doing. "Cor Blimey, Carter, what are you doing? What is that-" Carter gripped the sword by its handle..and lifted it from the stone. In an instant, a shockwave on the surface went across all of Europe. The lands cried out in desperation, heard in Germany, heard in America, and heard in the United Kingdom.
In an instant, the lands all uplifted from the ground, and settled back down. Carter began to change, as golden armor covered his body. In the meantime, Hogan had discovered Carter's tunnel, so he went to investigate, as did Newkirk and LeBeau, and the three would climb down the ladder. Newkirk and LeBeau, and even Hogan watched in awe at what was happening. "Mon Colonel, what in the world is happening to Andrew?!" Hogan shrugged his shoulders.
As the dust settled, Sergeant Carter walked out in armor of Gold and Red. Carter was wearing a Green Cape. Carter looked like someone out of the Arthurian legends. His face and hair remained the same, but a small beard had appeared on his face. Carter had changed from his transformation. He wielded Excalibur in his hand. "I look different to you guys," he began, "But I assure you all. It's still me." Carter said calmly.
"Carter..how did you find this place? And why do you have a sword in your hand? Were you trying to dig a tunnel?" Newkirk questioned. Newkirk of course bit his tongue before saying anything else. "I'm sorry mate..that's what I meant to say..LeBeau is sorry as well. We didn't mean to hurt you." The englishman said to Andrew Carter, reaching his hand out to him.
Carter took a few minutes to respond, but shook Newkirk's hand. They finally apologized, he thought to himself. "I forgive you all, but..you all literally went too far with the mockery. And sure, you managed to use the bow I crafted and blew up that convoy going by. But what reward do I get for it? Nothing. When I went back to England that time, those ungrateful superiors of mine demoted me to Technical Sergeant."
Carter sighed, and then motioned for everyone to head up the ladder. "So..you defied me and intended to make your own operation, huh, Carter?" Hogan was serious. Carter rolled his eyes, knowing Hogan would question him about it. Carter let out an oof da. "Yes, I did, Hogan. I am on my own now. You know very well I wasn't going to stay out of sabotage. Especially knowing how I was your "Demolition expert", until that incident happened." Carter feared the coming demotion, but Hogan never did. He never demoted him as Carter feared he would.
Hogan sighed. "Okay, let us forget about that punching incident. It should never have happened..nor the mockery should have happened. Alright, you've got your own operation now. Looking at the power unleashed within that sword, which I presume is Excalibur..you don't need our help. But..will you help us, if we need it?" Carter considered Hogan's words for a couple of minutes. Carter knew that forgiving Hogan and the others
Carter finally gave in. "Okay, Colonel, if you need it, I'll help you. Just never mock my heritage again. I am a descendant of King Arthur per this writing on the wall. I was foretold in a prophecy in which a man named "Carter" shall step forth as the Green Baron, to take the throne of the "Holy Imperial Kingdoms", which I assume is a reference to the Holy Roman Empire." This earned looks from Newkirk and LeBeau, as well as Broughton.
"Cor blimey, what makes you think you're the descendant of the Once and Future King? The prophecy could be talking about a different Carter. Also, the problem is that the Kingdom specifically is designed for Anglican monarchs. They stopped Catholic monarchs long ago, in 1701, mate." Carter knew how right Newkirk was about that. Cater knew the kingdom would have to collapse or be overthrown if he were to be able to assume the throne. Newkirk then climbed up the ladder, followed by Hogan. Only LeBeau remained, because he still needed to talk with Carter. "Andrew, you should hide that sword. The guards might arrest you for it. Or worse, kill you for having that weapon in the camp."
Carter nodded, and soon, LeBeau headed up the ladder. Carter meanwhile would begin traveling down the various passageways of the underground place. He had a desire to continue exploring the place. Of course though he wasn't sure if he was gonna be needed back at the surface. After all, Hogan, Newkirk and LeBeau were sorry for what happened earlier and asked him if he could help them out once in a while when they so needed it.
As Carter continued going through the passageways of the place, he continued discovering more and more of the place. They were statues of all of the world's greats. And then he came across the final part of the place.A green orb. Touching it, he heard voices speak within his head.
"You are the Green Baron, you are destined to rule. 31 years you have been waiting..to sit upon your throne of honor, The world needs you." The mysterious voice told Carter, and then disappeared, as Carter felt a surge of energy within his body. He had gotten more power. Carter knew what he had to do. Testing it out, he was shocked as he had created an airplane. He snapped his fingers and made it disappear, for now, at least.
As Carter had reached the end of the place, he would then leave, heading back up the ladder due to heightened sense of direction, and would make the place vanish, returning the hole as it was before, nothing there. He was destined to rule. And he would have help coming, that would give him the advantage. The next day, Carter, now back in his normal uniform, would pretend to be a "traitor" so that the location of a chemical plant could be learned. Ultimately, this plan would, like many others' that were drawn up by Hogan and also by others in the Underground, would succeed.
When Hogan and the others dressed up as Gestapo to stop General Wittkamper from taking Carter, as soon as they stepped outside, including Schultz, Hogan, wearing the mask, ordered everyone by the trees. Leni Richter revealed herself as the real "traitor", doing stuff to delay the works at the chemical factory as she is proud of being a traitor to the "Third Reich". Soon after, Carter moved his hand, everyone would see his vision. Using his mind, Carter would do something that shocked everyone. He showed them his point of view..and with a snap of his fingers...the plant would be nothing. Normal people could snap their fingers but the factory would still be standing..but with Carter's case..not so.
The chemical plant was no more, going up in a green explosion, something not seen at all with normal explosions. After that, everyone's control over their vision returned. General Hans Wittkamper looked over at Carter in total shock, Carter having completely now changed into his armor of legend. "You….destroyed the chemical plant..that armor…the explosion's color...you're…the…the..Green Baron." Carter nodded, affirming that it was him who blew it up.
"Yes, General Hans Wittkamper. It was me. It was my destiny. I am the Green Baron, Descendant of the Pendragons…distant relative of Wilhelm II…Descendant of the Sioux..I am the heir of Camelot..and the heir of the Holy Imperial Kingdoms. I will achieve my goals..in this life, at all costs." Carter was now a serious figure. Sure, he was naive at times, but now
Hogan looked over at General Wittkamper. "Your factory was blown up, and you will possibly get the blame. You'd rather stay here?" Hogan said, very sternly. Wittkamper then responded and told Hogan that he was coming with him. By then, he would be on the way to England. Carter had just shown off an ability he had gotten. The cracks were showing, across the world. Fire burst from the Earth as chaos was beginning. Ash rained down on parts of the world as thousands were running for their lives.
In the meantime, Anneliese Klink woke from her slumber, breathing a bit heavy. She knew what book to open. It was a book about the Green Baron. Words were glowing. Klink rushed in, having heard his daughter yell. "Suße! Are you okay? What's going on?" Anneliese pointed to the glowing words in the book. Klink stopped, motionless, and then turned a few pages. The prophecy was unfolding, he thought. He was shocked when he turned another page and saw who it exactly was. Technical Sergeant Andrew Carter, clad in golden armor, with a green scarf around his neck. Klink took a few moments to process this. One of his own prisoners..was prophesized to be the Green Baron of legend?
"The prophecy is unfolding," Kommandant Klink began saying. "And..an American is the one prophesied to be the Green Baron..oh my god." Flashes of green were occurring across the sky. Carter made his way to the surface just as Klink and his daughter Anneliese were looking in the book about the Green Baron. The book described visions seen by a distant member of the Bonaparte dynasty.
Carter was now outside, like everyone else from the other barracks. He was clad in his golden uniform, with his green scarf around his neck. The prisoners looked at him with awe. He looked..different..both physically and personality-wise. Andrew Carter knew, he had to show them the extent of his power. No one knew what he was about to do. With a wave of his hand, the green plane appeared before them. It was a mixture of the Fokker 425/17 plane and a modern model. Something was truly going on.
It was vastly improved..and a shocked Schultz and Langenscheidt approached. Carter, smirking, made it vanish. "Carter..how did you…get that plane in here? How?" Langenscheidt questioned him. Carter held up a finger to give him a few minutes, and then began to speak after that happened. He'd explain that he had felt powers come to him that he had never had before, when he explored that place under Barracks 4, which no one knew about.
"Watch this." Carter opened up a picture in the air, showing Schultz working at his toy factory. "Impressive factory I must say, Schultzie." Carter then switched the picture, showing a plane model that looked just like Carter's which he had manifested. "You predicted me, sergeant. You predicted the Green Baron." Schultz nodded to this, he had heard of many legends in Germany and those from other countries in the world. The Green Baron was one of them, and he didn't know that it was an actual prophecy that was set to happen.
"Suddenly, the green airplane manifested itself on its own. The Kommandant knew what was going to happen, having been on that page. Attempts by guards to destroy the plane were unsuccessful; They were blocked from the plane with an invisible barrier in some sort of magic that should not be possible. Carter was fighting himself in an attempt to not get on. Kommandant Wilhelm Klink and Anneliese Klink noticed Carter fighting to not try and get in, figuring it was an escape if he did. "I will not get in..I will not get in!" Anneliese noted in the book about the Green Baron that he didn't want to get in. Carter continued fighting himself."
"Don't fight it, Carter. It's..prophecy." He turned and saw Anneliese. "But Anneliese, Klink will get in trouble for an escape-" Carter was cut off when the Kommandant spoke. "I'll make something up. Go, Carter. Hurry! Get on the plane!" Carter was baffled that any of this was happening- Klink would have tried to stop him at all costs if he wasn't the foretold Green Baron. But now Andrew Carter was about to take off.
And then..as every prisoner and guard watched. The plane soared down the camp, taking off and avoiding the gate. He flew higher and higher into the air, until Carter was out of sight. Prophecy was taking hold now/ Carter was on his way through Germany. But what is he supposed to do? That much he doesn't know of yet. Within minutes though, Carter's green plane had been noticed were in the air, trying to shoot him down. Carter maneuvered as best as he could possibly do.
And then he finally managed to get behind the planes pursuing him. Firing, he would knock a couple of them down. He did something that would make his ancestors smile. He succeeded at something huge. He continued firing. Within a few hours, the 37-plus Luftwaffe planes that were in pursuit of him were all knocked to the ground. Many survived, but a few died in the crashes. A few that caught a glimpse of him, who did not know his name was Carter, called him by an alternative nickname for him, mainly due to his green place; Der Grün kampfflieger, or, the Green fighter pilot.
Carter would land somewhere in Germany, seeking refuge in the underground for the time being, until he could get back up in the air. With his plane vanishing once more until it was needed again. Something was going on nearby. Carter would go to sleep that night. But some activity was stirring. Miles from Carter, lay a grave. A grave of a legend that once walked that ground decades prior. This was long before World War II. Within the grave..the man smiled, the first time in decades he had done so.
And so der Rote Kampfflieger rose.
Author's Note: I'll try to have longer chapters, but this chapter did take me a little while to make because I am busy. Hope you all enjoy. - TheSteveIrwinFan6836
1. The Latin on the concrete wall that Carter reads translates to this: "The man known as the Green Baron will come to rule the Holy Imperial Kingdoms…A once and future king, a man named Carter...Mary Jane will return to Carter to be crowned empress..Carter, Heir of Arthur Pendragon and Descended from Camelot and the Sioux."
2. Der Grün kampfflieger and der Rote Kampfflieger both translate to "The Green fighter pilot" and "The Red fighter pilot."
