Katie Holt screamed.
Her brother was banging on her bathroom door in seconds, threatening to break it down in his own panicked state to make sure she was okay.
For a split second Katie couldn't help but think her brother needed a chill pill before remembering why he was so protective of her. Fighting in an intergalactic war will do that.
Blinking she turned her attention back to what, or rather who, had surprised her enough to make her scream. Ketih Kogane was in her bathroom. When he wasn't supposed to be. He blinked and went beet red.
Watching his face turn pink, then completely pale when he heard her brother, broke her out of her moment of shock enough to respond.
"I'm fine Matt."
"What the hell Pigeon?! You scared me half to death are you alright?"
"Yeah."
"You sure?" he asked suspiciously.
She cleared her throat and hoped she sounded convincing enough. "Yeah, I just slipped. I'm fine. No danger big brother."
"Okay, whatever weirdo."
She rolled her eyes before turning her attention to her former fellow paladin and raised a brow when he kept his gaze resolutely on the floor. "Soooo,"
"I'm so sorry Pidge."
"What are you doing here?"
"Are you gonna cover up?"
She blushed before grabbing a towel and wrapping herself up so she wasn't completely naked in front of him. "There, now, how did you get in my bathroom and why are you here?"
He finally looked up and looked out the window scowling, garnering him a curious brow again. "Stupid wolf, I'm going to kill him."
"Kosmo?"
He sighed. "Yeah. It was an accident."
"You porting into my bathroom while I was getting out of the shower was an accident?"
"Yes!" He hissed when she didn't sound like she believed him. "I was trying to get Kosmo to stop stealing my food so I told him that I would let him stay as long as he wanted to see you and Bae Bae if he didn't steal my breakfast today at our big picnic."
"Aaand?"
"And then he jumped on me, knocked over my coffee and ported me here." He mumbled with defeat. Katie laughed. Keith glared. "It's not funny Pidge."
"You're right, it's hilarious how much like you your dog is."
"Don't forget exactly where and when that dog ported me to."
Pidge stopped laughing and glared at her friend. "You tell anyone what you may have seen and I will end you."
Keith's hands came up in surrender. "I won't say a thing."
Realising something Pidge frowned. "Keith, where's Kosmo?"
His eyes widened. "Oh no!" He groaned.
Pidge quickly unlocked and opened the bathroom door looking down her hallway. Looking back at Keith she motioned for him to follow her to her room. He seemed to inwardly panic and shook his head.
"Keith, you can't get caught coming out of my bathroom without entering through the front door first, Kosmo is god knows where and you've already seen everything so I suggest you come with me and figure out how to sneak out of here then double back with a normal entry before Matt finds you." She whispered.
Keith blinked twice, seemed to weigh up his options then sighed and nodded. She quickly checked the hall again and dragged him down the hallway with her. When they were safely in her room she turned to him with a stern expression.
"Turn around." He did as told and took a breath of relief when she was fully dressed. "Okay, Matt's in the kitchen, you're gonna have to go through the window."
Keith glared at her. "Pidge I am not climbing through your bedroom window."
"Fine, you wanna do it your way? Feel free to say good morning and explain this to Matt on your way out."
He sighed and she knew she had won. "Fine, I'll go through your damn window like a teenager. You are aware that we're both adults right?"
He was half way out the window when he got the unmistakable feeling of being watched and froze.
What followed next he would blame on Pidge, forever.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Keith winced at Matt's deadly tone.
He turned and found not only Pidges brother but their friends in her backyard with her parents staring at him. Keith's blood ran cold when he saw Sam and Colleen Holt staring at him in shock. Fuck. They had all agreed to meet for brunch, in her backyard.
"I can explain everything but you need to stay calm Matt."
"You're damn well gonna explain why the hell I shouldn't drop you right now!"
"Matthew Holt!" Colleens voice cut through her sons rant. "You're never going to get an answer from him if you keep yelling at him." Keith had a moment to breathe a sigh of relief until she directed her gaze at him, making him feel more uncomfortable than when Matt had been yelling. "Keith?"
"Yes Ma'am?"
"Get out of my daughters window."
"Yes Ma'am." He swiftly pulled himself fully out of Pidge's bedroom and onto the grass of her back lawn.
"Good, now, Katie get out here, now!" her tone brokered no argument and within a minute her daughter was standing beside Keith looking as sheepish as he felt. "Somebody want to tell me what's going on here?"
Pidge shrugged. "Kosmo."
Colleen's brow lifted. "Kosmo. As in Keith's space wolf?"
Pidge nodded. "Yep."
"You mean that one right over there under the tree napping." Lance pointed with a smirk.
Keith glared at the wolf. "You are in so much trouble later."
Colleen crossed her arms. "And how exactly is it Kosmo's fault that you're climbing out of my daughters bedroom window?"
Keith cleared his throat. "He ported me here because I told him if he didn't steal my breakfast I'd let him stay and play with Pidge and Bae Bae as long as he wanted."
Matt's eyes widened with recognition and Keith panicked. "Oh, my, god. That's why you screamed! You didn't slip!"
"Matt! Shut up!"
Matt ignored his sister and focused on Keith. "I'm going to kill you Kogane."
Keith put his hands up and took a step back. "Matt, I don't want to hurt you."
Pidge had had enough. Stepping in front of Keith as Matt got closer she scowled at Matt and put a hand up. "Don't you dare or I will drop you myself."
"He saw you naked!"
"It was an accident and if you haven't noticed Keith and I are both adults. What I do or don't do in private with other people is none of your business. Now, if Keith and I are mature enough to be adults about this then you can too you over grown baby."
Everyone seemed to have relaxed as the siblings hashed it out. The other paladins seemed amused as the Pidge and Matt went back and forth. Sam sighed and shook his head seeming to leave it to his children to sort out. Colleen however had definitely had enough.
"Enough! Both of you! Katie you will not drop your brother, no matter how irritating he is being." Pidge pouted and Matt smirked until Colleen rounded on him next. "Matt, your sister is a fully grown woman and can do what she wants with who she wants end of story." Next she turned to Keith. "And you." He physically stiffened under her gaze. "I would hope you would never lie to me Keith, honesty is important."
"I would never lie to you Mrs Holt, you scare me too much."
Everyone laughed and the situation dissolved as they all settled at the picnic table.
It had been a while since the incident that they didn't speak of. For Pidge it was like Voldemort. You did not speak about the incident unless you wanted to die a slow and painful death. It was summer and the heat had gotten bad over the last couple of days. She was in the middle of lifting her dress over her head when she felt the air shift behind her and a low voice swore.
Pidge froze, the dress now stuck around her head. "Keith?" she asked uncertainly.
"I'm going to kill that bloody wolf. I'm not looking I swear!"
"Um as nice as that is, considering you've seen it all anyway. I'm stuck."
"What?"
She scowled at the obvious amusement in his voice. "Would you please shut up and help me get this dress off."
He chuckled and it was only a second or two before she felt his body heat in front of her. "Um, how would you like to do this?"
She rolled her eyes. "Just grab the dress and yank it off."
"Okay, okay."
She felt him take hold of the fabric bunched around her elbows and pull. One swift pull and her head and arms were free. She grinned at Keith.
"Thanks."
Keith smirked. "You're welcome?"
She rolled her eyes. "Oh shut up, I wouldn't have gotten stuck if you hadn't appeared out of nowhere again."
He rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, sorry about that."
She shrugged. "At least I wasn't naked this time."
He looked down, blushed and looked at the ceiling clearing his throat. "Well, not completely."
She punched him in the chest. "Pervert." She grumbled.
He rubbed the sore spot. "Ow."
"Oh please, you're fine."
He shrugged and chanced a look at her face. "So, my apparent faithful companion seems to have disappeared on me."
She sighed. "Come on I'll drive you back."
"Uh Pidge? Maybe you should put some clothes on first?"
"Yep."
Two weeks later Pidge was soaking in the bath with a book when the air changed.
"Hey, can you pass me my wine."
Keith sighed. "Sure, here."
"Thanks."
"How are you okay with this right now?"
Pidge shrugged, put her book down on the vanity next to her and turned to him as she took a sip of the wine he had given her. "I'm covered in bubbles."
Keith's brow lifted. "Pidge, you're taking a bath."
"Yep, and now I don't have to get up to reach my wine."
He shook his head. "This is so weird."
"Have you figured out why he's doing it yet?"
"What?"
"Have you tried to figure out why Kosmo keeps dropping you in on me while I'm half or fully naked yet? Or have you just been hoping it won't happen again?"
Keith sighed. "He never randomly drops me anywhere! It's like this new thing he's doing and we won't stay when he does! It's infuriating!"
Pidge handed him the glass so he could take a sip. "Maybe he's doing it for a reason."
"What reason could he possibly have for porting me into your bedroom or bathroom when you're naked?"
Pidge shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe he knows something we don't."
"Maybe, or maybe he's intent on me dying early."
Pidge snorted. "Don't hog the wine."
"Do you want me to leave? Or at least wait outside?"
Pidge smirked. "Are you uncomfortable Keith?"
"You're not?"
She shrugged. "You've seen everything already, what have I got to hide or be embarrassed about?"
Keith sighed. "Got any more wine?"
"In the fridge."
"I'm not going to run into your brother this time am I?"
She chuckled. "No, no one else is here."
Keith went to the kitchen for another bottle coming back with a book from her shelf as well. When she raised a brow he shrugged. "You've got a book, figured I may as well find something to read as well."
It was a month before the next incident. Summer had hit full force and she had resorted to sleeping in her underwear. She was sound asleep, tossing and turning when Keith did another sit up and found himself in Pidges room. Frowning he opened his mouth to curse the wolf when he heard a groan. Standing up he was at her side in a second when his superior night vision caught a flash of pain cross her face.
"Pidge. Wake up." He dropped a hand to her shoulder and shook lightly. "Katie, it's just a nightmare."
Gasping her eyes flashed open and she bolted into an upright position. After a moment her eyes cleared and looked at him confused. "Keith?"
"You were having a nightmare."
"How'd you?"
"I was doing some sit ups. Laid down on my bedroom floor, sat up on yours."
"Oh."
"You okay?"
"Yeah, it was just a dream. I get them sometimes."
"Voltron?"
"Yeah."
"I get them too."
She nodded then laid back down.
"Pidge?"
"Keith it's the middle of the night, I'm tired and I'm going back to sleep. You can either start walking now or get into bed. I don't care which."
"Okay."
She hummed as he sat on the edge of the bed and wrinkled her nose. "Keith?"
"Yeah?"
"You need to shower before you get in my bed. You stink."
He chuckled before leaving the room to shower.
When summer gave way to fall and then subsequently winter with more middle of the night drop ins or bath time visits Pidge and Keith resigned themselves to the situation they seemed to be stuck in as they tried to figure out how to dissuade Kosmo from dropping him into her life unexpectedly. Out of the chaos came a new routine and Pidge found she quite enjoyed Keith's company and vice versa.
Pidge continued brainstorming reasons as she sat reading in bed and wished for an extra source of warmth when she felt the air shift. She smirked and failed to keep in an amused chuckle when she heard a loud thump on the carpet.
"You'd think with how often he does this to me that he'd figure out how to fix the landing."
She lowered her book to watch him get up off the floor. "Or he just likes dropping you on your but."
Keith sighed. "A far more believable reason. What are you reading tonight?" he asked as he slipped onto the bed next to her.
She showed him the cover and used the distraction to shuffle closer to absorb the never ending source of heat he seemed to emit. When his brows went up in surprise she shrugged. "What? It's cold."
He chuckled and pulled her closer until she was settled against him. "Better?"
"Much thank you. You know you're like your own space heater?"
"No?"
"Well you are. You're always warm and you give off so much heat, maybe it's your alien blood..." he couldn't help the stiffening of his muscles and she patted his arm. "It's nice, that you're so warm. I don't retain heat so having someone around that it literally rolls off of in waves comes in handy."
"So you're just using me for my higher core temperature?"
Pidge sighed dramatically. "I'm afraid so."
He chuckled and rolled his eyes. "Don't you have a book to read?"
She yawned. "Yeah, maybe I'll rest my eyes for a bit."
"Good idea." Keith shuffled lower to lay back so he would be comfortable and felt his own eyes getting heavy.
It took much longer than Pidge would have liked for her to start figuring out why Kosmo tended to do what he did. Whenever she thought about having Keith around for a particular reason or she felt uneasy he appeared. This led her to a few different theories but how would she get them figured out without letting Keith in on her thinking?
"Hey Keith?"
"Yeah?"
"Has Kosmo ever displayed any telepathic tendencies?"
Ketih thought for a minute then shook his head. "No, not to me any way. Why?"
"Pidge shrugged. "No reason."
Over the next couple of weeks Pidge started putting her theory to the test. When she was in the bath soaking she wished he'd bring her a glass of wine and keep her company. Nothing. When she was frustrated trying to fix the sink and wished she had someone around to do this for her he appeared. She was shopping and had briefly wondered if it would be nice to shop with someone like the couple in the produce section were doing. She finished her shopping alone. At the end of a rough week she had stormed out of the labs and was half way home he had appeared in her passenger seat, almost running her off the road.
Pidge could now explain over half of the incidences with her own thinking. The other half however she couldn't and that intrigued her more. Was it something she hadn't noticed about her thinking or was this a two way thing? Realisation struck that she would have to bring Keith into her theory. She swore under her breath as she thought about it, reaching for her bra. The air shifted and she didn't have a chance to cover herself before he appeared, right in front of her.
There was a slight buzzing in her ear and she noted absentmindedly that he had finally gotten his wish and landed on the bed. Unfortunately for her he had landed eye level with her bare chest. Somehow he had managed to blush and have all of the blood drain from the rest of his face. She couldn't tell if that meant he was surprised or horrified.
"That dog is trying to kill me." He murmured.
"Ketih?" He blinked and looked up with clouded eyes. "You're sitting on my bra."
Keith groaned. "You are infuriating do you know that?!"
That took her by surprise. "What?"
"You're driving me crazy Pidge!"
She realised what he meant and blushed trying to stop the smile from appearing. He noticed anyway and frowned with confusion. "Wait, are you smiling?"
She turned around and quickly grabbed a shirt pulling it over her head before turning back to him biting her lower lip. "What if I am?"
Keith stood up and crowded her space. Backing her into the wall. For the first time since the first incident Katie Holt didn't know what to do. Looking up into his eyes she looked, really looked and realised why Kosmo kept dropping him in on her.
Groaning her head dropped backwards hitting the wall. "We're idiots."
Keith looked at her quizzically. "Uhh Pidge?"
Rolling her eyes she realised just how oblivious he was. Fine she could fix that. Lifting her head she leant forward on her tip toes and kissed him. He froze, his whole body going stiff before he seemed to click and responded to her. His arms wound around her, pulling her against him. When they parted he watched her carefully.
"Kosmo has telepathic tendencies."
Keith tilted his head to the side in confusion. "I'm not sure I follow you Pidge. I'm also not sure if I should be concerned or upset that you were theorising while you were kissing me."
Pidge chuckled. "Oh I wasn't. I've been testing the theory for a few weeks but now I can actually tell you."
"Oh really?"
She looked at him sheepishly. "Well, you see, I had a theory but I wasn't totally sure until, well, do you remember last week when Kosmo dropped you in when I was trying to fix the sink?"
"Yeah?"
"I was thinking about how crappy the job was and how annoyed I was and that I wished someone were around to fix it for me. Then poof there you were."
"Okay, now I'm starting to follow."
She nodded. "I started linking it all and realised I could account for about 60% of the incidents."
"Only 60%?"
"Yep, which was why I was trying to figure out how to explain the theory to you when you popped in."
Realisation hit him. "Kosmo can pick up on our bonds and deeper basic wants and needs."
"Exactly. I think he was just trying to help."
Keith chuckled dropping his forehead to her shoulder. "You know we're gonna have to actually give him a treat now don't you."
"Well, I kind of got him a bed for my room do you think that will be good enough?"
Keith pulled back and looked in the back corner of her room. There sat a comfy new dog bed, where Kosmo seemed to be dozing happily. Keith smiled and looked back at her. "You are a one of a kind."
She grinned proudly. "I know."
