After cracking Morin Khan further, they were able to get some addresses of possible places Eddie and Grace could be at in New Jersey. They were able to secure search warrants with Erin's help and then were able to build up a team to head over there.
"How are you holding up?" Danny asked his little brother as they followed in the convoy, driving over the bridge to Jersey.
"How am I holding up?" Jamie responded with an exasperated laugh at his brother's question. "How do you think I'm holding up? My wife and my little girl are missing. I think that should tell you everything of how I'm feeling."
"I know…" he sighed, his heart breaking for his little brother's young family.
"I should've went with them, Danny. They wanted me to go but I said that they should have time for the two of them. I was an idiot…"
"Hey!" he admonished firmly. "Don't do that. Just don't. This isn't your fault. This is the fault of the bastard who took them. Do not blame yourself."
"It's hard not to, Dan. And my boy is at home without me…" he trailed off with a wavering sigh. "I'm failing on all fronts right now."
"No you're not. We're going to find Grace and Eddie. Conor is being well taken care of by Pop and Erin, you know that. You're not failing at all, kid. You're taking care of your family. As you should."
Jamie nodded and leaned his against the window as they continued the drive.
Eddie cuddled Grace close to her as they attempted to sleep on the cold, hard floor. The four year old was using her mother's arm as a makeshift pillow and her jacket as a blanket. Sleep wasn't finding Eddie at the moment and instead found herself keeping guard over her daughter.
A few hours had gone by and the woman she had encountered still hadn't made an appearance. Eddie was curious but skeptical about her revelation earlier. Did she actually want to help them or was she trying to build trust first before doing something to hurt them? She pulled Grace closer. Whatever it was, she hoped that her little girl was left out of it.
Suddenly, the door to the room was pulled open and there was a shadowy figure standing there. Eddie immediately sat up and pulled her sleeping daughter closer to the wall, then stood in front of her. Her heart started to race as the figure began to approach them.
"It's okay," they said. Eddie recognized that it was the woman. "I'm not going to hurt you."
"Don't come any closer," Eddie warned her.
The woman stopped and held her hands up. "Alright. I won't. I just came to bring you this."
A few items were thrown at Eddie's feet, one which she recognized was a large blanket.
"I don't know how much longer it will be until Edwin gets back. But he might want to move you two soon."
"To where?" Eddie asked.
"We might end up crossing the border," the woman admitted.
"Oh god," Eddie whispered. "Where are we?"
"In Jersey," she replied. "But he usually moves us quick. We can't stay in one place for too long. Just be ready, okay?"
Eddie let out a breath, "Please… just let us go. I'll give you whatever you want."
"I said that once… but I'm still here," the woman revealed.
Eddie's eyes widened, "Why do you say that?"
"Because… I used to be in your shoes. But Edwin… he never let me go. I tried and tried. Eventually, I got tired of trying. So I stayed."
Eddie realized that she could use this revelation to her advantage in attempt to connect with the woman.
"You know… I'm a cop. I can help you. We can get out of this together."
"Cops don't help," the woman countered angrily. "I tried that too. Edwin told them I was lying and that was it. They didn't try to help anymore."
"I'm really sorry about that," Eddie said. "I am. But I believe you. And I can help. What's your name?"
"Alicia," the woman said.
"Alicia what?"
"Alicia Mathis."
"Okay Alicia. I'm Eddie and the little girl is my daughter. If we work together, I'm sure we can get out of this. My husband is a cop too…"
"And you're father-in-law is the police commissioner," Alicia interjected.
Eddie furrowed her eyebrows, "And how did you know that?"
"Because that's the reason Edwin went after you…"
"Oh…" Eddie trailed off.
"He's strapped for cash bad. He was hoping if we went after you, then maybe we could get some ransom money out of it. But since you had your daughter with you… that changed things."
"Alicia… please," Eddie pleaded. "Let's help each other. We can break out of here. And when we do, I can help you. I'll help you reunite with your loved ones. I'll help you start living a life again… please."
Her look toward Eddie started to soften. She could tell that she really wanted to take her up on her offer but something was holding her back.
"I have to go," Alicia said suddenly. "I'll check on you guys in a few hours."
Eddie let out a frustrated sigh as Alicia turned and left the room.
"Damn it," she let out, taking a few breaths to calm herself.
"Mommy," she suddenly heard. She turned to see Grace drowsily sit up and look at her. The little girl was visibly shaking now due to the cold, which worried her mother as she was starting to show signs of hypothermia.
Eddie quickly grabbed the large blanket and wrapped it around her, then pulled her into her lap. Their daughter was small, only weighting 27 pounds soaking wet. The cold hit her pretty easy on any day but she was usually well protected from the elements compared to their current situation.
"It's okay, sweetheart. It's okay," she comforted, pressing a kiss to her cold cheek and tightening her arms around her in effort to warm her up. "I know it's cold but you have to keep fighting through it for Mommy, okay? Can you do that?"
"I'll try," she let out tiredly, laying her head back against her mother's chest.
Tears started to flow down Eddie's cheeks as she hugged her daughter to her chest.
"Please hurry, Jamie," she whispered shakily. "She needs you. We both need you. Please."
Not the longest update but I wanted to give you guys something! Hope you enjoyed!
