Chapter One "Returning Legend"

Thump.

One step.

Thump.

I just needed to take one step at time.

Thump.

One step closer to my objective.

Thump.

I reached for the keypad. My fingers struggled, but I proceeded to press the keys. What would have normally taken a matter took an agonising minute as I nearly fumbled and touched the wrong number.

After I pressed the last key the thick blast door designed to resist explosive and forced entry refused to move.

I resisted unleashing a struggle of curses. It was a waste of energy that I had precious little of.

Thump.

My left foot went first.

Thump.

Then my right foot.

Thump.

My weary body eventually reached the blast door. I quickly surveyed it with my eyes, pondering my next cause of action. The fastest method normally was brute force. A powerful Mystic Code or nameless Noble Phantasm could have easily dealt with the door.

I sighed as banished those thoughts. Precious mana was needed to deal with the disaster awaiting if I didn't reach the objective. Mana was a scarce resource right now, but I decided the best course of action with what I had.

"Structural Analysis." I chanted as I pressed my hand against the door and mana pulsed through it. After I got the information I needed, I chanted once more. "Alteration."

Unseen to the naked eye, my mana exited my body and moved towards the edges of the blast doors where armored hinges were. A loud groan entered my ears as metal warped. It was when I heard a specific sound that alerted me to proceed with the next part of the plan.

I took deep breath and channelled mana into my muscules and bones. With a large shout, I pulled. Metal groaned in defiance, but my will was stronger than any metal. Sweat dripped down my body and muscles screamed in pain. Yet, I continued until I heard pops and a loud crash as the blast door fall onto the ground.

The ten tonne blast door hadn't moved enough as I would have wanted, but it was enough for the job. I squeezed through the narrow opening. My body had to contour as concrete and metal scrapped against my skin.

Sizzling heat rushed to meet my skin as I made it through the narrow opening.

I hissed as heat that would start melting the lower boiling point metals like mercury's 387 Celsius degrees. Only pain of the heat met my skin. Once skin of flesh had transformed into swords layered like scales thanks to my Reality Marble. These scale-like skin protecting me from the intense heat much greater than my normal skin could ever hoped for.

As I pushed deeper into the room, a beeping from my belt got louder. If I had been an ordinary man I might have looked at the Geiger counter. Well, I was no ordinary human, and something much more important than my own life mattered right now.

Thump.

I took a step towards the center of the room.

Thump.

Torn muscules and broken bones continued to sustain more damage as I walked.

Thump.

Avalon screamed for it to be allowed to work.

Thump.

I restricted the flow of mana into Avalon and prevented the healing energy from leaving my brain and vital organs to conserve what little mana I had left.

Thump.

A pained hiss escaped my lips as certain damaged muscles and bones that allowed the bare minimum of movement were pushed to their limits. I grunted by sent just enough to repair the lost muscles and bone for walking and continued forward.

Thump.

A wave of nausea hit me. My legs was nearly collapsed and I stumbled to regain my balance.

I suppressed the urge to take one of the anti-radiation pills on my belt. It would take precious seconds from prevent a global catastrophe. And the pills wouldn't have the time to work as they took minutes for my body to absorb.

Thump.

The heat started to reach unbearable levels even for my superhuman tolerance, but I pushed on.

Thump.

My sword-layered skin started to boil as the air temperature reached temperature high enough to melt common metal. The mask around my mouth and nose preventing the intense heat from entering my lungs and burning it from the inside.

Thump.

Just several more steps.

Thump.

Three.

Thump.

Two.

Thump.

One.

My feet finally reached where I was close enough to test my objective.

"Structural Analysis." I chanted as mana entered the objective. "It's bad," I growled. "Thankfully I came before the point of no return."

I glanced around at the objective. It was a nuclear reactor that was very close from suffering a core meltdown. This particular nuclear reactor had been the most advanced and largest nuclear fusion reactor that had been the hopes the future for unlimited clean energy.

Now, it was the verge of causing a nuclear chain reaction that could kill millions in the nearby population centers and affect billions with the nuclear fallout.

I reached for my belt and touched the boiling surface of several mana crystals that Rin had bankrupted herself to buy. There was precious little mana left inside the crystals. Most of having ready been used to defeat the conventionally armed or magically equipped death cultist that had wanted to bring about the end of the world. I greedily absorbed the last remining mana.

Looking up, I checked once more if my plan was the best course of action. It was when I noticed no better option that I prepared to execute the plan.

But that was after one last call.

I grabbed the radio from my belt.

"Sorry, Rin, Arturia… I don't think I am going to make it." I apologized with deep regrets.

"Shirou, just hold on!" shouted Arturia as the gunshots, explosives and sounds connected to magic spells echoed in the background. "Give me minute and I will reach you."

"No, Arturia. You're the first layer preventing the death cultist from reaching me. Rin will likely become overwhelmed if you don't hold your position."

"Baka, there isn't time to be worrying about me!" screamed Rin as she joined on the radio wave. "I can handle the death cultist without any help!"

"If you leave, Rin then Arturia will be overwhelmed."

"She can handle a few death cultist alon–"

"Not against the several low-class Servants that the death cultist had somehow summoned." I interrupted Rin. "Besides, it's pointless to come save me. I'm going to stop the core meltdown with my life."

My two wives' voice cut off as I threw the radio into a nearby cooling pool.

I called upon the blueprints for Mystic Codes that had been specifically prepared to prevent a nuclear reactor meltdown and prevent the death cultists from ever hoping to create a global disaster.

"Trace On." I muttered as several swords appeared around me.

It became difficult for me to breath and my heart beat started to reach a dangerously low pace. Still, I pushed on to draw on what mana I had left. My vision started to blur and I began to feel lightheaded.

A sense of panic hit me. It wasn't because I was in a dangerous situation. I felt this way because if I failed there would be millions of immediate causalities from the nuclear explosion and potentially billions affected by the nuclear fallout.

Then before my eyes a gigantic swirl of light formed before me, and time stopped.

There in a language that no humans had ever created be it through spoken, written or body language I heard what it wanted. It wasn't telepathy as that inclined a language. Instead, I simply understood the very essence of what it meant.

I chuckled. This swirling light was something that I recognised. It was a being etched into EMIYA's very core. An entity that had granted him a one time wish of omnipotent-level, but condemned him to an eternal service of that of a mass murderer countless, beyond the billions.

"I will not make a deal with you, Alaya. I will not become EMIYA or another version of him." I laughed manically. "If I am to fail then there are others to take my place. My wives will be the first and my followers that shared my beliefs as a Hero of Justice will also be there if they fail."

Alaya lit up and dimmed repeatedly.

"My dream is to save everyone, but I accept I cannot save everyone! I will save all those I can. Becoming a Counter Guardian is not saving people. Saving people does not mean forsaking the lives of others that are also screaming for salvation."

The blue light shimmered.

"Are you calling me a hypocrite? I don't choose who lives and dies. I save those within my reach. If someone dies then I will cry in regret and beg for forgiveness, but I will never stop in saving people."

Alaya glowed brightly, almost as if it was angry. I laughed back in response and watched as Alaya say its last words before it vanished.

Time returned back to normal and I returned my attention to the damaged nuclear reactor.

I closed my eyes as I recalled my life. It was regretful that I might not see Rin or Arturia again, but I could proudly proclaim that I had died trying to be a hero of justice until the very end.

My heart beat one last time as I channeled the very last mana sustaining my life into launching the Mystic Codes that would prevent reactor meltdown.

The very last thing I saw was the temperature dropping and damage to the reactor began repairing before the likely last thing I would see faded and dark embrace of death welcome me into its fold…

- O -

I gasped from air. It took me a while to realize that luxury shouldn't be possible. The dead don't breathe! The beating of warm blood coursing through my body also confirmed I was very much alive despite the possibility of such a thing happening.

The darkness hid where I was. My first thought was that I was in the Throne of Heroes. I hadn't the most famous individual on Earth, but my fame and the number of people I had saved could have been enough to avoid reincarnation and ascend as a Heroic Spirit.

No matter how much I looked around, I found nothing but darkness. This certainly wasn't what was in EMIYA's memories. He might have not been a proper Heroic Spirit, but as a Counter Guardian he was very close existence to one. Perpetual darkness and silence was not what the Throne of Heroes was.

If nothing was to happen then I was going to act.

I reached around searching my surroundings. It took faster than I expected when I touched something. I had barely needed to push my arms to feel what seemed like a hard and smooth surface. Probing around showed I likely was touching wall and it wasn't straight. It felt curved in nature. The dark walls seemed the length of my arms and legs.

My entire body shifted forward and I felt it roll forward off one side of the wall.

It felt like I was inside some container of some sort. A circular one if my guess was right.

I continued to push forward and my entire body rolled until I felt the wall hit something solid. A second later, I heard a loud crack as light entered my eyes and felt fresh air breeze over my body.

Finally, I could learn where I was!

"My baby, you finally hatched!" A loud and majestic voice cheered happily.

The words I had just heard might have left me confused if it wasn't for the unbelievable sight before me. Staring at me was a unbelievable sight in the Age of Men. It was of a creature spoken of myth and legends, often seen as the powerful creatures beneath the gods. I was staring at dragon!

If the sight of a dragon shocked me then I wasn't prepared for the reflection within the dragon's eyes.

I saw a small and adorable looking baby dragon with parts of an egg over its body.

A sneaking suspicion grew in my mind as I recalled what I had experienced after my eyes had closed before the repairing nuclear reactor.

"My baby," The dragon chirped in a language that instinctively I knew was Draconic, the natural tongue of dragons. "Welcome to the world!"

- O -

Twenty-five years later

I gasped for breath. The fresh air entered my lungs as my eyes opened. The airs in my lung and what little I saw with my eyes immediately confirmed that my magic ritual had been a success. The ambient mana in the air was a fraction of what it was in the Reverse Side of the World. My vision couldn't compare to the last thirties that I had come to enjoy.

A mental command later and my body seemed so alien. It responded but sluggishly and, in a manner, as if I had not used it in a long time. I brought my hands up and see the pinkish color of human flesh.

It took about a minute for me to get my body sitting up. The movement of the human body having become a distant memory after thirties years as a dragon hatchling.

I looked around to see human corpses around me.

My eyes narrowed as I saw the familiar-looking guns. Information from my Reality Marble told me that the guns were the same design as I had used or fought against in the past, but the materials they were made was very different. A metal alloy of steel that I had never encountered before. It was sufficient stronger and lighter, almost reminding me of mithril. Almost as if this steel alloy had taken inspiration from the rare magical metal.

If the material of the firearms and armor was baffling then the corpses of many familiar Phantasm Species shocked me. This was not the Reverse Side of the World, but the surface (the Human World) where Phantasmal Species shouldn't exist anymore.

"Lieutenant Yi! You're still alive?" a voice shouted from nearby. I recognised the spoken language was in Korean. "Don't just sit there! We got to get out of here. Reporting the status of this Gate is top-most priority."

One soldier rushed to my side and helped me out while the other soldiers surrounded the area with the rifles drawn.

"Snap out of it, sir!" the soldier that seemed to be in charge shouted while tossing me a rifle.

I caught the rifle and instinctively racked the bolt to inspect for any jams or if the bullet was in the chamber. This reaction pleased me as it informed me the body I was now inhabiting was functioning like I had desired before the magic ritual.

Looking at the soldier in charge, I noticed his rank insignia. It was four stripes of Sergeant of the South Korean Army. On his name tag was the name, Gam Hak-Kun.

"Sergeant Gam, what's our status?" I demanded in Korean as I accessed the soldiers around me.

"Sir, our platoon is less than half strength. We got twelve soldiers left, and everyone is has various degrees of minor injuries." The Sergeant replied.

"You are in command sergeant. I must have suffered head injuries that are affecting my memories and judgement. I don't ever recall why we were sent here." I lied, hoping that the sergeant would believe it.

The sergeant glanced at me with concern for moment before looking relieved. I certainly would if I was in his shoes. Many non-commision officer didn't like a younger commisoned officer who had less experience in the military as them, and the body I now inhabitated seemed to belong to that category given the sergeant's response.

"Changmin, you got lucky! It's your turn as to take point!"

"Oh, I must be unlucky today," grumbled one soldier as he walked up with his rifles ready.

The rest of the remaining platoon followed behind the pointman, and I naturally went with the flow. I was situated right in the middle of the formation, and it made me uncomfortable as anyone that launched an ambush would attack the middle as that was the most protected area of the formation and where a high priority target like the officer would be located.

I might have not been familiar with the exact South Korean army's military protocols, but I had trained and worked with soldiers and mercenaries from all around the world to have a rough gist of what to do.

My rifle roamed as I scanned my surroundings for any threat as the unit proceeded through the forest. Wherever we way, it was certainly not South Korea. I recognised several plants from Europe, which korean soldiers rarely ever operated in outside of their native homeland.

We didn't travel too far until the pointman made military hand signs to the rest of the unit.

Hold up. Enemies ahead. Enemy outpost. Counting ten sentries. Estimate thirty soldiers.

Sergeant Gam looked towards me, even when I had told him he was in command due to my head injuries.

I sighed and hand gestured to the unit. Spread out. Prepare to launch an ambush on my command.

The unit nodded their heads and spread out while using the thick vegatation as camoflange.

Sergeant Gam closely followed me as I approached the pointman, one Private Ja Changmin. There I got a good view of the "enemies" that the private had reported. I had first been expecting enemy human soldiers as I had rarely encountered magical creatures with the support of soldiers.

My expectations were quickly proven wrong when I noticed the enemy was a creature I had seen during my twenty-five years as a dragon hatchling. Goblins, and the bottom of the barrel given their use of improvised weapons like wooden clubs and sharpened stone attached to wooden sticks or their primitive animal skin clothing.

I unloaded the magazine of my rifle and inspected the munition inside. It was the 5.56x45mm rifle rounds like I had been expecting. In the double-stack, thirty round magazine, the first round was armor-piercing and the second was hollow point. I couldn't see the third round, but I presumed the magazine rotated between an armor piercing and hollow point. It seemed like a good combination if you were facing monsters faced multiple different monsters. One magazine could deal with both unarmored and armored targets without switching magazines filled with a certain munition type.

The most eye-catching aspect was that the bullet contained Mana. Without it wouldn't be able to damage beings like Servants that were immune to all damage not containing mana.

Looking down to my chest rig, I ignored the armor plate inserts that were clearly not the steel or ceremic commonly used. There were ten 5.56x45mm 30-round magazines and two fragmentation grenades. A inspection revealed 6 of my magazines were a two-round mix of AP and HP rounds. 2 magazines were purely AP and the last 2 were purely HP rounds.

If my chest rig was set up like this then the rest of the unit was likely equipped similarly…

I leaned over and whispered, "Do we have any machine gunners or grenadiers?"

"No, Lieutenant." Sergeant Gam shook his head. "Well our platoon's machine gunners and grenadiers were either killed off or the survived and discarded their weapons given lack of ammunition. We are down to rifles, pistols and couple of grenades."

I was tempted to transform into my dragon form and unleash a couple of Breaths. If I suppressed my draconic instincts of my current life then I could fire a barrage of arrows or launch a couple weapons. Shaking my head, neither two options were on the table. It would defeat two and half decades of my preparation to escape the Reverse Side and return to the human world. I was not blowing my cover when my current body of the Lieutenant Yi definitely seemed like an ordinary soldier.

"Switch to Hollow Points." I ordered into my radio.

There was a quiet crackle of the radio from my headset as the unit responded.

"Fire upon my command." I lined up the red-dot sight on the largest and oldest goblin. "Three. Two. One. Mark!"

Several gunshots erased the previously quiet of the silence.

My shot hit the goblin leader right where its heart would be. The entry wound was barely noticable, a pin-sized hole, but the exit wound was no laughing matter. A basketball sized amount of blood and flesh erupted from the back of the goblin leader.

Some of the goblins screamed in pain as they were hit in the head, but most of them were not outright killed if not hit in the neck. I frowned and made a note to rectify this mistake. Hollow point rounds were capable of penetrating thinner and delicate bones didn't have a high chance of hitting through the skull that was the thickest bone of most creatures. The soldiers that had shot the head with hollow point round clearly needed retraining.

About half of the gunshots hit the center mass of the torso like my shot.

The remaining goblins didn't take too long to be taken out as more gunshots silenced the reminder.

"Good work," I said loudly while walking out of the forest's thick foliage with my rifle still aimed. "Make sure every goblin is dead." As to back up my point, I put in one round into every goblin corpse's chest close to me. "Sound off."

Ten soldiers reported relevant information that I as the commander should know such as their physical condition, set of their weapon, munitions, and supplies.

"Sergeant Gam," I said while looking into the sergeant's eyes, "you are to oversee what supplies we can scavenge. I will see what intel we can gather."

I left before the sergeant could respond. The first place was the largest and most decorated tent. Many things transcended species and a superior showing off his wealth was one of them. My guess quickly proven correct when I found parchments filled with writings and maps.

A human might not understand the written language, but I did thanks to my 25 years as a dragon hatchling. My upbringing included learning the many languages used by the myraid races inhabiting the Reverse Side. I couldn't understand everything as the Goblin language was written in a dialect I wasn't too familiar with.

My reading reached the point where Gate and invasion was mentioned several times when Sergeant Gam rushed into the tent.

"Sergeant, what's the problem?" I asked in an irritated tone as I felt a crucial piece of information had been interrupted.

"Sir, we located the Gate, but we can't exit. A large group of goblins and orcs were spotted a kilometer away. At their current speed, they should arrive within thirty minutes." Sergeant Gam reported.

I walked out of the tent and noticed a large cloud of dust kicked up into the air. With mana channeled into my legs, I leapt with superhuman strength into the air and one of the nearby watchtowers. It was there I could barely make out number of goblins and orcs coming into the camp.

My mana heightened eyes looked at the distant monsters like I was using a telescope. The number became apparent. 921 goblins and 246 orcs. They were also well better equipped and more experienced than the goblins that my unit had taken out not to long ago. The slain goblins had seemed like conscripts or a militia while the coming monsters were proper soldiers.

The situation wasn't good given the amount of munition left. We barely had enough to take out a tenth of the monsters before we run out of bullets and grenades.

I frowned in displeasure. My plan had been to hide my draconic nature. If I returned to my dragon form then the terrifying aura known as Dragon Fear and a couple of Breaths could resolve the problem.

"What am I thinking?" I slapped my forehead.

Another solution was clear. I could use my magecraft from my previous life as a human. There was one problem. Suspicion would fall upon me if I demonstrated abilities that my host body had never possessed.

Still, that was a problem I could worry about later. I might not be a human anymore, but I still wanted to save everyone I could.

I was about to use Projection magecraft when noticed more clouds of dust in the distance. Turning to see the new clouds, I noticed there were more goblins and orcs. Some of the sources of cloud even had larger and more powerful monsters like ogres. A quick glance brought my estimate to the thousands.

"Sweet mother of earth! How are we supposed to handle this?"

"We are going to die!"

"This isn't a C-rank Dungeons! It's either an A or S rank Dungeon!"

"I don't care if I am going to die. I signed up as a soldier to protect the people, but unless the top guilds handle this then Gangnam is doomed!"

Suddenly, my hands reached for underneath my chest rig and shirt without my conscious decision. I reached for necklace with a small bounded book hanging on it. My eyes widened when I recognized the nature of the book.

Once more, my hands moved without my violation, grabbing the book and knelt onto the ground.

"I, Yi Sun-Jun, call upon my ancestor, the Duke of Loyalty and Warfare.
Please protect our homeland that you fought for in life.
Don't let the enemies of the Korean people to play with, torture and kill us.
Please for the sake of the nation answer this call!
"

- O -

On the busiest and largest street in Gangnam was a huge Gate flickered between blue and red. The sign of an imminent Dungeon Break if the Boss past the Gate and inside the Dungeon was not killed. A large crowd of civilians gathered around with police cordoning off the immediate area around the Gate.

"Will the Hunters Guild be raiding the A-rank Dungeon right now?"

"Cha-ssi! What are you plans? Will you proceed like normal or attempt a Raid in a manner no one has tried before!"

"What is the Hunters Guild expecting to make after this Dungeon Raid?!"

An attractive young woman with gray eyes and blonde hair in a bob cut ignored the crowd of reporters attempting to get her attention. Her red-themed armor glittered from the constant flashes of cameras popping off. A hand was not to far from her black sword as if ready to grip the silver hilt and prepared to pull the weapon in case of a possible Dungeon Break.

"Vice Guild Master, how should we proceed?" asked Son Kihoon, the Attack Force B Raid Leader.

"We start the Raid right away. The Gate might disappear anytime and we cannot allow a dungeon break in Gangnam to happen," replied Cha Hae-In, a Korean S-Rank Hunter and the Vice-Guild Master of the Hunters Guild.

"You heard the Vice Guild Master. We set off immediately, Second Raid Squad!"

The Second Raid Squad made up of the second strongest and experienced group of Hunters for the Hunters Guild. Within seconds they gathered up and prepared to enter the Gate.

The Hunters had been prepared to fight all sorts of monsters, equipped with all manner of equipment and skills. They had fought many Dungeons of various ranks up to A-rank so they knew what they doing. Yet, nothing prepared them for the sight before them.

"Those who seek death shall live. Those who seek life shall die," roared a figure that wore armor eerily similar to one of Korea's greatest national heroes. "Fear will keep you alive, but do not let it blind you. Use the fear as a reminder you are still alive and fighting for a future."

If the Hunters ignored the remarkable resemblance of the speaker's armor had to a national hero then the creature he stood on top of was even more bizarre. It was gigantic turtle with a head of an eastern dragon. The armored shell was hollow as soldiers dressed in traditional armor from the 16th century Joseon dynasty operated cannons from the same time period from inside.

All manner of monsters from the small and lowly E-ranked goblins to D-rank orcs and C-rank ogres launched at attack at the gigantic turtle. Large metal spikes easily the size of human leg appeared when a monster attempted to land onto the turtle to skewer them to death before disappearing.

Fire and smoke bellowed out from the dragon head, burning the monsters or poisoning them with deadly gas.

The turtle stepped and crushed monster underneath its legs.

It moved its body around, swaying around and smashing everything in its path.

The Hunters all native Koreans, or naturalized Korean that had return to their roots, stared at the battlefield then at each other.

"Doesn't the sight remind you of a certain legend?"

"A certain legend that has to do with iron-clad boat right?"

"The problem is we are not looking at a boat…"

"Well… It isn't a boat, but it's named had a name of animal we are seeing…"

"The turtle is missing its natural head but has a dragon's head."

"The same as the legendary boat."

"Vice Guild Master," said Son Kihoon as he looked at his superior in the eyes. "I think we might be looking at–"

"The Geobukseon." Cha Hae-In nodded to her second in command. "I don't know how any of this is happening." Her gaze turned to the figure wearing nationally recognized armor and now yielding iconic double dragon swords to cut down monsters. "We may be looking at our nation's greatest hero, Yi Sun Shin."
