"Mama."
Jack's frightened voice and the tug on her nightgown sleeve brought Elizabeth toward wakefulness. She felt the soft mattress beneath her and tried to figure out where she was. The fact that they had made it to Brookfield and was not camping out again came back to her.
"Mama," the plea came again, sounding louder now that she was more awake.
Focusing on the sound, Elizabeth's eyes fell on the scared expression of her son as he stood at the side of the bed. Moving carefully, trying not to wake Nathan, Elizabeth sat up and reached out for the boy.
"What is it, sweetheart?" Elizabeth asked, as she lifted the boy up onto the bed.
"I dreamt that Nathan was mad that Nate is being included in the cer . . . cere . . . in the events tomorrow and put me in jail. He did not want to but Mounties have to put bad people in jail. I was bad. While in jail, Lucas found me and started hurting me."
Elizabeth wrapped her arms around Jack and held her close to him. "It was just a bad dream, my sweet boy. You are not in jail. You are in the hotel room with me," she said, purposely leaving Nathan's name in case the mention of his name continued to upset Jack after the dream.
"Should I be in jail?" Jack asked tearfully. "I was bad."
Elizabeth opened her mouth to speak but Nathan beat her to it.
"Mounties do not put four-year-olds in jail, Jack," Nathan said, his voice soft and reassuring.
"Are you sure?" Jack asked, his head pillowed against Elizabeth as she stroked his hair with one hand.
"I am positive," Nathan replied. "Laws are different for minors. You are even too young to be put in one of the special schools for boys who are repeat offenders."
"What about Nate being included in the wedding? Are you upset about that?" Jack asked lifting his head and turning to look at Nathan.
The adults had all gotten a kick out of watching Nate follow Jack around at New Hope Orphanage that night. As Jack had become the ring bearer a couple of weeks ago, when Gabriel's nephew had gotten hurt and could no longer be the ring bearer, Faith had said how everyone would get a kick out of watching the duckling follow Jack down the aisle during the ceremony.
"Are you sure?" Gabriel had asked his fiancé.
"Yes," Faith replied. "Jack will be thrilled and it will put everyone in a good mood. Just do not tie the rings to the duckling, Gabriel Kinslow. I do not want the wedding bands waddling away."
"I am not upset," Nathan told him. "This is Miss Faith's and Uncle Gabe's wedding. If they want to include the duckling that is their choice."
"So there is no chance of me ending up in jail with Lucas?"
"No chance at all," Nathan assured him. "Would you like to sleep here between your mother and me, tonight?" he asked the boy. A cot had been set up in the room for the boy to use.
Jack nodded.
Reaching out, Nathan took the boy from Elizabeth. He pressed a kiss to Jack's temple as he and Elizabeth scooted over to make room between them. Nathan then placed Jack under the sheet as he and Elizabeth settled back down in the bed.
"After tomorrow would Miss Faith become Aunt Faith?" Jack asked.
"Typically, that is how it would work," Elizabeth said, her voice in teacher mode. "However, Uncle Gabe is your uncle by choice, not by blood, so perhaps you should ask Miss Faith if you could call her aunt. I have a feeling she would like that."
"I will ask her tomorrow," Jack declared, closing his eyes.
In the dim light of the room, Elizabeth looked across Jack and found Nathan's gaze. Though she could not make out their color in the lighting, Elizabeth could see their crystal blue color in her mind as he gazed back at her.
Lucas had never bothered trying to soothe Jack's fears. He would not have suggested Jack sleep with them after a nightmare. More than likely, Lucas would have simply taken Jack back to his room even if the boy was still upset.
Reaching out, Elizabeth found Nathan's hand. She gave it a thankful squeeze and then held onto it. Their hands remained clasped as they rested on the little boy who had already fallen back to sleep, his fears soothed by the words and proximity of his parents.
As Lillian and Elizabeth finished helping her get ready, Faith gave out a content sigh. Yes, this past week had been a busy one but things had gone smoothly. She and Gabriel had gotten plenty of help getting ready for their special event.
"Thank you both for everything you have done," Faith told them both.
"You're welcome," Lillian replied. "After all you have done for the children in my care while you were the doctor here, it is the least I could do."
"I hardly feel like I have done much," Elizabeth admitted.
Faith turned and took Elizabeth's hands in hers. "You are here, and you have put in a lot of work last night and this morning. Given all you have been through lately, no one would have blamed you for simply staying at home, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth's cheeks turned pink. "Perhaps so, but that would have been the selfish thing to do. Gabriel is Nathan's best friend. Not to mention Gabriel has been wonderful to Jack, as have you. I have not been a good friend to you Faith, over the last couple of years. I have not been a good friend to anyone but you have still been there for me. I know I need to start being a better friend, and as I have a feeling you and I will be spending time together because of our husbands, helping out with today is the least I can do."
"I am looking forward to it," Faith told her.
"Jack and I are ready," Ally announced coming into the room, her step brother at her side. Jack held Nate who had a navy blue ribbon tied loosely in a bow around his neck. Ally was to be a bridesmaid.
"You both look great," Faith replied.
"You are very pretty Miss Faith," Ally replied.
"Thank you, Ally," Faith replied.
"After you say 'I do' to Uncle Gabe, can we call you Aunt Faith?" Jack asked. Though she did not say anything, Faith could tell by the look in Ally's eyes that the teen liked that idea herself.
Faith smiled. She had quickly learned that Gabriel and Nathan were as close as any brothers. Gabriel had always claimed Ally as one of his nieces and since Nathan had married Elizabeth, he had accepted Jack as family as well. Faith was honored to be included into the 'honorary' family.
"I would like that very much," Faith told the boy, holding her arms out for a hug.
"Hug Miss Faith carefully, Jack," Elizabeth advised. "We don't want to wrinkle her dress."
"I hardly doubt Gabriel will notice the wrinkles," Faith said lightly as she hugged both Jack and Ally.
"I am happy to have another aunt," Ally told her.
Faith's older brother Jeff stepped into the room. "Everything is ready, outside," he announced. "All we need is the bride."
"The bride is all ready," Lillian announced. "Let me go get everyone else in their places. You make your appearance when the music changes," she reminded Faith.
The music was being provided by Rosemary on her flute.
"I will," Faith assured her. "Go. I want to say 'I do' to the man of my dreams."
Lillian hugged her. Elizabeth then leaned in and gave her friend a hug. "I did not bring him back from the ball for you, but you found your Mountie after all," she whispered in Faith's ear.
"That I did," Faith said with a musical like laugh.
Faith watched them go. This was the happiest she had ever been in her life.
Jeff walked over to her as she stood up. "Are you ready, little sister?" he asked.
"I am," Faith told him.
"You found a good man," Jeff told her. "I have spent the morning asking Gabriel all the questions that Dad told me to and a few of my own and he hasn't faltered under the pressure at all," he told her lightly.
"Jeff!" Faith admonished, though she was not surprised that Gabriel was not bothered by the interrogation. She had a feeling it would take much more than a concerned older brother to intimidate Gabriel.
"We just love you," Jeff told her. "The fact that Gabriel was willing to come spend part of his honeymoon visiting dad says a whole lot about the man you are marrying, Faith. You are going to be happy. I imagine Mom is smiling down on you today."
"I sure hope so," Faith said.
Jeff held his arm out to her and Faith slipped hers through her brother's. It was time to walk down the aisle to her waiting groom.
Gabriel stood in the gazebo with Joseph and Nathan while the guests got settled in the chairs. The morning had gone quickly but smoothly. Everything was ready. His entire family, even little Ned with his arm in a cast, had made it to Brookfield. Many of the people he had served for several years had turned out. There were even the familiar faces from Hope Valley and the weather was perfect.
"Looks like they are ready," Joseph commented. Gabriel glanced in the direction Joseph had been looking to see Lillian waving, at the foot of the porch steps to the house.
"If you forget to breathe and faint, I'll be ready to catch you," Nathan teased.
"I've got some smelling salts in my pocket if we need to use them," Joe chimed in.
Gabriel just smiled at his friends. He was in too good a mood to let anything bother him today. As Rosemary started playing her flute, all eyes turned to the end of the aisle created by the chairs. About midway down the aisle, Vincent had set up the late Mr. Walsh's box camera that Lillian had been letting the boy learn how to use.
The first two down the aisle were Jack and Gabriel's niece Alexa as flower girl. A soft laughter went through the crowd, as they spotted Nate, sporting his bow, trailing behind the two children. Every now and then, the duckling would stop and play with one of the flower petals that Alexa was dropping as she walked. Then, seeing he was being left behind, Nate would scurry ahead as fast as he feet would carry him. Behind Jack and Alexa came Ally and then Lillian. By the time Lillian was starting down the aisle, Jack had reached the gazebo. Squatting down, Nathan took the pillow with the rings tied on it from the boy and instructed him to pick up the duckling. Jack did so, the duckling going easily to him and then settling down in his arms.
Gabriel glanced to Vincent. When he had the teen's attention, Gabriel pointed to Jack. Vincent smiled and nodded his head, indicating that he had gotten a picture.
As the music changed, Gabriel's eyes sought out his bride. As he spotted her, Gabriel inhaled quickly. She was always beautiful, but even more so today. The snow white dress fit her perfectly. The bodice was fitted to her figure, with the skirt hanging loosely in folds, stopping about an inch above the ground. The long sleeves of the dress were lace so that the dress was not too warm for the fall day. A white ruffle of chiffon encircled her shoulders. Though she wore a veil, it hung down the back, not obscuring her radiant smile.
"You may want to breathe or the best man might be catching you after all," Joseph said softly as he leaned toward Gabriel.
Gabriel let out the breath he had been holding, though his eyes remained on his bride as she made her way to him. Though he must have said and done the right things during the ceremony, it was all lost in a haze of happiness to him. Before he knew it, Joseph was saying he could kiss his bride.
Stepping closer, Gabriel did just that, savoring the feel and taste of her lips against his. It was Faith who pulled back from the kiss. As she did so, Joseph's words penetrated the haze of happiness.
"I now present to you, Constable and Mrs. Kinslow," Joseph announced.
The gathered guests broke out in applause, as Faith took his hand. As she turned to face their gathered guests, Gabriel did as well, though his eyes were still on his bride. As the applause faded away, Rosemary began to play again. With Faith's hand still grasped in his, the two stepped down from the gazebo.
"You may want to watch where you are walking," Nathan teased quietly as Gabriel walked by him.
Gabriel did not bother acknowledging Nathan's words, though he did finally look away from Faith and looked around at their gathered guests. Behind him, Nathan sent Jack down the aisle with Alexa whom Lillian was prompting. He then held his arm out for Lillian to take. Behind them, Joe offered his arm to Ally, the teen beaming as she felt quite grown up.
While chairs were moved from the spot by the gazebo, to around the tables set up in the yard, the wedding party and Faith and Gabriel's family members posed for some formal shots taken by Vincent. The meal would be buffet style but before the line was formed, Joseph said a quick blessing over the meal. The wedding party went through the line first. It wasn't until they were done eating that Nathan stood and gave a short best man speech.
"That was the shortest speech ever," Gabriel teased him as Nathan resumed his seat next to the groom.
"If you wanted longer, you should have picked a different best man," Nathan replied. "Besides, it didn't look like you were aware of anything other than Faith during the ceremony anyway."
Gabriel looked over at Faith sitting beside him. "Can you blame me?" he asked quietly.
A Victrola had been set up on the porch of the house. Moving close to the porch so the music could be heard, Gabriel and Faith shared their first dance. Afterwards, other couples joined them as Sam kept the music going. Whether dancing, mingling with guests or simply resting in chairs, Gabriel and Faith were side by side for the duration of the reception.
Eventually though, guests began to leave. Gabriel knew he still had a drive to Clearwater before he and Faith would truly be alone. Before they could get in Ronnie's car though, the newlyweds sought out Elizabeth.
"As we won't see you again until we return from our honeymoon there is something Gabriel and I wanted to ask you before we leave for Clearwater," Faith told her as the trio stood by the gazebo.
"You do not need to keep it from Nathan, but other than that, we would like for you to keep the information quiet for now," Gabriel added.
"Of course," Elizabeth replied. "What is if?"
"Faith and I are going to adopt Vincent. As it did not seem right to tell him we wanted to adopt him and then leave him alone for two weeks, we decided to wait until after the honeymoon to make it official though Lillian and Grace know about our attention."
"Oh, he is going to be thrilled," Elizabeth said happily. "It is easy to see how much that boy looks up to you, Gabriel."
Gabriel nodded. "Vincent has been at New Hope Orphanage since I returned to Brookfield after the bank robbery. While serving Brookfield, I tried to make sure the children here felt special. I wanted them to know they were a part of the community. In doing so, I have spent a lot of time with Vincent. At his age, chances are he would most likely age out of the orphanage and then be out on his own. I am sure Lillian and Grace would make sure he knew he was welcome anytime, but it still wouldn't be the same as having family. We want to make sure that when Vincent ventures off on his own that he has a foundation of support behind him to pursue those dreams."
"You and Faith are going to be good parents to him," Elizabeth said.
"We definitely plan to try," Faith said. "Our concern is the schooling situation in Hope Valley. While the boys seem to have an easier time dealing with Mr. Hudson than the girls, there still has not been much praise for the man. We do not want Vincent to get discouraged and not want to go to school, so we were hoping you might consider home schooling him along with Ally and Opal?"
Elizabeth did not hesitate with her answer. "I will find a way to fit him into our school day when he comes to Hope Valley," she assured her friends. "Just make sure you get his records from the school here in Brookfield so I know where he is at in his studies."
"We will," Gabriel assured her. "Thank you for being willing to make room for him. I know adding him will make your task more complicated but neither Faith nor I were sure how to get a routine with home schooling given the unpredictable nature of our jobs."
Elizabeth laughed. "I use to teach in a one room schoolhouse with twenty students. I think I can manage three."
"I'm sure you can," Faith said. "Still, we do thank you for doing this for us."
"You are welcome," Elizabeth told them, giving first Faith and then Gabriel a hug. "You enjoy your honeymoon."
Gabriel looped his arm around Faith's waist and pulled her close. "We will," he commented as Nathan joined them.
"Sorry to interrupt, but the bride and groom's chauffeur is getting impatient. All your luggage has been loaded into the car," Nathan told them.
"I appreciate that," Gabriel said, giving his friend a quick hug.
"It is no problem at all," Nathan assured him. "I have also made arrangements with the Clearwater hotel for you to have supper in your room upon your arrival. I figured you would probably prefer to hide away for the rest of the evening."
Faith blushed at the comment, even as Gabriel agreed with Nathan's statement.
The two couples started walking toward Ronnie and the waiting car. Though most of the guests had left by this time, good-byes were said to Lillian, Sam, Eleanor, Grace, Chuck, the kids at the orphanage, Ally and Jack at the car. That group waving to them was the site that Gabriel and Faith had as Ronnie started the drive to Clearwater.
Giving a sigh, Faith let her head fall to Gabriel's shoulder as they rode in the back seat.
"I never knew a wedding could be so exhausting," Faith commented.
Gabriel looped an arm around his bride and held her close. "I will not be offended if you sleep during the drive. It has been a long day."
"Good," Faith replied. "A little sleep is exactly what I need I think."
As Faith closed her eyes, Gabriel placed a kiss to the top of her head. He was looking forward to telling her goodnight but being able to keep her at his side tonight.
