Chapter 30: Pinkie Goes Silent
Pinkie Pie was always an energetic talkative girl. She enjoyed talking with her friends on the phone, in the hallway and cafeteria at school, and on the computer. She liked talking to her family at dinner, when they played games or watched TV, she even said hello to complete strangers.
While her friends and family knew that this was just how Pinkie was, but sometimes they wished she could be quiet for just a day.
But then Pinkie's throat began hurting. Her parents made an appointment to take her to the doctor. The doctor checked her over, and came up with a diagnosis.
"Well Pinkie it seems like your tonsils are causing the problem." Dr. Horse told her.
"What's to be done?" asked Igneous Rock.
"I think it's best we take her tonsils out."
That surprised the Pies.
"You mean have an operation?" wondered Cloudy Quartz.
"Not to worry. It's a simple procedure." assured Dr. Horse.
"But what'll happen to my throat afterwards?" Pinkie wanted to know.
"After a tonsillectomy your throat will have some swelling and you won't be able to talk for a while."
And then he and her parents started discussing a date for the operation. Pinkie was feeling nervous, she'd never had an operation before.
The following day at school, Pinkie told her friends about the surgery.
"It's a little scary." she confessed.
"Don't worry, Pinkie. It'll be okay." comforted Twilight.
"Yeah, I had mine out when I was a kid." Rainbow Dash piped up.
"And Big Mac had his out a couple years ago." added Applejack.
"And I heard you can get a lot of ice cream afterwards." mentioned Fluttershy.
Pinkie perked up at hearing that.
"Ice cream seriously?" she asked.
"Yes, but that's only when you feel up to eating it." Rarity reminded.
"I know that. But I won't be able to talk for a while afterwards."
"Don't worry. It'll be okay." Twilight told her.
About a week later, Pinkie was at the hospital getting ready for her operation. Her parents and her sisters were there in her hospital room with her. She'd been assigned a nurse named, Nurse Redheart, and she gave Pinkie a hospital gown to wear, and then gave her a little check up.
"You're all ready for surgery, Pinkie. I'll just let Dr. Horse know. Be right back."
And she left the room.
"Now don't worry, Pinkamina. Everything will be fine." assured Igneous Rock.
"Okay, Dad."
"And we'll be waiting for you when you wake up."
"Thanks, Mom."
"Hey, Pinkie. Boulder would like to say good luck." Maud piped up.
She held out her pet rock to her.
"Thanks, Boulder." Pinkie said, petting the rock.
Just then, Nurse Redheart came in with Dr. Horse pushing a gurney.
"All right, Pinkie, we're ready for you." Dr. Horse informed.
After getting some hugs and kisses, Pinkie got onto the gurney, and she was wheeled away.
"Well at least we'll get some peace and quiet for the next couple of days." Limestone said.
"Limestone." hissed her parents.
In the operating room, Pinkie greeted the other doctors and nurses and they got ready to put her under.
"All right, Pinkie we're going to put you under now." informed Dr. Horse.
"Okay." Pinkie replied.
Nurse Redheart put an IV in her hand, and a clear mask was placed over her mouth and nose.
"Count backwards from 10."
"10,9...8." Pinkie counted, and then she fell asleep.
Hours later, Pinkie was opening her eyes again. Her parents were there standing by her bed.
"Hello, Pinkie." said Cloudy Quartz softly.
"Mom?" Pinkie croaked.
"Shh, Pinkie you best not speak for a while." she told her.
"The doctor said everything went great. And you should have your voice back in a few days." Igneous Rock informed.
A while later, Pinkie was discharged from the hospital and was being driven back home, her sisters made sure she was comfortable in the back with them.
For the rest of the day, Pinkie stayed in bed, playing on her phone, watching TV, and texting her friends. That evening, she was served some warm soup and juice.
"You can stay home tomorrow Pinkie, but after that you'll be going back to school." Cloudy Quartz told her, as she gave her the tray of food.
Pinkie nodded.
"Good. And we have some ice cream in fridge for dessert." Pinkie perked up at hearing that.
The day after the next, Pinkie went back to school. Her friends were there waiting for her at the entrance.
"Hi, Pinkie how are you feeling?" asked Twilight.
Pinkie pulled out her cell phone, and started typing something. Then she showed her message to her friends. It read,
"I'm okay. I'll be using notes to communicate."
"Okay, Pinkie." replied Fluttershy.
Then the bell rang, and the girls went inside the building.
As the day went on, Pinkie didn't say a word. At first it was peaceful, but then Pinkie's friends began to feel like something was missing. Things were just too...quiet and even a little boring. During one of their classes together, Applejack and Rarity spoke quietly.
"You know, it's kinda borin' around here." Applejack told.
"I have to agree." agreed Rarity.
"By now we would be talking about some story she told us or still giggling about a joke."
"At least it's only temporary."
"Girls." came a voice.
The two looked up at Miss Matilda.
"No talking."
"Sorry." the girls replied, and went back to work.
Pinkie was also feeling a bit down. There so many things she wanted to say, so many jokes she wanted to make, so many comments she had, and she wanted to tell people about her experience. But she couldn't speak a word.
As she was walking down the hall, she saw her friends. She wanted to call out to them, but she couldn't.
When Cloudy Quartz picked the girls up, Pinkie usually started a conversation about how her day and what happened at school. But the whole ride home, it was quiet.
"So girls how was school today?" she asked.
"Fine." answered Limestone.
"Anything interesting or new happen?"
"No." replied Maud.
"Oh, okay."
And the rest of the ride room was quiet. At home, the Pies had to admit, things weren't really the same. The girls just mainly stayed in their rooms doing their things, and when the got bored with that they watched TV.
At dinner, everyone just sat around the table and ate. To try and break the awkward silence Igneous Rock spoke up.
"Well work was pretty interesting today."
"Oh, do tell dear." encouraged Cloudy Quartz.
He then began telling about his day at the office which was frankly kinda boring.
"That's nice, Dad." replied Limestone.
Pinkie just stared at her plate and ate her food.
For the next two days, everyone awaited for when Pinkie would talk again. And then the day came, when she could speak again. When she came downstairs for breakfast her whole family was waiting for her.
"Good morning, Pinkie." said Cloudy Quartz.
Everyone waited for her to respond, and after what seemed like forever Pinkie said,
"Good morning everyone!"
Everyone burst out in smiles.
"It feels good to hear your voice again Pinkie." told Maud.
"You got that right." Limestone agreed.
Marble nodded in agreement.
"We're glad you're all better, dear." Igneous Rock replied.
"Me too." Pinkie answered.
They all shared a family hug.
At school, Pinkie saw her friends waiting for her.
"Hiya, girls." she greeted happily.
"Pinkie you can talk again." said Fluttershy.
"You bet."
"Congratulations on getting your voice back." Twilight told her.
"It feels good to be able to talk again."
"And we missed hearing your voice." added Rarity.
"Yeah, it was starting to get boring around here." Rainbow Dash informed.
"So Pinkie, anything you got to say?" Applejack asked.
"You bet."
And Pinkie started chattering away as they walked down the hallway.
