Royal Woods, a peaceful town settled in east Michigan, was currently in a buzz as the police were arresting the intoxicated driver of an 18-wheeler. While under the influence, he had collided with a blue minivan, totaling it completely. While that happened, the paramedics were currently taking three bodies from the wreckage of the minivan and loading them into the ambulance.
"Damn. These poor people. And one of them was just a teen? They didn't deserve this," one of the paramedics sighed as his co-worker gave a nod.
"Yeah, I think I know these people. They have another kid who's in school right now," she sighed as she closed the door and got into the vehicle and drove off.
*Royal Woods Elementary*
Principal Huggins was sitting at his desk clutching the bridge of his nose in despair, all while Cheryl whipped her eyes clean of tears. They had received the call from the police once the bodies were identified.
"Principal," she spoke as he gave a solemn nod. "I know, Cheryl, I know. Call Lincoln in here," he spoke in a low tone as she nodded and walked over to the intercom.
"...Would Lincoln Wilkes come to the front office? Lincoln Wilkes to the front office, please," she announced to the school.
Agnes Johnson was in the middle of teaching her class when the announcement came through. Her eyebrow raised an eyebrow for two reasons. One, she didn't think Lincoln was in trouble for any reason. After all, while he was a little rough around the edges, like the rest of the kids in her class, Lincoln was still one of her best students, right along with his best friend, Clyde McBride.
But two, she could hear the somber tone in Cheryl's voice, when she made the announcement. She had a bad feeling about this.
"Well…Lincoln, I supposed you should go," she spoke as Lincoln gave a nod, before grabbing his backpack off the floor and making his way to the principal's office.
"I wonder what's going on?" he muttered to himself as he walked down the hall and entered the office and saw Principal Huggins standing at the window with his hands behind his back all while Cheryl was sitting at her desk sobbing lightly.
"Uhhhh Principal Huggins?...Did I…do something wrong?" he asked as he took a seat all while Huggins gave a sigh. "No, Lincoln. You didn't do anything wrong…but…I'm afraid I have to give you some bad news…"
The aged man had to take a moment to gather his thoughts, bowing his head and closing his eyes, before looking up and into the eyes of the concerned boy, and finally sat down in front of him.
"Lincoln, there was…an accident earlier today…Your parents and your sister….they were hit from the side by a drunk driver, and…I'm sorry, Lincoln, but…they didn't make it," he spoke sadly. When he was done, the only sound to be heard was the sound of Lincoln's backpack hitting the floor.
Lincoln felt his blood run cold, his heart all but stop, and his face turn paler than his hair.
"Lincoln…I am so sorry." Cheryl spoke, hugging him tight. Lincoln said nothing as his mind was all but gone away from his body. Principal Huggins, however, could see the despair in Lincoln's eyes. The steadily growing stream of tears was all the evidence he needed.
-Meanwhile, in another part of town, fifteen minutes earlier-
A woman with blonde hair was busy cleaning off her dentist's chair and getting ready for her next appointment as she looked at the clock and saw it was close to eleven A.M.. "Hmmm. That's odd. Nancy is never really late for work" she muttered softly as she looked out the window and saw numerous police cars, a firetruck and an ambulance rush by on the road.
Before Rita could say anything else she felt her phone vibrate grabbing it she noticed she got a notification from her newsfeed app.
[Traffic Accident In Royal Woods. Three People Dead.]
Rita suddenly felt a sense of dread wash over her when she saw the headline. She was not a superstitious woman, but after the amount of time she spent observing two of her children, she couldn't help but believe her good friend's unusual tardiness and the passing of emergency vehicles was some sort of bad omen, and that this report was the final answer to this mystery.
'Oh god! Please no!' she thought in a panic as she frantically opened the articles hoping her hunch was wrong. Right away, she discovered it was not.
[Royal Woods Police have identified the victims of a deadly traffic accident, involving the intoxicated driver of an 18-wheeler: 35 year old Nancy Wilkes, 47 year old Thomas Wilkes, and 15 year old Linka Wilkes.
According to eye-witnesses, the victims were crossing the intersection of Main and Heidt Street when 60-year-old John Burgh T-boned the minivan the Wilkes family were traveling in, likely on the way to Royal Woods High School.
When first responders arrived on the scene, the family of three were found dead…]
Rita froze it seemed that time had stopped for her, quickly putting her phone away in her pocket she quickly ran into her boss's office.
"D-Dr. Feinstein…Dr. Feinstein!" Rita exclaimed in a panic. By the time the dentist came over, the woman was leaning on the counter for support, sobbing quietly.
"Oh my! Did something happen?" he asked in a worried tone.
"Nancy…Nancy is…" Rita could not finish her sentence, so instead, she handed him her phone with the artist in view. After a moment of reading what it said, he groaned mournfully, resting his head in his free hand. Like Rita, Nancy was one of his most valued assistants, and he knew the two were close.
"Oh god…" He whispered. Barely holding back his own tears, he looked up to see Rita sobbing heavily.
"Listen Rita…why don't you take the rest of the day off?" he began, before looking back at the phone.
"...T…Thank you doctor" she spoke sadly as she gathered her things and left the building and quickly headed for her car.
Just as she got in and started her car, Dr. Feinstein came to the door. Curious, Rita let down the window. "Doctor?"
"Good. I caught you," he began before holding her phone, "First off, you almost left this behind. Second, I just remember. It was only Nancy, her husband, and their daughter mentioned in that article. I distinctly remember that she also has a son."
Rita's eyes shot open. That's right! Nancy did have a son; one she knew quite well.
"Thanks for reminding me, Doctor," Rita replied, before letting tears fall once again. "Oh, Lincoln…"
-Meanwhile back with Lincoln-
Lincoln was sitting in the principal's office, listening to Principal Huggins speaking with the police over the phone about the incident.
"Yes, Officer, he's right here in the office with me…..I see…..yes, Officer….Alright. Thank you," he said, hanging up the phone and sighing as he turned to Lincoln and got down on one knee.
"...Lincoln, listen. The police…are on their way to take you to the station. You'll be staying there until they can find an orphanage for you" he explained as Lincoln barely nodded. Minutes ago, his mind caught up to him after the news was dropped, and he broke down, crying uncontrollably while Cheryl held him, along with Principal Huggings, until he had to remove himself to attend to the proceedings.
Principal Huggins stood up and sighed. He had no idea what he could do to help Lincoln but figured this was the only solution.
"I'm sorry, Lincoln…I truly am," he told the boy as the Lunch bell rang signifying the end of the school's first period. Lincoln reached down, grabbed his backpack and made his way to the cafeteria; all while the principal and his assistant looked at the boys retreating form.
-Royal Woods High School, 15 Minutes after the accident-
Luke Loud was in the boys bathroom puffing a cigarette and scrolling through his phone reading a text sent to him by his girlfriend, Linka Wilkes, which read: "Be there soon, babe. Had to drop off Lincoln XOXOXO"-Linka.
That text was sent to him half an hour ago, and Linka still hadn't shown up. She was one of the few students in school with a perfect attendance record, and she was a hard-working student. Honestly, he didn't know what made her decide to date both him and his twin sister.
"Dammit! Where is she?" he grumbled while grinding the cigarette against the wall, putting it out in the process. "Wonder if Luna knows," he said as he was about to text his twin only to get a frantic text from her. Raising an eyebrow Luke clicked on the massage and what he saw caused his heart to nearly stop.
'BRO! LINKA AND HER PARENTS WERE IN AN ACCIDENT! MEET ME IN THE GYM ASAP!' Luna's text read.
Feeling his heart race, partly in fear, but partly in anger thinking this was some sort of joke, Luke made a mad dash out of the bathroom and across campus towards the gym.
When he got there, he found his twin sitting on the bleachers, looking extremely pale, but he was too frantic to notice.
"Dammit, Sis!" He shouted, "This better not some stupid ass prank Luan or Lane put you up to!"
Hearing this made Luna glare at him. "A Prank!? You asswipe! Does this sound like a prank to you!?...Look bro, Mom texted me…like she told me, Linka and her parents were in a car accident…she...she's gone." Luna spoke covering her face as Luke dropped to his knees.
'No…no no no! This has to be a prank Luna! Tell me! It's all just some sick joke! Right?!" he begged as Luna looked away as Luke shut his eyes trying hard not to cry, gritting his teeth, and clenching his fists and he quickly stood up and grabbed Luna by her shirt. 'TELL ME THIS IS SOME SICK FUCKING JOKE!"
Before Luna could say anything more, both were shocked by Loki showing up. He placing his hand on Luke's shoulder.
"...Luke…it's not a joke. The proof is right here," he spoke sadly. He pulled out his phone, showing an article about the incident, the same one their mother saw, minutes ago.
"...No…This…this can't be real," Luke let go of Luna, who in turn wrapped her arms around him. She was just as devastated as her twin. The rocker twins held each other close.
"Come here, you two," Loki said, hugging the two close and gently kissing their foreheads. "It'll be okay…I promise," he whispered while gently rubbing his brother and sister's backs just as Lori, Leni, Loni, Luan, and Lane all walked in.
"Loki!...Is it…is it true?" Leni asked as she and Loni were trying not to cry as well.
"...Yeah guys. It's true," he sighed, all while Luke sobbed into his chest.
Leni broke down into tears the moment he said that. Leni was already a kind girl who wore her emotions on her sleeve, but Linka was one of the few people in her life, outside of her family, that treated her with kindness.
The rest of the siblings present started to cry and comfort each other as well. This loss was one all of them would feel for a long time.
"...Guys…W-what about Lincoln?...What's he gonna do now?' Loni asked, wiping his eyes as the Loud siblings all froze…They had completely forgotten about Linka's younger brother. His parents, and his sister are gone now. He would be left all alone.
"...I …I don't know, but…I'm sure the state has plans for him," Lori spoke, though she didn't exactly like the thought of that happening, herself.
"What, so he's basically going to be gone from our lives, too?" Luan quipped, voicing her oldest sister's own internal feelings.
"I…guess so," Lori replied,
"NO!..." Luna shouted, making them jump. "...We lost Linka…we can't lose Lincoln too!"
"I know it's hard, Luna, but we don't have a choice here," she argued back before sighing, "Look, Mom's on her way to pick us up. We don't have to worry about class since we told our teachers what happened on the way. We…just have to be strong, right now."
Luna, nor her twin, liked the thought of that, though they were sure Lori didn't either. But…what could they do?
*Royal Woods Elementary-with Lincoln*
Lincoln was sitting alone in the empty front courtyard where the parents often came to pick up their kids. He decided to skip lunch and just wanted to be alone.
'...Mom…Dad…Linka…' he thought sadly, holding his backpack up to his chin and crying into it.
A familiar voice called out to him "Linc?" It was Clyde, no doubt checking on him. "Hey buddy?"
"C-Clyde…" He whimpered.
His long-time friend sat next to him and put his hand on his shoulder. "Mrs. Johnson gave us all the news a few minutes ago. I tried to find you as soon as I could. I'm so sorry."
Lincoln didn't say anything, for he was too lost, emotionally, at the moment. Clyde gave him as much time as he could to let him grieve. But eventually, he would want to know what would happen to his best friend.
"...Clyde?" the boy heard from behind him as he turned around and saw that Lucy and Lars had walked out the building. "...Principal Huggins wanted us to tell you your fathers are here to pick you up" Lucy spoke as Lars held her hand tight. "Yes Indeed" the goth boy spoke softly.
Hearing this made Clyde give a sigh before he gained an Idea. 'Lincoln…you…you wanna stay the night with me and My dads?" he asked as for the first time that day Lincoln gave a small but still noticeable smile.
"...Yeah…I'd like that" he spoke softly as Clyde looked over to the Goth twins, granted he wasn't exactly friends with Lucy and Lars but he never really saw them as creepy like everyone else did. "How about you two? You're welcome to come too," he offered as they shook their heads.
'Thanks Clyde, but we can't. Mother and Father are planning to go away tomorrow night and Loki is in charge," Lars explained.
"..Alright, I understand.." he said as he held his hand out for Lincoln to grab and helped him up. "Come on Lincoln. My dads are waiting for us," he smiled as Lincoln walked ahead of him. But before Clyde could follow, Lucy grabbed his arm. "Wait… Clyde, please…help us help Lincoln," she softly pleaded to him.
"...I promise," Clyde told her with a smile, "We'll help him get through this."
-Principal's Office-
Lincoln and Clyde had made their way back to the Principal's office where Harold and Howard McBride were waiting for them.
"Hello Lincoln," Howard spoke sweetly.
"...Hello Mr. McBride," Lincoln responded.
"Lincoln, Howard and I heard everything. We're so sorry. If you need anything, we'll be here for you," Harold told him as Howard gave a nod.
"That's right Lincoln. Don't be afraid to ask," he spoke as the school's final bell rang.
"Well that's our cue. Come on, Lincoln, let's get to the car," Clyde said as he took Lincoln's hand and led him out the office with his dads following close behind.
*Much Later*
Rita had just picked up the younger kids, while her husband picked up the older kids. The kids younger than the goth twins were processing what said twins told them; and up until now, the ride was silent. Finally, Lexx spoke up.
"Mom, Lars and Lucy told us something bad happened to Linky," he asked, quite sad that something bad might have happened to one of his favorite playmates.
"...Well sweetie...you see, his parents and sister were in a bad car accident and…they didn't survive," Rita explained as she heard the quadruplets all gasp in shock.
"You mean that…?" Lana stammered as she saw her mother slowly nod in sadness.
All of the children, including the genius twins, Lisa and Levi, hung their heads down. They were all smart kids, so they knew what that meant.
"What about Linky?" Lola asked, "Was he in the accident, too?"
"No Lola, Lincoln's okay. But right now, he's staying with the McBride's house for the time being until the state can find him a foster home," Rita explained as the younger Louds all had disappointed faces.
"That stinks!" Leif shouted.
"Yeah! Lincoln doesn't deserve to be in a foster home!" Lana exclaimed, crossing her arms.
"No, he doesn't," their mother agreed, but added, "but unless the McBrides can adopt him, that's what would have to happen."
"At least he wouldn't have to live on the streets," Levi mused. As much as he didn't like the idea of his older friend staying in an orphanage, he was aware that kids in other parts of the world didn't have that luxury.
"Hmm...perhaps Levi and I could build a time machine, to prevent the accident from happening," Lisa suggested.
The mother of twenty sighed, "Lisa, I appreciate the thought, but you know you're forbidden from tampering with the fabric of time and space."
The genius girl pouted and crossed her arms, "How could I have known a simple attempt to prevent your vase from getting broken would cause so many changes?"
"Space-time is mysterious like that," Rita stated as if she was an expert. It just so happened that the last time Lisa and Levi attempted to change the past, their actions nearly caused her marriage with Lynn to be ruined, erasing all of her kids from existence. "...Which is why you are no longer allowed to experiment with it. Lisa, honey, I know you mean well, but this is something we'll have to let run its course."
"Mom, isn't there anything we can do to help him?" Lana asked as Rita gave a thought before smiling. "I know. When we get home, why don't we all make Lincoln a care package? That way, he'll know how much we love him and will miss him when he finds a new home," she suggested.
The kids all perked up after hearing that.
"That's a great Idea!" Lola smiled happily.
"Yeah, Lana and I can fill the box with some of my favorite mud balls!" said Leif. His twin brother scoffed.
"Leif, nobody wants any of your filthy mud balls," he jeered, "What Lincoln deserves is the finest crown money can buy."
"You mean that cheap toy crown you got from the thrift store a year ago," Lana teased.
"GAAAAAAAASP!...HOW DARE YOU!?" Lexx exclaimed as Lola had to hold him back from attacking Lana, all while Rita groaned and rolled her eyes. 'Just five more minutes till your home, Rita. Just five more minutes!' she thought in annoyance.
"Besides, you baboons weren't there when we played Castle with Linky," Lola added, when her counterpart finally calmed down, "He looked so dashing wearing that crown and armor he and Linka made."
"I actually agree," Lucy spoke up for the first time since they all got it, making Lola shriek. "Ahh! I forgot you're here!"
"Sigh. Of course you did," she moaned before smiling and pulling out a picture from her backpack. "But yes, I have this as a memento."
It was a photo of Lincoln from that playdate with Lexx and Lola, dressed in cardboard armor, cut and painted to look gold, with patterns drawn on it to give it an ornate design. On top of his head was the toy crown Lexx was likely talking about. He was holding a toy sword while striking a regal pose.
"Yes..Lincoln certainly was…handsome in that armor" Lars spoke, a faint red blush appearing on his cheeks as Lexx and Lola snickered at him.
"Ooooo~ I think Lars likes him~" Lola teased.
"And you don't?" Lars countered. It worked, for a slightly deeper blush appeared on Lola's own face.
"Now kids, no more teasing. We've made it home. So get your siblings together in the living room, and we'll discuss what to add to Lincoln's care package," Rita spoke, pulling up into the driveway of their home. Although, she was admittedly happy that the tone of their conversation shifted to something much more pleasant. And she gave a soft giggle to herself, knowing she would now have to fight the urge to tease her kids about the shared crush they had on the boy.
*Later that evening with the Mcbrides*
Clyde, his fathers, and Lincoln were at the dinner table having a meal consisting of meatloaf and garlic bread.
"Mmmm! This meatloaf is delicious, Dad!" Clyde smiled as he ate a piece of the food.
"Thank you, sweetie!" Howard smiled until he noticed Lincoln hadn't touched a single piece of food on his plate.
"Lincoln? Aren't you hungry?" he asked as Lincoln sighed and shook his head "No…may I be excused?" he asked quietly.
"Sure, but you really should eat something," Harold spoke as Lincoln left the dinner table and headed upstairs to the guest bedroom.
Seeing his retreating form made the Mcbrides worried about him. "Dads? I was wondering. Would it be possible for you to adopt Lincoln? He needs a family and I'm worried the state might place him in a terrible place," Clyde spoke as both of his fathers looked at each other, and then at him, with downtrodden looks. "..Clyde, sweetie, your father and I have talked about it but…we're unable to adopt Lincoln," Howard spoke.
"What? Why not? You adopted me, so why can't you adopt him too?" Clyde protested.
"Son, please calm down," Harold began, "Listen, we would like nothing more than to take him in. We know just how close the two of you are. But with me losing my job at the welfare office, and the mayor increasing the Tax rates to 6.5% at the moment, we can't do it, Not until we're more financially stable," he said, Clyde shocking. He didn't want to potentially lose his best friend, but he also understood what his fathers were telling him. "So….that's it? Tomorrow, I'm losing my best friend?' he asked with his voice breaking as he tried so hard not to cry, but before Harold could say anything to comfort his son Howard placed a hand on his shoulder.
'Harold…I just got a text from Rita…"
-Back with the Louds-
All twenty Loud children were in the Living room arguing about things Lincoln would like.
"I'm telling you! Lincoln needs a basketball! What if his new family wants to see how well he shoots hoops?" Lynnard (or Boy Lynn, as his family and friends call him) exclaimed, twirling a basketball on his finger, before his twin, Lynnette (or Girl Lynn).
"Oh, please. What Lincoln needs is stimulating math books and a few geography books as well!" Lisa huffed, crossing her arms.
"Boooring!" Leif taunted, "Lincoln is a cool guy! What he needs is a cool pet to play with. Hey Lana, do you think you and Hops could help me catch a froggy buddy from him?"
"Bruh, there's no way they would let him keep a little froggy dude," Luna argued, "Music is always good for the soul, so a rad guitar is just what the little man needs, right bro?"
Luke, however, was silently thinking to himself. He was like that for the past hour or so.
"What Linky needs is a scarf to keep him warm in the winter! Look! Leni and I made him this totes cute scarf and hat combo!" Loni smiled as he and Leni showed off an orange scarf and knit wool cap they made for Lincoln.
Lori just gave them a blank look, "Guys…it's the middle of April…"
"Yeah! But that doesn't mean it WON'T get cold Lori!" Leni reasoned as Loki and Lori both sighed.
"Lincoln needs some good laughter. That's why Lane and I made a book filled with some of our best material!" Luan smiled. 'Yeah! It's a real…page turner!" Lane quipped as all of them (yes even Luan, because even she thought that was bad) groaned.
"Oh wow, a book filled with boring stuff," Lucy snarked.
Lane raised a brow, "You're one to talk, Spooky."
Before Lucy could retort, she heard the sounds of grunting and saw Lily and Leon trying to push their toy box over to them.
"Awww!" Lola cooed, "Do you two want to give Lincoln your toys?"
"Wincan!" Lily shouted, smiling and pointed to the tox box, in effect saying 'yes'.
"Awwwww! As sweet as that is you two but you can't give Lincoln all of your toys because they can't all fit in the box" Lori said going over and picking them up just as their parents walked in with disappointed looks.
'...Kids, your father and I…have some news…I don't know if it's good, but it's not bad. The state found Lincoln a potential family to adopt him, but…they don't allow care packages to be delivered," Rita sighed knowing how upset this would make them.
"THEY WHAT!?" The siblings all exclaimed.
"Apparently the family he's being sent to are incredibly paranoid and refuse any mail that isn't delivered by a certain mail chain," Lynn sr explained all while Lisa and Levi began to think.
"Hmmm, suspicious. I suppose there are people who require certain mail chains to deliver to them, but…" Levi explained.
"SCREW THAT!" Luke shouted. All eyes were now on him. "There's no way in hell we can sit by and let a couple of bozos keep us from doing something special for our bro…"
"Yeah! Luke's right, who cares if they don't allow it? I say we give it to Linky anyway!" Loni exclaimed as they all began to agree with that statement.
"I'll be honest, dear," Rita said, looking at her husband, "I'm a little worried about what kind of people this pair is, if something simple like a care package isn't allowed, then what other kinds of rules would they make for him?"
"But Rita, what else can we do? The state officials told us this was the only family willing to take him," Lynn Sr said, "I'm sorry, kids, but this is out of our hands. There's nothing we can do," their father spoke as the Loud kids all gained sad looks, including Luke who pulled out his phone and stared at his screensaver which was a picture of him, Luna, and Linka. Seeing the face of his now deceased girlfriend made Luke shed a few tears as he tightened his hand into a fist and decided to make a bold statement.
"...Then we'll take him!" he spoke simply as that all turned to him.
"What? Bro, are you serious?' Luna asked as her twin looked at her. "As serious as Big Time Rush when they made that shitty movie of theirs! We can take Lincoln! And we can be his new family!" Luke stated.
Lynn Sr felt a headache coming on, "Luke…Your heart's in the right place, I know. But there's no way your mother and I can adopt."
"Sure there is, Pops," Luke countered, "You both have a clean record, we're not strapped for cash at all since half of us have steady jobs. Hell, even the quads manage to bring in some money!" He paused for a moment before looking at the quartet of Lana, Leif, Lexx, and Lola, "…What DO you guys do for cash?"
"Don't ask any questions you're ready for the answers to," the four answered together, in an eerie monotype voice. The room fell silent with everyone staring at them, until Lucy simply said in an impressed tone, "Wicked."
When he got his bearings back, Lynn Sr thought about what his son said. He knew he was right, but even with them being one of the few financially stable families in Royal Woods, despite their size (at least to his knowledge), he was still unsure about the idea.
"Luke…Look, I know you want Lincoln to find a family but…we're just not the right one for him. He's better off with the family that wants to adopt him now" he explained as Luke grit his teeth in rage.
"That's a load of bullshit and you know it, old man!" he snapped.
"Watch your language, young man!" Rita scolded as Luke ignored her.
"NO! I don't believe this! You're willing to let Lincoln be with some strange randos who are afraid of the mailman!? WE'RE the best thing for him! WE know him, and HE knows us! HE'S PRACTICALLY FAMILY ALREADY! HIS PARENTS WERE FAMILY ... .HIS…..his sister…she….she was family" Luke spoke, dropping to his knees and crying his eyes out. "...Mom…Dad…..please ... .he's lost too much already...we lost too much…we…I can't lose him too!" he sobbed slightly.
"Mother. Father," Lisa spoke up, trying to get some clarity in the middle of the chaotic scene, "You apparently know who wants to adopt Lincoln. Do you know them?"
"Well, we know their names, at least," the father admitted, "Their names are, if I remember correctly, Jeff and Carly Miller. Why?"
The girl turned and nodded to her twin, "Just a moment, Father."
The two prodigies made their way to the computer in the room, and made a quick search on the Miller's.
"Strange. Their names should show up in a regular search, within the public directory, but there is nothing found. Hmm…" Lisa typed some more, encrypting the computer, before opening up the deep web search, tapping into a more advanced search engine; one the government would use. The results were a little alarming.
[CLASSIFIED]
"Mother. Father. If I may," Levi announced, "no individual should have that sort of results after an advanced search, let alone a simple one."
This was enough to give both parents pause, and after a moment, Lynn Sr. pulled out his phone to make a call. "Hello, Royal Woods Police? Listen, we spoke earlier regarding the potential adoption of Lincoln Wilkes…Yes, I'd like to request a search on his potential foster parents, Jeff and Carly Miller…One hour? That'll be fine…Yes, I'll listen out for you…Thank you."
Lynn Sr. sighed, "Alright. We'll wait for now and see what the police say."
Luke, along with his siblings, nodded.
"...So does this mean? Lief asked only for Lynn Sr to pat his head. 'No, Sport, it doesn't mean we'll be adopting Lincoln. We just need to hope that the police can find out something; but for all we know, it might be days, weeks, months or even years before we even hear from…" Lynn sr was cut off by his phone ringing. He looked at the caller ID and saw it was from the police department, "...them!"
"Oh, wow! That was fast," Leni remarked.
"Hello? …Yes, speaking…Okay…WHAT?...Oh, so…I see. What will happen to Lincoln's adoption…Okay, good…I hope it turns out well. Thank you for letting me know…Oh! Thank you, Officer. Have a good night."
His family stared at him in anticipation.
"Well, that was the police department. Their search on the Millers turned up some interesting results," Lynn began"
"Like what dad?" Lars asked as his father sighed. 'Well, apparently…they were fruit terrorists.." he spoke uneasily.
"...I'm sorry what?' Loki said not believing he heard right.
"That threw me for a loop as well, but yes, they're part of an organization called S.U.S.P.E.N.C.E. Not sure what that means, but the FBI is tracking them down, since their goal is to destroy all of Michigan's cherry crops.
"That sounds dumb" Lexx remarked. All of his siblings nodded in agreement.
'Dumb? Yes. But, it's apparently true," Lynn Sr said, not knowing how to process everything he was told by the police.
"The important part is, now that they've been found out, regardless of whether or not the Feds apprehend them, their adoption bid is immediately revoked."
The kids sighed in relief, but Luke wasn't done yet. "Pops, I'm sorry for shouting earlier, but I really mean it when I say that we should adopt Lincoln. After everything that's happened by now, the little guy could really use some good news."
The man had to admit, at this point, so much craziness happened in such a short time - and no doubt, Lincoln was probably told about some of it - maybe…
"...Rita? What do you think?' he asked his wife who simply gave a smile.
"Honestly? Lynn…I think it's a good idea now. Nancy was a good friend to me for many years, even back during our highschool days, so…I do think we should take Lincoln. I feel like I owe it to Nancy," Rita smiled.
The family patriarch nodded, "Do you kids agree?"
"Yeah!" The kids cheered, except…
"No." This came from the oldest twins. The rocker twins glared at them, practically feeling betrayed.
"What are you two knob-knockers going on about?" Luke demanded breaking into his faux British accent.
"Look, while I agree Lincoln does need a good home, it can't be with us he needs a real family. Not a family full of freaks!" Loki spoke as Lori nodded in agreement.
"Loki's right. I say we wait for the state to find a better family than those Miller weirdos," she said.
Both parents face-palmed. They had completely forgotten about their…family activities.
"Lori, Loki! Never use that word in this house again! Sigh...you two do make a good point, but so does Luke," Rita spoke, placing her hands on her hips disappointed in her eldest children.
"But Mom, say we do adopt Lincoln. Do you really think he'll be accepting of…well, you know?" Loki asked as Lynn Sr sighed. 'I understand what you two are saying, but at this point, it might be for the best if we take this chance…so for the time being, and until he's ready to accept our way of living, we'll have to put our family funtime on pause for awhile," he said.
That statement actually made the kids, save for the oldest pair, pause. The only thing going through the kids' minds now was: 'This might be a long wait'.
'Okay...now then. Kids, go wash up for dinner," Lynn sr spoke as he shooed his kids upstairs all while Rita gave a sigh. 'Ugh…this gave me a headache…" she muttered before seeing Lucy and Lars head up the stairs.
"...Lucy?...Would you and Lars come down here and help Mommy de-stress?' she smiled as they both blushed slightly.
"Really, honey? Right now?" Lynn looked at his wife with a raised brow.
"I know, dear, I know," Rita waved him off a little, "but if we're going to be holding off while Lincoln's here, I need to get one last session in beforehand."
"Alright," the husband sighed, "Just…make sure to record this one for me." With a grin and a wink, he went off toward the kitchen.
Looks like the secrets out!
