His mother stood in his front door.

That would not typically count towards something out of the ordinary, worrying perhaps but not strange. Not unusual. Maybe she'd left something and had come back for it? Maybe she had learnt some dire news he needed to know?

Except his mother stood in his front door.

It wasn't even a front door anymore, but rather just another hole in his house that needed fixing. But it hadn't just fallen off its hinges, it had been broken down by a horde and writhing tentacles that had practically gutted Weiss in front of him. They dripped with the dark blood that had spilled from the vampire like water gushing into a ravine from a waterfall.

The tentacles were still there, swaying in an agitated fashion. His mother stared at him with an angry, worried, relieved look, and Jaune wondered if he was even looking at his mother.

What if it was some alien replacement? What if she was going to replace him now? What if she had saved him from Weiss only to kill him herself?

Was it even a her? Did these things have gender? Did they have feelings? It looked like they did, but could they? He knew better than some how easy it was for people to fake emotions. To create a façade that fell as easily as it was built.

Things were going well in Jaune's eyes. The night was young but he'd already had a lot of fun. Ren was chilling in the corner like the cool dude he was, a cup of juice in hand. Jaune was silent for once, knowing his more introverted friend could use the relative peace and not-so quiet as the school's auditorium remained full of students who were eagerly celebrating the end of the school year. It had been exceptionally tough due to a string of disappearances, hence the party to make everyone feel less depressed.

It seemed to be working, but Jaune could see a group of blank-faced kids just watching the festivities unfold. They were the ones who actually knew those who had disappeared, those who had yet to be found and who were missing out on a disco that wouldn't have happened if they hadn't been suddenly taken from the world without a trace.

At this point they were dead. Jaune remembered his dad talking about it before his mom told him to shut up.

Even if the disappearances made him feel sombre and sad, Jaune was happy. Pyrrha was somewhere around, and had promised him a dance. They were only young, but the way his stomach turned to butterflies when he was around made him absolutely certain they were going to end up like his mom and dad were. He was so certain he'd asked his dad for the stork's phone number, though he'd been denied it every time for now and told he would have to wait until he grew up for that, which annoyed Jaune to no end. He already knew about puberty for crying out loud!

The thought of what he'd learned about puberty made Jaune shiver with disgust. It would be cool to have a beard like dad did, but it wouldn't be cool to have hair growing form literally everywhere. Even his armpits!

"Did you hear the news?" Ren asked suddenly, and Jaune turned to his friend, who looked uncomfortable under the flashing lights of the disco ball in the centre of the room. "Apparently we'll be having more Sex Ed stuff soon."

"Sex Ed?" Jaune blinked. "Who's that?"

"More like what's that." Ren corrected. "Some sort of lesson, I don't really know. I heard the teachers complaining about it."

"When?" Jaune asked, curious as to how long his friend had been sitting on the secret. It didn't seem like a major thing, if anything the thought of yet another class made him shiver, but Ren was never the type for keeping secrets from Jaune or Pyrrha.

"Earlier." Ren answered, eyes widening as Jaune turned away to look over the sea of people in search of Pyrrha. She had gone off to talk to a friend at some point, she was always more popular than him or Ren, and he had wondered whether she knew the secret Ren had just told him too. "A-Also have you heard-?"

Ren's words dissipated into nothingness when Jaune finally found Pyrrha, smack dab in the middle of the crowd of people. She was dancing with someone, and he realised with a start that it was Cardin of all people. Cardin and Pyrrha got on about as well as cats and dogs did, which made him all the more confused as to why they were dancing, let alone why they were so close.

When they kissed Jaune blinked. His entire body turned cold, as if ice had been poured down him from all over and from everywhere. He blinked again, thinking he'd imagined the horrible image, but it was still there. They were still there.

There was no words to describe the coldness he felt. His hands trembled with shock and a burning anger that almost scared him with how utterly bright it was. They parted as quickly as they had come together, and they parted. His eyes never left Pyrrha as she wandered through the crowd, and he realised with a jolt that she was looking for him.

Then her emerald eyes met his and she smiled, only to freeze. The eyes that once brought him comfort to see, the eyes he would desperately search for whenever entering class or waiting at the gates after school, the eyes of his bestest friend and the eyes of the girl who'd taken his heart, eyes that had once made him feel butterflies, only just made him feel sick.

Her lips moved, forming his name, and Jaune found himself broken from his sickness and his trance as he turned and ran away as fast as he could.

/#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/ /#/

"Jaune?"

The lips moved again, forming his name and uttering it and once again Jaune was broken from the trance he had been left in. It was a different time. A different place, but the sting of the coldness that turned his spine to ice did nothing to dilute the pain from the fact he was again being betrayed by someone he had loved and trusted.

This was worse than Pyrrha. This was his mom. This was the woman who had birthed him, the woman who had loved him, raised him, nurtured him. How much of that had actually been his mom, and how much had it been this?

Had he just been raised like a lamb for the slaughter, fattened and made plump so that when he was finally eaten it tasted all the more better?

It took a step forward, worry marring it's face in a way that felt painfully real. But Jaune couldn't trust it.

He couldn't trust Pyrrha. He couldn't trust his mom. He certainly couldn't trust it.

He was starting to feel like he couldn't trust anyone.

It took another step forward, and before it could grab him he turned and bolted, startling it. It called his name, but Jaune ignored it, racing into the back garden and into the overgrown grass and bushes until he reached a dilapidated fence.

For the second time in his life he ran as his world crumbled around him. It might have been a trick of his imagination, but Jaune swore he could feel it breathing down his neck, so he vaulted the fence without hesitation and managed to reach a main road. He followed it down until he reached a park, and he raced across an open field and into a small patch of woodland located on the far end of the park where he hoped he could lose it, where he hoped it wouldn't find him.

What the hell was happening to him? Why was all this happening to him? He found himself keeling over and panting in between choked sobs as tears seamlessly flowed from his eyes. He hunched over as his breath tightened and he fell deeper into hysteria. Last time he had been found by his father and taken home where his parents and siblings had comforted and calmed him.

Now he was alone and surrounded by trees and he had no-one he could trust. No-one to bring him back from the utter mess he was descending into.

There were no anchors to keep him moored, no rocks to cling to and no...no anything.

He was completely, utterly alone.

When Blake stepped outside she felt utterly numb.

Despite Jaune's attempts to calm her fears, just looking at the smug look on the leech's face as Blake bowed down to his demands and exited their home made her roil with rage. Her tentacles seeped out from underneath her clothes, coiling angrily and uselessly in the air. It the thing, the sun, had declined into the horizon and cast the sky in orange, though for some reason all Blake could think of was the crimson colour of blood as she stared at the sky.

What was she doing? Why was she just allowing Jaune to get hurt?

She was scared of angering him, of driving him away, but she feared losing him due to the actions of another far more than she feared losing him due to her own behaviour.

Her body felt weak and and she shook, and she realised it was because she was still scared of the sun. It was not as hot now, not as bright, but it remained in the sky, gradually sinking. She could feel the low simmer of its heat, and she could feel the uncomfortable tingling in her tentacles from the light, the brightness, the warmth.

"Blake dear?" A soft voice called out, and Blake was startled to realise Missus Arc was at the bottom of the garden's path. "What are you doing outside?"

Before Blake could so much as answer or ask why Missus Arc was there, the woman's eyes darkened and she surged forward with a speed that made Blake stumble to the side and away from her. She saw a writhing mass of black tentacles burst from Missus Arc's back and her word rumbled out of Missus Arc menacingly.

"Over my dead body you insidious leech!"

There was a piercing shriek before something was sent hurtling from the house. The body thumped against the concrete road outside and Blake saw Weiss struggle to her feet as black blood spilled down her clothes, staining it an inky colour.

"You are lucky your mother is who she is leech otherwise I would have torn you to shreds and tossed you into a vat of garlic. Now begone! You a forbidden from the abode of Jaune Arc from now until the end of time itself!"

Weiss fled with a cry of both pain and frustration, and Blake watched silently because she had no idea what else to do.

Missus Arc was like her. She had her tentacles. The ones flickering behind Missus Arc were larger and more numerous than Blake's, and she felt a mixture of envy and cautiousness as Missus Arc spun around and started yelling at Jaune. Blake moved as if she would help, but she fond any words she wished to say clogged in her throat as she numbly stared at Missus Arc, a strange feeling swirling inside her when she realised she may not be the only being like herself.

"Jaune? Jaune!"

Missus Arc ran inside the house, and Blake followed, worry rising as she heard the back door slam shut with a force that suggested Jaune had put all his strength and more in shutting it. They followed him outside, but Missus Arc froze as he disappeared in the shrubbery at the far end of the garden. Blake made to follow, but Missus Arc stopped her with a single human arm and three thick tentacles that blocked her path.

"Do you have his scent?" Missus Arc asked quietly, and Blake blinked before nodding tentatively. "I thought so. You can smell even better since you chose to be Faunus. He needs time, for a little bit at least. You should follow him down and make sure he is well in a few minutes. I take it you may have some questions?"

Blake nodded.

"Then I shall answer some. Let's head inside. I fear the neighbours will be awake after my not-so subtle expulsion of Weiss Schnee."

"You said you know her mother?" Blake blurted out as they headed towards the house. "How?"

"Most supernaturals know of other supernaturals due to our longevity but also depending on how powerful a supernatural is." Missus Arc explained, pausing at the back door. "Willow Schnee is one of the most powerful vampire Matriarchs ever known, and she has outlived dozens of even the most powerful supernatural being. Go to Jaune. If I go...You should go now. He might not need time. He might need someone."

Blake nodded hesitatingly, slowly moving away and waiting to see if Missus Arc changed her mind again. When she didn't after a few moments Blake turned and hurried off, and she heard the back door open and shut behind her.

Jaune's scent, made all the stronger by tears that made her stomach wibble and wobble with worry, brought her to an open field with metal structures inside a concrete area and a woodland on the far side of the field. The trail of Jaune's scent led her towards it, and when she got close enough it was the sound of echoing sobs that caught in her ears that guided her the rest of the way to Jaune.

Her heart immediately clenched at the sight of him tucked away as far as he could inside a hollowed out tree truck, curled up as close as he could and trying to shelter himself inside it, as if he could hide himself from the pain he was feelings he did. His cheeks were wet with tears that continued to roll down with frightening ease and his pained, desperate sobs were embedded in her brain from how utterly soul-destroying they sounded. Without thinking she rushed forward and wrapped her arms and tentacles around him, holding him tightly and trying to comfort him.

His sobs paused for a moment, and he looked at her with something that resembled fear before it turned to shock.

"B-B-Blake?" Jaune sobbed questioningly, and she answered by nuzzling against his head. "-W-W-Why are y-you here?"

"Because you are my friend." Blake answered, feeling something resembling hope as he started to relax in her hold. "You are my everything. You feed me. You shelter me. You protect me. You make me laugh."

"I-I thought I was a-alone." Jaune whispered quietly, voice hoarse from the violent sobbing. She nuzzled against him harder.

"You are mine, I will never leave you. You will always have me." Blake swore, trembling slightly as she realised just how honest she was being. "Always."

Jaune said nothing for a while, but eventually he shuffled forward and Blake moved to let him out of the tree he'd tucked himself away in. She hovered hesitatingly, not sure of whether he'd want her to hug him again, but when he moved forward to embrace her she enveloped him once more, though this time they were standing. It felt a little bit more awkward because of that, but Blake found herself uncaring as she basked in the warmth of Jaune's embrace, even if that happy feeling was tempered by Jaune's despair.

"M-Mom." Jaune said eventualy. "She's l-like y-y-you."

"She is." Blake replied, nuzzling his cheek gently. "I didn't know. I should have told you."

"H-How could you if y-you didn't know?" Jaune retorted, shaking his head against her neck. "None of this makes sense Blake."

"Perhaps it can." Blake offered cautiously, realising he was starting to calm down as he stuttered less. "We could talk to your mother. She was willing to answer a question I had for her. I believe she would be more than willing to do the same for you."

"What if it isn't even mom?" Jaune whispered, breathing starting to hurry again. Blake panicked and held him tightly, patting his back and cooing into his hair to try and sooth him. "W-What if that replaced her? What if...What if...What if...Oh gods!"

He started sobbing again, and he crumpled against her. She held him, heart breaking at the sheer hurt in his voice, and she could feel part of her steadily grow to dislike Missus Arc for the pain she was putting her son through, whether it was intentional or not.

"I am like Missus Arc." Blake offered gently. "I did not replace anyone."

"I don't know what I want Blake." Jaune admitted quietly, calming down more easily this time. "If she is a replacement then my real mom could be dead and I would be loving her killer. If she hasn't been replaced by anything then she's been lying to me my entire life. What am I supposed to do?"

"I don't know." Blake admitted in turn. "But if were talk to her then we can at least know what is going on and why."

"You said you asked her a question already and that she answered right?" Blake nodded in response. "What did you ask?"

"If she knew Weiss' mother due to the comment she made whilst expelling her from our house." Blake replied. "Apparently Willow Schnee is an important, powerful and ancient figure in the supernatural world."

"And we've just attacked and pissed off her daughter for the second time." Jaune sighed, before hiccuping sharply. She let out an amused trill at the sound that earned a small smile from Jaune. "That was a cute. Do you purr too?"

"Purr-?" Blake was cut off as his hands gently brushed against her ears, her Faunus ones, and she found herself melting under his soft touch. This time it was her leaning against him, chest rumbling with content purrs as she felt waves of soothing warmth spread out from her ears and go straight to her brain. Eventually his hands receded, and she gave him a discontent glare.

"We need to talk to my mother remember?" Jaune teased, and she felt a wave of relief as he showed his more normal self. She didn't know what she would have done if he ended up crying like he did before, she didn't think her heart could take it. "Thank you by the way. I have your back too. Always."

Blake smiled at his words and the honesty behind them, and that smile only grew when he took her hand and started leading them through the woods. They walked side by side through the field and she quickly hid her tentacles as a dark shape stumbled nearby. They walked side by side on the streets until they arrived at their home, ready to confront the lion awaiting them in its den.

Jaune's father was with his mother by the time he returned with Blake. He tensed at the sight of them so close, and he wondered if his father was like her too.

"Are you human?" Jaune asked, staring at his father, who stared back. They stared at one another for a few moments, neither backing down, until Nicholas Arc nodded.

"Aye, I'm human." Nicholas said, tugging Juniper closer to him in a one-arm hug. "I always thought we'd raised you better than this Jaune. I never thought you, of all our children, you would run away from the truth and from your own mother."

"Is she even my mother?" Jaune retorted angrily, glaring at Juniper. "Or did you just replace her at some point."

"I..." Juniper let out a choked sob. "I'm your mother Jaune-I promise!"

"Forgive me for not believing you so easily right now." Jaune snapped harshly, and Nicholas stepped forward with anger in his eyes.

"Don't speak to your mother that way." Nicholas warned lowly. "She carried you and your sisters for nine months and loved you from the moment you were concieved. Show some god damn respect."

"Respect is earned, dad." Jaune spat. "So is trust. It isn't something that is just fixed. Your break someone's trust, they don't trust you. You act like a dick, you aren't respected."

"Boy I will swear if you keep running your mouth I'll spank you right here, right now in front of your girlfriend." Nicholas returned, and Jaune didn't back down despite the threat he knew his father would attempt to follow through with. If anything he wanted his father to make the first move, to give him an excuse so you could just punch him and not feel bad about it. His father had known too, even if he was human, and Jaune didn't even truly know if he was human because he couldn't trust his father either.

"Both of you stop!" Juniper pleaded, stepping in between father and son and pushing them away from another. She turned to Jaune. "Honey I swear-I didn't want it to be like this! I...I know it hurts, I know you had a right to know, but people who...people who know about the supernatural end up drawing in the supernatural. It's why you stumbled into Weiss after moving here, because Blake lived here and you knew something out of the ordinary was happening."

"Bullshit." Jaune blurted out, part of him guilty for being so standoffish at the sadness and utter heart-break on his mother's face. If it was his mother that was. "How the hell does knowing about the supernatural draw them to you?"

"Because the reason why humans don't typically know about supernaturals is because of supernaturals." Nicholas interjected, arms folded across his chest and a dark look still on his face, though his tone was more calmer. "Humans outnumber them a million to one, or thereabouts, so they stick to the shadows. Any human who ends up in the know ends up being partially supernatural because of it, because they're more aware of the weirder stuff that happens and the fact there may be a why behind those weird things."

"So because they know, we know, we're supernatural in a sense." Nicholas nodded, and Jaune frowned. "How did you meet mom then?"

"Same as you met Blake. She was in a house I bought and haunted me for a while." Nicholas answered honestly, and Jaune remembered what his mom had said on the phone a few weeks ago when he'd just moved in about his father having similar troubles to what he was experiencing. "Before...Before that though, I was attacked by a werewolf."

"What?" Jaune blurted out, and Nicholas let out a strained laugh.

"Yup, it's a funny story actually." Nicholas smiled, though the smile was more genuine than his laugh. "I ended up being friends with the werewolf afterwards. You know Auntie Summer?"

"Yeah." Jaune nodded, then his jaw dropped when the realisation set in. "No way!"

"Yes way." Nicholas snorted. "That's the reason why Amber can't stand the Roses, because of her dog allergy."

"Gods." Jaune murmured. "Who else is supernatural that we know?"

Juniper and Nicholas shared a glance before Nicholas shrugged. Juniper sighed heavily, turning to Jaune with a look that was a mix of sheepishness and fear.

"Jaune...sweetie..." Juniper paused for breath and breathed in heavily. "There's a fifty-fifty chance offspring between a supernatural and human ends up either way. Fifty percent chance they end up human, fifty percent chance they end up supernatural. There's no in-between, especially for the more powerful supernatural types like myself and Blake."

Jaune turned to Blake, who had been listening along quietly. He blushed when he realised they were still holding hands, and he reluctantly tried removing it due to his parents being there. Blake blinked and tightened her grip though, cocking her head to give him an inquisitive look. Since he didn't want to cause another scene in front of his parents, he give in and squeezed her hand back, and she subsequently relaxed her grip.

"I'm not supernatural. I know that much." Jaune said confidently, looking at Juniper and trying hard to force back the negativity. He had little other choice other than to trust in what they said. Blake didn't know much about the supernatural, and Jaune didn't exactly plan on tracking down Weiss to try and get answers out of her.

Then he remembered how weird Pyrrha and Ren had acted earlier, and he sighed heavily when he realised they were probably in the know too. Hell, probably the entire world except himself did.

"Fifty-fifty per child Jaune." Juniper said quietly, closing her eyes and looking down as if she expected him to lose his head. He blinked again, then the puzzle pieces fell into place and he felt his free hand curl up into a fist.

"Who?" Jaune demanded. "How many of them have been lying to me too?"

"Saphron and Lavender." Nicholas said for his mother, who was trembling in front of him with silent tears. Jaune actually took too steps back, absolutely stunned that the two siblings he could say with absolute certainty he trusted with his life and everything else were the ones who were keeping such a monumental secret from him.

"Why?" Jaune demanded, and there was no hiding the pain in his voice. "Why did you all lie to me?"

"Knowing draws in supernaturals Jaune." Nicholas reiterated, though his face was more sympathetic rather than angry or stern. "Weiss is a good example of why we didn't want you to know. Having me around was a risk, but your mom, Saphron and Lavender are all more than enough to deal with any feral supernatural that might come knocking at the door."

"So...So it was to protect me then?" Jaune asked suspiciosuly, and his mom finally broke down.

"Yes!" Juniper yelled, slamming into him and pulling him into a bear hug. "I swear it was just to protect you! Please baby I never wanted to hurt you like this."

"I know." Jaune whispered hoarsely. "Its just...finding out all this like that..."

"I know." Nicholas said, startling Jaune by stepping in and wrapping his arms around him and his mother. "If Weiss wasn't a Schnee she'd be paste by now."

"What's important about the Schnee?" Jaune asked, and Nicholas shook his head.

"Basically they're the biggest vampire clan in recorded supernatural history, which is fairly limited but still means something." Nicholas answered. "They don't like us Arcs much right now because we have a lot of power. Your mom, your siblings, they're...they're..."

"We come from space Jaune." Juniper whispered into his neck, still squeezing him tightly. Jaune realised with a start her tentacles were embracing him and his father too. "I don't know the specifics, but we aren't your average supernatural. We can do a lot of things, a lot of damage, and the Schnee are fearful of the fact that three of us live in the same roof."

"Are your...alien kind rare or something?" Jaune asked, and Juniper laughed.

"I always knew I need to find or come up with a name, but yes, we're rare even by supernatural standards." Juniper answered. "I think that's why Weiss targeted you, to try and weaken us. You're the most vulnerable Arc right now, and it was too much of an opportunity for even a Schnee to resist."

"June." Nicholas said, in a warning tone that suggested his parents had already talked about this.

"I know better than to declare war on a vampire clan Nicky." Juniper sighed. "Let alone the vampire clan."

"I'm starting to struggle to breathe." Jaune teased, and his parents let him go mercifully. He was tugged over to Blake, who held his hand tightly and wrapped a tentacle around his waist to keep him close. Jaune found himself flustered by the act, as well as the strange but not unpleasant feeling of the tentacle wrapped around his waist. His parents laughed, and for a moment the world seemed like it could make sense.

"Jaune!" Someone called out from the street. "No! We're too late!"

"We need to investigate then." Said a calmer voice that Jaune instantly recognised as it grew closer. "With any luck he might still be alive."

Jaune managed to extricate himself from Blake's grasp using the surprise she felt at the sound of voices. He calmly walked into his hallway, and he stood and stared at the two figures entering through his ruined front door, hands on his hips. The both of them freeze, and they turned to give each other concerned looks.

"Care to share just how much you know about vampires, alien space things, werewolves and all sorts of weird and wacky things that we all know exist?" Jaune asked, smiling sweetly to show just how ticked off he was before blinking when he saw the thick kevlar covering their bodies and the guns in their hands. "Or why the hell you look like a swat team raiding my house?"

"Ahaha! You see..." Pyrrha trailed off, glancing at Ren for help. Her partner just shrugged, and she slumped sadly. "What do you know already?"

"Ask my parents." Jaune shrugged. "My mom's one of those alien space things."

"Ah." Ren said, and Pyrrha blinked. "Well then, you should know more than enough. Ever heard of the Circle?"

"The what?" Jaune asked, and Ren stepped forward and raised his voice.

"Do you know anything about the Circle Mrs Arc?" Ren asked, and his mother stepped into the hallway with a frown, the tentacles behind her swaying uneasily.

"I've heard rumours, none good." Juniper answered, staring at Ren sadly. "To think a sweet boy like you might be part of it. You on the other hand, I can believe would be part of something so monstrous."

Pyrrha winced at the venom directed at her by Jaune's mom, and he was torn between feeling glad or wanting to step in. He had a genuine chance to be friends with Pyrrha again, something he was more than willing to admit he'd missed. She had been his right hand for so long, and if anything it was at least half his fault things had ended up the way they did. He was the one to ask her out after all.

"The Circle has a reputation that was deserved." Ren said calmly. "The keyword there being was. It's changed over the centuries since the witch hunts and peasant mobs."

"I doubt that." Juniper said, just as calmly as she crossed her arms. "What happened to the Branwens if it wasn't your Circle?"

"They joined us." Ren said, speaking quickly as he noticed Juniper moving to protest. "We admit supernaturals these days so long as they agree to follow human laws. Like I said, things change."

"Can someone explain please?" Jaune sighed, holding his head in his hands. "I feel a headache coming from all this back and forth."

"Don't worry, we've got permission to tell you everything." Pyrrha said with a reassuring smile. Jaune felt something behind him and turned to see Blake hovering over his shoulder, giving Pyrrha a fierce glare. "W-We even have permission to take you to our headquarters if you wanted."

"You had a lot of nerve showing your face here girl." Juniper said lowly. "You have a hell of a lot more trying to persuade my son into being a hostage for the Circle to use in case we do something they dislike."

"That isn't our intention Mrs Arc." Ren interjected, turning to Pyrrha. "Search the area for the vampire, I'll fill them in."

Pyrrha nodded reluctantly, and it was clear she was only being sent off because of the bad blood still between them. Jaune gave her an apologetic smile as she left which at least managed to make her perk up a bit and made his mother grit her teeth.

"Well then." Ren sighed. "What would you like to know?"
