Thalassophobia: fear of deep water. Valerie Tomlin is your average teenage girl in the late 80s: nice friend group, nice family. School’s finally out for the summer and Valerie wants this one to be one she’ll never forget. She definitely won’t be forgetting this summer any time soon. What happens this summer will haunt her for the rest of her life…however long that may be.

1. Prologue:

(Because I literally cannot see the Loser's as being 11/12, in this story they'll be 13/14 because that seems so much more realistic to me)

(I also got inspiration for Valerie's name because, and this was something I didn't realise until recently, but all the main characters, aside from Pennywise and Ben, have rhyming names: they all end in an e sound. Billy, Stanley, Eddie, Richie, Beverly, Mikey, even Georgie, Betty and Henry)

THALASSOPHOBIA. The fear of deep water. A fairly common fear for people. But for Valerie Tomlin, it was her worst fear. And this summer would be one to remember. For more reasons than one.

Being the youngest of her friend group, most would regard Valerie as the baby, the one who needed protecting, the softie. It was the polar opposite. Valerie was the youngest physically but the oldest mentally. She was protective over everyone, especially Billy, and she didn't take shit from anyone.

She was the only known person in Derry to not only stand up to Henry Bowers, but also beat the shit out of him to the point where, surprisingly, he was a little scared of her.

She was smart, always knew just what people needed and she was stubborn to a fault. She was daring, always did what other were afraid to do, like jumping off a 50 foot cliff into a quarry. Although, this was just an outer shell, a mask of who she truly was. She was actually quite emotional and kind despite coming across and closed off and private.

So when a clown that comes out of hibernation every 27 years takes something from her and makes Valerie and her friends his new targets, Valerie is prepared to do whatever it takes to protect her friends.

Even if it means losing herself.
