Flameout – Chapter 7

Jane continued in dreamland as Frankie and Frost dealt with Nikki. She was enjoying her dreams of Maura and the children. Jane also thought about children. Her mother had always told her that she needed to get married and give her some grandchildren. Jane had never been sure if she wanted children. She loved Maura's children though and felt as though they were her own. They loved her and she loved them.

Meanwhile right outside her hospital room, Frankie asked one of the Syracuse police officers to "take this woman, Nikki, down to the station and charge her with something, I really don't care what you charge her with, just get her out of my sight and that of my sister's." He then took a moment and thought to himself, 'Was it a crime to impersonate a nurse? Of course, so she could be charged with that. Could they also charge her with trespassing? He didn't know.'

He then continued, "Umm, ya charge her with anything, I don't care." The officer started walking away and Frost spoke up.

"Charge her with impersonating a nurse. We will come down to the station later and file additional paperwork. Thank you." Frost said as the officer turned and left the immediate area with Nikki.

Frankie, also knew that he wanted a restraining order filed against Nikki and while they were at it, one against Stella as well. He didn't want Jane to have to deal with either of those two women. Jane needed to concentrate on getting healed so that she could come back to Boston. That is something he also wanted to know, when could Jane safely return to Boston?

Nikki screamed and hollered as she was hauled out of the hospital in handcuffs. A second officer had to assist as Nikki was squirming so much. She managed to push the first officer into a wall and broke his nose. The officer was not happy. After a short ten-minute drive, she was escorted from the police cruiser and processed at the local Syracuse police station.

The entire time she was being processed she kept screaming. "I want my lawyer, Brian Samuelson, of Jones, Seth and Reynolds in Boston. I also would like to know what I am being charged with." No one answered her, they just let her keep making demands while they processed her. Nikki was fearful, she didn't want to spend the night in jail.

After about half an hour, she was placed in a single person holding cell and allowed to use the phone on the wall to call her lawyer. He was in Boston and it would take him over four hours to arrive at the police station. They spoke via phone as he drove to Syracuse. She was only allowed a ten-minute call so she quickly explain what had happened.

Brian couldn't believe how his client had acted. He was tired of her antics but taking care of her legal affairs was part of his job. Nikki's father was one of his firm's biggest clients and it was a stipulation in his accepting him as a client. Sometimes the big clients had problematic children and Nikki was one of those type of children. He had worked extra hard to get her juvenile record sealed. Even Jane didn't know what she had done as a teenager. Brian had made sure of it once he found out that she was dating a police officer, a highly decorated and respected police officer at that.

After his brief call with Nikki, Brian called his assistant and asked him to call the New York Bar Association and ask for a reference for a criminal lawyer in Syracuse. He was not licensed in New York so he would need some assistance. They provided his assistant with a list of qualified criminal lawyers via fax and after a quick review the assistant narrowed the list down to three well qualified contenders.

His assistant quickly reviewed the contenders with Brian and then put them in rank order. The assistant went down the prioritized list until he found one of the lawyers that could meet immediately with Nikki. The assistant called Brian back and then Brian asked that his assistant arrange that he be called when Nikki met with this new lawyer. When they ended their call, his assistant started making all the arrangements.

Thirty minutes later, Nikki and Brian were meeting with Scott Anderson to discuss the charges pending against Nikki. The Syracuse PD also informed Scott that a restraining order request was being submitted by Boston PD Detective Francesco Rizzoli, Jr. on behalf of Boston PD Lieutenant Jane Rizzoli. Nikki just shook her head and screamed at the two lawyers, "She is my fiancée why is she getting a restraining order?"

Scott wondered what the hell he got himself involved in. After hearing Nikki's recount of the events and reading the preliminary police reports which now included assault of a police officer, he prayed that this mess would be resolved soon so he could enjoy the rest of his weekend with his family.

From her office, Maura had heard all the screaming and wondered what the heck was going on. It was very unusual for that type of screaming to be going on in the hospital. She was used to that type of screaming in the ER but not on the floor that she was on. Patients needed their sleep and normally the halls were very quiet.

She thought about getting up to see for herself what was going on but stayed in her office and told herself that she would check with one of the nurses after she met with Amelia. She had to figure out this situation with Jane before she attempted to do anything else. Finding out how Jane knew about her children was her top priority.

Stella had asked one of her friends, Judy, that was a nurse on Jane's floor to keep an eye on her and let her know what was going on with Jane. She called Stella and told her, "Stella, do not try and visit Jane for a while. That other lady that was trying to visit with Jane was just taken away in handcuffs."

"Oh, that is interesting. Thank you for the heads up, Judy, I truly appreciate it." Stella told her friend. This news pleased Stella. She had done some preliminary investigating and found out that Nikki and Jane had been engaged and were supposed to be getting married at the end of the year, which was news to her because the last time she had gone out with Jane, Jane said that she wasn't in a relationship with anyone.

She also found out that Nikki was a trust fund baby and had several failed attempts at marriage before. She wondered why Jane would be involved with someone of her background. She wouldn't concern herself with that now, she had to come up with a plan to get to see her Jane.

Judy replied, "No problem, I didn't want you to get into any trouble." Stella ended the call without saying anything further. Stella then decided that she would wait until Monday to try and see Jane. Having a friend on Jane's floor was very helpful. She would owe Judy big time for looking out for her.

It seemed to take Amelia longer to find a parking spot at the hospital than it did to drive to the hospital. She knew she should have just called an Uber. When Amelia entered the hospital, she went straight to Maura's office. She found Maura sitting on her sofa talking with Nina. Nina had lowered the lights after she saw how upset Maura was when she had entered her office. Nina knew that Maura found that very comforting when she was upset.

Maura stood up immediately when she saw Amelia and ran over to her. She started rambling again about Jane and her dream. Amelia told her, "Maura, please slow down, I can't understand you." After a few minutes and with Nina's help, Amelia had a greater understanding of what was happening. She turned to her friend and politely told her, "Let me go check in on Jane and I will see I if can figure out what is going on. Would you like to come with me?" It wasn't really a question so much as a polite request for Maura to accompany her.

Maura quickly replied, "Oh no, I think I will stay right here and wait for you to come back. Hopefully you will have some answers for me."

"Chicken, chicken." Nina stated as she made clucking sounds and flapped her arms at Maura. Nina enjoyed when she and Maura could joke around with each other. It had taken her almost five years to get to that point in their friendship.

Maura was very shy around people, except for her patients. She was very professional with her patients and had an impeccable bed side manner. Sometimes she was a little too clinical with her patients but when they asked her to further explain so that they could understand she did, which her patients and their families greatly appreciated.

"Hey, that is not fair." Maura clamored as she pouted and lightly punched Nina on the arm.

"Ow," Nina said as she made a face and held her hand up to where Maura had just punched her. "That hurt, Maura."

Maura smiled and looked at her friend and told her, "Don't be such a baby, Nina, that didn't hurt. I barely touched you."

Amelia looked at the two women and smiled, "Maura, I believe Nina has a point, didn't you tell me that you did not finish your check on Jane this morning. I know you are off of your trauma on call status so you have time to devote to your patient." Amelia knew that Maura had a two-week on call schedule and today was her first day off of her current two-week routine. In two-weeks she would be back on call again.

"Please, I would prefer to just wait right here." Maura stated firmly as she sat back down. Maura was apprehensive about seeing Jane again. She was concerned that Jane might share additional information with her.

"No, I can't have that. You have been present every time I have visited with Jane and I don't want that to change. You are her doctor of record and you should be present." Amelia informed her.

After a few minutes of talking the three doctors headed to Jane's room. When they arrived and opened the door to Jane's room, they were surprised to see a woman sitting on Jane's bed and lovingly holding her hand. Maura had a sensation go through her that she didn't quite understand.

When the woman saw the doctors, she quickly rose from Jane's bed and moved to the side. She noticed that Jane's heartbeat increased. Nina immediately walked over and silenced the heart monitor. Jane then told Gen, "Gen, these are my doctors."

Each of the doctors extended their hands for Gen to shake as Jane introduced them, "Doctor Maura Isles, my trauma doc, Doctor Nina Holiday, my orthopedic doctor and Doctor Amelia Sheppard, my neurologist."

"I am so happy you ladies are taking such good care of my favorite co-worker." All three looked confused.

As Jane noticed the confusion, she told the doctors, "she is my Police Chief and great friend, Genevieve 'Gen' Booker."

Nina was curious and asked, "So you came all the way from Boston to check in on Jane?"

"Of course, I wanted to be here yesterday as soon as I heard but as Boston's Superintendent-in Chief, I had a few things to take care of and so my husband made the reservations for first thing this morning. I was in my quarterly zoom meeting with other Chiefs, when the Syracuse Chief told me what had happened to Jane. He met me at the airport this morning and brought me here so I could see my friend for myself."

Gen caught her breath and then continued, "and Jane, I should say you are no longer my favorite lieutenant."

Jane was now puzzled, "What are you talking about Gen, who could possibly take my place?"

"No one Jane, you have been promoted to Captain, so now your military and civilian ranks will be equal. Effective the first of the month you will be Captain Rizzoli and will be in charge of the Criminal Investigation Division."

"Wow, thanks Gen, I wasn't expecting my promotion to go through for a few more months."

"I know, now I am sure these doctors have some things to discuss with you so I will go talk to my soon to be new lieutenant, Frost." Frost's eyes lit up. He knew that he and Jane had aced their respective tests but he had no idea the promotions would be coming so quickly. He and Jane thought it would be another four months or so.

Amelia stepped forward and asked Jane a series of questions as Maura checked her IV lines and Nina busied herself with Jane's chart.

Ace had looked over most of the debris from the plane and decided he would like to see the unidentified debris pieces. There were not that many unidentified pieces so it only took him a few minutes to look them over. One piece stuck out to him. He took pictures of it with his phone after asking the team chief for permission and then went home.

His wife, Cindy, was surprised to see him home so early. "Babe, why are you home so early?" The boys paused their movie that they were watching and got up off the couch and ran to their father. Ace knelt down when his boys approached so that he could hug them both.

"I was looking over the unidentified debris pieces from Jane's plane and I thought I recognized one of the pieces and I wanted to check out one of the boy's toys." Cindy followed Ace and the twins into their bedroom. Ace told them what toy he was looking for and the boys found it for him. He looked it over and then asked if he could borrow it. Both boys nodded and he said his goodbyes to his family and went back to work.

When Ace arrived back at the hanger, he immediately showed the toy to the team chief. He was impressed that Ace had identified the part. It was part from a children's realistic looking rocket. The team chief immediately assigned a few team members to research the toy and learn everything they could about it.

Dreams

Each time Jane slept, she was having dreams that involved Maura and her children. She decided she would write her dreams down. At every opportunity when she had a few minutes to herself she opened up her Notes application on her phone and dictated her recollection of her dreams. She didn't read them back, she just kept recording what she remembered from the dreams. She didn't want to deal with what her dreams meant, she just wanted to get herself situated enough so that she could go back to Boston and get back to work.
