Superstition
Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear
It had been one of our nights last night, it was a week night so I don't know why we took the opportunity, we drank too much, laughed too much, and had too much sex, I was sore. I was also shocked she'd actually managed to get up and get to work, maybe on time, which wasn't fair because I was off today, but I'd woken up in a zone late afternoon, with an idea brewing in my head.
Klaine
"I just got out the shower and I thought maybe I should ask her tonight, what do you think?" Sam sat on the phone face timing Blaine and Kurt, considering yet again his next move.
"Tina's not going to like it, I told you already" Kurt hissed at him
"She does have a mind of her own you know" Sam snapped back at him
"Okay you two" Blaine stopped the argument before it got into full flow
Kurt and Sam had always got this thing going on between them, Blaine couldn't make out exactly what it was, Rachel had told him years ago it was something to do with Sam not being gay when they'd first met, but he'd dismissed that because Kurt's beef wasn't with Sam perse it was with Sam about Mercedes. In all fairness Sam had never tried to come in the middle of their friendship because they'd known each other way before he came on the scene, and as far as he was concerned, he'd always respected that, and of course he didn't see Kurt as a threat to his relationship with Mercedes.
"I just wish I know what your boy's beef was" Sam told his friend
"You're a bad omen" Kurt snapped at him
"Bad omen, where the hell has that come from?" Blaine asked shocked
"He's a bad omen" Kurt repeated
"Explain yourself" Blaine told him, thinking this was the most obscure reason for giving someone the cold shoulder he'd ever heard
"Please" Sam voice full of sarcasm
"It's going to happen you two are not about to last, you cursed it yourselves" Kurt told him
"Pray tell" Blaine sat waiting for his boyfriend's explanation on his comment
"Everyone knows if you shake hands with someone across a threshold, you'll turn out to be mortal enemies, no matter what you thought about each other in the first place"
"So, we shook hand over a threshold?" Sam asked confused
"No" Kurt rolled his eyes "Mercedes and you, you met at my front door and shook hands, it's never going to work" he shook his head
"I didn't even know you were superstitious like that" Blaine laughed "if it's meant to be, it will be" he told him "And I'm sorry Kurt but just like us, Sam and Mercedes are meant to be"
"How can you be so sure?" Kurt asked
"We're willing to take the chance on us" Sam told him
"If that were true you wouldn't be here asking us that question now" Kurt snapped
"It couldn't just be about the fact that I trust your judgement, you're Mercedes friend and I just thought you'd be able to have some input, because it's a big step?" Sam asked
"I see that" Blaine stepped in "And Kurt's about to apologise" he looked at Kurt wide eyed, demanding he apologise to his friend
"It's alright" Sam told him "He's looking out for his friend, and I get that"
"There's no need to be rude about it" Blaine told them both
"Sorry" Kurt sulked
"It's okay Buddie, I'm actually happy she's got you on her side, looking out for her, you know, listen, we'll speak tomorrow"
"Hey" Blaine stopped him cutting the call "You do you, and good luck"
"Thanks" he smiled finally cutting the call to allow his music to carry on playing
I, I was 'bout to stay at home tonight (yeah, yeah), but my friend wouldn't take "No"
Grab my money, keys, and phone and I was out, so girl, so girl (Yeah)...
That really wasn't what he'd needed to hear, if Kurt was against it, whatever the reason, he could be sure he'd already had that conversation with Mercedes and sown the seeds of doubt in her head. He was fighting a losing batter right there, if that was the case. He sat wondering if it was even worth him bothering, he really wanted to ask, he really needed it to happen, and he knew her maybe better than Kurt after eleven, nearly twelve months of this intense relationship, he got up to get dressed having made the decision to carry on with his plan "Fuck it" he got up to dance around his room, he was ready for whatever was coming from this
Brittana
He hadn't even put the phone down before it was ringing again, he clicked the call on fumbling as his towel fell off "Hey Trouty" Santana's voice came down the phone
"Satan" he rolled his eyes, he was fed up with this girl calling him out of his name
"You dare to call me that to my face?" she snapped at him
"I've lost count of the times I've asked you not to call me that damn name"
"It's a habit, it takes a while"
"Likewise," he laughed "What's up?"
"Just spoke to Kurt"
"Really?" he rolled his eyes again, it used to be cute when everyone had something to say about their relationship, when they were starting out, but that free paper burned some time ago, and somehow if seems they hadn't gotten the memo "What did he have to say?"
"He's right about the superstitious stuff"
"He is?"
"Yeah" she flicked her camera on
"I'm not putting my camera on; I've just come out the shower"
"Grab a towel and turn it on, you don't have anything I haven't seen before, and you know I'm... I mean we're not interested, Britt's here too"
"Hi Britt"
"Hi Sam" he rolled his eyes, as he threw the phone on the bed and dragged on his joggers and a top before picking it back up to have this conversation, they thought was imperative
"So" he half smiled "What's up?"
"That first date you two had, remember?"
"Yeah" he smiled "We met up at yours, had a few drinks, and went on to the club, why?"
"You remember the room freezing when you walked in don't you?"
"I wasn't fazed, no one really knew me back then, as the new kid, you sort of expect that stuff" he laughed
"It wasn't because you were the new kid Sam" Brittany smiled at him
"Remember the keys?"
"Yeah, I threw my keys on the table, like everyone else, I only had eyes for Mercedes"
"Not like everyone else, everyone else waited for the jar to be offered, you threw your keys on the table"
"And?"
"There's a tale about a tradition in Sweden, that in the olden days' night workers threw their keys on the table to get clients, we'd just learned about that in history class the week before, then you come in throwing your keys like you had something to sell, I'm sure Mercedes got that you didn't understand what you were doing, but some of us..."
"You're shitting me, right?" he laughed
"No" Santana laughed "We watched you for a while, trying to work out if you were a gigolo" she laughed
"This is crazy" he looked at the phone "Have you all been thinking this shit about me the whole time?"
"Santana's third eye..."
"Stuff Santana's third eye, it doesn't know shit about me"
"Temper" Santana raised an eyebrow
"It's not temper it's frustration, for everyone thinking they know my girl better than me"
"We didn't say you didn't know her" Brittany piped in "Just that the whole relationship is jinxed, since you put your keys on the table"
"So, what you're saying is one of us, preferably me, is going to turn into a night worker?"
"Basically" Brittany shrugged her shoulders at him
"That's ridiculous, get off my phone" he ordered them "I don't believe in that superstition shit"
"Don't listen to us then, but you do this at your own peril" Santana told him "Bye"
"Bye" he snapped closing the call before Brittany could say anything else
...I, saw you standing there, across the room (yeah, yeah)
I watched the whole room freeze when you looked back at me through the crowd
So, girl, so girl...
He sat wondering why he wanted or even needed the opinions of these people that were so against his relationship with Mercedes, Santana had always hated him for that fake kiss Brittany, and he had shared in some party game he wished he hadn't gotten involved in. He'd took it in the neck for that one, but Mercedes soon realised Santana and Brittany were just being them, trying to wreak havoc for everyone that night and almost every other day since he'd known them, whatever their agenda was he wasn't getting sucked in. "Fuck it" he smiled at the music coming back on, he got up to dance around again. He was meeting Mercedes and some of the others at the local restaurant this evening, for food and shots, but he had plans for later in the night, so he wasn't planning on letting either of them get out of hand.
Finchel
No sooner had he gotten into the song it was ringing again, this was getting out of hand, he smiled at seeing Finn's name come up, he was always an ally in everything, so he was glad to answer "Finn" his voice jolly for the friendly voices
"It's Rachel" the cold voice came back at him
"Oh" he looked at the phone rolling his eyes at this girl's drama "Let me guess"
"It's not a joke" she snapped
"Sorry Dude" Finn's voice came through "She was sitting right next to it"
"You wouldn't have answered if I'd have called you on my phone"
"Kind of accurate" Sam huffed "How can I help you, Rachel?"
"I was hoping to help you"
"You want to help me?"
"I do" she chuckled "Just a bit of advice"
"Go" he rolled his eyes knowing he wasn't about to get her off the phone until she'd shed her bit of light on his situation
"This is true Sam" she hesitated before bringing her bit of Rachel drama "When I first saw Finn, I mean really saw him it was Friday the thirteenth, I remember because it was my Barbra dress up morning and..."
"Babe" Finn stopped her "The point"
"Yes" she coughed before getting back on point "I remember my dad telling me, because I was hesitant to do my ritual because it was bad luck Friday the thirteenth, anyway" she got back on point "Turns out history has Tuesday the thirteenth as the date that gets people nervous"
"Why?" Sam asked unable to make sense of what she was trying to tell him
"Well, it turns out that for the Spanish Tuesday, which is Martes in Spanish, comes from the Roman God of war which links the day to war, violence, bloodshed, and of course death"
"Which is a great history lesson, but what does that have to do with me?" Sam asked
"Yeah" Finn's tone told her he didn't get it either "What's this got to do with Sam?"
"You guys met and dated on a Tuesday, this thing between you is destined to fall to pieces, it's going to end in an all-out war" she gasped "And then today is Tuesday the thirteenth, it's a double jinx"
"Are you being serious right now?" Finn asked unable to believe the link his wife had made
"I'm glad you said it" Sam laughed
"We've celebrated on the thirteenth every month for the past eleven months, a year tomorrow, and nothing's happened"
"You can only push fate so many times Sam" she warned
"I really don't know why everyone's so against what I'm doing here, you guys all live your lives with no input from anyone else, I call one friend to get some advice and I end up with a trail of calls about superstitions, from the past, present, and even some for the future"
"I agree" Finn told him "Rachel" he looked at his wife
"You laugh now but these things are true" Rachel warned "Look at what happened to Jake and Marley"
"What happened to them?" Finn asked unaware anything had changed in their world
"She went out, forgot her keys and made the mistake of going back for them"
"What happened?" Sam asked concerned
"She caught him chatting to someone else on the phone, they're taking a break again now"
"Sad, but I don't get it" Sam sat confused listening to the story with no meaning
"There's an old saying in Lithuania or Latvia, somewhere around that area, about it being bad luck to return to your house for something you've forgotten" Rachel confirmed
"Where do you guys get all this stuff from?" Finn asked almost laughing
"I think Kurt started it, when you two met, to be honest I don't think he was your biggest fan" she laughed "But once we found that the handshake thing was true, we started looking at everything you guys did, and well, it doesn't make for a great happy ever after"
"Okay" Finn grabbed the phone off her "That's enough" he smiled at her "Dude, it's your girl you do you, the best way you know how"
"That's what I wanted to hear" Sam laughed
"She's on her phone, so expect another call from... I can't make out who it is" there was a silence before Finn came back to the phone "I can't hear a name, just take care dude, bye"
"Bye" Sam smiled before he closed the call
...You, you kissed me in the Uber (Uh, yeah)
We never made it to the room, yeah, because we did it in the pool, yeah
You could call it destiny (yeah) cause, I found the best of me in you (So)...
Finn was a giant compared to Rachel, but for some unknown reason she ruled him like a strict mother ruled her child, she'd say jump, he'd ask how high. It wasn't as if that was the wrong way to be, being in any relationship changes you, and there is this little word called compromise that allows both parties to ask all sort of things. To be fair she'd given things up for him in the past too, big things which might have meant they'd be further along their life's journey by now, but they were happy, and no amount of money or fame could buy that. He didn't feel like dancing when the music came back on, he sat listening to the noise between the sound wondering if the words of their so-called friends were really signs
Quick
"Please God" he raised his eyebrows as the phone went again "Quinn" he snapped it open "What fable to you have for me?"
"I don't have any dude" Puck's voice came at him "My battery's dead, and I heard the noise on the mill and wanted to encourage you to go for your dreams"
"Thanks" he smiled finally someone was on his side
"I figured if anyone needed relationship advice it wasn't you, that girl is so into you" Puck chuckled
"I feel that" Sam smiled knowingly
"She didn't have eyes for anyone until you came along" Puck laughed "I even tried my luck, but she wasn't having it"
"She loves you Sam" Quinn shouted
"I know" he laughed happy someone else could see what they had
"Pay no mind to all their superstitious bull shit" Puck laughed "Q and I met on the football pitch, kissed at her doorstep, had sex once; which gave use Beth, got lost in relationships with other people for a quick second, and got back together, and to my recollection there was no suspicious circumstances around any of it, if it's meant to be that shit just happens"
"I hear you on that one, that's how I feel about Mercedes and me"
"People tend to hold onto all the superstitious stuff to make themselves feel better when bad things happened, it's always got to be someone else's fault" Puck told him "I've learned the hard way, it's better to own your shit and fight to work it out, at least then you'll know if it means anything to you"
"Word" Sam nodded in agreement
"I've got proof that stuff doesn't work" Quinn laughed "They say if you step on cracks in the pavements, you break your mama's back" she huffed "I've stepped on plenty when I was young wishing for that shit, it hasn't happened, my mama's as strong as an ox"
"I've never really listened to that stull enough to say if it's true of not" Sam told her "But I know how I feel about Mercedes, some of you might think it's come on quickly, but everything between us has been quick, intense" he laughed "I think we started at love and worked our way up"
"I know my girl loves deep" Quinn smiled "Not often, but deep"
"Talking about love, how's my godchild coming on?"
"We're all doing fine, mom's eating for five, dad is spending for six, and this child is keeping us up all night already, in the nicest way" Puck laughed "This time is so different"
"For one you two are together" Sam told him
"And we planned this" Puck told him
"And we're married" Quinn added
"Totally different, I'm loving it" Puck announced
"Anyway, guys love chatting but I've got to pick Mercedes up in... forty minutes, speak soon" he laughed "And thanks"
"Bye Sam" Quinn called down the phone
"Dude" Puck stopped him from closing the call "I have the cure for all that superstitious bullshit" he laughed "Throw salt over your shoulder, works for me every time wards off those stupid fads"
"Thanks" Sam laughed "Later dude"
"Later"
I was at the right place at the right time, when we first came here, we was just strangers
The right place at the right time, yeah, when we dance slowly, was that meant to be?
Puck and Quinn hadn't been what you'd call role models when it came to relationships, in fact if anything, in their younger days, they'd been brilliant examples of what not to do to get someone to love you, or even like you. But since they'd publicly proclaimed their love for each other, neither had looked back, and they were expecting their second child who everyone knew was already the centre of their world. He smiled at the music on his phone again, this time he wanted to sing along while he got dressed
Tartie
"Is she ready?" Sam knocked the door smiling at Tina
"You're not smart Evans" she shook her head at him "Kurt told me what you're up to"
"Why is our relationship the hot topic on everyone's lips?" he stepped into the apartment
"Because my dear boy..."
"I'm not your boy" he snapped at her he'd had enough of all of them trying to put him off what he was trying to do "And whatever you say it makes no difference to me"
"They have a saying in Eastern Asia" she grinned walking towards him
"I guess they do" he laughed, "So far I've heard from Europe, Africa, and now Asia, this better be good"
"You're so rude, I don't know what Mercedes sees in you"
"You don't need to" he snapped
"Dude" Artie walked towards him from the other direction "Don't talk to her like that" he looked at Tina "Babe" he smiled "I've told you before keep out of Mercedes life, she won't thank you for it" he looked back at Sam "She's held up at work, she tried to call you but you're phones been non-stop engaged, she said give her half an hour" he smiled "And you're to wait"
"Thanks" Sam smiled
"I was just going to say" she cut her eyes at Sam and Artie "There's an old saying that poking your chopsticks straight down into your food is a massive no" she laughed "Not only is it seen as rude, it makes the sticks look like incense sticks they traditionally use for funerals, so they recon it invites death" she rolled her eyes "I defied fate so many times as a child, and as an adult if I'm honest and it hasn't done anything. These old superstitious myths would stop you from living if you believed every single one"
"I didn't expect that" Sam smiled "Thank you" he hugged Tina
"Don't think this means you get away stress free Evans, I'm still ready to put my foot up your ass if you make her sad or hurt her" she huffed "She loves deep, and somehow you got in there, don't fuck this up"
"Believe me, fucking this up isn't my intention"
"Glad to hear it" Tina smiled
"Babe, you need to finish getting dressed, the others will be waiting"
"Mercedes is late anyway" Tina reminded him
"Nevertheless, we should get going, give them some space, it's a big night"
"Are you asking or telling me?"
"Both" Artie laughed "Go get dressed, I need to dance with my girl" he watched her walk off "Give you two some space"
"I was thinking the end of the night" Sam told him
"You've sat on this too long already, just get it over and done with, then tonight's a celebration, isn't it?"
"I guess"
"For obvious reasons, I'm rooting for you guys" he laughed
"Obviously" he sat on the couch, listening to the TV until Artie and Tina left for the club "Fuck" he got up flashing his hands trying to get rid of the nerves "Come on you can do this" he told himself "What if she says no?" he shook his head dismissing the thought "We can still be together, it won't matter"
"What won't matter?" Mercedes walked into the apartment asking
"I was talking to myself" his head flew up, his eyes wondering around the room like a mischievous child "About you"
"Me?" she stopped taking her jacket off to ask "Did you think any more on what I asked about last night?"
"What did you ask last night?"
"Sam" she threw her jacket across the back of the couch and sat beside him "I knew you weren't listening" she huffed, leaning in to kiss him "How was your day?"
"Slow" he smiled pulling her back in "I've been waiting all day for that, it wasn't enough" he kissed her again "How was yours?" he asked when he let her go
"Tiring" she frowned "Maybe something to do with that bottle of whiskey we downed last night" she laughed "You were so out of it"
"Which is probably why I don't know what you're talking about" he laughed "But I woke up with an idea I need to swing past you, no pressure" he held his hands up "And if you don't want to its fine, well not fine, but it won't change things for us, because..."
"Sam" she stopped him "What is it?"
"We virtually do it anyway" he frowned "I mean you've got enough of your stuff at mine and well, to be frank I'm fed up of the twenty minute drive every day just to kiss my girl, plus we've always been exclusive, and I want to come home to you every damn night"
"So, it's a yes then?" she rolled her eyes with a smile on her face
"I haven't asked yet"
"I asked you last night" she looked at him strange "You mean you really didn't hear me?"
"Or maybe I did, because it's been swimming around in my head all day"
"So, are we saying we're officially moving in together?" she grinned at him
"Yeah, I guess we are" he smiled at her "Superstitions allowing"
"Oh" she rolled her eyes "Are you talking about Kurt's shaking hand at the door crap" she laughed
"Did you know they all think we're doomed?"
"They've all tried to scare me with some tales over the past few months" she laughed "But I tell them we've got someone bigger than their evil spirit, so they can try their best"
"We have that" he kissed her again
"Let me go pack a few things, I'll collect the rest the weekend"
"Do you need any help?"
"If you come to help me our friends will be waiting all night" she laughed "I won't be long" she wondered off into her bedroom, coming out half an hour later ready for a party with her suitcase packed "We're really doing this?"
"Unless you say different, we really are" he got up grabbed her case and made for the door
The Club
"Hey" they got to the club to see all their friends waiting, Mercedes smiling at everyone before sitting down
"Mercedes and I have an announcement" Sam told them "We've decided to move in together" he clapped his hands together happy
"Hurray" they all screamed back at him
"What?" he asked confused "But you..."
"A test Mr. Evans" Santana laughed
"We played you" Kurt told him "Both of you" he looked at them laughing
"This song has been in my head all day" Mercedes stood up and grabbed hold of Sam to find the dancefloor
...Ooh, if we wouldn't have danced all night (Cause if we wouldn't have danced) oh, then you never would've been mine, baby
Out of all the things you could have done, I'm glad you came tonight, cause girl, love will make you sing
Ooh-ah, ooh-ah, ooh-ooh, oh-ah, ooh-ah, ooh-ooh (Sing for me now)
Out of all the things you could have done, I'm glad you came tonight (tonight) yeah 'Glad U Came' by Jason Derulo
"Oh" Mercedes smiled at their friends, as they sat back down "A friend told me a true story today, this really happened to his uncle" she held her hand in the air "Apparently he told everyone it was his last drink for the night, and it turned out to be his last one ever" she frowned "Creepy isn't it" she looked at Sam and winked
