One World: Many Souls

Chapter 28: Triple Accomplishment

Papyrus' Point of View: Memory

"So, I see here Mr. Terians that you just finished your degree at the Coralstein College of Culinary Arts, correct?"

"Yes sir!" I commented enthusiastically to him. "I just graduated this winter as the second best in our class. Also, you are more than welcome to call me by my first name, Papyrus, if you would like."

"Yes, I did notice that in your resume. And likewise, my name is Gino." My potential employer carefully looked over the pages I'd placed before him. He focused in on some of the comments, or events, that I'd cooked for to see what my experience was. This would be my first job if I was hired. "Those are high and difficult marks to get. Regardless of the fact that you didn't get the top spot, getting into the top ten of the college is something to take note of."

"Thank you! I greatly appreciate those comments!"

"Now as for finding you a place in my restaurant, I see here noted that you have no previous work place history besides that of practice sessions that you preformed within the college itself, correct?"

"Yes, that is true. This would be my first introduction into this type of work place." I was a little worried for that part since I hadn't had any actual work experience before other than my work in the royal guard. "Even with the things that I have done, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty sir. I'm more than willing to start lower on the ladder if that's where I'm needed."

He raised an eye brow at that. The homely looking man who appeared to eat quite well was covered in a thin veil of sweat from running around the kitchen all morning. "So, I'd be willing to count on you to bus tables and wash dishes if that's what we needed?"

"Yes sir, all parts are needed. Having a beautifully cooked meal means nothing if you don't have a clean dish to place it on."

"Well now, that's a good attitude to have." He nodded at that, and a ghost of a smile I saw grace his lips hidden by the paper of my resume. "With my company, I do like to start everyone out for at least a short time being a dishwasher and bus boy to understand the importance of those jobs. They are just as hectic as being a chef or part of the prep stations."

"That's more than understandable, Gino. If you'd be willing to take me on, I'd be more than willing to start there."

"Good. Because that's where I'd like you to start." Gino stood up then and grabbed a few other papers on his desk while looking up something on his computer. "One of my dishwashers had to leave for a medical emergency and will be out for at least a month. I'd like to use that time frame for you to take over his position and help out, and this will be a way for myself and my other head chef to see how you work with our group. Think you can do that? If you can, I'll hire you right now."

"Really?!" The squeak like cry came out of me before I could stop it. I was sure my eye lights were glowing brightly. "Oh, I'd be more than willing to start the second you need me!"

"Great. Look, I gotta finish paperwork with you first and gotta set up a few things, but how about we start you on Monday? I need you here at five in the morning. There's lots of prep and cleaning before we can open the doors at six."

"Understood Gino! Boss! Sir!"

"Just Gino's fine kid." With that my new employer pulled out some papers for me. "Go ahead and sign these for me, and I need those papers like birth certificate and social security card or passport."

"You got it!"

Three Weeks Later:

The energy was high as I rushed around the small restaurant where I wished to get my first hand at experience in the culinary world. While the place I took care of was small, it was managed by another chef that had graduated from the same college as myself. His entire staff had some training from the college or from himself. It was one of the criteria that was required prior to higher.

I hurried to clean a table where customers had just left the restaurant. I'd grabbed the plates prior and our other dishwasher was working on it while I was running around. We were a small team, but a lovely little breakfast and lunch serving restaurant that focused on fancy breakfasts and lovely delectable sandwiches, soups and such for lunch.

The rush was just settling down as I raced to set up tables for the next customers that came through our door. Normally it would be the waiting staff would handle that, but they were down a person that day and I was doing well enough that I could pitch in and help a bit. Being versatile was highly noted by my previous professors and fellow colleges.

I hurried back to the kitchen with my bucket of dishes and set them quickly in the hot water that was ready for them by my fellow coworker Regina. She worked diligently to prepare the dishes for the next time they would be plated with food and out of the kitchen. She saw me and gave a nod that she noticed my work.

"Thanks Paps!"

"Let me know when you want to switch or go on break, Reggie! Its settling out there!"

"You got it! You do the same if you need a switch up there!"

"Right! Oh! Michelle!" I caught the attention of the manager on duty that was making sure things moved smoothly. Gino's partner and wife, she stood tall, but with a beaming smile as she saw me. I didn't disappoint. "I've cleaned off and prepared tables fourteen and eight for the Missy and the others!"

"Great work Papyrus! Go ahead and take out the trash while we have some time. Then take your lunch break! I'll have you switch out with Reggie afterward."

"Yes ma'am!"

Taking advantage of the quick break, I hurried to the back room where I left my prepackaged lunch. Angel had been kind enough to make me up something since I began working to assist with how busy I'd been. A lovely filling salad with lots of protein and flavor awaited me. I sat in the back room that looked out over the winter landscape, enjoying the feelings I felt there.

I was thrilled with the work and experience the second that I started my job. It was very different from the royal guard. Instead of patrols that I constantly did, I catered to customers. I spoke with them; they gave us tips if they saw us work hard enough. Though granted I didn't often get tips, but many looks. People were surprised that I was working at that little restaurant I was at. Gino's Eatery. A place where Angel and Sans often frequented for a quick bite on their way around the city if they had the time. Gino had been quite surprised to see me hand over my application for him those weeks ago, but I knew his place was where I wanted to work at. A different style then I was planning on.

My goal had been to open a fancy Italian restaurant that would focus on all three meals of the day. It would be a lot of work in the beginning as well as getting the right amount of staffing. I had a few ideal spots where I wanted to put the location, but I still needed a few years of experience in all the jobs of a restaurant to understand all there was to it and what I would put for stress on my staff.

"Yo Pap!"

I raised my head to see where two other staff members seemed to have been released from duty just before the lunch rush would come. Marcus and his good friend Levi came out of the kitchen with their lunches and phones at the ready.

"Hello there, Marc! Levi! Best enjoy your break before we get back to it!"

"Oh yeah man, we will." Both of them sat at the table with me. Marcus was the talker compared to Levi who was a bit quieter, but handy. "Hey, we just got sent some specialty homemade hot sauce from Levi's sister. You wanna try some?"

"Erm… perhaps another time gents. While I do enjoy spices, I try to refrain while on the clock if it's not one I'm used to."

Levi raised an eye brow.

It was Marcus who asked the question. "Spices don't settle well if too hot dude? Sucks, man."

"Yes, well, not to worry friends. You enjoy it for me, alright?"

"Yeah man, we got it."

The two of them took out their dishes of some sort of chicken they'd cooked up and placed a decent amount upon it. I could smell the sauce from my seat. It was positively potent. The gents enjoyed a rich spicy sauce. Levi's sister was into making hot sauces and sold them as a specialty item. She often had her brother trying her creations to see it they would be acceptable by the population. It was a homemade glass bottle with handwritten writing on it. Hardly legible in the slightest. But I was sure that the two males must have been aware of what it was before eating it.

I hoped so anyway.

"I will be back momentarily, friends." I commented to them just as they had their first bites. "I plan to use this time to check in on my son."

"You got it man! Say hi to the little dude for us!"

"Of course."

I took those moments to step outside. The cold felt lovely on my bones as I stepped out of the hot building. I enjoyed the quiet for a few moments before I pulled out my phone to call my sister who was watching them at the moment. She was five months along at the moment and resting at home because once again, she was having something amazing.

Twins. My sister was pregnant again with twin girls.

Not trusting anyone other than our friend, Alphys was kind enough to take a look and see what Angel was having as well as monitor the little ones. Now, Alphys though was not a human doctor and often called around to see about who was a trust worthy doctor to assist her in Angel's pregnancy, and even… her own!

I was so excited to hear that Alphys had gotten pregnant again so shortly after giving birth to their son, Zakhar. Alphys had to take careful time to explain to me it was quite easy for a woman to bear another child so soon after giving birth. She was currently a few weeks along.

As I thought about it later on, it was a miracle that Angel didn't get pregnant beforehand.

She and Sans weren't exactly quiet…

"Hello?"

"Sister! I'm on my break and wanted to check in and see how you were!"

"Oh, hello Papy!" She giggled as she moved about her home. I heard the loud clicking of the shoes she wore. "Things have been lovely over here, but I know Impact is eager for you to get home later. You're out at two, right?"
"Yes, I won't be staying late for clean-up. It's not my turn today and I've come in early for the last few days." I smiled at how pleased my boss was for the extra help, even if he did have to pay a bit in overtime for it. I tried not to show up too early. I would hate to take every lining of his wallet. "Is there anything you think that I should pick up before coming home or perhaps that the little ones require?"

"Hm… not that I can think of. If anything… I might be craving a bit of homemade ice cream if you'd be willing to make some?"

"Oh Sister… that's an easy thing to-"

But my attention was grabbed then when I watched to my co-workers flailing a bit on the inside of the break from. Through the large picture window we had, I noticed just many of them were struggling to either breathe of cough. Levi I saw rush to the bathroom while Marcus was what appeared to be hurling in a trash can.

"Oh dear! Sister, I'll get back to you later!" My feet were flying before I could stop myself. "It's an emergency!"

"Okay." Sensing the urgency in my voice, she didn't put up any fight. "Go!"

And with that my sister promptly hung up on the phone on me. It was shoved back into my pocket at the same time I hurried back into the door. I could see the men had used a far more decent amount of the hot sauce that they'd been given by Levi's sister and at that moment, the back room smelled worse than before.

"Michelle! Gino!" My cries carried out where thankfully only the kitchen door was close to us. "Come help!"

"Papyrus?!" In rushed my boss and his wife while I was tending to Marcus who was kneeled on the floor. While his stomach could give no more, he still coughed and dry heaved. "Oh for the lord's sake you two! Hot sauce again!? I told you to do that off the clock because you two can't hold your sauce!"

With a groan Gino struggled not to kick the trash can out from under poor Marcus.

"Neither of them are fit to continue working their shift." Michelle sighed before her attention was turned to me. "Papyrus, I'm going to need you to help us out of a pinch. Are you ready?"

"Wh-really?" With one more pat to my co-worker's back before standing. "What can I do to help?"

"Prep Reggie that she'll be on her own and let the wait staff know they'll need to pick up the slack in the dining area. You won't be out to help them since you'll be taking over the skillet and prep work. I'll help you pick up the slack." The wife turned to her husband. "Gino, get those two ass-wipes taken care of and then you take over for me so I can try to salvage this train wreck."

"Consider it done, Love."

"Get to Marcus and Levi's stations Papyrus." Michelle turned back to me with this determined gleam in her eye that reminded me a lot of my sister. "We have work to do before the second wave hits."

"Yes ma'am! I'm on it!"

Later That Afternoon:

When my body finally landed in a chair nearly six hours later, four hours of overtime under my belt, we finally were cleaned up and ready to go home. I was so happy it was a day off tomorrow so that I could rest.

The set back of being down not only part of the wait staff, the one bus boy that I took over for, and Levi and Marcus, we struggled and ended up staying open later to take care of all the orders that came through. The clients thankfully knew they were getting good food and were happy to wait on their orders, but it was tiring none the less. I was getting out at four rather than two.

I was eager to go home and see my son… I was so tired…

I hoped my sister would forgive me for only buying her some ice cream rather than making it.

"Papyrus, you did an excellent job today." It was Michelle who stopped me as I was willing myself out of the chair I was planted in. "You truly stepped up today after those idiots screwed us up. We really have to thank you for that. Expect a bonus in your next paycheck and I think we may need to have a chat about switching around some positions around here."

"R-really?" But that left a sour taste in my mouth. "But what of Marc and Levi's positions? I don't wish to take them from them."

"Oh, don't you worry about those two." The woman merely rolled her eyes. "Those two have done this a few times and I'd warned them before that if they didn't get their acts together, I'd kick them to the curb. They intentionally did this Papyrus, even if they acted like good people, they'd do that to themselves to head out on workman's' compensation."

I gasped at her words. "W-what?! Why in the world would they do that?"

The woman shrugged. "Couldn't tell ya, besides wanting to bleed us dry. But we'll talk to you on Thursday about some switching around. Bennie is coming back tomorrow so we should be able to make due. Wednesday is normally a lighter day in general, and I'm gonna look to higher some new folks. Summers coming soon and we're gonna need them after heaving those two idiots to the curb."

"Well… if that's your decision."

I suppose there still was a lot for me to learn. Either that or I truly needed someone at my side who could help me know who was a bad person to have around and who wasn't.

"So that's that. Go ahead and get home to your family. Oh, and take this with you." I was handed a small lunch box. "I heard you muttering about making ice cream from your sister and that you couldn't do it after today. Gino whipped up a batch for you to take home for the family."

"Michelle…!" I couldn't believe the kind person before me.

"Don't worry about it, but do me a favor and bring by that little munchkin of yours at some point. I'd love to see him if you feel up to it."

"Of course! I will make time for it!"

And it was just then as I was turning to head home with a large smile on my face from the day's events did I see a few text messages for me to read through.

Hey! Hope everything's okay. Let me know when you're out.-Angel

Hi ya Papy! How was work today?-Lilly

I smiled at the messages before calling my sister first to inform her of the news and then my newest friend. And I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. There always seemed to be a good honest person for every bad one I could find out there. Maybe the world isn't so terrible as others make it out to be.

Witch's Note:

And here we are at seeing Papyrus do so well after only just starting his job a short while ago! How fortunate for him! And great for him to show off his skills! But I can't lie, his co workers aren't exactly the smartest… XD

What a cute chapter, plus a way to see Papyrus starting the new leg of his life while he works. Seems he still lives with the others, but that's pretty fair since he only just started. He needs some money before he moves onto the next leg of what he's hoping to do!

But let's have some fun while Papyrus gets settled and take a look at some of the amazing reviews we have! Review time!

Shadow8Phantom: I'm really glad you liked the scene with Frisk and her friends! To be perfectly honest, the bacon scene was real… and it was me who was the bacon crazed person in college… Not quite as crazy as Sophie, but I did ask Mystic to get up with me early on a Wednesday morning to go get some. Since I had morning classes and she didn't. So take that for what its worth! XD

And the special moments between Asriel and Frisk as she works through still more lingering steps of her past trauma I think she's doing well in. There's still more to come, but we'll see as she continues to move past it. And Asriel has been a great help in that.

Oh? And your ready to make an evaluation? Fair enough, and with more of our Frisk chapters we'll still be seeing Asriel more. Not sure if you're evaluation will change or not, but we'll see. I'm eager to see what you have to say.

Thechaosemaster: You couldn't be righter, Chaos! Poor Frisk and Pap did have horrible times with the first person they dated. Too young and blind to see it at the time for what their partners were worth, and they struggled, hard through it, but now are on the mend, both of them.

Makes me so excited to see them grow and learn as time passes.

And as for that doctor… I know that Mystic has been looking for him, but not much luck. So, she's been putting her frustration into Luke I think…

Mystic Girl: (She sticks her head out of the secret door to the dungeon.) Chaos! I need you down here! To the basement! Now!

Not A Shady Guy: I know the feeling Shady, it's great, but it's a constant reminder. I know she'll get better at it as time goes on. Those wounds will heal and eventually she'll be mostly a normal human being. Some scars never fully heal, but most will with time, especially the emotional ones.

But it makes me so happy to see her take inspiration from what she's gone through and let it soar through her. As that amazing music prodigy as we know she is, she'll do great! And me personally knows that too well. Sometimes as a writer, its hard to keep writing until just the right string of actions or thoughts happen and then, BAM! It overflows in your mind and you have to get it down.

MysticBoywastaken: Its good to see you, Mystic Boy. And while I can't know exactly how you're feeling right now, those feelings stick with you for a long time. The closest way I can relate to you in any fashion is when my last boyfriend and I had broken up. It was years before I met Jager, my current boyfriend. Let's call my ex… Hew. Hew was really nice to me and seemed very interested when we first started dating, and while I can't say as drastic as perhaps what you went through, I didn't realize my friends and family were put on hold a lot for him. I was putting too much of my time with him that my other relationships weren't doing so well, and Mystic Girl can attest to this as I know she will.

Toward the end of our relationship, I didn't know anything was wrong other then him pulling away from me. No matter what time we spent together, it felt like I was alone. I didn't know why, as it was a sudden thing. Then he found me crying on the couch of his apartment one day and said it was for the best if we split. I didn't want to, but he insisted for my health and mental state. It really killed me for a while, especially since I still to this day don't know what happened and I never will. Was I not good enough? Why didn't he care about me anymore? It killed me for a long time, and it took years to let those scars settled before I could even think that maybe I was ready, and I had to let love come to me and be brave. I met Jager almost seven years later and I was the brave one to reveal my feelings and ask him out. I had to be the brave one that time.

Again, I don't know how your feeling, but this is a major life step for you to take your time through. Healing won't come easy, and you'll need time. Take it carefully, and let yourself heal. You can't blame yourself for feeling that way because you thought they were a good person and you grew to love them. Growing those feelings took time, and feeling differently or not feeling at all will take time too. It will take some time for your heart and mind to come to the same understanding.

Mystic Girl: And coming from me, I do know how you feeling actually. The first time I met Mystic Man, when I broke up with him I wasn't sure if it was my fault or not. I basically know how it feels. When I found him again six year later, my feelings for him didn't change, but grew.

Man… what a chapter, and lots of typing afterwards! Now! Now we come for the very fun part! Don't miss out on the next chapter! Because we have everyone included in it. For some very fun… what I like to call… payback.

Love you all and see you next week!
