A/N: This is a brain child I had that I had to write out, and I'd figured I'd share The story doesn't follow the timeline perfectly, and may even be a bit confusing at times, which I apologize for. This is my first ever fanfic, so please let me know if there is anything I can improve on. The story starts right after season 1 of RWBY, so hopefully that helps make some things clear. Please enjoy!

"Just so we're clear, it's your fault we ended up in this situation," Weiss grumbled to Ruby, as they trudged their way through the dark forest, "If you hadn't decided to run off the moment you saw some weird flash, we could have just gone back to sleep and dealt with this in the morning".

"Come on Weiss," Ruby whined as she walked ahead of the annoyed heiress, "You were the one who decided to follow me".

Weiss sighed as she lightly facepalmed, "Yes because I don't want our idiot team leader to get herself killed on our first mission".

Ruby frowned at Weiss's statement. Sure, she WAS the one that decided to run off after seeing a weird flash light up the forest, but she still didn't like how much Weiss looked down on her. "I can look after myself," She pouted, "I don't need anyone babysitting me".

At Ruby's words, Weiss started to feel her annoyance grow, and tick mark slowly grew on her forehead, accompanied by an uncomfortable heat filling her body. "What do you mean look after yourself?! You're 2 years younger than everyone else, you can barely look after yourself let alone a whole TEAM".

A tick mark similar to Weiss's began to make itself known on Ruby's forehead. "AGAIN with the whole team leader stuff. What happened to 'Becoming a good teammate'?" Ruby said, exasperated.

Weiss gritted her teeth, her frustration growing, the heat growing hotter along with it. She opened her mouth to snap back, but the words died in her throat when they walked into an open clearing, with a glowing portal in the middle of it.

"AHA, I knew I wasn't seeing things," Ruby cheered as she ran toward the portal to investigate. Weiss, surprised, slowly followed behind Ruby, eyeing up the portal with cation. It wasn't very big, in fact it was barely big enough to fit a young adult. From her angle, it was hard to see exactly where the portal led. All she could see through the portal were red skies, and an almost… hellish landscape. Weiss was so distracted by trying to get a better look, that she almost bumped right into Ruby, who had stopped about 5 feet away from the portal. Ruby was frozen stiff, and incredibly pale, as if she had seen a ghost. "Is everything alright Ruby?" Weiss asked, as she positioned herself besides the fear stricken girl.

"Weiss…" Ruby shivered, "Somethings off about that portal. I-I don't think we should get any closer," she stuttered, taking a couple steps back from the portal, "Let's head back, and tell Ozpin about this".

Weiss snorted under her breath. As the heat grew stronger, a dark, ancient voice began to whisper into Weiss's ear, "The silver eyed one is so childish, getting scared over such a mundane thing. It's probably just someone's semblance. Oh well, this is your chance to prove that you would be a better leader." Weiss took a couple steps closer to the portal, leaning in to examine it.

"Weiss…" Ruby called out cautiously, "Maybe we shouldn't get so close".

"Relax Ruby, it's probably just someone's semblance," Weiss said, as she circled around the portal, "Or this may even be dust related". The mysterious voice continued on, "Imagine, If this is dust related, this could be your chance to secure your position as heir." The heat grew hotter still. Weiss smirked. "There is no way father would overlook you for your suck up of a brother if you brought him an opportunity like this."

"Weiss, are you ok," Ruby said as she slowly approached Weiss, her concern for her partner overriding her fear of the unnatural presence of the portal, "you seem a little off".

Weiss ignored her, as she continued to circle around the portal, seemingly putting all of her attention onto it, but unknown to Ruby, her mind was elsewhere, as the dark voice continued to whisper to her, and a manic smile started to emerge on her face. "In fact, it wouldn't hurt if you were to end up being the leader of the team. If your father ever learned that your current leader is a mere child, he might just straight up declare that foolish suck up as heir. She is a hindrance to your future". The heat was starting to become too much. It was almost unbearable.

"WEISS," Ruby shouted as she grabbed Weiss' shoulder, wincing as she felt a burning heat through Weiss's clothes. Weiss turned her head to face Ruby, the crazed smile having fully blossomed across her face. "What's wrong with you!" Ruby exclaimed, horrified by the look on her partner was giving her, "You won't answer me, you're burning up, and you're smiling like crazy. TALK TO ME WEISS!".

Weiss stared at Ruby, the madness spreading from her smile to her eyes. "She is in the way," the voice said. At those words, something inside Weiss snapped, and she started to chuckle, which then grew to a full blown laugh as she grabbed Ruby by the collar and pulled her in so they were face to face.

Ruby stared at Weiss in shock, watching as Weiss continued to laugh like a maniac. "Weiss… what are you doing," she asked, fear evident in her voice.

Weiss didn't answer the question, instead letting her laughter slowly die. Weiss looked Ruby in the eye, as if contemplating something. After a couple seconds of silence, she finally spoke. "You know Ruby, when we first met, I had you pegged as some whiney little child," she said, "and all you have done so far is prove me right. You got into Beacon by showing off some flashy moves that literally ANYONE here could have done. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to… use other moves to convince Ozpin to let you in."

Ruby's eyes widened at the implications of Weiss's words. "NO, I would ne-,"she tried to say before being cut off as Weiss continued her rant.

"You constantly need to be doted on by your sister, and you TOOK the position of team leader away from me." Weiss continued to rant, her anger clearly evident in her voice, "I should have been team leader. Ozpin made a mistake. I could have done a way better job than you HAVE done and than you could EVER DO". Tears began to well up in Ruby's eyes. "And you want to know what's worst of all Ruby," Weiss said, her crazed smile growing even more, "You're in my way".

"Weiss, why wo-" Ruby was cut off again as Weiss threw her through the portal with more strength then she should have had. Just then, bursting through the tree line, came Yang and Blake, just in time to see Ruby fall through the portal.

"RUBYYYYYYYYY," Yang screamed as she launched herself forward, using Ember Celica to launch herself forward as fast as she possibly could. But it was too late. As Ruby fell through the portal, it began to close, rapidly shrinking. Yang could only helplessly watch as Ruby cried out in shock, before the portal closed with her inside.
