It was nights like this that Ethan lived for.
He was curled up on the couch at the end of the working week, with the pattering of rain on the window whilst he was sharing a bottle of wine with his wife.
His wife.
They had only been married for six weeks and she was currently cuddled with him, warmth coming from the blankets that lay around their shoulders and over their legs and from her body tucked into his chest. She took a sip of her wine and the light from the lamp that illuminated them caught the wedding band around her finger just perfectly to make it glint.
Noticing her wedding ring was still enough to give him a rush.
The noise from the television had faded into the background, neither of them paying attention to it anymore. Ethan was too busy admiring his wife, he threaded his fingers through her hair, that she was actually wearing down for once instead of in her signature pigtails. She had a light flush over her cheeks that usually surfaced when she was feeling a bit tipsy and made her look downright adorable.
Lyra looked up at him and pressed a kiss to his jaw. Ethan turned his head to catch her lips and kissed her gently, pulling her as close as he could. She pulled away, eyes shining and drained the rest of her glass, Ethan felt heat rush to his cheeks and looked away bashfully under the weight of her adoring gaze.
"Refill?" she asked. Lyra always had been partial to a bit of rosé, and they'd gotten an expensive bottle for their wedding that would ideally be used for a special occasion.
To Ethan though, any time he got to spend with Lyra was a special occasion.
Ethan gulped down the rest of his own wine and refilled both glasses, his own head feeling light and giddy. Lyra took a sip and settled back against him, pressing another kiss against his Adam's apple. She trailed kisses from his neck to the juncture between his neck and shoulder and back again.
It was Ethan's turn to stare lovingly at her and he did until she connected his lips for languid kisses. She brought a hand up to his face and gently stroked his cheek with her thumb.
"If you're going to be this affectionate," Ethan said, "I think I need to ply you with wine more often."
Lyra smiled, "I just feel really happy right now."
"Me too," Ethan said before joining their lips again.
They eventually finished their next glasses, after that they just passed the bottle between them, taking swigs whenever they felt like it.
Ethan took Lyra's hand and kissed her wedding ring before pressing a kiss to her knuckles, feeling a warm sensation spread through his body and settle in his chest.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too," she replied.
"I love you so much," Ethan said as he kissed her again, "You're my first thought I have when I wake up, the last thought I have before I sleep and every thought I have in between."
A strangled sound tore from Lyra's throat as she launched herself at him for a much more forceful kiss than they'd had all night, bottle of wine slammed on the coffee table in front of them.
"I thought we said at our wedding that we'd used all our sappy lines for a year?" she laughed, her eyes bright with affection.
"It's easy to think of them when I'm with you."
"Stop it! You're too much sometimes."
Ethan chuckled as he pulled her back into a cuddle, the blankets around them had shifted, revealing that the shirt of his that she was wearing had ridden up past her thighs, revealing that she was wearing nothing else underneath.
He swallowed thickly as he tucked the blanket back around them, a shiver ran through Lyra as her skin was exposed and she curled closer to him to get as much of his warmth as possible. Ethan kissed the top of her head and took a deep breath of her raspberry shampoo.
Ethan took another swig of the wine as he went back to admiring his wife. She looked positively radiant now, a wide and infectious smile on her face. His free hand went back to her hair, fingers running through the brown tresses on her head.
"Feels nice," she sighed contentedly as she took the wine from him so she could have a drink herself. Ethan's free hand came to rest her side and he traced a circle with his thumb.
At this point, Lyra was pretty much purring. Her hand came to rest on his chest inside his shirt as she mimicked his motion on her side.
The TV channel that was on had long since finished its usual programming, now just on reruns of old game shows. Still, neither of them paid any mind. There was no consideration to the grocery run that they'd have to do in the morning, to the visit to Lyra's dad's that was arranged for the afternoon or to the inevitably difficult weeks that were coming up after the weekend was over.
In that moment, there was just each other.
Ethan took the wine bottle and finished what was left, setting it back on the coffee table. As soon as glass touched wood, Lyra straddled his waist and pulled him into a deep kiss, her hands wandering around his body under his shirt.
"Think you can check we've locked up and then join me upstairs as quick as you can?"
Ethan smirked, deciding to play coy with her, "I could, but I was pretty comfy there. Maybe I just want to cuddle."
Lyra leaned in close to whisper in his ear, canting her hips towards him, "We could, but I want you Ethan."
Ethan's mouth suddenly went very dry and he swallowed to clear it, "I'll check."
Lyra climbed off him and made her way towards the stairs with a wink. Ethan got up and turned the television off, checking all the doors before joining her upstairs.
Looks like his night was getting even better.
