Anabeth's day was not going so well, but it usually never did; it didn't bother her that much. Today was just one of those days - everything was moving at a slow pace.
"Hey Anabeth, how's Mr. Scofield doing?" Piper asked as she came to a stop beside her, sipping her venti.
"Umm he's doing fine just a little loopy from the meds , hopefully he'll be going home soon " anabeth said as she walked into the elevator.
"Ahh, good. We're still on for tonight?" Piper asked, keeping the doors to the elevator open, simultaneously annoying a grumpy old man inside.
"Yeah, wouldn't miss it for the world," Anabeth said exaggeratedly, slapping her friend's hand away from the elevator door.
the doors closed with a ding and Anabeth slumped against the wall , she was sooo tired and sleepy , she just wanted to lay on her big soft bed .
She still had two more patients to check and then she could go to the stupid girls' night her friends planned because they hadn't been spending enough quality time together lately; as if they didn't see each other at the hospital every other hour.
the elevator dinged again and the doors opened, the grumpy man left and a man about her age entered the elevator in a wheelchair.
At first she barely glanced at him but then he asked her "how do I look ? , I'm about to propose to my girlfriend , so besides the gown and the ghostly pale face from being in the hospital for the past week ... do I have a shot ?"
Then Anabeth looked at him; he had the most beautiful green eyes she had ever seen, the kind you could get lost in. His hair was jet-black and slightly damp, as if he had just come out of a shower.
Anabeth finally smiled and said " she'd be a fool to say no".
That made him grin "let's hope so " he said just as the doors opened and he wheeled himself out .
Now Anabeth was alone in the elevator and she smiled absently, wondering how people out there were in love and proposing, while she just couldn't seem to get out of this damned hospital.
the doors opened again and it was her floor , as she walked out she made her way to the front reception
"Hey Sel , did u send Ms Shelly's pancreatic fluid to the labs yet ? Anabeth asked grabbing a chart with name Louis Shelly on it .
"not yet , I'm letting her rest a bit" Selena said while typing away at the computer.
"Okay, but make it fast; I want to discharge him as soon as possible. He's getting homesick." Anabeth said as she walked into a patient's room, slowly walking towards the bed and grabbing the charts before flipping through them. Being a cardiac surgeon meant people could develop problems within a couple of hours, and you had to be there as soon as possible, or sometimes anticipate something that might happen. In short, it was difficult, but she just loved hearts - the anatomical ones.
"Hey Doc, how am I doing?", said the patient from the bed, Mr. Hans, in a weak voice , sitting up a bit and reaching for the water, gulping the the whole thing in one go.
"Let's see...the blood pressure seems to be in a good range, the oxygen levels are okay." Annabelle flipped through the pages and then put the chart away. "But just to make sure, I'll check as well." Annabelle took out her stethoscope and placed the chest piece over Mr. Hans chest. "Take a deep breath for me, please." She said as she moved it around a bit; finally satisfied, she checked his stats on the BP machine and oxygen levels.
"Everything is perfect; your pacemaker works efficiently, and it looks like you should be going home tomorrow," Annabeth said as she picked up the charts to sign them. She looked at her watch; it was 8:16 p.m., which meant she had been working for over twelve hours.
"Thank you, doc," Hans said, sighing in relief. "No problem. Have a good night." Annabeth said as she left the room and walked over to the waiting area, just grabbing a bottle of water and walking over to Selena. "So...the fluids?" She asked, opening her bottle and taking a long sip.
"Yeah in a while, he's really sleepy, let the guy sleep," Selena said as she got up and stretched. "You know the reason why he's so sleepy now, it's because you let him sleep during the daytime instead of the night. It's 8:20 and he's been asleep for four hours; do you really think he'll fall asleep tonight?" Annabeth asked, sounding slightly irritated. She hated when things didn't go according to her plans; she had been discharged from the hospital already, but now she had to wait until the sample was sent to the lab.
"Alright, calm down he's like 78 , gosh I'll do it right away , here just sign it and go " Selena said handing her the charts , "nope that's wrong, I can't sign off on something you didn't do , it's fine I'll wait " Annabeth said as she walked back towards the elevator " it better be done Sel , I'll back in 5" she yelled as she pressed the button for ground floor , it's fine deep breath's just 10 more minutes until she'll be in the car and driving off

The elevator came to a halt , as she walked out and towards the reception "hey Reyna did piper leave yet?" She asked looking at the black haired woman who was busy writing something down , her brown eye looked up and smiled "nope , but she said she'll be leaving with you , for the hangout , which by the way I need a ride to " Reyna spoke as she got up and grabbed her stuff from the desk
"Yah no problem, I still have a patient to check though " Annbeth said as she finished her water and threw it in the trash can
"Okay, great. I'll just go change while you do that; meet you in ten," Reyna said as she walked away toward the locker room. Annabeth turned around to leave when she saw the elevator guy wheeling himself out of the elevator and toward the reception area.
"Hey , so how'd it go , the proposal ?" Annabeth asked taking out her phone to text piper as she looked over at the guy
"Ahh not so go well" he said shrugging his shoulders
"Ohh sorry." Annabeth said smiling apologetically. "Her loss," she added.
"No I was proposing for all the wrong reasons... I mean I liked her and all but I guess... what I liked most about her was her BPO " he replied pursing his lips slightly
"You don't have insurance ?" Annabeth asked confused and a bit curious, almost everybody's got insurance
"I cashed out about three operations ago, so I've been paying for it on my credit card," he replied, running his hands through his hair and clearing his throat.
"Do you mind if I check you at your chart ?" Annabeth said , already reaching for his chart on the back pocket of his wheelchair, "uhh no go for it " he said bending a bit and looking over to Annabeth
Annabeth started to flip through his chart " I'm warning you though it's pretty scary stuff , just saying " Percy nervous said to which Annabeth chuckled and smiled a bit , but her smile vanished as she flipped a couple of pages " wow umm you have Avon Hippel lindau disease ... and you've been hospitalised for almost 200 days in the last 3 years " she said as she looked over to him
"Yah a lot of good memories " he said sarcastically, smiling a bit
"Dr Chiron's your surgeon ?" Annabeth asked turning to him , "Yah not for long , I'm getting discharged today" he said as he shifted in his seat uneasyly
"You have a pretty dangerous tumour on your adrenal gland , they're not just gonna throw you out , I'll see what I can do " Annabeth said confidently, putting his chart back on the chair
"Look, I don't know how much your fee is but I can't afford it " Percy said, looking serious. He once again waved his hand through his hair; it seemed to be a nervous habit, Annabeth thought, just like Piper's tapping foot. Her phone rang; it was Piper—her shift must have ended.
"It's no problem " Annabeth said as she picked up the phone and walked towards the elevator "hey are you done ?" Piper asked over the phone , "uhhh Yah meet me in the lobby in 10 min ok ?" Annabeth said getting in the elevator, "alright, see you" piper replied as the line went dead .

The elevator opened onto a floor, and it was just her luck; Chiron walked in, smiling. "Hey, Annabeth," he said. "Working late?" He stood beside her as the elevator started moving again.
"Ummm, not today sir," said Annabeth, looking down at her feet as she shifted them nervously. "I actually wanted to talk to you about a patient of yours, Percy Jackson. He has the Von Hippel-Lindau disease." Annabeth paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. Chiron and her went way back; he was more than just her mentor, he was like a father figure to her . And she respect him greatly, but asking about patients isn't part of the usual conversations.
"Hmm...Yeah, good kid. He's getting discharged today." he replied nonchalantly, but raised his eyebrows a bit, looking curious.
"He has a rare disease, one that's life-threatening," she said, a bit taken aback. Chiron had always been the helping type—sticking up for the weak and poor. So when he said Percy would be discharged, Annabeth became a bit persistent.
"You can do it pro bono," she said quickly, looking eagerly at the well-experienced doctor who was already rolling his eyes. "Percy requires long-term medical care, and the hospital just can't afford it." He said stepping out of the elevator as he made his way towards the indoor staircase leading up to the offices.
Annabeth didn't know why but she didn't wanna let it go , so she followed after him "oh so we do nothing " she said as he matched his stride up the stairs
"No, we treat him with drugs and schedule him for follow-ups at the clinic," he replied as he kept walking without looking back.
"Well we might as well do nothing " annabeth said in an annoyed voice as she looked at Chiron , which seemed to have slowed him down
"Look, I wish I could help him, I really do, but my hands are tied." He replied, looking at her with a sympathetic expression. He did seem sorry, but Anabeth wanted to press a bit more.
"That's a load of bull," Annabeth said, crossing her arms. "I've seen you bend the rules around here; come on."
"Dr chase that is enough " Chiron said giving her a serious look ,but it didn't fool Annabeth , she had seen it a thousand times , and she couldn't see right through it
"Look after what happened with Luke and ... you know ... I- I just want to do something good today , make it up or pay it forywhatever you wanna call it ... I just need to do some good" annabeth said , memories flooding in her mind , but she shook them away , more pressing matters at the moment than Luke
Chiron looked at her for a moment, blinked, and sighed. "I'll set up a meeting with the review board," he said as he walked away slowly. Leaving Annabeth smiling in the hallway.
Annabeth walked toward the elevator once more; she still needed to sign Ms. Shelly's chart. On the elevator ride, Annabeth thought about Percy. He was in his prime, but unfortunately, he was currently battling a losing battle. Sometimes she wished she could just cure people magically, which was one of the reasons she became a doctor.
Annabeth walked out towards the reception for the second time in the last hour " did you do it Selena ?" Annabeth asked slumped against the reception desk
"Yup," she said handing over the charts. Beaming at her, Annabeth returned the grin right back. Finally, it was over; she could go home.
"Hey Bethy," Piper said sliding her arm around Annabeth's shoulder. As Reyna joined her on the other side, she continued, "We need a bunch of beer and chips and dips." Reyna interrupted her, saying, "And toothpaste! It's been three days; I can't keep using mouthwash. It makes me feel weird." She made a face and shuddered.
" too the supermarket it is " annabeth declared as she unlocked her car getting in the drivers seat , she drove away from the hospital as piper blasted some music.
