Chapter One: Meeting Other Birds

"Be careful out there dear. And don't be long. I need you to help watch your little siblings." Eva says as Alexis is preparing to fly off from the tree.

"Yes mom. I'll be back soon. Besides dad should be back from his trip into the city soon." Alexis says.

"Not the point. Be back and I mean it." Eva says as Alexis playfully rolls her eyes.

"I will don't worry." Alexis says.

"Alright. We'll have fun then dear." Eva says as Alexis flies off.

"Oh it feels good to get away from the tree for a while. The city really is beautiful from this spot. Huh? What are those two birds doing?" Alexis asks as she spots two birds nearby on a building dancing before deciding to fly closer but staying out of sight.

"Come on man. I'm starving. Aren't you?" A red bird asks as he stops dancing.

"Well yeah but we should really keep practicing for our party Pedro." A yellow bird says as he continues dancing.

"Man enough practice for now. I'm going to hunt for some food. You want anything Nico?" Pedro asks as he turns to leave.

"Sure. Bring me back something will ya? I'm gonna stay and practice a bit more. Gotta impress the ladies right?" Nico asks as he smiles earning a scoff from Alexis.

"Right. See ya man." Pedro says as he flies off.

"Great. One of those kinds of birds. Oh shoot." Alexis says as she tries to fly away without being scene only to knock over a piece of metal from the board she was hiding behind.

"Huh? Well hello there beautiful." Nico says as he smiles spotting Alexis.

"Uh hi." Alexis says as Nico flies toward her causing her to back up a bit to keep some distance.

"So couldn't wait to catch a show huh?" Nico asks as he smiles.

"No actually I was just out for a flight. I enjoy admiring the city from the skies." Alexis says shyly.

"It is beautiful huh?" Nico asks as he smiles.

"It is. Yes." Alexis says as she smiles slightly.

"Hey. I know you." Nico says as Alexis gives a nervous look.

"No you don't. I don't really leave my home much. So I'm not sure how you could." Alexis says nervously as she begins to back up.

"No I do. You're Rafael's eldest adopted daughter. Alexis right?" Nico asks curiously.

"How'd you know?" Alexis asks nervously.

"Rafael talks about you a lot. He's quite proud of you. Says you aren't much of a crowd person. Won't say why though." Nico says.

"He's not wrong and I am happy he respects me boundaries." Alexis says as she smiles slightly at the thought of her adoptive father.

"You're pretty aloof aren't you? I guess I'm the lucky one running into such a lovely bird then." Nico says as he chuckles and smiles.

"If you really knew me you wouldn't be so cheery about it." Alexis says as she gives an annoyed look.

"I bet I would." Nico says as he goes closer only for Alexis to back away again.

"No you wouldn't. Trust me on that." Alexis says.

"Why so aloof and non trusting for? I'm not gonna hurt you." Nico says as he gives a disappointed look.

"You might not but others would. If you'll excuse me I need to get back home. Nice meeting you and all but please don't interact with me again." Alexis says before she flies off.

*Timeskip*

"Hey sweetie how was your flight?" Rafael asks as Alexis lands near him.

"Oh hey dad. It was uh nice." Alexis says nervously.

"I ran into Nico a little while ago. Says he ran into you while you were out." Rafael says.

"I did." Alexis says as she looks down.

"Still not up to making new friends that much huh?" Rafael asks as Alexis shakes her head.

"It's just hard dad. You know why too." Alexis says.

"I know sweetheart. You just got to give people a chance. Nico would be a great first start." Rafael says.

"Sorry dad but I think I'm gonna pass this time." Alexis says.

"Alright. But I still have confidence you'll make friends with good birds in the right time." Rafael says as he smiles.

"Thanks." Alexis says as she smiles.

"How about you and I go for a flight? Just the two of us later tonight? It always cheered you up when you were little." Rafael says happily.

"That sounds great dad." Alexis says happily.

"Then it's settled. Now let's go have some dinner." Rafael says as he and Alexis fly up into the tree.
