Not all men are created equal. Izuku Midoriya had learned that from the very beginning. In a world of superpowers and heroes, Izuku was one of the unlucky few in the world to be born without one. His dream of becoming a hero like his idol, Japan's Number One Hero and the Symbol of Peace All Might, were put into the gutter before he had a chance.
But sometimes, a man can overcome these unfair odds. A man can do things they never thought they could do.
A man... can evolve beyond all expectations.
"I-I-I'm warning you Kacchan!" a young Izuku said, trembling as he stood between his former best friend Katsuki, his friends, and their poor victim. "I-I-If you keep being mean, y-you'll be sorry!"
The ash-blond boy stared at Izuku for a moment, before grinning maliciously and making sparks pop from his palms. "Really? You think that someone as lame as you can do anything? You're just a pathetic Quirkless loser, Deku."
Izuku gulped as Katsuki and his friends began to beat him up, though this let the victim escape from them. As soon as Katsuki and his friends got bored, they left Izuku on the ground, beaten and tired. After what felt like hours, he sat up, and rubbed the tears away from his face.
"Stupid Kacchan..." Izuku mumbled. He rubbed the sides of his head, trying to get rid of the headache he got from the beating. "Just because I don't have a Quirk, doesn't mean I'm a loser-"
Izuku grunted as he clutched his head, feeling a sharp pang hitting him in the back of his head. It was a different sort of headache than the one Katsuki and his friends gave him. Whereas the one he was feeling earlier was dull and all over his head, this one felt like a knife stabbing into his head. It ended as quickly as it started, leaving the poor boy confused.
"What... what was that?" he muttered to himself. He sighed, and got up. There wasn't really any time to dwell on that in the first place, he had to get home. Hopefully it won't come back any time soon or anything.
The Next Day, at the same park...
"Hey, Deku!" Katsuki said, approaching Izuku with his friends. Izuku was sitting on one of the swings, looking at the ground. The headache from yesterday hadn't gone away. "I want to use that swing! Get off it, or do I have to teach you another lesson?"
"Oh, hey Kacchan," Izuku grumbled, not bothering to look up. Katsuki raised an eyebrow. "Can... can that wait for a bit? My head hurts."
"Hmph, if you don't want your head to keep hurting, then give me that swing," Katsuki sneered.
"Seriously Kacchan, I just want to think sit down for a bit," Izuku muttered. "You can beat me up later..."
Katsuki scowled, and grabbed Izuku by the collar. "Listen, Deku, I don't know what crawled into your butt, but what it is, better make you get out of that swing and give to-"
"I said later!" Izuku said, shoving Katsuki away. To everyone's surprise, Katsuki skidded across the dirt a good couple meters away. Everyone stared at Izuku, who stared at his hands.
"Did.. did I do that-"
"So it's a fight you want, huh!?" Katsuki shouted, immediately standing up and running at Izuku, palms outstretched. Izuku tried to summon the strange strength again, but found that it wouldn't come back. Soon Katsuki and his friends were kicking Izuku on the ground, who could do nothing but protect his face with his arms.
"You got lucky with that shove, Deku," Katsuki growled, finished sating his appetite for retribution. "Tch, now I'm not in the mood to use the swing, let's go guys."
As Izuku laid in the dirt, he stared up the sky. Just what was with that strength he had seconds ago? Did he really have a Quirk? Or was it really just luck that he managed to shove Katsuki that hard? He didn't have too much time to linger on that thought, as the sharp pang returned with a vengeance.
Several Years Later...
Izuku went over the notes he took in his Hero Journal #13 while he sat at his desk, waiting for his homeroom teacher to come in. That fight between Kamui Woods and that villain was good for observation, but that new heroine Mt. Lady's Quirk was something else. It wasn't every day that you'd see a pro with a gigantification Quirk operate in a city, after all. He wondered about how much of an obstacle that posed to her, since it didn't seem like-
"Okay, kiddos," his homeroom teacher said, sliding the door open while carrying a stack of papers in one arm. The class went silence and paid attention to the front as he dropped the papers onto the teacher's desk. "You're all third-years now, so it's time to start thinking about your futures! I would hand these future career papers out to you all-"
He grasped the stack of papers, before throwing it into the air. "- but I know that you all want to be heroes, right!?"
The class erupted and cheered, as they began showing off their Quirks. "Yes yes, I know that most of you have wonderful Quirks, but remember! This is school, so no Quirk usage allowed!" he said, jokingly scolding them all.
A loud scoff came from the back of the classroom. Everyone turned to stare at Katsuki, who had his feet propped up on his desk. "Ha! Like you can lump me in with these extras and their lame Quirks!"
"Hey! Just because you got a strong Quirk doesn't mean that ours are lame!" one of the students said as others agreed.
"That's right!"
"You're not that great!"
"Well, I hope you can back up that claim, Bakugo," the teacher said. "Since you are aiming to apply to UA, after all."
"UA!?"
"That's the best of the best!"
"He's really going to try and-"
"That's right, you extras!" Katsuki said, standing up and leaping onto his desk. "I aced the mock exam, I got the best grades in our school, and I got the Quirk to back it up! I'm gonna be the best hero there is! Not even All Might could stop me-"
"Oh yea, you're applying to UA too, right Midoriya?" the teacher said offhandedly. All of the students' attention moved to Izuku, who shrunk back in his desk. Silence permeated throughout the room before everyone erupted into mocking laughter.
"Seriously!? A Quirkless kid like you at UA!?"
"Maybe if they're looking for new janitors!"
"You'd get eaten alive, even in the General Studies Course!"
"Good grades won't save you in the Hero Course!"
"T-There's nothing wrong with applying, right!?" Izuku defended, looking at everyone. "It's not like there's a rule that Quirkless people can't apply-"
"Give me a fucking break, Deku!" Katsuki shouted, slamming his hands onto Izuku's desk and causing it to explode. "You think you can rub shoulders with me!? You're even worse than these extras! You can't do a damn thing without a Quirk!"
"I-I wouldn't imagine it, Kacchan!" Izuku said, holding his hands up. "I-I just- AGH!"
Izuku clutched his head, the sharp pang stabbing him in the head once again. The class stared at him and rolled their eyes at the sight.
"Again, Midoriya?" the teacher sighed, shaking his head. "So soon into class?"
"I-I'm sorry, these headaches just come randomly and-" Izuku mumbled, rubbing his head.
"Whatever, just go to the nurse's office like usual. Everyone else, let's get back to class," the teacher said dismissively, waving Izuku off. The green-haired teen sighed and got up, walking to the door.
"Man, what a freak."
"If being Quirkless didn't get in his way, having those stupid headaches will."
"He'd be lucky if he survived the written exams."
Katsuki scowled as he went back to his seat. He's going to have to remind that Quirkless loser of his place again. And no chronic headache is going to save him from that lesson.
Downtown Mustafu
"Out of my way, unless you wanna die!" a sludge-like villain cried out, as he ran down the sidewalk, cash registers in his sludgy tendrils. People jumped out of the way, trying to avoid the villain, except for one black-haired man with a short beard covering his chin, carrying groceries in his hands. "Move it, jackass!"
The pedestrian kept walking however, almost without a care in the world. "Your funeral, asshole-!"
All of a sudden, the pedestrian had managed to sidestep the villain at the last possible second, only to resume his stride as if uninterrupted. For some reason, the sludge villain shuddered for a split second, but kept on running. "What was that all about!?" he thought to himself.
"Hm, another day, another villain it seems," the man said, shrugging as he turned to glance at the retreating villain. "No real end to them all, is there-"
"Yes there is," a booming voice said. The man turned to look at his left, and saw a blond goliath, whose bangs stuck up into the air as if they were rabbit ears. "Because, I AM HERE!"
The goliath sped off, chasing after the sludge villain, as bystanders stepped out of the way and stared at the hero. The man smiled a bit and shrugged.
"Of course it would be him," the man said to himself. "After all, he's one of the strongest heroes around."
Aldera Junior High
Izuku sighed as he grabbed his bag at the end of the day. Thankfully his headache disappeared after resting at the nurse's office for a bit and taking some aspirin. Still, it was frustrating to deal with. Ever since that day at the park, he's been having these headaches randomly. The only connecting factor that Izuku and his mom figured was that they often occurred whenever he was stressed. Which unfortunately had become more common for him each passing year, having to deal with the bullying, the teachers dismissing his concerns, the Quirklessness, his mocked dreams. All of it was stressful, but despite having them all the time, the sharp pang was always as strong as it was the first time. Nevertheless, he couldn't let that keep him down.
"I better get back and check over my notes-" Izuku said, picking his blue Campus notebook up, ready to pack it when Katsuki snatched it out of his hands. "H-Hey!"
"Hero Journal #13? What, you stalking heroes and hoping their Quirk rubs off onto you?" Katsuki sneered, as the class stared and snickered at the scene.
"G-Give it back!" Izuku said, standing up. The sharp pang returned, but he shoved it aside.
"Or what?" Katsuki said, raising his hands to clap on the notebook to make it explode. "You-"
For whatever reason, instinct took over Izuku, and he shoved Katsuki. The ash blond teen flew across the room, knocking desks and chairs over as he landed against the teacher's desk. He had dropped the blue Campus notebook in shock, not just at having been knocked back forcefully, but by Izuku of all people.
Everyone froze, as if time stood still. Izuku trembled, and snatched his notebook from the ground. He ran out of the classroom, desperate to get out of the school.
"... DEEEEEEKUUUUUUU!" Katsuki screeched, his brain finally catching up to him. "I'M GOING TO MAKE YOU REGRET BEING BORN!"
Izuku took several deep breaths, having managed to make it to an underpass far away from school (and away from his usual route as well). He stared at his trembling hands, his Hero Journal shaking with each tremor.
"What... what was that?" he asked himself. "It was like that day at the park... Just how did I-"
"Hey kid," a voice said from behind. Izuku turned, and a sludge villain began shoving himself into the teen's throat. "Thanks for the body! Don't worry, this won't hurt long!"
Izuku struggled against the sludge villain, clawing at the dirty slime entering his throat. He couldn't die like this. Not now. As tears filled the boy's eyes, the sharp pang stabbed him in the head, and he shut his eyes tightly in pain.
"Get out of me!" Izuku shouted. All of a sudden, the sludge that had gotten into him flew out of his mouth and throat. The villain was sent flying back into the underpass's wall, splattering against it. He stared at the green-haired boy in shock, before chuckling sinisterly.
"That's a powerful telekinesis Quirk you got!" he said, his cool returning. "I could use that before-"
"You won't be using anything today!" a booming voice cried out from a nearby manhole. The cover shot up into the air and embedded itself into the underpass's ceiling. Izuku and the sludge villain stared as a muscular blond man leaped out of the manhole, and the green-haired teen couldn't believe what he was seeing.
It was the Number One Hero, All Might.
"Because I AM HERE!"
"Shit shit shit shit shitshitshit-" the sludge villain panicked, turning around to get away. But it was too late.
"Texas SMAAAAAASH!" the pro shouted, rearing his right arm back and throwing it forward, releasing a punch so powerful that it created a blast of air. The sludge villain yelled as his body was forcefully splattered everywhere, knocking him out. Izuku stood there, dumbfounded by the mere sight of the giant man. "Hahaha! Seems like I made it just in time, young man! Are you alright?"
"Y-Y-Yes I'm alright-!" Izuku stuttered, when he coughed up a little bit of sludge that was still inside him (and today's lunch), and he clutched his head as the sharp pang came back.
"Here, have some ginger ale! It's my favorite brand!" All Might laughed, pulling out a couple of ginger ale. "Honestly, with all the times I've bought this brand, I don't know why I haven't asked them to be their spokesman! Hahaha!"
"T-Thank you, sir!" Izuku said, opening the bottles and downing them both. "I-I'm a huge fan of you, Mr. All Might sir, you're a big inspiration and I-I-I-"
"You want my autograph?" All Might said, as Izuku nodded vigorously as he pulled out Hero Journal #13 and a pen and handed it to the Number One Hero. "I don't see why not! Now, who am I making this out to?"
"I-Izuku Midoriya, sir!"
"Izuku Midoriya... what a fine name for a young man like yourself!" All Might said, handing the notebook back to Izuku. Izuku stared at the autograph, his eyes shining with excitement as he thanked the man profusely. "Now... how to take this villain to the proper authorities... Ah! These now empty bottle should do it!"
All Might grabbed the two empty ginger ale bottles, and in a flash, scooped the sludge villain into them and twisted the caps shut. "There, that should make taking him there no problem! Now, I best be off, young man, take care!"
Izuku snapped out of his stupor, and looked at the Number One Hero. He was leaving already? But he had so much to ask. So many questions, so many thoughts.
But there was one question he needed answered the most.
As All Might prepared to leap into the air, Izuku grabbed his leg, and clung on tight to him as he flew into the air.
"Whoa whoa whoa whoa! I love enthusiastic fans, but this a little bit too much, even for me!" All Might said, looking down and feeling the tight grasp Izuku had around his leg.
"I-I'm sorry, All Might sir! B-But I have something important to ask you! Something I've been wanting to ask for a long, long time!" Izuku said.
"Alright, I'll answer one question, but that'll be it! I must take this villain to the station after all!" All Might said, as he looked around for a rooftop to land on. He coughed into his hand, and wiped away the trickle of blood that came out of the corner of his mouth.
Somewhere, Down at the Streets
"Man, who knew that Deku had the balls to shove you like that?" one of Katsuki's cronies said, as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
"Yea, didn't think he'd even have the strength," another said, as the smoke drifted from his.
"That worthless lying bastard," Katsuki growled, kicking away a discarded soda bottle out of his way. "Had he been holding back his Quirk this entire time?"
"Maybe, who knows? Seems weird to me to lie about not having a Quirk, though-"
"Shut it, like I asked you ingrates anything!" Katsuki barked. He snatched the cigarette box out of his crony's hands, and exploded it between his palms. "And how many times do I have to tell you jackasses to not smoke when I'm around you!? If I get caught with you both smoking, it'll go on my record, too!"
"Sorry, Baku-" the crony replied, when a large shadow loomed over the ash-blond boy.
"Hey kid," the sludge villain said, as Katsuki turned around. "Mind if I borrow your body!?"
On a rooftop
"Alright, go ahead and ask your question! But after that, I must go!" All Might said, tapping his foot impatiently as Izuku took deep breaths, anxiety grabbing his heart.
"Y-Yes! Of course!" Izuku said, shaking his head. "I... I..."
Izuku gulped, the words stuck in his throat. He knew what the answer would be. But maybe, just maybe...
"I... I want to know! Is it possible to become a hero without a Quirk!?"
"Hm?" All Might said, raising an eyebrow, when he felt a tingle going throughout his body. "Oh no, not now!"
"All my life, everyone's picked on me for wanting to be a hero, even though I'm Quirkless... but still, I want to be a hero... a hero just like you!" Izuku said, not noticing that steam was coming off of All Might's body. "I want to be a hero that saves everyone with a smile! That brings hope every time I appear! I... I want to be a Symbol of Peace just like you-"
All of a sudden, a cloud of steam burst from All Might's body, startling Izuku.
"Wh-Wha!? All Might, are you alriIIIIIIGHT!?" Izuku said, waving his hands around to clear the steam away, when he was greeted by the sight of a tall, thin skeleton of a man in All Might's clothes. "WHO ARE YOU!?"
"... I'm All Might," the man said, coughing up a bit and a trickle of blood spilling out of his mouth.
"Wh-What!?"
"Oh um... it's like this, uh... you know those guys at the pool who suck their gut in to look buff? That's what I do."
"R-Really!?"
"Yea," All Might sighed, as he sat down onto the ground. "Well, if you want an answer to your question, I guess I should show you why I look like this now. Don't go online and say anything about it on forums or social media, would you? Can't have the public know the Number One Hero's in this sort of state."
All Might lifted the bottom hem of his shirt up, and Izuku covered his mouth to avoid throwing up whatever remained in his stomach.
"Gnarly, huh?" All Might said. "I don't blame you. Feels as bad as it looks. Five years ago, I got injured in a fight against a villain. He hit me hard, but I hit him even harder. But that fight took a lot out of me, figuratively and literally. I lost parts of my stomach, parts of my lungs... basically my digestive and respiratory systems are shot. All the surgeries to keep me going made me wither away into what you see in front of you now. It's gotten to the point where I can only work for three hours."
"N-No way... wait, was it the fight with Toxic Chainsaw?"
"Huh, you know your stuff. No, this fight was kept under wraps by my decision," All Might sighed, shaking his head. "So that the public wouldn't panic over the thought that there was a villain strong enough to reduce the Number One Hero, the Symbol of Peace, into this."
Izuku gulped. It was true, the thought that there was someone that was strong enough to do that to All Might...
"Still, something like a Symbol of Peace can never be daunted by villains of any kind. Those smiles you see me make? Nowadays, I make them so that I can fight off against the overwhelming pressure and fear I feel. And... and being Quirkless? I don't think it's at all possible," All Might said, seeming to struggle with the last few words as he stood up and walked to the roof entrance. "If you wish to help people, think about becoming a police officer. It might not be as flashy, but it's honest and valuable work."
All Might stopped before opening the door. "... It's okay to dream, young man, but you also have to think realistically."
Izuku stood there, frozen at All Might's words. Even the Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace thought it was impossible. He knew deep in his heart that it was true, but-
"AAAAGH!" Izuku cried out, clutching his head and balling up onto the ground. The sharp pang struck again, only this time it was far more intense than before. The pang felt like it was hitting every possible spot it could reach of his head.
"Y-Young man, are you alright?" All Might said, caught off guard by the screaming. He walked up to the teen to check on him. "I-I think this is a little bit dramatic for what I said-"
"N-No, it's alright," Izuku muttered, rubbing his head. "It's... I've been having chronic headaches for a long time now, since I was diagnosed with Quirklessness. My mom and I talked to a lot of doctors, and the closest explanation is that it's stress-induced..."
"I see..." All Might said, rubbing his chin in thought. "I'm sorry if what I said was stressful, but believe me when I say that it's out of concern. Sometimes you have to understand your limits."
"Y... yea..." Izuku mumbled. "Thanks All Might... If you don't mind, I think I'll just sit here for a while..."
All Might sighed, and walked back to the entrance. "I'm not kidding when I say to consider becoming police officer. I have some friends who're officers, and they're some of the best people I know."
With those final words, All Might walked into the entrance and closed the door. Once Izuku heard the door shut, he finally let out more sobs. That was it. The final confirmation that his dream...
Was dead.
All Might took a glance back every so often before reaching the bottom of the stairwell. It wasn't like he really wanted to tell Izuku that his dream couldn't be reached. In fact, he related to the teen quite well on that, since he was lucky and his mentor passed down One for All to him. But he couldn't just hand it down like that, to some fan he just met that day. Besides, he had to meet Mirai and that protégé of his that he's been talking about-
"But first let's get this guy to the station-" All Might said, reaching into his empty pocket-
His empty pocket.
All Might patted himself down, trying to find the bottles that the sludge villain had been contained in. He couldn't have-
An explosion went off a few blocks away, and All Might went pale. He rushed out of the building, and ran to the source.
"Hahahahaha! What a great Quirk you have, kid!" the sludge villain shouted, as he slung off explosion after explosion. Fire engulfed the buildings, cars erupted into flames, windows shattered everywhere. "Way better than that kid with the telekinetic Quirk! I can take on All Might with this!"
"Get the fuck off me!" Katsuki garbled, trying his best to spit the sludge villain out, though the villain would keep shoving himself in. As a crowd gathered around the scene, All Might snuck up from the back. Despite missing parts of his lungs, he was still an excellent runner.
"No..." he thought, watching the scene unfold with the sludge villain and nearby heroes. None of them could get close. Kamui Woods couldn't do anything, the explosions would set his arms and legs on fire, so he was relegated to saving civilians that were caught up in everything. Backdraft was busy putting out all of the fires since the firefighters hadn't arrived yet. Mt. Lady was too big to walk past the buildings. "This is all my fault! If only I was more vigilant! If only I wasn't- No, it's not that young man's fault! All he wanted was reassurance... reassurance that I couldn't even give him... Dammit, what can I do!?"
Nearby, the black-haired man with bags of groceries came to a stop and watched the chaos unfold, and eyed the skeletal All Might. "Hm, seems like that sludge man was slipperier than I thought. And All Might seems to have ran out of time for today," he thought. "Wish I could do something, but rules are rules."
Izuku sighed as he walked absentmindedly down the street, finally having cried out all his tears and 'calming' down enough to get onto an elevator to leave the building. He didn't get why he was so upset. He knew in his heart that his dream was out of his reach. Everyone told him that. And now he could add All Might to that list.
An explosion went off a block away from where he was walking, and there was a giant crowd of people near a square.
"I guess there's a villain attacking..." Izuku mumbled, as he dragged himself to watch the heroes fight, pushing himself to the front. "... I don't know why I'm bothering anymore, not like any amount of observations will help-"
Izuku froze and saw the sludge villain wrecking havoc in the square. He slung very familiar explosions around, igniting cars and burning buildings. Heroes tried to get close, but the explosions and wild movement forced them to keep their distance.
"No... no no no! All Might must've dropped the bottles when I grabbed his leg! This is all my fault!" Izuku thought, sweating and trembling. "And- And he's got Kacchan, too! If it weren't for me, he wouldn't suffering like me! What- What- What can I-"
For a brief moment, Izuku and Katsuki locked eyes with each other, and the green-haired teen saw the fear in his former friend's eyes. The sharp pang returned and stabbed Izuku in the head, but this time, his mind almost drew to a blank. His eyelids drooped down and his breathing grew heavy, as if he were in a trance. He went past the heroes and barricades, and strode on towards the sludge villain and Katsuki.
"What the- HEY! Get back here kid!" one of the heroes, Death Arms, shouted. He went to grab Izuku by the shoulder, but to his surprise, the teen had managed to slip through his large hands. "Wha-"
"This is dangerous get-" another hero cried, trying to bearhug Izuku, but like Death Arms, Izuku slipped through his grip.
"Stop right now-" Kamui Woods commanded, growing branches off of his arm to catch Izuku. Izuku simply sidestepped the branches, and continued on towards the villain. Every attempt the heroes made to stop Izuku's slow stride failed to stop him, to their frustrations and surprise.
"What's with that kid!?" one of the bystanders said, as everyone watched Izuku.
"Oh no, not a young Agito this time," the black-haired man thought, closing his eyes and sighing. "I'll let some other Lord handle this, I'm on break, not to mention I don't deal with kids... Still, I wonder..."
"It's that kid again..." the sludge villain said, watching Izuku approaching him. "... What the hell is he doing?"
"Deku!?" Katsuki garbled, aghast that he of all people was coming close.
"What is Young Midoriya doing!?" All Might thought, his jaw dropped.
As Izuku drew closer, something strange happened. A red belt with a large black buckle and a yellow gem appeared around his waist, and with it, came golden yellow bracers around his forearms and ankles, a black beetle-like shell on his back. What was more startling was that his face gained some sort of insectoid mask, with glowing red eyes and a mandible-like mouth plate, which looked out of place with his mossy green hair.
"The hell!?" the sludge villain and Katsuki said in sync. Izuku paid no mind to them, to the stunned heroes, or to the bystanders. He finally broke out into a run, charging at the sludge villain. The sludge villain slung out his/Katsuki's right arm to fire an explosion into Izuku's face, but to his surprise, he used his left arm to push it away. The insectoid teen threw a punch with his right hand, slugging the sludge villain right in his left eye.
"AAAAAAAARGH! You fucking brat!" the sludge villain said, as Izuku dug into the grime and began trying to pull out Katsuki.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, Deku!?" Katsuki barked. "I have this under control!"
Izuku did not respond to his words, and only continued to dig to pull him out. "Hey! Say something, you fucking weirdo!"
The sludge villain regained his composure from having his eyeball punched, and narrowed in onto Izuku as he pulled Katsuki deeper into him. He raised his arms up, ready to slam them into the green-haired insectoid teen. "I'll make sure you regret-"
"There'll be no regrets, today, villain!" All Might shouted, having appeared almost out of nowhere. He blocked the attack with his forearm, before grabbing Katsuki and Izuku, pulling them away from the sludge villain. "I should thank you kid, for reminding me of something- That heroes have to face danger head on, and put their backs into it!"
"Aw fu-"
"DETROIT SMAAAAAAASH!" All Might shouted, throwing his fist down to the ground. The wind pressure from his punch was so immense, that the sludge villain instantly splattered everywhere. Clouds began forming over the city, and rain fell down, drenching the fires around them.
"Holy shit, his punch changed the weather!" one of the bystanders said.
"Yea, but that dumbass kid could've made things worse!"
"What's with that Quirk, anyways? I've never seen an insect transformation type like that before."
"Whoever he is, he's going to get the book thrown at him, hard."
"Alright, with that over, what were you thinking, young-" All Might said, prepared to scold Izuku, when the strange armor and mask disappeared in a flash of light. The green-haired teen fell over onto the ground, out cold. "H-Hey! Young man!" All Might said, kneeling down to the unconscious Izuku, as other heroes and paramedics rushed to their side. In the panic of things, the man stared on at them.
"That kid's just on the cusp of fully awakening," the man thought, shaking his head. "He won't have a lot of time to prepare himself when another Lord comes around... Still, I wonder-"
The man took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, tuning out the world as he focused onto Izuku. Soon, he began to hear the unconscious teen's subconscious thoughts.
"Save him-"
"I can't let anyone else suffer-"
"I want to be a hero who saves everyone with a smile, and comfort them with my laugh."
The man opened his eyes, and rubbed his chin, impressed. It's been a long time since he's heard such earnest thoughts. Usually when he read a subconscious like that, they were more about self-preservation and personal desires. Even some of the most outwardly kind people had some selfish thoughts. Though maybe being a hero was the boy's selfish desire, and if it was, it was certainly the least self-serving desire he's ever seen. Not a lot of modern Agitos were like that; most suffered from power highs before being killed.
It was worth keeping an eye on this kid. At least before one of the other Lords get to him.
Hours Later...
Izuku rubbed his eyes and sat up. He looked around, and found himself in a hospital room for some reason. "When... when did I get here?"
His eyes fell onto the door, and he heard voices outside of it. "Okay ma'am, you may see your son now. He might not be awake yet, however-" a doctor said, opening the door. "Oh, never mind, he is."
"Izukuuuuuuuuu!" his mother, Inko, yelled, running up to him and giving him a tight hug. "I was so worried! I got a call from the hospital, and the police, and I saw the news! What were you thinking!?"
"What? I- Uh, what do you mean?" Izuku said, raising an eyebrow, when he clutched his head. "Agh, my head... I- Wait! What about Kacchan!? Is he alright!? Did someone save him!?"
"Katsuki is fine, but you don't need to worry about him!" Inko said, hugging him even tighter. "I was so scared when I saw you walk towards that villain! What were you thinking!?"
"I walked towards the villain?" Izuku asked, rubbing his head. "When did that happen?"
"You don't remember?" Inko said, letting go finally to look at her son's face. "Doctor, did you-"
"Yes, yes, we checked for head injuries," the doctor assured her, looking through the clipboard. "From his medical records, he's been having chronic stress-induced headaches, right? Perhaps this time around the stress of the situation was strong enough to cause some memory loss."
"That's the first time that's ever happened to me, though..." Izuku said.
"Hm... and it says here that you're Quirkless?" the doctor said, flipping through the clipboard papers. "Did you misregister that?"
"What? Misregister? I am Quirkless," Izuku said. "What are you talking about-"
"Hahahaha! I am here! To talk to a young man!" All Might said, laughing as he peeked into Izuku's room.
"A-A-All Might!?" Inko said, trembling at the presence of the Symbol of Peace. Izuku grimaced, and looked down at his feet.
"Indeed! And I assume that you're Young Midoriya's mother?" All Might said, entering the room. "What a beautiful mother for a handsome young man!"
"T-Thank you, Mr. All Might sir," Inko said, giving him a polite bow.
"If it's alright with you, ma'am, I would like to speak to your son in private," All Might said. "I promise that it won't take long."
"I-If this is about my son rushing in, I want to-"
"It isn't. You see, I meet your son a bit earlier today and gave him my autograph!" All Might explained. "I simply want to give him a moment of my time since I couldn't earlier."
"A-Alright," Inko said, turning to Izuku. "Isn't this fantastic, Izuku? You're getting to talk to All Might!"
"Y-Yea, it is," Izuku said, nervously. After Inko and the doctor left the room and shut the door, All Might made sure that there was no way anyone could peek into the room, and released his muscle form.
"Oh boy, this is a relief," All Might said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Now then, what I said earlier today-"
"I-I know, I can't be a hero-"
"Why did you lie to me about being Quirkless?"
"Huh?" Izuku said, looking up at All Might.
"It's alright, young man, I'm not mad. In fact, I should apologize for saying that to you, I'm just wondering why you would lie about something like that. Otherwise I wouldn't have said what I did," All Might said. "It was reckless of you to show off like that, but-"
"I-I didn't lie! I am Quirkless!" Izuku said, before clutching his head as the headache came back. "Agh, dangit..."
"Young man, you don't need to lie, everyone saw-"
"Saw what?" Izuku asked, massaging his right temple. "I... I can't remember anything after seeing Kacchan being held hostage by that sludge villain."
"Kacchan- ah, the young man that you helped," All Might said, rubbing his chin in thought before pulling out his smartphone. "I suppose the stress of the situation was intense for you. Luckily, some people were filming with their smartphones and there was a cameraman around. Though they picked some rather unflattering titles to use for you."
He tapped away on his smartphone, and found one of the online videos he was looking for, 'Dumbass Bug Boy Almost Kills Himself'. He pressed play and showed Izuku, his eyes growing wider as he watched himself walk past all of the heroes trying to grab him before seeing a red belt form around his waist, gold bracers and anklets around his wrists and ankles, and some sort of beetle-like shell on his back. He couldn't see it very well, but he managed to catch glimpses of his face, which was covered in some sort of mask with red bug-like eyes and gold and silver mandibles.
"How did that happen!?" Izuku said, as he replayed the video over and over again. "What is this!? That can't be me!"
"So you really can't remember anything, huh?" All Might said. "And you swear that you're telling the truth?"
"Y-Yes! All my life I've been Quirkless! I don't know what any of this is!" Izuku said. On one hand, he was glad that he has a Quirk now. On the other hand, just what exactly is it? It couldn't be anything from his father's side or his mother's side, no one has a bug Quirk like this. And he should know, he combed through every single family document and history to try and find out if he could get some sort of Quirk that skipped a generation or two. And he was undoubtedly his father's and mother's son, he got the DNA tests to prove so. "Just... just what is this!?"
All Might shivered. If Izuku was telling the truth about being Quirkless, and he had no idea about this insectoid transformation Quirk, then could it be the work of-
A knock came from the door, and in an instant, All Might buffed up, making sure that no one would see him in his weakened state.
"Hello?" a voice said on the other side. "I'm Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi, I'm here to ask a few questions. I already have permission from Mrs. Midoriya to do so."
"Oh, it's Tsukauchi," All Might said, instantly relaxing. He opened the door, and let the detective inside.
"Hello, there, sir," Tsukauchi said, lifting his cap up. "I hope I wasn't-"
"It's alright, Tsukauchi," All Might said, waving him off. "The boy already saw me earlier in this state."
"Really? You're usually good about keeping this a secret," Tsukauchi said, crossing his arms.
"It's... a long story," All Might said, rubbing the back of his head. "I assume this is private police business? I guess I should show myself out, then. May I borrow your phone?"
All Might took a deep breath, and buffed up as Izuku looked over to the side and picked his bag up to pull out his phone, handing it to All Might, who gently tapped away on it. "I'll talk with you more later, Young Midoriya! There is still much I would like to discuss! But let me tell you this, young man."
He lowered himself to look Izuku straight in the eye. "You reminded me of the reason why I became a hero. To help others, even if it seems like the odds are against me. Quirkless or not, you have the heart of a hero, and I think that you have something special in you."
Izuku stared at the Symbol of Peace, who gave him a big smile. "Now then, I must be off! Take care, Young Midoriya! And recover well!"
With that, All Might rushed out of the room, closing the door behind him.
"Hm, always leaving in a flash, that guy," Detective Tsukauchi said, as he pulled a chair over to Izuku's bedside and pulled out a notepad and pen. "Well, I suppose we should get down to the questions."
Soon enough, Tsukauchi frisked Izuku for information about his involvement, about his relation with Katsuki, about himself, until-
"So can you explain your transformation Quirk?" Detective Tsukauchi asked.
"I don't have a transformation Quirk," Izuku said. "At least, I don't think I do..."
Detective Tsukauchi took another look at Izuku. "What do you mean you don't think so?"
"I've been Quirkless my entire life," Izuku explained. "I don't... I don't know what happened there. I've seen the video, but I don't remember a thing. And no one in my family has a Quirk like that. My mom has a minor telekinesis Quirk, and my dad has a fire-breathing Quirk."
Detective Tsukauchi tapped his pen against his notepad. His Lie Detecting Quirk wasn't reacting to what Izuku said, so he's telling the truth. At least, he's telling what he believes is the truth. Sometimes people can deceive his Quirk by fully and wholly believing in the thing they're saying, or if it's 'technically' true. Though something about this feels... familiar. As if he's read something about a case like this before.
"Hm... so you don't remember anything after you went pass the hero blockade?"
"Yes. All I remember is seeing Kacchan in trouble, that he looked scared, and... and that sharp pang struck me again. Next thing I know, I'm here."
"Right right, your chronic stress headaches," Detective Tsukauchi said, flipping back to the page he wrote that down on. "Can you activate your Quirk now?"
Izuku shut his eyes and focused as hard as he could, his muscles tensing up and his fists balling up as he struggled to. "... No, it doesn't seem like it."
"I see... Well, in any case, since you're a minor, and if what you did wasn't of your own conscious volition is true and you don't have memories of the event, worst thing I can do is hand you a warning about unauthorized Quirk use and interfering with hero business. I can't do anything about public reception of you, unfortunately."
"R... right..." Izuku said, his eyes falling down to the foot of his bed. "Will... will this affect my application to UA's Hero Course?"
"Huh? UA's Hero Course? You were trying to apply there despite being Quirkless?"
"I know that's weird, but... it's always been my dream to be a hero like All Might. If I didn't try, I would've regretted it for the rest of my life... but now that I have a Quirk, I think, that gives me a better chance, right? But after today..."
"Hm... that'll depend on the school itself, I'm afraid," Detective Tsukauchi admitted. "But if I know anything about UA and its staff, there's a chance you can get in."
"I... I see..." Izuku said.
"Well, in any case, I suppose I should leave you alone for now to rest. I'll keep in touch just in case," Detective Tsukauchi said, scratching down his contact information on his notepad and tearing it out to hand to Izuku, before putting his pen and notepad away and standing up. "I hope you'll have a pleasant evening, Mr. Midoriya."
"Thank you, you too, Detective Tsukauchi, sir," Izuku replied, giving the man a polite bow. As the man left, he turned and saw Izuku's mother and the doctor talking.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Midoriya?" Detective Tsukauchi said, startling the short pudgy woman. "Before I go, I want to confirm something with you."
"O-oh! Of course, detective! What is it?"
"Your son, Izuku, he told me that he was Quirkless. Is that really the case?"
"Y-Yes, he was diagnosed with Quirkless when he was 4," Inko said, sadly recalling the day they found out. "After all of his classmates had developed their Quirks but he didn't, even weeks after his birthday. We went to the doctor, and he gave us the news."
"And you're certain that this isn't a Quirk?"
"N-no! No one in my family or my husband's has an insectoid transformation Quirk! There was never any sign of- well, maybe, but..."
"But what?"
"A few weeks after that day, Izuku began to have chronic stress headaches. We have no idea why he gets them, even now."
"Hm... If it's alright with you, I would like to see his medical records to confirm what you and your son have told me," Detective Tsukauchi said.
"I-It's alright with me," Inko said.
"Alright then, if that's the case, just follow me and I'll get you your copies," the doctor there said, motioning them to follow him.
Later that Night
Izuku kept replaying all of the videos he found online about what happened today, examining it all from different angles. It was unbelievable, to see him just walk past all of those heroes somehow, and then develop those insectoid features. Just what was it? Why did this happen? Were his headaches related to this? Why now of all times? He and his family went and did all sorts of Quirk tests to see if he actually could get one, and every single one confirmed that he wouldn't develop a Quirk ever. He flexed his fingers, trying to transform once again. Each time failing to do so.
His hands trembled as he watched the videos over and over and over and over. His once impossible dreams, now just within reach. But all the same, questions kept filling his head.
Questions that had to wait, because his phone's messenger app alerted him. He opened it, and saw that it was from a Toshinori Yagi.
Hello Young Midoriya, how are you doing?, the message said.
Who is this?, Izuku typed, worried how a stranger got his contact information.
It's me, AM, the stranger replied. Izuku gasped, figuring out that 'AM' must mean All Might. This was the first time he's ever heard of All Might's real name. Usually he kept that a secret, as a holdover from the early days when heroes kept their identities under wraps. Another message appeared.
I took the liberty of looking up at your contact information while I put mine in. I'm sorry if I startled you otherwise. But I want to meet up with you once you're discharged and have free time. Is that alright?
Of course!, Izuku answered. What do you want to talk about?
I can't say online, since someone might go through these messages, All Might replied. But it's important, and could potentially help you with your dreams of becoming a hero.
Izuku froze. All Might wants to help him with becoming a hero. Sure, the man almost crushed them today, but he changed his mind. Though... was it because he suddenly developed a Quirk? Would he have wanted to help him if he was still Quirkless? He shook his head. If All Might wants to talk to him about something important, he'll ask those questions then.
Of course, sir, Izuku replied. I'm free anytime after 3 at school on the weekdays, bur the doctors want to keep me here for observation because of my sudden Quirk manifestation for a couple of days.
Alright, then meet me at Dagobah Beach around 5 when you're out of the hospital and done with school, All Might said.
Dagobah Beach? That makes sense, that place is garbage central thanks to the currents moving trash onto it and people illegally dumping their trash into it. No one visits that place, so it was perfect for a secret meeting.
Okay, I'll see you there, sir.
Might Tower, All Might's Private Office
"Have you lost your mind, All Might!?" a bespectacled man said over a private secured video call. "You just met this boy and you want to hand him your power!?"
"Is it any different from meeting your own protégé, Nighteye?" All Might asked, sighing. He had expected that Sir Nighteye wouldn't have approve of this. He was the one who suggested picking a successor from UA, after all, and from what he heard, Sir Nighteye's intern is a perfect candidate.
"It's a thousands times more different! Mirio has been training for two years now, and he's the perfect candidate! This boy hasn't even entered high school!"
"Don't worry, Mirai, I'm just going to ask him," All Might said, attempting to assure his former sidekick. "If he says no, then I'll meet Young Togata-"
"But he'll know! He already knows about your injury, are you seriously considering-"
"Nighteye, I appreciate the concern, I truly do, but in the end, this is my decision," All Might said firmly. "If Young Midoriya says no, then I'll ask Young Togata."
"... Fine, but I still think that you're making a big mistake doing this," Sir Nighteye sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "All I want to do is make sure that your legacy lives on, and Mirio is the best one to carry it."
"I know... thank you, Nighteye," All Might said, as they both hung up. The skeletal Number One Hero pinched his forehead. He really hated to do this to his former sidekick and this Mirio that was interning under him. But meeting Izuku, being told he was Quirkless... reminded him of himself. Granted, he turned out not to be Quirkless, even to his own surprise (the headaches sound like a pain, he could relate to having constant pain). Still, everyone should be given a chance, right? And Izuku had proven himself that he deserved it.
Mustafu Police Station
"Detective Tsukauchi sir, what're you still doing here?" a rookie detective asked, seeing Tsukauchi still at his desk, papers strewn across as the senior detective typed away on his laptop. "I thought you would've left by now."
"I'm just doing a little reading, Hikawa," Tsukauchi said, as the rookie picked one of the papers up. "Something about the Sludge Villain Incident today stuck out to me after I talked to the green-haired kid that walked past the heroes, and I was certain I read something familiar about it in an old case file."
"An old unsolved murder case in Nakano?" Hikawa said. "What would a 15 year old murder case have anything to do with today?"
"That's the thing," Tsukauchi answered. "The victim in that case also had an insectoid transformation Quirk."
"Is it that odd? There's all sorts of Quirks that're similar to each other-"
"It's not that, it's that the victim was also registered as Quirkless. Apparently he suddenly developed a transformation Quirk out of nowhere days before he was found murdered in his home," Tsukauchi said. "Same with the kid today, he spontaneously developed a similar transformation Quirk."
"Really? You think it might be some sort of late life manifestation? Those are rare..."
"It's precisely why that's got me curious." He typed on his keyboard, and found some more old case files. "With how rare late life Quirk manifestations are, it can't be a coincidence, right? And they're both transformation types, too."
"I suppose so..." Hikawa muttered. "Well, in any case, hope you'll find something good, sir."
"Thanks, Hikawa," Tsukauchi replied, absentmindedly. He scrolled through some of the old case files, having searched case files with bug-related keywords. "Let's see... huh? A case about a 'bug man' and 'monster' sighting... over 300 years ago? That's impossible, Quirks didn't start appearing until at least 160 years ago... Wait a minute-"
Tsukauchi began scrolling and speed reading through all of the case files from that time period. He kept finding older and older cases about similar bug men and monster sightings, well up to the 1980s, definitely way before Quirks started to appear. In most cases, these sightings also lined up with someone dying nearby within the same period of time (often in very gruesome ways that should've been impossible in pre-Quirk times). But the descriptions of these bug men were all the same-
"Red eyes... black skin... golden carapace-like armor and horns... and a red belt?" Tsukauchi said. He pulled up the video from today, and looked at Izuku's transformation once again. He matched the description, though he lacked the horns and his skin hadn't turned black (Izuku's must not be fully developed yet). Still, something like this had to mean something.
"If what he was saying is true and that wasn't a Quirk... then what is it?"
Aldera Junior High, A Few Days Later
After being discharged from the hospital, Izuku grimaced as he prepared to walk into the courtyard. As expected, everyone there was staring at him, no doubt because of what happened with the Sludge Villain Incident as the media called it (others online called it far more unflattering things, mostly along the lines of the 'Dumbass Bug Boy' Incident). It's hard not to see why, the school's resident Quirkless kid suddenly developing an insectoid transformation Quirk out of nowhere was definitely unbelievable. He had been trying to activate the transformation again under the doctors' observations, but no matter how much he tried, he-
"DEKUUUUUUUUUUU!"
Izuku froze and turned and saw Katsuki stomping towards him. "H-Hey, Kacchan, are you alright-"
"What the hell was that bullshit you pulled back there!?" Katsuki yelled, grabbing Izuku by the collar. "Not only did I never ask for your pathetic help, but you've been lying about being Quirkless all this time!? Have you been looking down on me this entire time!?"
"N-No, I really don't know how that happened, I actually don't even remember it-"
"Stop lying! If you think I'm a big enough idiot-"
"Alright, that's enough," the principal said, walking out of the doors upon seeing the commotion. "Listen Bakugo, you're one of our star students and the school day hasn't started, so I'll let this slide. Midoriya, if you cause trouble again, you will be punished. Your little 'hero act' the other day might give our school a bad reputation, so you're on thin ice."
"Yes sir," Izuku and Katsuki said at the same time (Katsuki through gritted teeth). Once the principal walked away, the ash-blond teen glared at the 'Quirkless' teen before stomping away into the building. "This isn't over, Deku."
Izuku stood there, frozen for a bit as everyone stared and muttered amongst themselves. Katsuki was going to brutalize him, especially since he thinks that he's lied about being Quirkless for so long. The headache came back and Izuku rubbed the back of his head.
Tr... Tr...
Izuku jumped a little bit and looked around. What was that sound?
He took a deep breath. Maybe he was just being too paranoid and imagining things. It's not like as if someone was watching him from a distance. Everyone there was staring at him, after all.
Several meters away, in an alleyway
"Hm, so that's where the Agito is, is it?" a strange man said, staring at Izuku from a distance before he entered the school building. He was bearlike, with with huge clawed hands, thick fur covering his arms, back, and head, though his muscular chest and abdomen were bare. While the top of his head was that of a bear's head with ears, his lower jaw looked more like a human's jawbone, and his many sharp teeth were bared with no lips to hide them. He wore baggy pants held up by a black sash, with no shoes to cover his bearlike feet, and he had a leather shoulder pad over his left arm, with a wing-like ornament adorning it. He held his right hand over the left side of his chest, and moved it downwards. With his left hand, he stuck out his index and middle fingers, and drew a Z over his right hand. "I shall strike you down in the name of order. May the Overlord forgive me."
Might Tower, All Might's private office
"Alright, just about done with my stretches," All Might said to himself, as he popped his joints. His costume hang loosely off his skinny frame, appearing oversized for him. "Now let's-"
His smartphone began ringing, catching the pro hero's attention. He picked it up, and recognized the number as Tsukauchi's.
"Tsukauchi, how're you doing?" All Might said, answering the call.
"Hey All Might, I hope I didn't catch you at a bad moment, I know it's rather early for me to call."
"Nonsense, I have time to talk," All Might said, taking a seat at his desk. "Well, kind of have to, since I only can do three hours now."
"Yea, I know. Listen, this is about that Midoriya kid. You seemed to be interested in him, so I thought I should tell you, since this isn't an official investigation."
"Is something wrong?"
"I'm not sure exactly," Tsukauchi said, puzzling All Might. "It's about his Quirk and how he claimed that he was Quirkless, and I've been looking into it."
"Does it matter?"
"I think it does. His late life Quirk manifestation matches that of a person from a 15 year old case file I read some time ago. Like Midoriya, he was diagnosed with Quirklessness when he suddenly developed an insectoid transformation Quirk."
"What? What are the odds of that happening?"
"Exactly. After I talked with Midoriya, I went and reread the case file, when I found out something much more troubling."
"What... what is it?"
"This isn't the first time this happened. There's centuries old case file copies I saw about 'bug-man' and monster sightings, way before the Dawn of Quirks. Since they were reported long before the first Quirk, most of them were disregarded as hoaxes, save for the rare one or two where an officer swore they saw one too. And they all share similar descriptions to Midoriya's, though it looks like his might not be fully manifested."
"What? How can that be? Quirks are a recent phenomenon." The more Tsukauchi said, the more All Might sweated. If there were reports of bug men that appeared similar to Izuku for literal centuries, does that mean what the teen said was true? If this wasn't a Quirk, just what was it?
"Yea, but these case line up with Midoriya's. But that's not the worst part."
"There's a worse part?"
"In the same time frame as these sightings, there were murder cases that were reported. And that Quirkless person I mentioned? A few days after their Quirk manifested, they were found murdered in their home. All of them, no suspects, no motives, nothing."
"Murdered? Do you think that this is related to Young Midoriya? These cases are centuries old, there's no way it could be the same murderer."
"Maybe. I went ahead and checked for more recent ones, but most of them were in different cities here, and they're far sparser than the old cases. It might be some sort of secret organization behind it all, I don't know. But I think it's best to keep an eye on him. If what I'm suspecting is true, then he might be next soon."
All Might's fist tightened. If that was true, if there really is some sort of organization dedicated to killing 'bug men' as Tsukauchi puts it, then there was no way he'd like Izuku be another mark on their list.
"I'm meeting him at Dagobah Beach at around 4 today, so that won't be an issue."
"Let me join you, because I have a feeling that something might happen," Tsukauchi said.
"Alright. Thank you for informing me, Tsukauchi."
"No problem. Though if my hunch really is correct, we might be finding ourselves involved in something much, much bigger than anything we know."
Aldera Junior High, End of School Day
Izuku packed up his things into his bag, his eyes shifting around.
Tr... Tr...
The noise from earlier that morning hadn't stopped. It was driving him nuts. Sure, his headache was gone, but the strange noise he kept hearing was just as bad. If anything, he'd prefer the headache, at least they come and go rather quickly. Whatever he's been hearing has been relentless, and it didn't help that it seemed like he was the only one who was hearing it.
"Hey, Deku's been pretty quiet today, hasn't he?" someone whispered. Izuku looked over to the doorway, and saw some of his classmates leaving the room. Yet he could hear them clearly somehow now that he was paying attention to them, over the rest of the chatter and shuffling. "Kind of nice to not hear the muttering for once."
"I dunno, I think it's a lot more creepy that he hasn't muttered at all," their friend replied. "Like he's plotting revenge or something..."
"You really think a wuss like Deku would want revenge on us?"
"Yea, he developed super strength out of nowhere! Don't you remember him shoving Bakugo like a ragdoll?"
"And that bug transformation is gross..." another said.
"You think those headaches are related to it?"
"You know I told you guys it was a bad idea to pick on him."
"Oh come off it, Yamato, you picked on him too!"
"Hey, Deku," Katsuki seethed, slamming his hands onto Izuku's desk and making it explode. The green-haired teen jumped back a bit in his chair, almost falling out of it. He looked around, and noticed that he wasn't hearing that group's conversation anymore (whatever happened, it must require a lot of focus to do...). "Let's have a fucking talk, shall we?"
"S-Sorry Kacchan, but I have somewhere to go-" Izuku said, scrambling backwards before Katsuku grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up.
"You aren't going anywhere until you explain why you're been lying all this time!" Katsuki growled. "Have you been underestimating me, bastard!?"
"Not at all! I've been telling you the truth!" Izuku said, his headache coming back with full vengeance, now simultaneously mixing with the strange noise. He clutched his head and groaned at the pain and annoyance. "Seriously, I'm not! I've got a really bad headache, and I got to go somewhere-"
Tr... Tr...
"Bullshit! Late life manifestations are so rare they're almost unheard of! You must've had that transformation Quirk since we were kids! So quit lying, and stop-"
"If I had Quirk, then why would I lie about it!?" Izuku snapped, raising his voice for the first time against Katsuki. The accusations, the intenser headache, and the strange incessant noise was finally getting to him. The students that were still present, theirs eyes were wide open as the green-haired teen firmly stood up for himself against their class's (arguably the school's) best student. Even Katsuki was surprised.
For once in Izuku's life, instead of trembling with nervousness and anxiety, he was trembling with indignation and frustration. He was in no mood to deal with anything else right now, and he pulled Katsuki's hand off his collar. "If I knew had one all this time, why would I hide it if I wanted to become a hero!? Why would I let everything think that way!?"
"That is a good point.,." one person whispered.
"It'd be pretty dumb to pretend to be Quirkless while still wanting to be a hero..."
"Maybe it really is just some sort of late life Quirk manifestation..."
"Yea, being rare doesn't mean it doesn't happen ever, right?"
"Sounds like Bakugo's scared that his favorite target can fight back now..."
"If Midoriya of all people can stand up to him like this.."
Katsuki gritted his teeth. He'll admit, it was pretty faulty reasoning to think that Izuku would've wanted people to believe he was Quirkless while wanting to be a pro hero. Come to think of it, Izuku's parents had Quirks that couldn't possible result in a bug transformation Quirk. But how else can he explain it?
"Well, you-"
"I'm sorry, but I've got somewhere to be, Kacchan," Izuku said, rubbing his head. "We can talk later about this..."
Izuku stepped around Katsuki, and sped off, not giving the ash-blond teen a chance to follow. Katsuki stood there, dumbfounded as his brain processed what just happened. With each passing second his right eye twitched and twitched, gritting his perfectly maintained teeth so hard that they could crack a walnut. Whether or not that bullshit Quirk really was a rare late life manifestation, that wasn't going to stop him from being the shit out of Izuku. He stormed off, deciding to just go home immediately, since there was no point in trying to chase Izuku, leaving his classmates to gossip.
"Holy shit, Midoriya just told Bakugo off."
"He's going to die soon."
"After that outburst? Definitely."
"I mean, if Midoriya had the balls to stand up to him for once, he's probably not worried anymore."
On the Way to the Train Station
Izuku sped off as fast as he could, worried that Katsuki would be after him. Once his head cleared up (even the strange noise had subsided), he realized just that he mouthed off against his former best friend and humiliated him in front of their classmates. That was the first time he's ever reacted like that. Sure, he was a little snappish sometimes whenever he got a headache, but he never told anyone off like that. He had no idea why he thought that was a good idea, or that he was even capable of it. But the explosive teen had beaten him up over minor things before, so this was certainly going to end up with him going back to the hospital.
He relaxed a bit after getting to the train station to get to Dagobah Beach. If Katsuki had wanted to beat him up, he would've probably done it already. That, or he was waiting back home to do it. Probably the latter, since they do live in the same neighborhood.
He'll cross that bridge when he gets there. Right now, Izuku was curious as to what All Might would want to talk about. It must be something that he couldn't talk about through texts or calls, since he wanted to meet up and all. Maybe it has something to do with the pro hero's injuries, since the teen did find out about it by accident. Or maybe it's about his transformation Quirk. Izuku knew that he still had a lot of questions to ask All Might as well.
"Just what is it that he-" Izuku mumbled, walking out of the train car when he bumped into the back of someone standing in front of him. "O-Oh! Sorry!"
"It's alright, kid," the person said. He had black hair and a short scruffy beard that covered his chin, and seemed amused at the flustered teen. "Looks like you got a lot on your mind."
"S-Sort of. I'm on my way to meet someone," Izuku said. "Lot of things have been happening to me, and I have too many questions to ask..."
"I bet," the man said, rubbing his chin. "You're in a period of time that's confusing. You'll get your answers soon enough."
"I-It's nothing like that! I'm-"
"It's alright, I know what you mean," the man chuckled, walking off. "You should go on and meet up with All Might, after all, Japan's Number One Hero must be a busy man. Have a good day."
"Yea, thanks-" Izuku said, when his brain caught what the man had said. "W-Wait! How did you-!?"
He looked around, and saw that the man had disappeared in the crowd. Just how did that man know that he was meeting with All Might? He never mentioned anything about him! Did he use a telepathic Quirk to read his mind? But if he did that, does that mean that there are more people who know about All Might's-
Izuku shook his head and refocused himself. Just another question to ask, and hopefully get answered.
Dagobah Beach
Soon Izuku made it to the beach, just about 20 minutes before 5. It was just like how he remembered it whenever he past by it; filled with towers and piles of garbage, some that were taller than some of the buildings nearby. It was a shame that Dagobah Beach ended up like this. Izuku saw pictures of the beach before all of the garbage piled up from the water currents pushing it in and people illegally dumping their trash, and it was quite picturesque. But right now it was the perfect place to have a private meeting with the greatest pro hero in the world.
Tra... Tra...
Izuku grumbled and rubbed his head as the strange noise came back into his head. This time though, it seemed slightly clearer. But instead of a headache, he had a different feeling. It was something similar to what he had experienced that morning-
"Hm, you've picked a nice spot," a voice said. Izuku froze and turned around, and saw a hairy bearlike man with a skeletal human jaw, sharp teeth, and a shoulder pauldron on his left arm with a small winglike decoration on it. "In the trash, like where you belong."
"W-What?" Izuku said, backing up from the man. "What do you want from me!?"
"By decree, I shall kill you in the name of the Overlord, foul Agito," the man said. A circle of light appeared over his head, and he reached into it, pulling out a large single headed ax.
"A-Agito!? My name's Izuku Midori-"
"Your birth name doesn't matter to me, Agito," the bearlike man answered. "Now repent for defying the natural order."
Izuku ducked as the man swung his ax horizontally, dodging the first attack before scrambling and running away. The bearlike man looked, and sighed as he gave chase to the retreating boy who weaved in and out around the garbage piles, while he lumbered around them.
"Days like this makes me wish I was in the Jackal clan or the Crow clan..."
"This is unbelievable..." All Might said, reading through some of the copies of the cases that Tsukauchi had given him. It was unsettling, to see so many descriptions of the murder victims from over the centuries since the 1980s. And the murders themselves seemed outright impossible in pre-Quirk times. Sure, some were relatively simple like snapped necks, but then there were some that were found partially melted, or even buried in walls without any damages to the wall itself (no wonder many of these cases went unsolved). "So whatever Quirk- er, power that Young Midoriya has has been around for centuries? And with each sighting, there was a murder?"
"Seems like it," Tsukauchi said, as he parked his car and they got out. They were twenty minutes early to arrive at Dagobah Beach, so that they wouldn't miss meeting with Izuku. "The Nakano murder case was the last reported case, but whoever's responsible might go after Midoriya if they've watched the footage-"
Suddenly they heard loud crashes around in the garbage piles, and Izuku yelling. In a split second, All Might buffed up and leaped towards the disturbance, while Tsukauchi ran in, pulling out his pistol and loading his cartridge into it.
"I hate that I was right," he muttered to himself, moving behind pile after pile so that he could sneak up on whoever was attacking Izuku.
Izuku looked around as he turned left and right. The bearlike man had given up on running around the garbage, and had opted to start smashing the piles apart with his ax and fists to get to the green-haired teen. Izuku's head was pounding from his headache, but he couldn't stop. If he did, that was it for him. He turned left, and realized too late that he went into a dead end, getting cornered by the man.
"End of the line, Agito," he said, as he slowly approached Izuku, his ax raised.
"W-Why do you want to kill me!? What did I do to you!?" Izuku asked. The strange noise was growing louder and louder, blaring into his brain. He tried to find an opening to escape, but the man was too big, and he couldn't climb the garbage pile in time to escape.
Tra... Tra... Tra... Tran... Tran...
"It is not what you've done to me, but what you will do to the world," the bearlike man said. "All Agitos are a threat to the natural order as dictated by the Overlord. Though I will admit, it's nice to be able to at least get rid of some humans."
"What does any of that mean!? Who's Agito!? Who's the Overlord!?"
"As if I need to answer any of your-"
"Have no fear! For I am HERE!"
Izuku looked up and saw All Might descending from the skies, his fist reared back as he soared towards the villain. "I won't let you hurt anyone here today, villain! Detroit SMAAAAAASH!"
The wind pressure from All Might's punch collided with the man, knocking him into a nearby garbage pile which collapsed right on top of him. All Might ran towards Izuku, and checked the boy.
"Are you alright, Young Midoriya?" All Might asked.
"Y-Yea, just having the worst headache ever..." Izuku muttered. "But I'm-"
All of a sudden, the bearlike man jumped out of the garbage, rubbing his head.
"Hmph, for a human, you can hit hard, can you?" he said, walking towards the two. "I have no quarrel with you, so please stand down, and allow me to get rid of the Agito."
"As if I would let a villain kill a civilian! Ancient conspiracy or not!" All Might said, to Izuku's confusion.
"Ancient conspiracy-"
"If you're so dedicated to protecting people, then you should understand that Agitos are a threat to everyone." He pointed at Izuku with his ax. "His kind must be destroyed for the sake of the natural order and peace."
"Killing for the sake of natural order and peace? What nonsense!"
"As if you hadn't tried to kill All for One," the bearlike man replied.
All Might's eyes widened. Impossible, how did he know-
"I grow weary, All Might. Stand aside. His kind must-"
Tsukauchi came from behind one of the garbage piles and unloaded his pistol into the bearlike man's direction. The bullets flattened against an invisible barrier and fell to the ground. "Hm, another one who seeks to interfere..."
"Just who are you?" the detective said, unfazed. "Are you responsible for the murder of the last Quirkless person who developed a bug transformation Quirk?"
"Hm? A bug transformation Quirk? Do you believe that the Agito have Quirks?" the bearlike man questioned. "They have something far older, and far worse. They have the power to destroy the world. And I intend on carrying out the Overlord's order to kill them-"
"Texas SMAAAAAAASH!" All Might had closed the distance between them in an instant, throwing his fist into the villain's face. To his shock, this time he was barely budged.
"I see that no words shall change your minds. Your power is impressive, but it's nothing to me when I'm prepared," the bearlike man said. He grabbed All Might's fist, and swung him away into a garbage pile. All Might coughed and spat out some blood when he landed in it, having been forced into his skeletal form. He tried to buff up, but to his shock, he was unable to.
"W-What in the-"
"I have temporarily negated your Quirk with my divine energy," the bearlike man answered. "If you insist on interfering, then I shall make sure that you cannot. Do not worry, once the Agito is dead, your Quirk shall return."
He turned towards Izuku, but before he could step any closer, Tsukauchi unloaded another round of bullets into him. He sighed, and walked over to Tsukauchi, who did not flinch at the approaching villain. He grabbed the detective by the collar, and lifted him up. "Be thankful that the Overlord only wants the Agitos dead, otherwise you might've lost your life seconds ago."
"Just who is this Overlord? Your organization's leader!?" Tsukauchi demanded.
"He's much more than just a leader of an organization," the bearlike man said. "He is a god, the one who-"
All Might tackled the bearlike man, holding down his ax-wielding arm as Tsukauchi slipped through his grasp and joined All Might in holding him down.
"Even without my Quirk, I won't let you kill anyone here!" All Might said, as he and Tsukauchi pushed him away from Izuku.
"Cease your foolishness at once!" The bearlike man attempted to swing them off, but their grip was tighter than he expected.
"Run, Midoriya! We'll hold him off as long as we can!" Tsukauchi ordered.
But Izuku was frozen, hyperventilating from all that was happening. The Sludge Villain Incident was one thing, but to get caught up in something like this? More and more questions just kept piling up, and the stress of everything was overwhelming him. The headache in his head kept pounding and pounding when all of a sudden, it all disappeared. Izuku's eyes glazed over, as he entered a trance-like state. The strange noise he had been hearing all day finally became clear. It was a single word. A single word that changed between thousands of languages, but all with the same meaning. A red belt with a large gem-like buckle formed over his waist, and he held his hands out in front of him. And with a single phrase-
Trans-
"-form!"
Izuku pressed on the both sides of the belt, a yellow light shining from the gem-like buckle. Light covered him, nearly blinding everyone present. When it died down, Izuku had transformed once again, but this time, his skin had turned black, with a gold and silver armorlike carapace around his torso, and his head had become round and black, with red buglike eyes, mandibles, and large golden horns.
"Dammit, he's awakened!" the bearlike man growled, finally knocking the stunned All Might and Tsukauchi off. "Tch, doesn't matter! I'll make sure that you'll die like all the other foul Agitos!"
Izuku remained silent as the man charged at him. He swung down his ax, only for Izuku to block it with his left forearm. The buglike teen followed up with a right handed punch to the bearlike man's gut, causing spittle to fly out of his mouth as he fell backwards and dropped his ax, coughing in pain for the first time since he arrived. Izuku didn't let up his assault, kicking the bearlike man across the chin and launching him into the air. He stuck his hand above his head, and the villain landed on his fist, the impact of the punch stunning him before Izuku tossed him into one of the garbage piles. This did not stop the bearlike man, however, he clambered out of the pile, and ran towards his dropped ax, but Izuku reached it first and kicked it away before grabbing the bearlike man's head and kneeing it.
"A-Are you seeing this, Tsukauchi?" All Might said, as the villain swiped his clawed hand at Izuku, who blocked it with his forearm, though the weight of the blow pushed him backwards.
"Yea, but I can't believe what I'm seeing," the detective replied, watching Izuku slam his elbow into the bearlike man's shoulder before kicking him again. "Is that really the same kid?"
The bearlike man crashed against another pile of garbage before rolling onto the sand, tired and beaten from receiving Izuku's fists. He growled, as he felt the small bruises on his body fusing to become one big bruise. "This is exactly why you Agitos should be all killed! To be able to do this much to a messenger of the Overlord, it's despicable! Mere humans... fighting against the divine! Inconceivable!"
The bearlike man yelled as he charged once again at Izuku, the claws on his hands extending almost a full foot long. Izuku stood his ground, and with a deep breath, entered a stance with his right arm reared back. A shining light of a symbol that resembled his horns formed behind him, flowing into his fist, and his horns spread open, as if his current power increasing. His right fist glowed with the light it absorbed, and Izuku finally broke into a charge towards the bearlike man.
With his hand reared back, he threw it forward in a mighty punch, square into the bearlike man's chest, launching him backwards once again. He landed on his back, and struggled to stand up.
"He... he did it!" All Might said, impressed at Izuku. "He's managed to beat someone who could-"
"Dam... Dammit!" the villain cried out, as a circle of light formed over him. "You... you cursed Agito! This won't be the last you see of us! Another will come and finish you! By the decree of the Overlord, you shall perish!"
With a final yell, the bearlike man exploded, consumed by a cloud of fire and smoke that nearly blinded All Might and Tsukauchi. When they looked again, nothing remained of the villain that they could see.
"Oh no..." All Might muttered, as the realization dawned on him.
"Even if this was self defense, he went too far..." Tsukauchi muttered. The two got up and slowly approached the still Izuku, who hadn't undone his transformation yet. "Midoriya... Midoriya... Are you listening?"
Izuku slowly turned his head to look at Tsukauchi, before clutching his head in pain. He stumbled backwards, before the transformation disappeared and the green-haired teen returned to normal. He rubbed his head, and groaned. "What... what happened?"
"Listen, I know that you weren't thinking consciously, but, you see..." All Might said, trying to figure out how to tell him gently. It didn't take Izuku long to realize something was wrong, especially when he saw the lingering flames and no sign of the villain.
"Did... did I do that?" Izuku whispered. "I... I didn't mean to-!"
"I shouldn't worry too much about that, kid."
The three looked up and saw a man sitting on top of a tower of garbage. He looked down at them before leaping off and landing in front of them. "Ursus Torus wasn't that great to begin with. Never really thought things through."
"You knew that villain? Just who are you?" All Might said, immediately going on guard at the sight of the man. For some reason, this man felt like he was on a different level than the villain that Izuku had just killed. The mere fact that he dropped the villain's alias was also suspicious.
"Easy there All Might, I'm not here to fight," the man said, holding his hands up.
"How did you know-"
"You- You're the man from the train station earlier!" Izuku said, recognizing the man.
"Wow, got a good memory, don't you kid?" he replied. He walked over to All Might, and touched his shoulder. All of a sudden, All Might felt stronger upon the touch, and he tested out One for All, finding that it had returned. "You see? Not here to fight. Otherwise wouldn't have undone Torus's negation, would I? Now, I bet you all have a lot of questions to ask, and I'll answer them all."
"Alright, then, let's start off with something simple," Tsukauchi said, his eyes narrowed as he stared down the stranger. "Like who you are, and what your organization is."
"Oh, that is simple," the man laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, in this form, I'm known as Souichi Tenjin, but in my true form-"
A light shone over the man, and as it died down, what stood in his place was a beetlelike man, though his horns resembled a Hercules beetle. He wore white baggy pants that were held up by an armored skirt and buckle, with the legs tucked into armored leather boots. He wore silver beetlelike armor around his torso and shoulders, with a winglike decoration over his left shoulder, while his arms and abdomen exposed to reveal his well-defined muscles. Around his neck was a large muffler-like cloth collar, and over his mouth was a silver mask.
"- I'm known as Zadkiel, and I'm what you humans could call an angel."
ORIGINAL AO3 NOTES:
- And here it is, the last pilot chapter, as well as my third/fourth story I'll be picking up (the third really, this was a long time in the making compared to 'Swords and Superheroes'). Since I plan on writing this story, the ending of this pilot chapter's pretty different than the other ones.
- I have to give a big shoutout to Wickerstein on FFnet for this. If it weren't for him, this fanfic wouldn't have even been a thing. He was a big idea guy when it came down to it.
- 'My Hero, Agito' is going to take a lot of liberties and changes to the Agito canon, though it'll still be recognizable as an Agito-based story, I think. In fact, the circumstances behind the ending and certain things will be different. And we'll be seeing quite a number of different Agitos as a result.
- I plan on this being a strictly Agito/MHA crossover, so no Kuuga or Gurongi for now. This does mean that the context and reasoning behind G3's creation will be different.
- In this fanfic, all Lords speak regularly. While they're pretty menacing with how they killed potential Agitos and how they didn't speak, most of them... really don't stand out from each other all that much (excluding the El Lords and a couple others). You could totally keep most of them the same color and it wouldn't make much of a difference in my opinion. Like it does add to the mystery of what the Lords are, and the idea that they're not human, but... the El Lords and Overlord could speak to humans, so why not the lower Lords? Plus, it'll add a different angle to the story rather than just entirely relying on the human characters.
- Speaking of, I added a tier between the El Lords and Lower Lords (the regular ones) called High Lords, who monitor the Lower Lords directly (since the El Lords spend most of their time within the Overlord's body until summoned). Mostly because they had Queen Lords, right? Meaning that they had some sort 'hierarchy' within the regular Lords. There are 'clan leaders' within the Lower Lords as well (and tend to be the ones that report to the High Lords), so even the Lower Lords have their own hierarchy. As for their real name, like the Lower Lords being the Malakh, the High Lords are called the Seraphim. We'll hear both names eventually.
- I hope that it's believable for Izuku to snap at Katsuki. Personally, I think having chronic headaches since childhood would lead to him being a little more snappish, more so when he's actually having an intense one (like the second confrontation in the classroom).
- I've been wondering whether or not to include Hiroshi in this one. On one hand, I do have a couple ideas for him here. On the other, I don't want to keep inserting him into my fanfics, because people might get the idea that he's a self-insert when he isn't. We might share a couple hobbies here and there, but by no means is he a representation of me. Biggest reason why I use him is because why make another Quirkless character with a similar personality and serves as a foil to Izuku? Would be redundant in my opinion. He's definitely never making an appearance in BUAH!, since he was created afterwards, and he'd derail the plan there.
- Unrelated side note, I was asked if I had any plans on inserting Gridman into UHA since Gridman's pretty much Ultraman but for the internet, and I don't, because UHA was conceived solely as an Ultraman/MHA crossover. Adding Gridman in would derail whatever I've got planned. HOWEVER, I've started to think about doing a Gridman/MHA crossover because I got a few ideas (basically it's an AU of UHA, with Hero being 'Gridhero' rather than Ultraman Hero, and Virus remaining the same but with different allies since he'd be a 'computer virus'). Won't work on a pilot chapter for that right now, 'cuz I want to go back to UHA and BUAH!, but it's definitely something I'm considering to do later.
