"Olivia? Is that you?" Calvin's voice reached her ears before she even saw him. He sounded older, mature. He was a fully grown man now. Her eyes filled with tears.
"Calvin," she breathed out his name. "I can't believe this, it's been so long." She got up from the chair and embraced the young man.
Elliot and Noah shared a smile, happy they could give this moment to her.
The young man hugged her like his life depended on it and Elliot's mind went back to one of the most heartbreaking moments of his life, when they took the boy away in the middle of the squad room.
"I missed you so much," Calvin whispered in her ear. She only nodded, unable to form words. They pull apart and she looks at him, taking in the man he had become.
She took his hand, pulling him to the table she had been sitting on. He cleaned his face the best he could and went with her. He smiled again recognizing Detective Stabler. He looks older, bald and bigger, but it was definitely him right there.
"You remember Elliot?" She asked.
"Of course! Thank you for getting in contact with me. I've been thinking about reaching out but wasn't sure." He said, looking down, suddenly feeling a little shy.
"Don't worry about it. And it wasn't my idea, it was this young man's here," he pulled his arm around Noah's shoulder.
Calvin looked at the young boy seated next to the detective. Curled hair and big blue eyes. It took him a few seconds to process the new information.
"Oh my god! You got together after all!" He exclaimed. Olivia turned red and Elliot scratched his neck, embarrassed. Noah burst into laughter letting out an "I wish," in between.
Seeing their discomfort, he immediately began apologizing. "I'm so sorry, I just saw your son and reached the wrong conclusion."
"Our- Our son?" She asked. Calvin pointed at Noah.
"Oh- Oh!" She exclaimed, understanding his conclusion. "No, honey, Noah is my son. He is not Elliot's."
"Well, you must really have a type then, Olivia. The boy looks just like him." He tries to joke.
"You wouldn't believe that I'm adopted then," Noah said, smiling.
"No way!" He looked at Olivia expecting her to correct the boy, but she only nodded. "That's crazy. But of course you adopted." He looked at her full of admiration.
"He was my miracle, and I am thankful everyday for the opportunity to be his mother," she says looking at her boy, who turned bright pink.
"Mooom," he protested.
"No Noah, you should know how much your mother wanted a family, and how happy she was when she got you." Elliot told the boy.
"I couldn't understand it then, but I can now, Olivia. I know you didn't want to give me up," Calvin said. "I know you had no choice." His eyes filled with tears. "And I never got a chance to thank you, for showing me what it should be like."
"What, honey?" She asked.
"A mother's love." He answers and her own eyes filled with tears. He cleaned his face. "Anyway, I'm a social worker now, trying to make some lives a little better, like you did mine."
She beamed at him, proud about the man he was. "That's great!"
"It is, right?" He looked at the other men on the table and Elliot realized he wanted to say something in private.
"How about Noah and I go pick some ice cream for us?" He stands up, inviting the boy along. Calvin nods a thank you at him and Elliot looks at Olivia. "Strawberry?"
"You bet," she smiles at him. The two of them make their way to the end of the long line.
"I wanted to say sorry, Olivia," Calvin says when they are out of earshot.
"Sorry?"
"Your letters stopped, and I believed you had forgotten about me, that you didn't care anymore. My grandparents made me believe it for a long time. Only when my grandma was on her deathbed she admitted you kept sending letters until they told you to stop. And she told me what happened to you. And I was so angry, because I-"his tears fell down again. "I didn't know. I loved you, I wanted to stay with you." He says urgently.
Her hand grabs him across the table and she says. "Calvin, all I wanted was for you to stay with me. After that, I wanted to be part of your life. You don't have any fault about what happened, ok? I need you to understand that."
"I do now," he says sadly. "I never saw my mom again, you know? My grandparents were good to me, but I always wondered." He looked down.
Olivia looked around and saw Elliot and Noah were still in line. "After they took you from me, I gave up being a mom completely, I figured it wasn't in the cards for me." He looked confused at her son. "Noah was really a miracle, a complete surprise. He is my baby, but you were always my first son." One tear slides down her face and she pulls him in another hug. "I'm so happy you are here."
"I am too," he said, smiling. "I want you to meet my fiancé, Sam. I told her so much about you," he went on and on about his life and his plans, and when Elliot returned, he included all of them. Noah smiled at his mother's happiness, at this new person in their lives. They had an incredible time together and parted ways making sure the next meeting was scheduled. Elliot also had something to do and promised to come over for dinner the next day.
They walked home in silence, and Noah was pensive.
"Mom?" he asked suddenly.
"Yes, baby?"
"I want to apologize for saying Connor was my only family. It wasn't what I meant and I think it hurt you and that was never my intention." He said at once.
She never mentioned it, but it was good to know it wasn't really his intention. "I just need you to know that there's more to family than biology."
"I know that, and you know what?" He asks.
"What?"
"I think you were always meant to be a mother, always meant to be my mother." He said.
She pulled him into a crushing hug. "Yes, I was."
"Are you happy I found Calvin?"
"I really appreciate what you did, honey," she says and he beams at her. "That's why you'll only stay grounded for one week for going through my closet and my phone."
"Oh man." He mumbles sadly but thinking it could be a lot worse.
