After another long day of sitting in court, I was beginning to miss Hogwarts, even Hogwarts with Dolores there. Not that I would ever say it out loud. I sighed as I opened my office door pulling off my Wizengamot hat as I walked in and immediately spotted the translucent doe staring at me from beside my desk.
My eyes widened as I quickly closed the door behind me and whispered "Severus?"
"Potter has given me this message 'He's got Padfoot in the place that it is hidden' I fear Potter has had a vision sent purposely by the Dark Lord to deceive him. Not that I care much for his well being, but you may wish to check Black is at Headquarters. Alert the others and I will contact Dumbledore. I will check in with you soon," it spoke quietly with Severus' voice and before I could even process what it had just said, it vanished.
My heart seemed to have stopped beating as I wrenched the door back open and practically ran through the Ministry to get outside.
I appeared on the doorstep of Grimmauld Place, opening the door and letting it slam behind me as I marched down the hallway.
"Sirius?" I called, pausing and listening for any signs of life.
"The blood traitor returns," I looked down at the house elf slinking around the doorway to the kitchen.
"Where is Sirius?" I demanded as Kreacher glared up at me.
"My poor mistress hated the blood traitor as much as she hated Master," he said solemnly.
"Enough, Kreacher, tell me where he is now!" I said my voice rising as my patience with him was hanging on by a thread.
He glared at me once again before scurrying off down the stairs to the basement kitchen and I quickly followed him.
"Kreacher-" I warned as I caught up with him. He froze and turned around slowly as I pointed my wand at him. He was supposed to take orders from me but had obviously forgotten this in his solitude, and I decided that in my haste to find Sirius, I was willing to jinx him.
"Where is Sirius?" I repeated loudly, panic rising in my chest.
"Kreacher must not lie to Master's blood traitor wife," the house elf bowed low at my feet.
"Megs?" I spun around and saw Sirius descending the stairs from the upper floor completely unharmed, carrying a roll of bandages and looking between the elf and me, confusion etched on his face.
"Thank God" My heart leapt as I ran to him, wrapping my arms around his neck, the bandages he was holding falling to the floor. I felt his hands cup around the back of my head before he pulled me gently away from him, peering into my face.
"What's going on?" He asked, frowning.
I looked into his grey eyes, my arms dropping to hold his forearms that he had moved to my waist.
"Meg - what are you doing here?" Remus' voice came as he and Tonks appeared in the doorway that led upstairs.
"Ah you are here," Severus' voice made us all snap our heads towards the doe that had just appeared in front of the fireplace.
"I hate to interrupt but, I trust Meg told you what has happened" his voice sneered and Sirius, Tonks and Remus all looked at me as he continued "I am concerned that Potter and Granger have not come back from the Forbidden Forest with Umbridge. Potter may already be at the Ministry. I intend to search the forest but I suggest the Order depart for the Ministry at once."
"What is going on?" Sirius asked loudly, staring at me.
"Someone needs to remain at Headquarters to inform Dumbledore, who is on his way. I request that Black perform this duty." Severus said.
I felt Sirius' grip on my waist tighten slightly.
The doe turned and vanished and I looked up at Sirius.
"From what I know Voldemort sent Harry a vision of your capture and I think he has gone to the Ministry to find you." I said quickly.
"What?" He snapped.
"I don't know anymore than that." I said urgently, shaking my head.
Sirius let go of me and called for Kreacher who appeared and reluctantly bowed.
"Kreacher - you wait here and tell Dumbledore that we have gone to the Ministry to get Harry."
Sirius' features were set with defiance and I knew exactly what was going through his mind.
"I really don't think it's a great idea for you to be seen at the Ministry," I said quickly.
I glanced at Remus who was biting his lip, looking between Sirius and I.
"You expect me to stay put?" He asked with a coolness to his voice "Are you actually siding with Snape?"
When I said nothing he shook his head in exasperation and turned to walk away from me heading towards the kitchen door.
We had been here before, and last time I lost him. A fear I hadn't felt for a long time rose in my chest.
"Sirius, wait!" I grabbed his hand and he spun around looking at me, his eyes blazing.
"Meg honestly- there is no way I'm staying here whilst Harry is in danger!" he said angrily.
I couldn't let him go, but how could I make him stay?
I knew how important Harry was, especially to him.
I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Moody and Kingsley had appeared behind Remus and Tonks.
"Please, I -" I paused as I looked at my hand gripping his. "I can't lose you again," I said quietly and his eyes met mine. He took a step towards me, grabbed my face and kissed me.
He leant his forehead against mine as his lips left mine and whispered, "You won't."
He turned away from me and disapperated.
I shared a look with Remus again, who was looking as apprehensive as I'm sure I looked. I let out a shaky breath and followed Sirius.
We all arrived into the circular room which resembled a creepy amphitheatre and I grabbed Sirius' hand as we took in the scene below us. The first person my eyes focused on was Harry, who was holding out his hand as though passing something to my uncle. I squeezed Sirius' hand as we exchanged a glance, a thousand unspoken words went between us and we started to jump from step to step down to the bottom of the room.
My uncle spun around and raised his wand at us and I lifted my wand but before I could even think about casting anything Harry had shouted "impedimenta!" and I watched with a smirk on my face as my uncle went crashing into the Dias in which Sirius had started duelling Bellatrix.
Before I knew it, my Uncle had gotten up and pointed his wand at Harry and Neville who were scrambling to get up when Remus jumped in between them shouting to Harry and Neville "Harry round up the others and go!"
I gave Remus a nod as I stepped around him to face my uncle. Curses and stunning spells went flying around me as I took on the ferocity of his spells. I had faced stronger wizards in my time, but not for a while and, I was finding that I wasn't quite as fast as he was. I made a mental note to take some time to get back into duelling as a spell hit my arm, pain shooting up into my shoulder and temporarily dazing me causing my uncle to gain the upper hand. He sent me flying backwards into the wall, hitting my head hard on the stone before falling down. I got up quickly, squeezing my eyes shut as the dizziness subsided. I opened my eyes as I heard him laughing but immediately stopped as a red light hit him as Kingsley continued my fight with him. A tall death eater closest to me faltered in his fight with Remus and stood watching me.
The death eater shoved passed Remus who stumbled and ripped off the mask covering their face, throwing it to the floor whilst striding towards me.
My eyes grew wide and my heart sank as I stared at the face of my father. His eyes were hollow and haunted and his pale skin clung to his facial bones, wasted away from starvation. Despite this, he still retained the "classic Megera" appearance of youth.
"You!" He roared, raising his wand and pointing it straight at me.
"Hello, Dad," I said blankly as I blocked the spell he cast at me.
"I should have known you would grace us with your presence "fighting the good fight"." he mocked, flicking his wand again, attempting to curse me
"Can't say I thought the same about you." I retorted, blocking his spell once again.
He attempted to grab my shoulder but I ducked out of his way and spun around aiming a stunning spell at his back and he fell forward.
"Tell me," he spat as he jumped up furiously "-was it worth it, that Order of Merlin? For throwing your own mother and father in prison?" He stepped towards me, rage etched into every inch of his face, sparks flying from his wand.
I raised my chin defiantly. "I just hope they kept your cell free for your return to Azkaban." I said.
"You filthy traitor." he whispered dangerously as he once again tried to stun me and I deflected it quickly, the red light hitting the back of a death eater close by.
"You know, I'm quite used to being called that now. It's kind of lost all meaning." I said sniggering at how angry he was getting at me.
My father said nothing but made a slashing movement with his wand so quickly I didn't have a chance to counter it and I felt a white hot pain across my cheek as it burst open, blood splattering my robes and his. I mentally cursed at myself for being slow and I could start to feel my temper rising.
"I know what you took Meghana," my father growled through clenched teeth as he grabbed the front of my robes, his face inches from mine.
Shit I thought as sudden fear crept into my body sending a chill down my back. I quickly pushed it down, my breathing slightly elevated. He smiled maliciously as he obviously saw it flicker on my face.
"You can't hide it anymore" he shoved me backwards and I stumbled but maintained my balance.
"Sirius! Sirius!" I heard Harry bellowing from somewhere, but to me it sounded distant as anger thudded in my ears. I sent curse after curse at my father and I could see him struggling to keep up with blocking and deflecting them.
"Sirius!"
My father had no choice but to start moving slowly backwards and out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Dumbledore, but it didn't fully register, my mind focused on hurling another curse at my father and he fell backwards. He quickly tried to get up but I stood over him, pointing my wand at his throat and he froze.
"Meg," I heard Dumbledore's soft voice from somewhere close to me. But I ignored him as I glared down at my father, breathing heavily.
"Your precious Ministry can't protect you now child." he snarled as he scowled up at me.
There was a loud bang and someone yelled in pain. I looked up and saw Bellatrix run past Dumbledore who was standing just behind my father.
Dumbledore spun around and aimed a spell at her but she deflected it and continued to run up the steep steps.
"She killed Sirius! She killed him! I'll kill her" I heard Harry shout.
Killed Sirius?
I blinked as something got through the fog in my mind and I spun around to see Harry rip himself from Remus' grip and run after Bellatrix.
Remus looked defeated and panic rose in my chest. That fear I had felt back in Grimmauld Place making its way back into my being with a vengeance. I was half aware of my father laughing cruelly and then disapperating whilst Dumbledore sped off after Harry.
I looked around quickly looking for Sirius but he wasn't anywhere to be seen. My heart started to beat fast as I strode over to Remus purposefully.
"Remus?" A tiny noise came from my mouth in a voice I didn't recognise as my own.
He looked up at me, his eyes bright, his mouth opening but he evidently could not form words.
I shook my head at him blinking quickly to stop the tears falling. Sirius couldn't be dead. He just couldn't.
"Meg-" Remus started.
I continued to shake my head, unable to stop, unable to process anything.
"No," I said simply.
"Meg," Remus said again, in an almost pleading voice "I'm so sorry he fell through the veil-"
"No" I repeated my chest was getting tight and breathing was getting harder as I felt my heart break. to
This was not happening.
Not again.
Remus reached out to touch my arm but I pulled it away from his reach as I gasped for air. Mad Eye, who was supporting Tonks, limped over to us and grumbled something I didn't hear.
I spun around to look at the veil, it was fluttering ever so slightly as though a breeze was flowing through it. It whispered to me, promising me that I could just go through it too and it would send me to him. It would be fine, I could be with him, together again - like we were always meant to be.
My feet had begun to carry me towards the veil before I could even think about what I was doing.
It didn't matter anyway, nothing did.
Only him.
Always him.
"Meg what are you doing?!" Remus' panicked voice snapped me out of my own head and I felt his hand grab mine as he roughly pulled me around to face him. I blinked at him, his face was etched with worry and grief.
"Remus-?" I said my voice breaking as the reality of the situation suddenly crashed around me, crushing my soul, enveloping my whole body and I fell to my knees under the weight of it. Remus, who hadn't let go of my hand, crouched down and held me tight. Once again it was just me and Remus, only this time Sirius wasn't coming back.
