Carolyn watched as Kitt pulled into the parking bay. Michael got out, looking quite beat up. He flashed them all a grin while Devon shook his head fondly. Carolyn was reassured. Captain Gregg, who had been in the passenger seat, came out of the car and stood near Carolyn, which was also reassuring.
Kitt said worriedly, "April, I have been sensing an anomalous reading since I arrived at the warehouse where Michael was being held. And I am still sensing it now."
Michael turned back to face Kitt. Clearly, he had moved a little too quickly as his knees began to buckle. Captain Gregg quickly brought a chair over to him, holding it as Michael sat down.
"Thanks, Mrs. M."
"Oh, that wasn't me. That was the Captain."
"The Captain?"
"Captain Daniel Gregg."
"The guy who built Gull Cottage?"
"Yes. His spirit has been there ever since his death in 1869. Though he can leave Gull Cottage when he chooses."
"That is the most ridiculous nonsense I have ever heard," said April. "Ghosts!"
"He prefers to be called a spirit."
"Spirits are involved, all right."
Captain Gregg had had enough. He appeared so that everyone – including Kitt – could see him. He then stalked over to where April stood, deliberately walking through objects on his way.
"Clearly, young lady, there are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Michael leaned around Captain Gregg to look at Kitt. "Hey, pal. I think I've found the source of those anomalous readings of yours."
"Oh, my," replied Kitt
Captain Gregg glared at April. "Well?!"
Startled, she dropped the tool she was holding. Captain Gregg caught it and put it away, without either touching the tool or breaking eye contact with April.
"Good heavens!" said Devon.
Captain Gregg turned and saw Devon for the first time. "Not another blasted doppelganger!"
"Sean Callahan," Carolyn explained.
Devon was surprised. "The poet?"
"Oh, you know him?"
"A third-rate Irish poet," Devon explained to April and Michael, as Captain Gregg smirked. He then continued, "He's some kind of distant cousin on my mother's side of the family. I've never met him, but my brother did once. Wasn't impressed, as I recall."
Captain Gregg turned to Carolyn. "Mrs. Muir, I trust you are well."
Carolyn smiled. "Yes, Captain. Kitt brought me safely here. And Devon has been a lovely host."
Devon recovered his manners. "I am Devon Miles." He held out his hand, and then looked slightly abashed.
"Captain Daniel Gregg." He bowed his head to Devon, who returned the gesture.
"I believe you've met Michael," said Devon.
"Not formally."
Michael leaned back in the chair, sizing up Captain Gregg. "Pleased to meet you, sir. And thanks. For your assistance back there in the warehouse. That was you who pulled me out of the way of that guy, right?"
"I did quite a bit more than that, sir. I undid your handcuffs, tripped one of those bilge rats, and moved his bat out of his reach. Oh, and activated the device that summoned your infernal machine."
"I beg your pardon," said Kitt, slightly offended.
"Really, Captain? After all that Kitt has done?"
Captain Gregg considered it. "I shall drop the adjective, Madame."
"I am surprised at how much you look like Devon, Captain Gregg," said Kitt.
"I died in 1869, well before even Devon's grandparents were born. Therefore, it is more correct to state that Devon looks like me."
"However, I knew Devon first."
Captain Gregg stiffened and grew angry. Carolyn was concerned.
"Captain?"
"Those blasted . . . Madame, I must depart to repel boarders."
"Repel –" Michael started to ask.
Carolyn ignored him and asked Captain Gregg, "Gull Cottage is under attack?"
"Yes."
"Kitt and I will come help, Captain, sir."
"So will I," announced Carolyn.
"Madame –"
"You may have built Gull Cottage, Captain. But I live there. I raised my children there. And I fully intend to spoil grandchildren there some day."
They exchanged glares, and Captain Gregg backed down with a nod. He then disappeared. Michael got up and went to Kitt. April was still standing in shock, and he patted her shoulder in passing. Devon opened the car door for Carolyn. She got in, and Michael drove off for Gull Cottage.
