I felt like a complete idiot as I lay in bed that night. I was super excited to see Leon today and he didn't even show up. I'm mad at him but more mad at myself for being stupid and actually thinking that we could be friends. I don't even know where the hell he lives! I don't know anything about him. I should stop this before it goes any further. I scoffed at that thought. If it was even going to.
I wanted to stay in bed all day and mope the next day, but there was a commotion outside so I went out there to see what was going on. Jesus was here. He brought a box that he said we forgot yesterday.
"You didn't have to come all the way here just for one box." My dad told him.
"That's okay. I was in the neighborhood." Jesus said then he looked at me. He looked like he wanted to talk to me, that's when I remembered about our conversation. Was the box of food just an excuse to come talk to me? That made me feel a bit guilty.
I pulled Jesus aside so we could talk. "Hey? Did you find out about—
"There's no Leon at The Kingdom." He cut me off. "But Abby, I don't like this. I really think you need to tell your dad."
"I will. Just," I looked back to make sure no one was around, "let me handle this, okay?" I nodded. "I was going to ask him but…I didn't go out cuz of the rain." I half lied. "I'm gonna ask him tomorrow."
"You better." He said seriously. "And after that, tell your dad."
"I will."
After that, Jesus headed for the gate and we parted ways. I'm mad at Leon and don't really want to see him again, but now I'm stuck. I wish I wouldn't have told Jesus anything. I should've just kept it to myself and not got anyone else involved. Now I have to see Leon again.
I left in a hurry the next day before anyone questioned me about where I was going, I didn't want to lie but I couldn't tell them the truth. Not yet.
On my way out, I ran into Max. He started following me. "Hey, Abby." He grinned.
"Hey, kid." I said while walking.
"Do you wanna come hangout with me?"
"I can't." I said.
He paused for a minute. "You goin' on a run?"
"Yeah."
"Where?"
"You don't need to know." I said while opening the gate. "And I don't have time for this."
"Can I come?"
"No." I snapped and closed the gate. He stayed behind.
Narrator's POV
Max stood behind the gate. He was confused by the way that Abby was treating him, he thought they were friends. Everyone treats him like a kid, but Abby usually was different. Not now. She must think he's a kid like everyone else does. The boy thought. It made him mad. He was sick of being treated like a child, he was almost sixteen for goodness sake!
"Like that's going to stop me." Max said out loud. He took a look around, then opened the gate and snuck out. He could see Abby in the distance.
Abby's POV
Leon was there this time when I arrived at the spot, he was leaning against a tree and not looking my way. "Oh, so you actually show up this time?" I said smartly.
He jumped a little. "Abby." He said in surprise. "I didn't see you there."
"Yeah and I didn't see you yesterday." I snapped.
"I-I know." He put a hand up. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that to you."
"Save it, clown." I said. "Here's your book back." I tossed it at him, he almost didn't catch it. "It sucked."
"Wh—you didn't like it?" Leon asked sounding surprised. It made me mad that he seemed to care more about that than him standing me up. I scoffed and turned to leave. "Wait, Abby. Where are you going?"
"Home." I stated. "I don't need to see you again. I don't need your fake friendship." I turned back to look at him. "I don't know who you are or where you even come from and what it is you're trying to do but I don't need it. Save it for some other idiot."
"Abby, will you please just listen?" He gently grabbed my arm. I pulled out of his grasp and gave him a dirty look, then started walking again.
"I'm a savior." Leon blurted out.
I stopped dead in my tracks and my eyes widened. "What did you just say?" I asked slowly.
"I said," he walked closer to me, "I'm a savior. I'm from The Sanctuary."
My eyes were still wide. I stood frozen where I was and looked down at the ground. This can't be happening to me! "No." I said. "No no. This is all wrong."
"Abby?"
"Did you know?" I looked at him. "Did you know that I was from Alexandria?"
We stared at each other for a moment. "Yeah." He finally said.
I breathed out and gave him a look. "You…you asshole."
"Abby, wait, let me explain."
"I don't need an explanation!" I shouted. "It's perfectly clear what your intentions were!"
"It's not what you think!" He yelled back.
Just then, it started to rain. I looked up at the darkening sky that was getting darker. The rain came down harder, then it thundered. I guess we're in the spring storm times.
"Come with me." Leon said. "We can get out of the storm and talk."
"What?" I gave him a stupid look. "No way."
"You gonna walk home in this?"
"What other choice do I have?" I shook my head.
"To come with me." Leon gave me a serious look. He put his hand out. "Please." I paused and looked into his eyes. He seemed genuine and…it's a long way home. I didn't really want to walk in this.
"Fine." I gave in. I followed Leon and we ran off.
Narrator's POV
Max came out from his hiding spot behind the tree and watched Abby and the guy run off. He heard their whole conversation. The boy was mad at his friend, Abby, for the way she blew him off earlier and now he had the perfect way to get back at her. He ran off in the direction of Alexandria to pay a visit to Abby's father, Rick Grimes.
Abby's POV
Leon took me to a cabin in the woods that was nearby. We were able to get out of the storm and dry off a little. I found a towel and dried my hair. Looking over at Leon, I realized he was shivering. Even though I felt betrayed by him, I still felt a little bad. "Here." I said handing him the towel. "It's to dry your hair."
"Thank you." He said and took it. He started to towel dry his hair.
I sighed and shook my head. "I can't believe the situations I get myself in." I put my hands up by my head.
"Abby, please listen to me." Leon said standing up. "Let me explain."
I gave him an annoyed look. "Sure. Go ahead. Explain." I waved. It's not like I had anywhere else to go. "Whatever you say, it's not gonna change anything." I shook my head.
"It might." His expression hardened. I stared at him waiting to hear what he had to say. "Yes, I'm a savior…but I'm not one of them." He started. I scoffed. "I'm not!" He gave me a serious look. "They took me in after the war. I had no parts of it or even knew about it at the time." He looked down. "Now I know all the stories."
I gave him a disgusted look. "If you heard all the stories, then how could you stick with a group like that?"
"I needed shelter." He shrugged. "And they're not all bad." I scoffed again and raised my eyebrows. "They're not. Maybe they used to be but…not the ones I know."
"Yeah, well…then they're certainly not the ones I know either." I said then shook my head. "It doesn't matter. You knew I was from Alexandria."
"Not at first." Leon admitted. "I…asked around at The Sanctuary. They told me The Rick Grimes has a daughter named Abby and I put two and two together. That's how I knew who you were."
The Rick Grimes? I forgot my dad is famous for ending the war with Negan and the saviors. I thought for a minute. "How do I know you're not lying?" I put my arms out.
"I wouldn't be telling you all this if I was." He shook his head.
I thought about it and that does make sense. I crossed my arms as I thought. And I mean…if he wasn't one of the original saviors, then he didn't do anything to any of my people. I sighed and uncrossed my arms. "Okay. But you still stood me up." I pointed out.
"That wasn't my intention." Leon said. "I went on a run with my group and we ran into a bit of trouble so we weren't back yet. I'm sorry I wasn't there."
My expression softened. I know what that's like. "I appreciate the apology." I said for real. "Why didn't you just tell me that before?"
Leon seemed to hesitate. "…you were pretty angry."
I let out a laugh. "I was, wasn't I?"
"Scary angry." He said with a laugh.
I smirked. "Well…you'll have to get used to that if you wanna be my friend." I raised my eyebrows.
"You still wanna be friends?" He asked.
I shrugged, then sighed. "Why not? I believe you." I had a thought just then that made the blood drain from my face. "But we can't tell anyone about this." I said seriously. "If my dad finds out about us meeting, he'll kill you. Or one of the others will."
"Yeah, I know and…it'll cause a lot of problems between your communities and mine."
"So we're in agreement?" I asked. "No one can know about this?"
"I'll take it to the grave." He said. We stared each other for a while, then nodded in agreement. Leon looked towards the window. "Hey, look." He got up and walked to it. "The rain stopped."
"And the sun came out." I pointed out with a smile.
Leon stared at me. "Wanna go for a swim?" He finally said.
"Swim?" I questioned. "It's a little cold for swimming."
"C'mon, it'll be fun." He grinned.
I couldn't help but grin back at him, his smiles were contagious. "Okay." He put his hand out and I took it.
We went back down to the river, Leon just jumped right in. "Woo!" He yelled when he came back up. "That is cold." He laughed.
I hesitated. "…I don't think I wanna…"
"Oh come on. Don't be a wimp." He teased me. "Cathy would do it."
"Oh no she wouldn't." I raised my eyebrows. "She may be crazy but she's not stupid." Leon laughed. "And speaking of that…how the hell do I remind you of that crazy bitch?"
"What do you mean? What's wrong with her?"
I gave him a stupid look. "She's a psycho!"
Leon laughed pretty hard at that. "Yeah, she kinda is. You still remind me of her though." He smirked.
"Okay that's it." I said. "I'm gettin' in." I ran into the water. "So I can kick your ass!" I grabbed onto him and made him go under the water. He squealed then laughed once he resurfaced.
"See? You are her." He smirked.
I shrugged. "Maybe I am. I like her."
"Me too."
I stared at him a minute. "Yeah, well…you kinda remind me of Adam. So I guess we're even."
"We can be Adam and Cathy." He said. "As long as you don't shoot me." He put his hands up.
I had to smirk at that. "Don't get me pregnant then." I raised my eyebrows. We both laughed.
There was a brief pause. "So…you really didn't like it?"
I shrugged and thought for a moment before speaking. "It was alright. I didn't really…I didn't really get it if I'm being honest." I said. "Like what was the point of all that?"
He cleared his throat. "Well, it's saying that evil is an innate and inescapable human problem, but at the same time, it sets forth hope that each individual has the freedom to overcome evil by his or her own choice."
I was dumbfounded. "O-oh." I felt like an idiot. Leon must be a lot smarter than I thought he was. "I think I get now then." I nodded. "Like how Cathy gave in to the evil, but Adam didn't even though she did him very wrong."
He smiled. "Yeah. See, you did get it." He put his hand on my shoulder. I let out a laugh. Hopefully, I redeemed myself. "I like you, Cathy."
I looked up at him and smiled. "I like you too, Adam." We just smiled at each other like two idiots.
Suddenly, I looked back towards home. I should probably start heading back soon…but…I looked back at Leon. I didn't want to yet though. But if I didn't soon, I'd have to stay somewhere for the night. That thought gave me an idea. "Hey, do you wanna…keep hanging out?" I asked. "We don't have to…" I trailed off suddenly feeling shy and looked down. "We don't have to go back tonight. We could…go back to that cabin and maybe talk?" I looked back up at him and shrugged. "We could talk about some other books we like…or movies." I suggested. "And…I brought some snacks with me." I smiled.
Leon seemed to hesitate but he was smiling. "Okay." He finally said. "That sounds fun."
"Really?" I perked up.
"Yeah." He nodded once. "Maybe I will get you pregnant."
My expression changed and felt a bit nervous. "What?"
"Bad joke." He said with his hands up.
Oh okay. I relaxed. "Yeah, slow down, Adam." I teased. We both laughed then got out of the water and headed back towards the cabin.
Leon and I found dry clothes that we changed into, then we hung up our wet clothes by the fire to dry. I found a bottle of wine and poured each of us a glass. Now we were sitting by the fire just talking.
"So…books?" I said.
Leon let out a laugh. "What other kinds of books do you like?"
"Well…I'm mainly into mysteries, murder mysteries, thrillers." I shrugged. "But I do like some of the classics. Like…Of Mice and Men, To Kill A Mockingbird, Little Women, Frankenstein…uh…" I trailed off because I couldn't think of anymore that I read that I liked. I let out a laugh feeling stupid.
Luckily, Leon laughed too. "Yeah, I like those too. Wasn't a huge fan of To Kill A Mockingbird but…" He shrugged.
"Really?" I asked surprised. "I thought you'd say that about Little Women but not that one."
"Yeah, I didn't really care for that one either but…no, I didn't like To Kill A Mockingbird because…I thought Boo Radley was gonna be the baddest dude and he was so lame." Leon said. I laughed. I think the wine was loosening him up a little.
I took a sip of wine. "Well, you know what book I really loved?" I asked him. He raised his eyebrows at me waiting for me to tell him. "The Outsiders."
He smirked. "Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold."
I got all giggly after that. That's probably my favorite book so it's cool that someone else can share that with me. "I like the movie too." I said then sipped my wine. I got an idea. "Mm." I said with wine still in my mouth, I quickly swallowed. "If we can find a portable DVD player somewhere, maybe we can watch it sometime."
"I'd like that." Leon nodded. "So are we moving onto movies now?"
"Sure." I said. "Do you like movies better than books?"
He looked like he was thinking. "Yeah, I guess." He shrugged.
"I think I like books better." I said. "If you had asked me that years ago, I'd definitely say movies. But now I like books better." I smiled and nodded. "Plus…everyone knows the book is always better than the movie." I shook my head.
Leon smirked at me. "Yeah, you're right. It is." We just stared at each other grinning like idiots again.
Leon and I stayed up late and talked and drank the whole time. We had some great conversations, some funny and some serious.
"I never went back to the zoo after that." Leon said. He told me about the time he saw a gorilla for the first and got really freaked out. I was laughing.
I let out a heavy sigh. "Yeah he was like the older brother I never had." I was telling Leon about Glenn. "He was a real good guy." I nodded.
"He sounds like it. I'm sorry that happened." He said. "Wish I could've met him."
Leon and I were laughing pretty hard, I just told him how I would put my brother in the shopping cart at the grocery store when we were little and push it and run away. Carl would cry because he thought he was being left behind. I would come back, he would stop crying, then I'd do it again. "I know it sounds mean but it was so funny!"
"I'd do it too if I had a younger sibling." We laughed.
"Yeah, growing up poor sucked." Leon said. "I went to a pretty good school though so everyone had the latest, coolest toy and I didn't so I was out of the loop."
"I get that." I admitted. "I mean…I wasn't poor but we didn't have much money either. I was like the only kid in high school who didn't have an iPhone." I let out a laugh.
"Same. And the worst part would be when the teacher was like, 'okay everyone get out your phone and go on this website and do this quiz'."
My jaw dropped. "Oh my God, yes!" I yelled excitedly. "And it was embarrassing because I always had to share with someone." I sipped my wine then shook my head. "People like my dad think they had it hard growing up. Pfft." I waved. "They don't get what we had to go through with that."
Leon snorted. "Seriously." We both laughed. There was a pause as we both sipped our wine. I looked out the window and saw that the sun was starting to come up. "Well…we should probably get some sleep if we're gonna meet up again tomorrow."
I stared at him. "It is tomorrow."
"Oh." He said. We both laughed.
Leon and I stayed up and kept talking and decided not to sleep in the cabin. We headed out once it was completely light out and we also agreed not to meet up that day. We both needed some sleep after staying up the whole night. Plus, it would be better for us not to see each other every day. We don't want to get caught. So, we said our goodbyes, then went our separate ways.
By the time I got home, everybody was awake and eating breakfast. I closed the door a little harder than I wanted, which drew attention to me. I wasn't thinking clearly from being tired. "Ooh." I said.
"Hey, where you been?" My dad asked me. "Did you go for an early morning walk?" He let out a laugh.
"No." I said. "I just got home."
He looked at me with concern, so did Michonne. "I didn't even know you went out yesterday. You didn't say anything."
Daryl was looking at me now too. "Where'd you go?"
I didn't feel like answering their questions right now so I decided to hide behind humor like I always do. "I don't have time for questions." I smirked and waved them off. "I was up the whole night and I'm very tired so I'm going to bed." I began walking towards the stairs. "Nobody disturb me." I walked up the stairs without looking back.
"Okay?" I heard my dad say with a laugh.
Narrator's POV
Rick Grimes looked at Daryl and Michonne after his daughter went upstairs to bed. They all laughed a little. "Wonder where she went?" He questioned. "And why she stayed up all night?"
Michonne shrugged. "Maybe she found that boyfriend she was lookin' for." They both laughed.
Daryl stared at the woman. "What do ya mean she was lookin' fer a boyfriend?"
"She said the other day she was goin' out to look for a boyfriend." The woman said and laughed again.
"Why? She don't need no boyfriend." Daryl said looking towards the stairs.
"Well she wants one." Michonne said again. "And she's not a kid anymore so there's nothing we can do about that."
"Yeah, we can."
"What?" She raised her eyebrows at her friend.
"Kill 'im." Daryl shrugged. Rick and Michonne laughed.
