"And that is how you do a cross stitch," I tell the young girls, sitting around the table. "Now, if you turn your attention to the dresses on the pedestals, they look plain and ordinary. That's where the fun comes in. On the table in the back, are beads, sequins, buttons, anything you could wish for designing a dress. The only rules are share with your neighbor and have fun!"
Excited gasps and squeals rise from the group of twelve girls I'm teaching at Gabriel's. Adrien is elsewhere in the building, teaching the boys how to model and how to field questions when in front of a camera and being interviewed. I'm curious if he's also teaching them puns. I rub my head as I check on the girls, I haven't felt like myself soon after graduation.
Yes, I am done with school, and I don't know what direction I'm going, but that's okay. For now, I just want to be with Adrien and leave Paris. Yes, I said leave Paris. I love the City Of Light, but we want a fresh start on our own quiet island, and maybe start a family. Adrien and I have discussed it, and the more we talk about it, the more I want kids then a career. At least for now.
Not that the public saw Toxinelle and Claw Noir, but its our last day in Paris. We leave tonight for our island, and Adrien is excited about the honeymoon. I'm happy too, though sad to leave my parents who have supported me my entire life. If there's anyone I'll miss, its them.
I gently coach and give advice to my charges, all of the girls will be doing internships here, and Gabriel is pleased with their progress. A wave of tiredness washes over me. Maybe we should have left a week from now?
"Girls? Will you okay a moment? I just need to step out for a moment." The girls nod, and I see that many have teamed up in pairs of two and three's. Not only are they supporting each other, it could be the start of some wonderful friendships.
My stomach starts to churn, and I hurry past the boy's mock runway show. I'm so intent on making it to the restroom, that I fail to see Adrien catch sight of me. Luckily, the bathroom is empty as I hurry into one of the stalls, making it just in time.
My coffee, and my bagel that I ate in the car ride over is deposited into the toilet, plus maybe last night's dinner as well. Ugh, I feel awful. But how? It came on so suddenly….
Rap! Rap! Rap! "Sweetie? You okay?" I start at the sound. Adrien. He must have seen me running here. I unlock the door. "Are you sick? Your pale," he says, as I move back to give him room. I nod, feeling nauseous once again. I hurl again, then rest my head against the cool stall wall. "Marinette, you should have told me you weren't feeling good at breakfast." "I felt great then," I say, my eyes closed.
"And you didn't start your monthlies?" I shake my head. "Here, let me hold you for a moment." Oh, he's warm and strong, a place of safety. He lifts my shirt slightly, feeling my belly. "Marinette, do you think your pregnant?" I freeze, a literal sculpture. Its possible. "I don't know, I just want to lie down."
Adrien is all business. "I know, honey. But I want to go to a doctor first. I'll have Father and Alyssa take over the rest of class." I nod, feeling horrible at leaving the girls, but its obvious I'm to sick to stay here.
Adrien helps me into the back of the car, and Tikki flies out as we drive away, her little hand touching my cheek, her blue eyes concerned. "It's going to be okay," I whisper.
By some luck, (Or my luck as Ladybug) we get into the doctor right away. Adrien tells the doctor my symptoms, and I confess I haven't felt the best in some time.
The gel they spread on my tummy is cold, and I squirm, settling down when Adrien holds my hand. On the monitor we can see what the doctor sees, and suddenly, I narrow my eyes. There's something moving on the screen! "Well, Mrs. Agreste, your carrying a baby girl. Here's her heartbeat here," the kind doctor says, pointing with her penlight. "Emma," I whisper. "We're leaving the country tomorrow. Will Marinette be okay to travel?" The doctor cleans up, helping me dress. "Oh, yes. But get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluid. Adrien, stay close by to keep an eye on her the next few days." "That shouldn't be a problem," he tells her, giving me a soft smile. I smile back.
I fall asleep in the car ride home, waking up in bed. "Here you go, sweetie. One of cup of honey tea," Adrien hands me the warm cup. "Thanks. Can you believe it? We're going to parents!" "Nine months is a long time for this impatient Cat to wait, but I'll manage somehow." I roll my eyes. "Oh, come on. Your going to be so busy being Farmer Adrien you won't even notice!" Adrien grins. "Farmer Adrien? So, are you going to make me pair an overalls and a straw hat?" "I'll see what I can do," I laugh.
We have a short celebration and my parents are thrilled with our news. However, its bittersweet since we leave right after the party. Traveling goes into the night and into the next day, and I admit, when I'm not sleeping, I'm eating. Guess it makes sense though, since I'm now eating for two.
Adrien ordered me a banana and peanut butter smoothie at the airport for extra protein, and its now my favorite snack. We have to drive down to the docks to go to the island in a small boat. I feel slightly sick as the boat zooms over the waves, but I must admit I like the blueness of the water and the horizon beyond.
Even at sunset, the air is hot and muggy, and I can feel my long black hair curling. I quickly throw it up into two high buns. Our cabin sits in the middle of the island. "Maybe we can check it out tomorrow. Its going to need a clean out anyway," I tell Adrien as we hunt for wood for the fire. "Fine with me," Adrien replies. "That way we can sleep under the stars together." I laugh. "You are just a suck," I giggle and he winks. "What can I say, Fancy Bug? I am a sucker for romance."
The fire feels nice after a long day of travel. I make fire cakes and I promise to make pancakes in the morning. We pitch our tent, me crawling in immediately. But I can't seem to get comfortable until Adrien pulls me into his arms. Breathing in his soft scent, I feel my own lids drooping before falling fast asleep.
In the morning, I hear a strange sound, and I hear the tent flap unzip. "Don't worry, I'll go check it out," Adrien informs in a gravely voice. He always sounds like when he first wakes up.
I am content to lay still and listening to the birds in the trees, when I hear a strange chattering sound. "Claw, you are not eating a bird for breakfast," I call from inside the tent. Then I make my way out into the sunshine. Claw gives another growl, followed by a chirp. "What are you staring at?" I peer up into the branches, finding an exotic bird eyeing up Claw. "Come on, you can help with breakfast."
I drink juice instead of coffee, and Adrien laughs at the expression on my face. With a kiss on the cheek and a thank you for breakfast he heads off to explore the island. I joke with him if he finds buried treasure he has to share it with me.
I walk over to the cabin door, pushing the door open slowly. It opens with a long slow crrreeak! Making the airs on my arm stand up. Finding a broom, I begin to brush out the dirt and cobwebs.
At noon, I bathe in a nearby pool, for I'm as dirty as the cabin. Having a good soak though really helped, and I tackle the afternoon with fresh eyes. Then the hard work is to come as I bring pail after pail of water, scrubbing the floors.
I ravenous when its time to cook supper and I make noodles. Adrien brings back some fresh fruit and its the most delicious fruit I can remember eating.
After clean-up, Adrien and I slip under a blanket and watch the stars come out. Though the darker it becomes the tireder I feel. I don't even remember Adrien carrying me to bed.
"Wake up, love," Adrien says softly, and I open my eyes to a gray day outside the tent. I can hear rain pattering away outside, but in here its warm and cozy.
I make breakfast in the cabin for the first time, Adrien helping as he brings in the wood. Its a fancy breakfast, just oatmeal and berries, but a fine breakfast anywhere. "We'll have to explore one of the nearby islands soon. Surely someone on the island is a craftsman."
I'm glad not to be going outside today, and I'm secretly glad Adrien is stuck in here with me. We draw up the plans were we want the furniture to go, plus the furniture itself. In the afternoon, I'm not feeling so hot, so I crawl into bed, Adrien rubbing my back gently. "Cuddles?" I ask, sleepily and he nods. I bury my face in his chest, my safe spot.
By evening, I'm feeling horrible. "Don't worry, you'll be feeling right as rain after a cup of tea," Adrien assures me, as he walks off to the kitchen. If only he were right.
