Looking on with a worried expression was Keats as he put away Timburr's Poké ball after recalling it. On the other side of the PokéPotluck battlefield was Carter, shaking with agitation, and his stolen and quiet Lopunny in her Mega Evolved state, looking at the chubby trainer.
"Hardly a reaction from Lopunny after taking damage from "Spikes."' Don George said as he turned to look at Burgh at the commentary desk.
"Carter's Lopunny has been quite the strong Pokémon." Burgh said casually in response.
"Thought the "Spikes" would make a bigger impression..." Keats thought as he looked at Lopunny, unresponsive to the damage she just took before reaching into his pocket and taking out his Ultra Ball containing Druddigon. "Druddigon, you're on call!" He exclaimed as he threw the ball.
Popping out of the ball was Keats' Dragon type Pokémon once again as Druddigon landed on Keats' side of the battlefield.
"Draaaaah!" Druddigon bellowed as he eyed Lopunny.
"Be careful..." Keats said with a cautious tone.
"Drudd!" Druddigon said with a nod as the Dragon type readied itself.
"Lopunny! use "Energy Ball!"' Carter screamed as Lopunny proceeded to put her hands together and form a ball of green and brown energy.
"Druddigon, dodge!" Keats exclaimed.
Throwing it at full force at Druddigon, Lopunny chucked her ball at the Dragon type. Answering his trainers order, Druddigon took flight to avoid being hit as he flapped his wings in the air.
"Great, that worked..." Keats said to himself.
"Lopunny, use "Bounce!"' Carter shouted as Lopunny jumped into the air.
Reaching high into the air, Druddigon looked up as Lopunny was now above him. Descending back towards the earth, Lopunny proceeded to dropkick Druddigon in the face, forcing him back down to the ground. Hitting the battlefield with a loud slam, Lopunny stomped on Druddigon's head, leaving a crater as Lopunny proceeded to wince slightly before jumping backwards.
"Dr-Druddigon?!" Keats shouted in shock as Druddigon started to slowly pull himself up from the ground, clutching his head with his right claw. his vision blurry from the damage.
"Druuuu..." Druddigon grunted in pain.
"Good!" Carter exclaimed angrily and joyful. "Now you can- huh?" He said before noticing Lopunny lifting up one of her feet and saw a scratch on one of the soles of her feet. "What are you doing?! Focus up!" Carter shouted as Lopunny put her foot down and proceeded to look at Druddigon once more.
"Druddigon! Shake it off!" Keats commanded as Druddigon proceeded to shake his head left and right to get focus back in his sight.
"Druddigon!" Druddigon said as he got back to his feet.
"Druddigon, attack with "Slash!"' Keats ordered as Druddigon rushed at Lopunny with his right claw glowing white.
"Dodge!" Carter exclaimed.
Swinging his claw, Druddigon attempted to attack Lopunny but the currently Normal and Fighting type Pokémon had side stepped out of the way of the strike. Trying once again, Druddigon swung the back of his hand at the rabbit-like Pokémon, but she proceeded to duck out of the way, once again failing to hit her.
"Keep trying!" Keats shouted.
"Druuuuudd!" Druddigon bellowed as both of his claws glowed and attempted to hit Lopunny for a third time.
"Lopunny! Use "Close Combat!"' Carter commanded as Lopunny jumped at Druddigon.
Forming fists with her hands, Lopunny proceeded to punch Druddigon in the face, causing Druddigons glowing hands to dissipate. Striking the Dragon multiple times in the face with her punches, Lopunny alternated to using her legs and kicking him in the sides.
"Draaahh!" Druddigon grunted as he was pushed backwards, falling onto his knees in pain.
"Oh no!" Keats exclaimed.
"What was that? You worried?" Carter said in a mocking tone. "Maybe you should've thought of that before you got me angry!" He screamed.
"My, my." Burgh said with a raised eyebrow.
"Not a very friendly match between two trainers." Don George commented.
"Lopunny, get ready and- huh?" Carter said, ready to order again until he noticed something peculiar.
Looking at Lopunny, Carter noticed that she was stirring slightly as she looked at the palms of her hands and then at her knuckles before looking at her feet and knees. Examining her with their eyes, Carter and Keats noticed Lopunny was looking at cuts, scratches and bruises that had formed on her hands and feet.
"How'd you get those?!" Carter questioned loudly.
"I don't... Wait, "Rough Skin!"' Keats said until he realized what had happened.
"Every time Lopunny had struck Druddigon, she was also taking a portion of damage." Don George said as he scratched his chin.
"Well, it matters little!" Carter shouted in anger. "Lopunny, ignore it!" He ordered as Lopunny proceeded to stop looking at her bruising.
"...Little jerk..." Keats thought as he looked at Carter before looking at Druddigon. "Druddigon, use "Dragon Tail!"' He commanded as Druddigon rushed at Lopunny.
"Druuudd!" Druddigon screamed as he ran at Lopunny, his tail glowing green as he swung it at her.
"Dodge it!" Carter ordered.
Lopunny proceeded to bend backwards as Druddigon swung his tail towards her upper body. However, as she bent back, Lopunny winced from the feeling of the bruises on her feet as she lost her balance, falling down onto the floor and onto her back. Noticing her fall, Druddigon proceeded to stop in mid-swing and raised his glowing tail downward, finally managing to hit Lopunny as he slammed her with his "Dragon Tail" attack.
"Guh!" Carter exclaimed in shock as Lopunny winced from the weight of the Dragon type attack against her sternum.
"Nice!" Keats said in a joyful tone as he finally hit Lopunny as Druddigon pulled his tail back.
"A solid strike by Druddigon!" Burgh said from his commentary desk.
"Grrrr... Lopunny! End this now!" Carter said with his body twitching. '"Ice Punch!"' He screamed loudly as Lopunny opened her eyes and kipped up back to her feet, surprising Druddigon.
Forming a fist with her right hand, a blue-ish white aura of cold energy had appeared around it as she struck Druddigon in the face with a super effect Ice type attack.
"Druuuud!" Druddigon exclaimed in pain as Druddigon was sent stumbling backwards as shards of ice formed against the right-side cheek of the Dragon before landing on his back, his eyes becoming swirls to signify his unconscious state.
"Druddigon is unable to battle! Lopunny is the winner!" The referee declared.
"Wha-wha..." Keats mumbled in shock with his jaw dropping.
"And now it looks likes Keats has lost his first Pokémon in this battle." Don George commented as Keats looked at Lopunny and Carter.
"Ice is powerful against Dragon types." Carter said with an angry smile on his face as Keats' eyes widened. "Something an inexperienced dunce like you wouldn't know!" He exclaimed.
"Guh..." Keats grunted in surprise. "Cr-crap... I did forget that, but I didn't expect it to knock out Druddigon so quickly..." He thought with worry forming in his head.
"Please choose your next Pokémon." The referee said towards Keats as the chubby trainer turned his head.
"Huh?" Keats muttered, confused.
"You must take out your next Pokémon for the battle. Otherwise, you'll forfeit the match." The referee explained as Keats shifted his attention from the ref back to Carter, who had his smug expression return on his face with his arms folded before looking at Lopunny and seeing her silent intensity radiating off her in her Mega Evolved form.
"I wonder what he will take out." Burgh said as Keats' head darted in the direction of the commentary table.
"I'm curious too..." Don George said as he rubbed his moustache as Keats begun to sweat.
Reaching into his pockets, he pulled out his Ultra Ball and recalled Druddigon. After putting away the Ultra Ball, he took out both of his regular Pokéballs and held them in both hands. Looking at both, Keats begun to panic as he was unsure of what to do.
"I thought the "Spikes" strategy would have taken her out already or Druddigon's skin was enough to take her down without trouble... But I'm freaking out... What do I do now!?" Keats thought as he was mentally anguishing over his next course of action.
"Sir, your next Pokémon." The referee asked again.
"I know, I know! Just... Give me a second." Keats said in a frantic manner before looking at the Pokéballs once again.
"Just disqualify him already! It's not like his Pokémon will be strong enough to beat my Lopunny!" Carter exclaimed as Keats winced.
"He's not wrong... Timburr and Pineco aren't going to be able to beat Lopunny on their-" Keats thought until his train of thought was suddenly halted by one of the balls in his hands opened up on its own.
Emerging from the Pokéball was Keats' Pineco as she had jumped onto Keats' side of the battlefield as Keats looked at his Bug type with confusion.
"Pineco, what're you doing out of your ball? I didn't-" Keats asked until Pineco turned around to look at Keats with a serious look in her eyes as Keats put away the Pokéballs.
"Pineco! Pineco!" Pineco said towards her trainer as Keats was taken aback by the forceful tone she was giving off.
"Huh?" Keats muttered in response, unsure of what she was saying.
"Pinecococo! Co-copine! Co!" Pineco continued as Keats locked eyes with his Bug type.
"...You want to fight?" Keats asked as he shifted his eyes at Lopunny and then at Carter before back to Pineco once more. "I don't have many options given how she's the only Pokémon I have that's not taken a hit..." He thought as he put his hands on his face and bent forward.
"Huh?" Carter muttered at Keats' weird action.
"Hmmm?" Burgh said from his commentary desk.
"Gaaahahh!" Keats screamed into his hands as he stood up straight once again and put away his hands as he steeled himself. "Okay, guess we got no choice. Pineco, let's go." He said as Pineco spun around towards Lopunnys direction.
"This should be intriguing." Burgh said as he looked at Pineco.
"Indeed." Don George commented.
"Pineco, attack with "Spikes!"' Keats ordered as Pineco jumped into the air and spun around as caltrop-like projectiles expelled from her body.
"Like that will do anything! Lopunny, block it!" Carter commanded as Lopunny put her arms up to defend herself as the projectiles begun to hit her in quick succession until she swung her arms to her sides and knocked a few of them away. "Lopunny, "Energy Ball!"' He ordered as Lopunny formed a green and brown orb between her hands, throwing it at Pineco.
"Pineco, use "Protect!"' Keats exclaimed as Pineco landed back on the ground and then formed a green barrier around her body, blocking the attack from hitting her. "Attack again with "Spikes!"' He commanded once again as Pineco repeated her prior actions of jumping and firing off caltrop projectiles.
"That all you're gonna do?!" Carter screamed angrily. "Lopunny, swat them away with "Close Combat!"' He screamed as Lopunny proceeded to kick and punch away the caltrops as Pineco landed on the ground, shocked at her attacks failing. "Now use "Ice Punch" and get rid of that thing!" Carter exclaimed as Lopunnys right fist begun to glow with a clear mist of cold energy as she ran at Pineco.
"Do-dodge!" Keats exclaimed.
"Pineco!" Pineco screamed as she hopped over to her side and rolled away on the floor in order to get out of harm's way.
Punching the ground with her "Ice Punch," Lopunny missed striking Pineco and left chunks of ice where she struck the floor. Looking over at Pineco rolling away, Lopunny jumped in the direction the Bug type was attempting to escape and proceeded to stop in front of Pineco, casually kicking Pineco into the air.
"Toy with her..." Carter said maliciously as Lopunny kicked up Pineco with her foot like a soccer player with a ball, causing the Bug type to stumble onto the ground.
"Pine! Co!" Pineco exclaimed as she bounced on the floor in Keats' direction.
"Oh no!" Keats shouted.
"Didn't even have to tell her to do that." Carter said smugly over his rabbit-like Pokémon's actions.
"Guh..." Keats grunted as Pineco shifted herself back upright.
"Use "Ice Punch!"' Carter ordered as Lopunny attempted to strike Pineco once more with a frozen fist.
'"Protect!"' Keats shouted frantically.
With Pineco forming a barrier to defend herself once more, Lopunny punched the shield but to no avail to damage the Bug type again. After striking the shield, Pineco hopped backwards somewhat to get distance from her opponent as the rabbit-like Pokemon also jumped backwards.
"Seems to be a bit of a standstill." Don George said as he looked on.
"Okay... Gotta think, what else did I train Pineco in? Ah!" Keats thought as he tried to remember Pineco's move pool. "Pineco, use "Bide!"' He exclaimed as Pinecos body begun to glow with a white aura. "Come on, hit her..." Keats thought nervously.
"Should've tried to dodge! Lopunny, use "Close Combat!"' Carter exclaimed as he gave Lopunny an order. "I'll knock her out before her dumb "Bide" even activates." He thought with a smirk.
Rushing at Pineco as she glowed white, Lopunny proceeded to kick up Pineco into the air once again before making fists and repeatedly punched the Bug type Pokémon in mid-air before swinging her leg downward and knocking her to the floor before stomping on Pineco multiple times.
"Uh..." Keats mumbled nervously. "Just hold on a little longer..." He thought as he swallowed spit.
"Hmmmm..." Don George muttered.
"Something a matter? If it's the viciousness of Lopunny's actions, I understand. It is quite the display of a lack of mercy." Burgh said as he watched Lopunny continued to pummel Pineco.
"No... It's not that." Don George replied. "It's the lack of foresight on Carters part." He said as Carter stopped smirking and turned towards the Battle Club owner.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Carter said with an offended tone.
"Pineco's ability." Don George said in Carters direction.
"What?" Carter replied in confusion as Keats' eyes widened.
'"Sturdy!"' Keats exclaimed as Carter turned his attention towards the battle again.
'"Sturdy" makes it so a move doesn't trigger a one-hit knockout." Don George explained.
"Then that means..." Carter said until he realized something. "Lopunny, get away from Pineco!" He screamed as Lopunny continued to stomp and punch the Bug type as it glowed.
Upon hearing the order, Lopunny stopped for a moment until she noticed Pinecos glowing body formed an orb of white energy with it slowly expanding. As it grew bigger and bigger, the orb of white energy suddenly fired a large and massive beam towards her and into the sky. Upon her order by Carter, Lopunny backflipped away from the ray as it went through the air and through separated several clouds.
"It... Missed..." Keats thought in shock as "Bide" failed to hit despite the heavy power it built up.
"What a "Bide!"' Burgh exclaimed in surprise.
"All those hits must have stored up a ton of power." Don George said as they both looked in the direction the ray went.
"If Lopunny were to have been hit by that, the battle would've been over..." Carter thought nervously as he took a deep breath as he watched Lopunny stand on his side of the battlefield, unphased.
"Pine..." Pineco said in pain as she attempted to get back up.
"Come on, get up!" Keats said as Pineco finally got back up. "One more hit and she's gonna be out like a light and we haven't done a single thing to Lopunny..." He thought nervously as Carter started to chuckle.
"Hahaha!" Carter laughed as Keats looked on. "Was that your last gambit?! You're out of ideas!" He said as he pointed at him.
"He's right... I am out of ideas... I've used up all four moves Pineco could use, and she can't take one more hit. "Spikes," "Protect," "Bide" and-... Wait..." Keats thought, sadly agreeing with his opponent in his mind until he realized something. "That was only three moves... I have one move left..." He continued mentally. "Wrong..." Keats said as Carter raised an eyebrow.
"Oh?" Don George said in intrigue.
"What else is left?" Burgh said in confusion.
"Pineco... You ready?" Keats asked towards his injured Pineco as she turned towards him.
"Pineco?... Co! Pineco!" Pineco said, unsure of what he meant at first until she understood what he wanted her to do.
"Pineco... Use "Explosion!"' Keats exclaimed as everyone looked on in shock as Pineco begun to glow.
"What?!" Carter screamed.
"Piiiiine..." Pineco said as it was preparing to blow up.
"Lopunny, get away! Use "Bounce!"' Carter ordered as Lopunny proceeded to jump high into the air.
"Co!" Pineco said as she exploded with the crowd in the stands ducking out of the way of the blast and commentators and referee hiding behind the table.
As Lopunny went high into the air, the smoke from the blast had overtaken her as she put her arms up to block it as the blast left a crater in the arena floor. With her body smoking and covered in soot from the blast, Pineco was knocked out with her eyes swirling.
"Pineco is unable to battle! Lopunny is the winner!" The referee declared as he got up from behind the table as Keats looked at his unconscious Bug type as he pulled out her Pokéball, recalling her.
"Thanks for helping..." Keats said calmly as he put her away as everyone looked upward. "Ah!" He exclaimed as he saw Lopunny was still in the air and didn't appear to have taken a hit from the blast.
"Ha! I told you!" Carter exclaimed happily as his Pokémon managed to avoid the "Explosion." "Your stupid Bug type used every move she had and couldn't even hit Lopunny no matter what she tried!" He mockingly said towards Keats as everyone saw Lopunny descend to the ground. "Now all we have to do is- huh!?" Carter said until he heard a large thud as he saw something that shocked him, Keats and everyone in the stadium.
With a massive thud from hitting the ground of the arena, Lopunny painfully landed on her back as she winced and grunted in severe pain as everyone looked on and noticed some burn marks around parts of her body, mixed in with the scratches from earlier in the fight.
"Wha-what the hell!?" Carter screamed in shock.
"It would appear she wasn't close enough to get knocked out by it..." Don George commented.
"But she did get caught in the blast." Burgh said with a smile forming as Lopunny struggled to get up. "And it certainly didn't help Carter was abusing that one move." He continued as Carter looked at the gym leader.
"What move?!" Carter questioned angrily.
'"Close Combat."' Don George said calmly towards him.
"What?!" Carter replied in frustration.
"What do you mean?" Keats asked in the direction of the commentators.
'"Close Combat" is a powerful Fighting type move but every time it gets used, it lowers the defensive capabilities of the Pokémon using it. Their muscles soften and their ability to take a hit is less than normal, rendering them weak to an attack." Don George explained as Keats and Carter looked at one another.
"Oh my god, oh my god!" Keats said with widened eyes of surprise. "Pineco did manage a hit! There's a chance!" He thought with a smile forming on his face as he grabbed his last Pokéball. "Timburr, you're on call!" Keats screamed as out came his Fighting type.
"Timburr!" Timburr said while carrying his squared log over his shoulder and covered in some scratch marks from earlier in the battle.
"And now both competitors are down to their last Pokémon." Burgh commented as Carter had started to panic for the first time since Lopunny was in battle.
"I didn't know "Close Combat" did that!" Carter thought in anguish as Lopunny was finally able to get back to her feet but was bending forward and twitching in pain. "I'm going to lose if Lopunny even takes one more hit, I have to end this now!" He thought.
"Timburr, we just need one good hit!" Keats said as Timburr nodded in response. "Use "Focus Energy!"' He ordered as Timburr began to glow with a red aura, increasing its ability to land a critical hit.
"Guh!" Carter grunted. "Lopunny, use "Bounce!"' He screamed as Lopunny prepared to jump but was taking her time due to the wounds she had sustained.
"If she jumps, we can't hit her with "Poison Jab..." But..." Keats thought as he waited for Lopunny to act.
"I told you to jump!" Carter shouted angrily as Lopunny finally managed to leave the ground and ascended into the air. "Ha! Now, you can't hit her, and her move is a Flying type maneuver!" He exclaimed with a malicious smile on his face.
"Timburr, use "Smack Down!"' Keats screamed as Timburr put his log down as it glowed orange like before.
"Huh?!" Carter exclaimed
"Tiiiimm..." Timburr said as he put his hands under one of the square ends of his log and proceeded to caber toss it once more.
With the glowing log reaching high into the air, it went past Lopunny as she looked upward at the log descending towards her as it fell back onto her skull, knocking her back down to the ground as she hit the floor of the battlefield with another hard thud with the log across her body.
'"Smack Down" to the rescue once again." Burgh said as he watched on with Don George nodding.
"No!" Carter screamed in anger. "Lopunny, get back up now!" He demanded as Lopunny twisted herself to be on her knees as she grabbed Timburrs log from off of herself and threw it away.
"Just one hit... Timburr, "Poison Jab!"' Keats commanded as Timburrs right hand begun to glow a toxic purple.
'"Ice Punch!"' Carter commanded in response.
Timburr, rushing at Lopunny, cocked back his arm to prepare to strike the damaged rabbit-like Pokémon. Attempting to try and strike back, Lopunny made another fist covered in an icy mist and shifted herself to be ready for a punch. When the two Pokémon got close enough to each other, they both extended their arms but Timburr, using his smaller stature, ducked the "Ice Punch" before striking her in the sternum with his poisoned hand. Overtaken by the pain, Lopunnys head spun as her vision went blurry before falling over onto her side, finally losing consciousness.
"Lopunny is unable to battle! Timburr wins! And the victory goes to Keats!" The referee declared as Carter and Keats' mouths dropped as the crowd erupted in cheers.
"I won... I won!?" Keats exclaimed in shock and happiness as he grabbed his head and hair.
"Timburr! Timburr!" Timburr exclaimed in similar joy as he picked up his log from the ground and ran towards Keats.
"We did it! We won the PokéPotluck!" Keats screamed in happiness and as he picked up his Fighting type Pokémon.
"Congratulations." Don George said casually as he and Burgh stood up and begun to clap for Keats' victory.
"Yes! Haha!" Keats continued to celebrate.
"I... I lost... My champion level Pokémon lost..." Carter thought as he just stood silently, staring at Lopunnys unconscious body.
"Yahaha!" Keats screamed as Don George and Burgh approached Keats with the gym leader holding the briefcase containing the money Keats won.
"I need to grab my things! I gotta get out of here!" Carter thought as he quickly pulled out Lopunnys Pokéball and recalled her before tiptoeing back into the stadium's corridors.
"Oh my gosh, I've never won anything like this in my life!" Keats said towards Don George and Burgh. "I tore off one thousand boxes tops for this cereal sweepstakes, and I got third place and won a free box of cereal every day for a single month and-" He reminisced before looking over at the opposite of the arena and noticed someone was gone. "He-hey!" Keats exclaimed as he rushed past Don George and Burgh.
"Hmmm?" Don George muttered with a raised eyebrow.
"Where's he going?" Burgh questioned as Keats and Timburr ran into the back area of the stadium.
In a locker room, Carter was in a rush attempting to try and grab his things in an effort to escape now that all of his Pokémon were unconscious. As he frantically put things away in a backpack and slammed a locker, Keats and Timburr ran into the room. Grabbing Timburrs log, Keats proceeded to throw Timburrs squared piece of wood like a football directly at Carters face.
"Blargh! Agh my nose!" Carter exclaimed in pain as he grabbed at his nose. "What is wrong with you?!" He said as he fell onto his butt on the floor while clutching at his face.
"Do I even need to answer that?!" Keats shouted as he walked up to Carter as Rotom popped out of Keats' pocket.
"Now we got you, zzzzt!" Rotom said with an angry expression on its phone screen as Keats grabbed Carter by the collar and forced him against the lockers.
"Le-let me go!" Carter protested as he tried to get Keats to let go of him.
"I have a better idea! How about you answer my questions, give me back my sisters Lopunny and I don't have Timburr break your legs!" Keats exclaimed angrily as Timburr walked over and picked up his log as Carter swallowed spit.
"Look, I-" Carter said as he put his hands up in a fearful manner.
"No! Enough!" Keats screamed loudly. "Give me Lopunny, now!" He shouted as he pointed at Carter as the teenager began to sweat.
"...Fi-fine..." Carter said as he pulled out the Pokéball for Lopunny and Keats took it and put it in his pocket.
"Now... You're going to answer my questions." Keats said threateningly.
"I don't have a choice... I'll tell you what you want to know..." Carter said nervously.
"Yeah, zzzzo-" Rotom said until Keats spoke up.
"Where are your friends!? How'd they get away!? Were those other Pokémon you had yours or not?! What happened to that Gyarados you caught?! Why did you come to Unova?! Did you know you shouldn't put salt and pepper on Oran Berries because it makes them taste rancid?!" Keats rambled as Rotom and Carter looked at Keats with confusion.
"He's just blurting out anything that pops in his head as questions..." Rotom thought as Keats continued.
"Why did you pick those moves for Lopunny?! What product do you use in your hair to make it look so silky?! Did you know that Stunfisks are Ground and Electric types?! What kind of Pokéball was that Abra in?! Have you ever started a forest fire?!" Keats said as he continued to ramble questions.
"This is going to be awhile..." Rotom thought with an exasperated expression.
What color is my underwear?! Why isn't there a Dark punk rock version of Oricorio?! Why isn't there a Pokémon based on a llama yet?! Okay I'm done... Keats might have had all three of his Pokémon with him but against his sisters Lopunny, controlled by Carter, the battle wasn't easy. Druddigon was downed first and then Pineco took a stance and tried her best to take her down but only weakened her. With Timburr left, Keats did what he never thought was possible and he won the battle against Carter. Now cornering the thieving teenager, Keats has begun his questioning against him and hopefully Keats will get the information he needs to hunt down the other thieves... If he can get back on point. See you next time.
Keats' Pokémon:
1. Pineco.
2. Timburr.
3. Druddigon.
Authors Note: (Sorry, I forgot to post my favorite Pokémon no one else really likes two chapters ago. Mine is Magmortar, it's a fire duck with flame cannons for arms, how is that not cool?!)
